anyone use this at all, from the time that i upgraded my rom, even when i first got my phone w/ the oem tilt rom, it has not worked. I changed the settings on my phone because initially the internet wasn't working, but not it works fine, i'm using palingro...but i at least want to try the oz because there are some things that bother me about it.
and by the way, i'm connecting using the att network, not wifi...as that is the first thing it says when its having trouble connecting. but honestly, no matter what i change in my phone, i'm still getting the "communication error. please try again or check your settings. IM is not supported over wi-fi connections" error.
any help/ideas?
gotten quite a few views, any input guys?
heya sim,
I use the OZ cab, both stock installed on the phone and installed with custom rom. I have experienced the situation you detail. It seems to happen when I close it down a way it didn't like or do something internet-wise with another program.
Fixing it usually only requires a quick turn off then turn on. It does get annoying sometimes when it happens.
Also I would like to add it doesn't seem very responsive as far as receiving messages goes either. Like sometimes I will get a message on my computer at roughly 12 in the afternoon and will not see it on the phone until after dinner. I have even had a couple experiences where I didn't receive messages until after the program had been restarted.
I will be trying another messaging program soon that doesn't use up messaging on my phone, this is part of what I believe makes it slow is the fact it uses messaging instead of internet.
any recommendations? / questions?
oh great...you mean to tell me that the oz messenger is sms based and not internet based? jeeze...i REALLY dont wanna pay for agile
yes this is what they told me at AT&T, There are a few out there that use internet via data connection (3g, hsdpa, etc.) agile being one of them...isnt it free tho? The same goes for Fring, and i believe IM+ you have to pay for but uses data connection aswell.
Yea, i use the OZ one, but only as a way of checking my current buddy lists in AIM and Yahoo. Its very unreliable for actually carrying a conversation. Also, its very clunky to use if you log into 2 or 3 messengers at once. One of the features about this phone that really made me want it (instant messaging on the go) has been pretty lackluster to me. I have yet to try any different messenger suites yet.
Ill let you both know for sure how the others work in comparison as I intend to try a couple other non sms bases ones
OZ messenger is LAME.. go to Palringo.com from your phone. Download it. Way better and its free push to talk built in.
you guys wont be disappointed with Palringo. You can have your AOL, Google Talk/Jabber, MSM messenger, yahoo. It signs in really quick about 2 seconds, gets all your friends, no drops in connection, Beautiful software and best of all its free.

mine ALWAYS drops my aim connection. i have no idea why. It keeps my google chat online constantly though, but not aim. anybody know of a sms based messenger for aim by any chance?
ok, i guess the problem w/ my messenger was the data package that i had with AT&T, now that i upgraded, i can sign on. only problem is, when i'm online...i'm not really online. it shows that all my buddys are off, when i check on another computer (different SN) if i'm on, its says i'm not. anyone know what the hell this is about? it seems like one problem after another w/ this....
plus i'm using the "OZ_Instant_Messanger_at_t_AKU_0.4.4" cab. thanx in advance
Agile
I have dumped Oz because it is slow to connect at times. At times it connects but it does not tell you so, that is you show up on a buddies computer but your phone still shows that it has not connected. Also, in this case if you quit the program, (stop it from memory) you are still logged on. Added to this is that you get charged for text messages!!
So, I have gone to Agile, which is data only. It connects fine too. It is pricey but it does the job. I am using it on a Treo 750. My service is At&T. It also does PTT etc.
AIM
The AIM client also uses data only and not SMS. So if you do not need the other message servers like Yahoo or MSN or Google etc. then AIM might be a good option. You can find it on this forum.
I had been using the OZ client on a trip earlier this month for the first time - did not care for the SMS integration of it at all. Every time a reply would come in you'd get a system SMS message. I've just installed the Palringo client listed above and it seems to work very well. Thanks for the heads up.
I use slick it's easy and free
yea wish i had read this thread prior to sending those 100 sms messeages at .15 cents each. Wait employee discount! oh **** not for sms. hahaha
gdit at&t!!
gonna check out one of these two you guys mentioned, that oz one does suck
and i have unimited data only.
I really wish I read this before paying for IM+. I like their service but have had a lot of problems lately when I flash roms constantly. Crap like always having to put in my resistration and then saying that my registration number is being used. I would understand if I stole the software but I paid good money for it.
I tried aglie and really like the GUI, but I'm not in the mood to spend that much money for another program.
I just downloaded palringo and from first impression really like it. The only thing I don't like is that it won't keep my always connected. Battery isn't an issue and neither is data.
I hear that. Im waiting and watching for something better.
BTW super rocks!
How about Fring?

I've had great luck with fring... Use it and if you twitter it has a built in twitter interface that's outside of the normal IM integration, it's pretty slick.

Hi Guys,
I found free navigation software that should work on most phones as it is a Java app. You can find it here: http://www.nav4all.com It is a 2Mb download, and it simple and easy to use. Installed it on my Diamond today and works well.
I would like to thank you for a great forum and all the info that is available.
Caveat emptor
You should tell that only the program is free.
It still uses a data connection, which for most people isn't free.
Data charges can be avoided
If you simply use the internet connection on your laptop to download the maps to your phone, these data charges can be avoided: after that just make certain that your data connection is OFF. According to the company's FAQ, it will operate perfectly well in offline mode.
I'll test this statement in the next few days.
I want to check this out, but am very skeptical since I have never heard of this company. I am going to wait until I hear what others have to say. I hope that I hear / read good things.

Reported to be working fine already...
Used this app on sevral phones and it works like a charm, even in offline modus
I'm leaning pretty strong towards the former, but let me just say I am a *BIG* fan of Android. I bought the ADP1, and gave that to my wife when I switched to T-Mo & bought the MT3G. Both are great devices, and I run cm on them. Overall I have a great experience with these phones & they're super fun & convenient.
But on both devices, both when I had the ADP1 on AT&T and with the MT3G with T-Mo, (where I live I have to roam off of AT&T, so it's using the same towers as before.) all IM apps stink because they cannot stay connected. This is including the built-in gtalk & sms-based IM apps and every other free one on the market that I've tried. IM+, Meebo, eBuddy, Aimer, Hi Aim/Yahoo, imov, Palringo, all fail to keep a session open. I'm almost certain it's something with Android, because it's the same on mobile networks as with wifi, and I've used BlackBerrys on the very same networks & locations and not had this problem. At all.
So what gives? I'm not gonna pay for a chat app, even if that would solve the problem. These apps are free on BlackBerry, and I have a spare BB that I can swap my sim card into if I have to & just use the MT3G as a MID where I have wifi available. I'd love to jump in and try to write a chat app for Android that fixes this problem, but I'm at best a n00b dev & don't know where to begin. If there's someone out there with some guidance on how to get started on that, or if the problem is specific to something with me/my devices, or can explain this so I can understand the problem if not solve it, or any other input at all I'd love to get your feedback.
Maybe it's you or something up with your service
Maybe it's you, something up with your service, or your particular phones. Where my parents live, nothing works but ATT. I've had two BB which I couldn't even receive a signal.
Then when I moved up to the Dash and then to the wing, I received one bar and I could get all of my services to work, even the IM services. When I moved to the G1, two bars.
Now, with the MyTouch, I get three bars and all of my apps which require the network work. IM, text, phone. The blackberry wouldn't even get a signal let alone IM.
So maybe it has something to do with the service and the phone.
wierd thing is, at the very same location & networks, both wap & wifi, i get a completely different result on the mt3g than i do on the bb. there has to be something wrong with the android network stack or how IM apps use it or something.
hopefully i'm not speaking too soon...
... but i may have fixed my problem. i was thinking about how Android puts applications to sleep if it's low on memory, so i changed my userinit.sh script to enable swap. been logged in all afternoon. we'll see how well this continues...
confirmed resolution
enabling swap fixed the problem. apparently Android system tells the chat apps to shut down to free up ram & they can no longer keep their sessions open.
thanks for the hint.
Thought about this a lot but didn't want to try.
Now I'll have to... Thanks
i used to use ebuddy on my htc magic.
and now i use the built in google voice/chat with my milestone.
both have been great for me...especially the latter. I dont even need to log on or anythnig. its just like recieving text messages
Now i have 256 megs of ram size. everything works just fine. more than that. minimal lag on switching apps and tabs(highest so far was 4 seconds)
Hello guiz. I am completely new with how to tweak the innards of my MyTouch.
What is this "swapping" you guys are talking about and how do you activate it?
Does it really help keep the AIM session connected despite being in the background?
I've always knew of the problem that causes AIM to constantly sign off when I try
using it, but never knew how to address the source issue.
Thanks for reply!
Hello all,
This might be a very newbie and stupid question, but please help me!
I have bought a Samsung Galaxy S from Vodafone Romania just a few days ago with a 1 GB data plan. Every thing worked perfectly (traffic was low and fast, some 30MB of download + upload in the last days) but this morning.... surprise 1.7 GB of traffic downloaded overnight (checked my My Vodafone online account and there it was: some 900 MB at around 2 am and another hundreds MB at 5 am). I was sleeping, the telephone was beside me at all time, no one else in the house etc.
Here is a list of apps which were installed on the device:
Best Matrix Live Wallpaper by yu xin
Angry birds
BATstat battery widget by martin eder
google goggles
magic tg tracker by shalafi
Moxier world
weather bug
es file explorer
notification notes by blee tech
vr tunnel lite live
ghost commander
data counter widget
mtg pedia
earth live wallpaper + map packs
star wars live wallpaper
barcode scanenr
yahoo messenger
star wars light saber
remote rdp lite
kindle
android manager wifi
Has anyone encountered this situation before? Can any of these apps cause such traffic?
I have wifi at home, the wifi on the device is enabled when I am at home (and so it was the night before). All I did was download Angry Birds and just played a few levels for fun and then went to sleep.
Could some have used the Wireless AP option, could someone tether to the device without my permission, wirelessly?
Maybe the bluetooth was on; could some have used it without a pin or without me accepting the connection?
I have talked to vodafone support and they say they will know only 4 days after the beginning of the monthly plan (which is on the 2nd, making this possible only on the 6th). Could they check then, the iport that my device was connecting to? Maybe in this way I could identify the application.
Please HELP!
Best regards,
T.
I note you have Data Counter Widget installed.
Have you checked the downloaded amount showing in that App against what your online Vodaphone account is saying?
If there is a discrepancy you will at least know the data has not come from your phone but an outside source.
Looking at your Apps I can't see anything that would generate that kind of figure.
Have you checked to see if there was a Vodaphone update?
- The data from VDF seems very similar to the one reported by the traffic counter;
- Having restarted the phone, I don't think that this was an update: I remember checking the about phone screen before restarting it and there was the old info.
Still... 1.7 GB update?
Thanks for the quick respone,
T.

Well, apart from update files or other items from Voda I can't see anything that should generate such a high volume of traffic... It doesn't make sense!
You may want to ask Voda if they have issued any large files or can explain the traffic.
Other than that you have the time it happened, you could try going through a file explorer (Astro is my choice) and checking the date/time/size stamp to see if anything correlates.
The only apps that could use data are yahoo messenger and remote rdp lite but so much in a night .... Have you installed an app the day before the huge download ?? Or used one that you don't use a lot ??
On Saturday I only installed ES file explorer and angry birds.
I have talked this morning to Vodafone support and they have listed a request to their technical team with a 72 hours deadline. So I'll call them again on Wednesday and see what's going on.
The guy from Vodafone told me that it is really strange as others who have complained about a similar problem had their traffic spanned over a whole month (and that was pretty obvious...) but in my case everything was downloaded in 2 bursts.
I'll just have to wait and see what happens...

cause you are form Romania , big hi for you and all Romanians .i think the problem if u have Froyo.
is in Froyo it self .it is really not a problem . put in Froyo there is option that save your data(application data) automatically and when ever u reinstall an application all the data and sittings will be restored .and u can guess how much data is there .
u can disable this feature by going to sitting and then go to privacy and u can disable backing data .
Thanks for the idea, but the problem is I don't have Froyo (yet! ). But I'll be careful once I update my device to Froyo.

Note.. what the poster is forgetting is this is direct downloaded material which is seen on the Vodaphone Online server not just on the Phone.
Publicly contactable IP address?
Hi there,
If you aren't using a proxy server via your cellular provider(IE a WAP apn setup with proxy), you have probably received a public IP address on your phone.
What could have happened is that someone somewhere(or a server) has been shunting data at your public IP address over night which would explain the data usage. The data doesn't need to be initiated by any program on your phone, only that you are contactable on the Internet.
I personally use a program called Droid Wall(Firewall for Android) which drops unrequested packets of data from the public Internet side. It also allows you to specifiy which installed programs on your phone may or may not use your cellular connection, or your Wifi connection.
I generally use Droid wall to refuse internet 3G and Wireless access to programs which I know shouldn't require it, such as games
If you aren't using your providers Wap Proxy server and you are still getting this significant data usage, I would recommend changing over to it from the normal Internet APN you are currently using.
Hi,
Thanks for the info. While I wait for Vodafone to research my problem, I'll give the firewall a try.

Sorry I should have mentioned that you also need to have root access as well for Droid wall
Thanks! I found the app on the Market and the rooted part was clearly typed into the title . I'll give it a try later today.

I must admit that I feel stupid for posting this, because as much as I consider myself to be a bit of a techie, I can't find any program or Windows setting/system app that will suit my needs.
Does anyone know of an app for Windows which will monitor bandwith usage per application?
Here is the problem I am having:
Whenever I tether my laptop to my phone for simple web browsing, I seem to consume an amount of data that is much higher than it should be--I have a capped data plan and this is a bit of a problem. Most recently I caught Windows Media Center doing some sort of automatic update or something... I know that there are other apps that are doing this, but I don't want to change/disable the settings each and every app for ONLY when I am tethering...I would like them to update if I am on regular Wifi... It would be nice if I/Windows could recognize this when it is happening and stop this from happening when I am tethering...
Now that I think about it, it would be nice if there was some sort of Tasker for Windows to stop any kind of automatic updating of any program when connected to the SSID my phone puts out or to allow internet access for only Firefox while tethering...
Can anyone help me out or give me any ideas or solutions?
Thanks in advance! Everyone on XDA is super awesome.
