ok I am guess everyone in the forum is uber informed about all things smartphone.....
So basically I feel like someone playing dualing banjo's at a mensa meeting.
well now that the self-deprication is out of the way my questions I am hoping to get some answers to.
First of all I am considering getting the Xperia x1 through Rogers. Being canadian its my only choice other than paying an insane amount for an unlocked......
I am worried rogers has totally locked down the phone though. I have only scratched the surface of all the cool stuff that can be done with this phone.
Just glancing at the mod section of this forum made my head spin.
Anyways if anyone here has the rogers version of the x1 could you please let me know if its a shackled broken version of its unlocked stupid expensive self.
If not would it be a endurance trial to get it unlocked? From the tiny bit of research I have done so far I am pretty sure paying someone else to do it would be my only option.
Being able to do it myself would be a happy suprise though. Hell not having to unlock it at all would be the best suprise of all.....
Anyways thats enough of a rant for my first post. I really hope all you knowlegable people don't mind me picking your brain.....
Thanks in advance.
You don't need to unlock. Just Hard-SPL (there is a tutorial in the stickies at the beginning of the ROM forum) and then you can flash with any custom ROM you like.
There are also an abundance of cabs that you can use to customize your device in a variety of ways, whether you choose stock ROM or a custom one.
If you want to migrate to a different provider there are options to SIM unlock your phone, but if all you want is to get rid of Rogers garbage that is on your phone, read up on Hard-SPL and then look at some of the custom ROMs.
Hope this helps a little.
I will look up the Hard-SPL right away....
Though it sounds perfect I don't want to get my hopes up to high. If its to complicated and there is any chance of me bricking the x1 I don't know if it will be worth it.
Then again if I read the tutorial until my eyes bleed I should be able to do it blindfolded....
Anyways dude it more than helps its amazing I really appreciate the info. While I have your attention 2 more questions about the x1 if I could.
First does it double as a decent media player? I have been looking for one for a LONG time and having it combined with my phone would be convenient.
For movies, anime,tv shows and audio books.....just to name some media I would use it for.
And second can the X1 connect to any wireless internet source or do you have to have internet through your cell provider?
Thanks again. Cheers!
It's got Wi-Fi, so don't worry about that. You can tap into Wi-Fi same as you would on any laptop.
As far as media player... well that depends. It can play a lot of different file types by default. There is a Media Xperience Panel that organizes things pretty well (There are a lot of versions of this floating around, be sure to get a good one for you - took me a while). Unfortunately hardware acceleration only really seems to work in old-fashioned Windows Media Player on the device.
There are third-party software solutions like Kinoma and Core Player that are pretty and nice, but their performance may suffer on high-res videos.
I'd recommend trying different solutions. If you are trying to watch full WVGA (800X480) video you may want to launch with Windows Media Player (I hate it, but your video will look smooth and beautiful), but if you are going to be watching WQVGA (400X240) resolution or lower video many other choices could be good.
Sorry, if that part of the answer is long-winded, but I am trying to wind-up a lot of info I have accumulated on the subject into one post. For more detailed info you may want to search the forums. I know there is video conversion software and info here somewhere.
Some Xperia users have been very happy with video performance, others have not. So this is something that will likely be subjective.
Music, though, works great (I use bluetooth headphones) and it has a regular headphone jack, if you are so inclined to use it. I listen to all my podcasts from my Xperia, which I download off of my Wi-Fi connection at home. So no need to sync or transfer or anything.
High-Res screen on the Xperia also makes picture viewing very enjoyable.
Hope this answers your questions pretty well.
speakers
Just thought I would point out that while sound is great with headphones and fine for talking on the phone, the loudspeaker on the xperia isnt that good,
Also have you considered waiting for the x2?
it has a few software and hardware upgrades, but it will be a little pricy at first and XDA developers wont fully support it cause its not HTC manufactured.
Aside from that The X1 is a great phone, and the price these days is quite good. I have one and Im giving one to my father for christmas.
First of all thank you both for your input.
Reading stuff on the net always comes in second to getting info from people like you.
@Hannigan174 thanks for the honesty about the video. One plus side is though conversion is a pain I would do it. Another plus is I don't give a crap about high-res versions of stuff as long as its watchable. I have seen mixed things about youtube, but I would guess that there is a panel or rom that lets you watch it.
On the Music front its mostly audiobooks I listen to right now so the fact that it will those more than decently is very good.
@Hungry81 Right now I am using the w580i walkman phone. I don't know how the X1's loudspeaker would compare to the 580's....? Its not the end of the world if its not quite as good though.
And I am always thinking about waiting for the new and better thing....
But my 580 is REALLY showing its age and the x1 is very enticing.
But this does lead me to something else thats been nagging me.....
Rogers also carries the HTC Dream and the Magic. Would either of those compare to the X1?
I know they are completely different animals being WinMo and android but I am OCD about getting the best phone I can.
I wish rogers carried the Hero though, to me the Hero blows the Dream and Magic out of the water.
Anyways opinions on the X1 Vs the 2 HTC's would be appreciated. And thanks again for all the info you guys have already given me.
High Res screen on the X1, and all my Windows Mobile goodies. I would stick with X1.
Now if you like the Android interface, perhaps the Dream would be nice. I really like having a hardware keyboard so the Magic wouldn't be an option for me.
There is a lot more stuff for WinMo right now, and realistically this site makes any WinMo device more appealing than any other smartphone OS. As evidence you should look at the X2 software thread and how quickly they broke down that prototype and extracted all the goodies from it.
I got nothing against Android, and perhaps in a few years when it is more mature I might even migrate to Android. There are even Android development forums here, but the many WVGA apps and resources make the X1 the choice for me.
Keep in mind that what is best is very subjective, and the reasons for me liking my X1 might not outweigh benefits of another device for you.
In summation I chose X1 because:
X1 - More apps, hardware keyboard, WVGA resolution (pretty pretty screen )
I am planning on buying a HTC G1, but after I read that there is only 192mb RAM I decided to wait.
I have a few questions:
1. Can you make a swapfile on the G1?
2. Would there be a big speed/stability difference with 192 and 256 RAM?
3. How does 2.0/2.1 run compared to 1.6?
I will be using this as a PDA, not a phone and will be doing lots of gaming and web browsing on it.
Thank you,

Buy a Nexus......
I would, but I can't afford one

save up for one. Don't get a g1, it's already too outdated. save up and buy a good phone that'll last a while. By the time you have the money tucked away I'm sure you'll see phones even better than the nexus one.
Yes, I already have a high-end winmo PDA, so I am looking for a lower end Android phone.
I agree with others that say to get a different phone. I love my G1 to death, but there's no way I'd buy one today if I were in the market. It's just too limited.
That said, I'll try and answer your questions.
1. Yes, running swap is possible using a rooted phone and custom ROM. It's debated whether this actually helps any.
2. The 192 vs. 256 MB difference helps a great deal. There's just not a lot of memory left to run many apps and do much task switching on the newer iterations of the OS with only 192MB. The number of apps you can install is also limited by this number (unless you're running a rooted phone and installing apps to your SD card.)
3. On a G1, 2.0/2.1 is pretty slow. At this point I wouldn't use it as a daily use ROM.
The two functions you listed as your primary activities are the two things that the G1 does the worst. It's underpowered for a lot of games (not to mention the horrible battery life when you start playing games) and browsing the web can be a chore given the limited memory and CPU. It works great for basic things like email, maps/navigation, music, productivity apps, but it's pretty slow for other stuff.
OK, thank you. That is the kind of answer I was looking for. I will look into some other phones.
The G1 is ideal for what your looking for. Man people love to drift off don't they
Yeah they do...
Has anyone else tried Android 2.1 on their G1?
If you root it, in addition to the debatable swapping to the SD for more ram and cache, you can overclock the things. Probably a bit hard on your battery and might generate unacceptable heat, don't know. You might just get it up to 2/3's to 3/4th's the speed of a Nexus for the cost of a bigger battery. Maybe then you could run 2.1 effectively. Who knows.
I'd buy it used. They go for about $175 on ebay unlocked. If you screw it up you've not lost that much. You can resell your broken one on ebay for about $75

Overall the G1 for me has just been fun to root and flash multiple roms. =P Some roms are moderately fast, but are limited to games as we have no video drivers
Thanks for the good answers. So the Open GL drivers are not available on the G1? And how easy is it to brick a G1. Ive flashed many roms on winmo with no problem.
EDIT: Yes I will overclock. Are the Vid drivers available on the Magic?

Yeah they are
Personally
I preordered a G1... rooted it early in the beginnings of Haykuro and JF... and 16 months later I still say there isnt a replacement... I got a full upgrade and I still havent taken advantage... The N1 is nice, if you can live wo the hard keyboard... If you want a low end android, the G1 is a good starter phone...
I run both 2.1 and 1.6 roms.. The 1.6 roms are really fast, The 2.1 roms are worth having on your phone to show off... I can stream music on 3G from 8am to about 230-3pm at work on either so batt life is fine either way on a normal day...
I dont know what kind of gaming you do, but my old school emulators do the trick nicely run on any rom and with the hard keyboard controls are great... I use a ram hack that removes the 3d accelerator for another 8mb of usable ram, so I cant comment on 3d games...
Bricking a G1 is almost impossible now with all the good tutorials... the G1 is the easiest to root, hack, flash, customize... all that in my own eyes... Ive brought noobs down the rabbit hole and now they are cookin up roms and themes like crazy...
I on the other hand still patiently wait for a new bigger better stronger phone (with a hard keyboard) to replace my G1 and I know it will not be in the low end android bracket..

My setiments exactly. Hate to say it but it's just fun to see or learn somthing new.
Good thread for Android noobes.

So far I'm convinced about the G1, thanks everybody. When I found out that the keyboard on the magic would not work with a stylus, and only your fingers, it made it obvious for me.
PS: Can you disable the RAM hack without reflashing?

Not really. You must replace the kernel, so it's basically just as complicated as reflashing.
I'ts simple.
Flash the boot.img and reboot.
All gone.
(and vice versa)
you wont loose any data or anything.
I am curious if the X1a is still a popular phone now that there are so many newer platforms out there, including newer Xperias. At this point I have tried Windows Mobile, Android, and I-OS, so I understand why people might like it so they can customize their phones. Personally, I loved the hardware but found Windows Mobile a bit too frustrating, so I moved on to Android. What do you guys think? Is it even still competitive?
No opinions? I'm just trying to decide if my X1a is worth re-selling...
I love my X1 it just gets cracks way to easily
Xperia X1 is still a great device, the community is huge. If you don't like WM (anymore) then maybe give your X1 a second life with Android. You can find the section here. You can also look at Neopeek forum.
If it's in good shape I would definitely try to sell it. I think 100 - 200 bucks can be made. Don't dispose of it by throwing it away.
I won't tell about other users, but for me xperia is still a perfect device. It's good enough to use as it is- I mean I can listen to my music, and not only mp3 but FLAC also, read books, use the internet, and watch videos - it's actually everything I want from pocket PC! Plus great design, and some bugs not to get bored. I definitely feel sorry that Sony Ericsson stopped producing and supporting them.
Hi, I'm fairly new to forums and i have just bought an android cause i know eventually they will replace Iphones. basically i am just asking for advice like what are the benefits of jailbreaking the android?
also i want to know how to enhance the power of the flashlight, ive seen it done before and cant seem to work it out.
another thing is ive seen someone play playstation games through the phone, im guessing its some emulator but any help on this would be great.
and one last thing how to use the phone to manage and view my PC.
any help on any of this would be really appreciate
thanks in advance
Hello,
I´m new to Dream and flashing etc... (I had Blackstone with android and Nexus S without flashing any custom ROM).
My new Dream will be with me in a few days (weeks? ). Well, I have quite high expectations and I know, stock ROM is not going to meet them. I need:
- battery life - not necesarily best, but I need at least 1 day with wi-fi on
- I need fast ROM - I expect to use some navigation software and I would like to play games like angry birds or Where is my water.
- I need wi-fi tethering, very crucial
- I would like to have live wallpapers
- I want stable ROM with market (Google play) and with no big issues
Well, which ROM is best? Everything except for functions above is not important for me so what is the best ROM for me? I really am not a fan of many hours of flashing, trying and bricking my phone. Every advice is good to me.
Also, I´m completely lost about many things - kernels, radios, memory cards and partitions and all the hacks and such things.
I read a lot - I belive, most popular ROM is FBL? So, what would I need to do with absolutely new Dream to have it? Assuming I didn´t make any preparations at all? How to prepare my phone (ROOT, radios, hacks), how to prepare my microSD card?
But my first question is much more important - I belive I will find way to flash new ROM, it will just take some time (but if there is some allmighty manual, please post it here, thanks). All I really need is good ROM to meet my expectations and any advice you can give me. I´m also ready for some discouragement so if my expectations are too high, I can face it.
Thank you!
for starting out and rooting:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Rooting
after you finished the first process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139&highlight=2708+
then choose your rom --- not too let you down to gently but the 5 must haves you mentioned arent going to be fully found on a g1 - well im happy with it as many others are but these are old phones and what your asking for i dont know if youll get it
Thank you for posting manuals, I will study them.
ok, real must is tethering and everyday usability (stability and speed) and market. I can live with Solitaire for my travels, live wallpapers are nice but I enjoyed them on Nexus S but navigation software would be nice - at least fluent navigation with Google maps?
To get THAT look for a barebones version of android: They are only with basic apps and leave more RAM space on your phone. My first opinion would be to just buy another phone: The g1 is the first android phone ever made and is not that fast with his 450 mhz processor. And just admit: It looks ugly: Not hating g1, i have one too
I know you have high expectations, however you wont meet your requirements with a dream. slow processor and limited RAM makes running many apps impossible. I have a barebones gingerbread rom right now, no gapps, and still tends to suffer (mytouch 3g, same as the dream, just with more internal storage and no slide out keyboard)
Ok, I thank all of you. Then I would choose fastest and most stable ROM availiable with possibility of wi-fi or USB tethering. It is froyo feature so I need at least froyo. Did anyone try some navigation software like Sygic or MapFactor Navigator Free (requires Gingerbread) with Dream? If it isnt usable even with fastest ROMs, I wont have to choose ROM with navigation software in mind.
i recomend trying out lots of roms, many good one
start off with froyobylazslo (dorianx has a nice ics theme for this too!) and use brutmaps.apk and navigation will be ok and you will have wifi and tethering no problem
then try some other roms
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Yeah, the G1 was a good phone (3 years ago), we all switched to other ROMS but we develop things because we like to do things. All these people want to push the phone to its limits, and we did. Maybe over the limit. Remember this is the founding father of all android phones. Bye!
finished
After few days with Android 1,6 I decided to upgrade to ezgb. One time I was scared (after flashing hardspl android wouldn´t boot and I didn´t have tools to transfer new rom to SD card so I had to buy microSD-SD card adapter and copy files using notebook SD card reader). After that, it was easy and now I have ezgb... Well, I expected it would be slower, so I´m satisfied.
