I must admit that I feel stupid for posting this, because as much as I consider myself to be a bit of a techie, I can't find any program or Windows setting/system app that will suit my needs.
Does anyone know of an app for Windows which will monitor bandwith usage per application?
Here is the problem I am having:
Whenever I tether my laptop to my phone for simple web browsing, I seem to consume an amount of data that is much higher than it should be--I have a capped data plan and this is a bit of a problem. Most recently I caught Windows Media Center doing some sort of automatic update or something... I know that there are other apps that are doing this, but I don't want to change/disable the settings each and every app for ONLY when I am tethering...I would like them to update if I am on regular Wifi... It would be nice if I/Windows could recognize this when it is happening and stop this from happening when I am tethering...
Now that I think about it, it would be nice if there was some sort of Tasker for Windows to stop any kind of automatic updating of any program when connected to the SSID my phone puts out or to allow internet access for only Firefox while tethering...
Can anyone help me out or give me any ideas or solutions?
Thanks in advance! Everyone on XDA is super awesome.

For people that like to keep track of data usage, which one do ya'll use?
I use to use one for XP when I first started tething. I found NetTraffic and it seemed buggy and then I found NetCounter which seemed to not keeping track of my usage correctly.
Now NetTraffic has another app out due to complications in Market... whatever, but I wanna know what other people use or if they dont care.
NetCounter is good but the UI is a bit corky. Roiding is good, but the on/off popup seems genuinely random, and the UI is confused.
Leaning towards NetCounter. Still have run a test to compare the usage to my actual billed usage though...
i would like someone to release an app that does what SPB wireless manager does for WM. It tells you how much data you have used and also tells you how much data each app used so you can see which are the data hogs etc....
I was wondering if their has been any p2p software available for our phones? Something like a limewire mobile. The only thing ive found is an app called MopiPhant. Has anyone tried it out or anything else?

Are you serious ? Do you really want to do p2p on your phone ? Cause first, it will cost a lot on your phone bill and other point, UMTS connection will drain a lot your phone's battery.
i dont see a problem. i would do it over wifi eliminating these charges. then all i have to do it charge my battery then bam both ur problems solved.
I've tried this one: http://www.adisasta.com/wmTorrent.html, and it works fine. It will drain your battery in no time though, so it's usefullness is a bit limited because of that.

I agree, but the battery dies fast anyway. lol
I love being able to download a torrent on the fly, and brag to the people at work that can't do that with their iphone.

hahaha i absolutely agree with mike on that one, any other ideas?

I could never get pocket G2 to connect. Both with wifi or data connection.
I also tried wmtorrent on my mogul and it ran really rough. I did manage to download a 700 mb file but the phone felt like it was on fire while plugged in so I just stuck to logmein.com to my desktop and using winamp remote or ORB.
I prefer a slightly different solution.
I configure my torrent client to allow web management.
I can then add to the client from my phone, and my PC will download.
Connection there is also much much faster than over GPRS, and most wifi connections I will be on.
I also setup a secure FTP at home, and have all completed torrents moved into the FTP folder.
I can then access the completed torrents via FTP on my phone, and download them quickly.
I'm looking for a way to disable expensive datalinks such as 3G and edge that is a little more reliable than the 'off'-switch in the touchflo settings. It sort of bugs me that the phone connects to the internet whenever it feels like it. At home it's not necessary because I have wifi, and when I'm abroad I definitely don't want it to come anywhere close to connecting or in any way costing me a lot of money
Windows mobile is completely new to me, this is my first smartphone. I bet there's tons of useful applications lying around that do exactly what I want, but since I'm new to this it's all a bit overwhelming. Anyone who can point me in the right direction?
Install freeware NoData to disable data connection. Google for it.
Thanks a bunch, exactly what I needed

I installed it, and it is working well: no internet, nor mail checking, nor update of weather...Nice, without this it was virtualy impossible to prevent the TD2 to connect one way or another ;-)
Thanks for the pointer!
using the same app, very hapy with it! great one!
Hi there. I have a frustration with my Xperia. I know this phone is designed to be used in conjunction with the internet, but I have limited bandwidth to use. I find that my Xperia frequently connects to the internet without my knowledge. I cannot determine which programs are connecting, but is there a way I can prevent this? I would like programs to ask permission before connecting. Is there a program I can use or a setting that can help me.
I also use SPB Shell 3.5.
Thanks
there is a program called nodata. it can disable data communication in the phone. I forget the link just search this forum or use google
Im looking for app like that too.
@clodderes nodata just disables connection and you have to manually enable it. We are looking for app that will ask you if you wish to connect each time something will want to connect and then automatically enable/disable.

I Agree. One that asks would be better, but thanks clodderes because at least I can stop my phone connecting at this time. Maybe someone knows of a program that do what we want
I'm also interested in this.
Hi everyone!
I recently switched to WP (Lumia 520) and I'm pretty happy about it (especially in terms on smoothness...).
Obviously the main issue is the app-store but so far I got everything I want!
However I'm still looking for a AirDroid like app. It's not much about the file management (even though it's a real please to connect you phone trough wifi and browse everything) but more about texting and calling. I'd like to be able to send messages from my computer, manage my contact and maybe give calls. Using the phone services (that's the point).
If anyone knows anything that I could use, I'll be grateful!
App
Initially, in matter of access to files on WP you don't have a lot of access both by phone or PC using cable, but has an app that can aid in that fight, almost like AirDroid.

Of course the free version has limitations, but it's a start.!
Not bad! That's a good start indeed. I'll play around a bit with this.
Thanks a lot for the link
