Dead PNA? Any advice pls? - Off-topic

Hi there,
I know this isn't a PNA forum, but this pna was my mobile videoplayer etc
A year ago i bought myself a nice pna for only 20 euro's (not that much)
its a NVA-03560
Basicly a decent wince 5.0 device.
Nice thing, but it had bad navigation software on it, so i put igo Primo on it, wich was working fine.
After a few months i decided to upgrade it with a few more navigation softs on it, but then i start messing with registry of wince 5.0.
Now i have a device wich is crashing on startup, because of a bad registry, and it won't bypass the error in any way.
i still get connection with pc, but i can't acces the registry from there (it's not an active sync device, it just shows the drive like an SDcard.
Anyone here knows a sollution or is it a "trow away"?
regards,
Robin

hard reset the device.

already tried,
Even disconnected internal battery, still the error when i start.
Edit: is there anyway to maybe autorun something from sdcard before anything else launches?
the error i get is something like this: error 2 depend 9999

PDA2K: upgrading ROM with a Mac (and Virtual PC)

I've stuggled on with the unreliable ROM that my PDA2K came with because I have been unsuccessful at upgrading using my Mac and Virtual PC 7 (Windows XP).
I don't have access to a PC, and wondered whether anyone could give me any guidance.
Is it possible to upgrade the rom directly from the device itself, or are there ROM installers for other Blue Angel phones that would work via Virtual PC?
Any help very welcome - but please give as much detail as possible if telling me to install or change things manually. I've read posts about 'extended roms' and taking bits from here and there and I've no idea what this is about.
hello fellow mac user
What exactly is the problem?
ANy error messages? are you trying via BT or USB ?
HI,
When I tried to upgrade previously the PDA2K's screen showed USB but I got an error (sorry I cant remember the number code; radio upgrade error or something).
Recently, and I don't know what's changed, I just get Error 101: Connection Failure. When I try to run the upgrade the device does a soft reset at the beginning, then there is a long pause then I get the error. It seemed to manage more previously (may be that was an earlier from upgrade, but it never worked anyway!).
Have you been successful from your Mac?
Just looked back at my old posts on the howard forums, and discovered it was Error 114 I was getting previously (with the first ROM upgrade). I presume I'm getting the 101 connection error now that I'm trying to use the latest ROM upgrade.
One thing I'm about to try myself is to switch off both the windows and Mac OS X firewalls just in case they are interfering with the process.
Just to be more specific:
It comes up with the info from the phone and the upgrade, then I click next to start the upgrade; the device does a soft reset then repeatedly the device says it's connecting to host, the PC says reading info from device; then after a while I get error 101. As soon as the ROM upgrade installer quits, then Activesync reconnects the device (as guest).
Are the ERK files supposed to be run from the device? Will this help me? I've just downloaded one, and downloaded a thing called WinRAR but the resulting files say they aren't Win32 applications; and most of the contents of the folder are .rar files even after I extracted it. Wierd. Please can someone help!
Oh well, it's getting late here in the UK, I will just have to try again another time. Going to have to reinstall everything again now (as I have after every failed attempted at a ROM upgrade over the past few months). This is the last time I buy anything with a Microsoft operating system!!!!
Can anyone help?
Anyone?
Hi
Sorry but I don't think I am going to be much help.
I too am a Mac user with VPC and happily ActiveSync every day using VPC 7.01.
HOWEVER I would never try and use VPC to do something as basic as a ROM upgrade.
I managed to borrow a PC from someone at work and used that for the upgrade. I went on the basis that a ROM upgrade is so basic to the device and would likely need real PC hardware that I would not risk it.
Is there no colleagure, friend or workmate that can help you out?
Regards.
Robin
Hi,
Thanks for replying. I had bought Virtual PC because I just couldn't find any other way of getting a lot of the software onto the iMate. Having made this investment I hoped it would work with the ROM upgrade too.
I did manage to get use of a PC yesterday, but unfortunately it didn't work either. The PDA2K reset itself at the start, then after a delay the updater gave error 101 connection error, exactly the same as with Virtual PC.
Later, I managed to get someone really helpful at i-mate on the live support (and for once it didn't time out) and I went through a few things, including pressing power-reset-record (so that USB is displpayed) and trying from there. It still didn't work, I got Error 114 after the updater sat at 0% for several minutes.
This leads me to the exact reason I didn't want to have to rely on someone elses PC: having access to it for a limited time I tried repeatedly the ROM upgrade yesterday with no success. Later, at home, I got help from iMate and some ideas that will be trying again with a PC, but now I've got to wait for another opportunity to use a PC. What concerns me, is if I ever get a major problem the phone may be unusable until I next get access to a PC. Worse still - if the phone locks up when I'm using the PC and I don't have the time/knowledge to resolve it, I could end up with a non-functioning phone. It's much easier to tinker with these things in the comfort of my own home when time is less of an issue.
I just received my K700i yesterday. I decided enough was enough. I'm going to sell the PDA2K as soon as I've got the ROM sorted out. I really did try to get on with this device but it's caused me more grief than I have ever had with an electronic device before. I learned a lot, setting up GPRS, wifi, bluetooth, found all sorts of useful software, used VNC to control my Mac remotely etc etc, but at the end of the day I just couldn't rely on it. Some days I could get email, some days I couldn't. Some days people would receive the SMS I sent, some days they didn't. Sometimes the people I was calling could hear me, sometimes they couldn't. Sometimes the phone would stay switched off, sometimes it turned itself on and drained the battery. The list of problems I had with this phone were endless. Hence why I was trying to get the ROM upgraded.
I understand your concenr and problem.
I actually have the latest ROM installed on mine and I STILL get someof the problems you describe.
Only Microsoft could get away with writing such a crap operating system to run a phone.
And i-mates issues just compund the Windows issues.
Good luck.
Robin
ive never bothered even trying to run activesync thru vpc. It was a bit hit and miss on my XDA1 so as soon as my xda2i arrived i just bought missing sync from mark space. Hassle free syncing and installing, plus the ppc gets mounted like a mass storage device too.
Trouble is I use Outlook at work and need to sync it to my PDA.
I cannot even use Entourage as we are a) running to old a version of Outlook server and b) Missing Sync will not sync with Entourage.
I am stuffed both ways.
Robin
Me again!
Just thought I'd let everyone know that I did indeed succeed first time on a PC today (having pressed power-reset-record to go into bootloader mode first).
So, as everyone told me, it was necessary to use a PC, and Virtual PC on a Mac just wont work.
I'm getting on ok with my K700i, although the email seems a bit limiting (doesn't seem to have message titles displayed, and a short limit to the length of the email).
My plan: use the K700i for a few weeks and see how I get on, then perhaps I might try the newly upgraded PDA2K for a few weeks, and see which I prefer.
The other complicating factor is that the SIM free Treo 650 has just become available, but I'm going to hold fire on that for now. Perhaps if I'm not happy with either the K700i or the upgraded PDA2K then I might consider it...

tomtom 5 stuck

Hallo,
I recently bought TomTom navigator 5. apart of the fact that v5 didn't install in WM5 and I had to wait for release 5.2, now I have this big problem: the program gets stuck trying to load the maps.
I tried copying the maps manually to the SD card. if I unplug the SD, tomtom complains that there are no maps and closes. if I plug again the SD, the program gets stuck and I can't do anything else (it freezes the whole device)
any clue?
thanks
you need 5.21 update (wm5 most compliant).
you can download it from tomtom.com
BR
I already have 5.21, it was a typo...
the problem is that it gets stuck when loading maps from the SD card...
it otherwise loads doesn't find the maps, and closes. but the program IS correctly installed...
thanks
m8...its happened to my sometimes on my exec that I had to uninstall via activ sync and reinstall again to correct...make sure you also have an empty folder named tomtom on the root of the sd and another on the root of the poquet pc and be sure that the map you have is correct for tomtom 5 .
BR
I tried, and it doesn't work (sigh sigh)
Also, I tried changing the SD card (you never know) but nothing changed.
all folders are present, though I had to create the one in the SD card.
still freezes *sigh*
also, tomtom help doesn't help at all, and I hate spending money for a non working software
m8...what version windows are you running....wm5 or 2003?
another thing ...I got stuck like that once after already having installed twice on two other xda2s's running the exact latest rom from 02... that time i shortcuted it by not installing any voices insted i put the voices folder on the card and put voices in there....that gave me this problem also.....installed a couple of voices from the disc on to the xda memory and voila its working like a charm.
BR
I'm running wm5, standard (no tuma-ivan-etc)
I'll try as you suggested this evening, I hope to solve it
thanks for your help!!
TomTom is one of the crappiest, buggiest piece of commercial software I've seen in a long time. Once you get it up and running it's usually OK for a month or two, but it generally soils its underwear after a short time and needs a reinstall.
I mean, 5.21, how long as 5 been out? 21 minor revs since then? Do they actually test their software, or just ship it and wait for the users to do it for them? I work in the industry and I am far from impressed with them. Especially given what it costs.
Any how, as I said, periodically you need to completely clean it out. Remove all folders. Delete your map directory on the SD card and copy over the original copy of the map you purchased. Delete all of the program directories it makes. I found as many as 6 or 7 directories on my storage card where it's scatterbrain configuration liked to hide data. Once I had to completely cull it from the registry to get it going, all keys with "navigator" and "tomtom" were suspect. Beware tho, "navigator" might be in there through other applications.
Oh, another thing to check...sometimes it gets sadomasicistic and decides to set a config file or two as read only. One day it's working, the next it fails to remember settings changes. You can fix that one without a reinstall if you can figure out which file it is (generally the map config file).
However, despite all this, sometimes you need to hard-reset to get it going again.
thanks to all, but I think I found a good solution.
I brought back the software to the vendor and changed it with navigator pn. it works perfectly
it's more of a workaround than a solution, but hey - at least I gave my money to a company that deserves it.
thanks destinator!

Garmin Mobile XT broken

The other night my Garmin app locked up on my kaiser and I had to power cycle the phone to get it out of the lock up.
Now when ever I run the Garmin app it fails to run and gives the following pop up error message...
""Data type misalignment at Program address 0x03F966C8 in background thread NULL (Main InitInstance)""
I have removed the Garmin app from the phone and reinstalled it from the SD Card
I have done the above after installing a newer version from the Garmin site
and neither have worked, I have mail Garmin but they haven't responded after 2 days now !!
anyone got any ideas as to what I need to do here
Thanks
Same Problem
I encountered the same problem and googled around a little bit. Turns out that some people recommended a hard reset of the device. I performed it, and reinstalled all my software (probably should have installed garmin first). I have yet to reinstall garmin on my device. I suggest backing up your software and trying a hard reset. I am not positive as to what causes this error, are you storing pictures and videos on the same card as Garmin? If so, i was doing the same and it may have corrupted it. Regardless, the only viable solution i can see for you would be a hard reset.

VOIP??

I installed some .cab files for Voip... but now my gps is broken TomTom is unable to find my internal GPS... and when i do a hard reset it works again. but when i install that VOIP again the GPS is again gone? maybe i used an wrong version that is only for HTC or something? is there a .cab for the Xperia so i can use VOIP and the internal speaker... and with working GPS ?
I hope someone can help me.
Please use search option, it already has been mentioned before.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=522854
you may wanna try 'agephone mobile', a standanlone voip client, also known as a softphone.
Thnx for the reply, i did use search and google etc... BUT i have no one seen with the same problem as me? when i install voip cab my GPS dies? i will reset it now and try urs. I have an orginal Vodafone NL rom should work right?
So i did all the things, now VOIP works great... i can hear with my internal speaker. But my GPS is dead again any idea why? is it because of the original ROM ?
Hi there,
Have you tried to enable the G3 connection settings?? It says you have to delete two registry entries. I did that and also lost the use of my internal GPS. I will try to recreate it tomorrow (was smart enough to write down what was inside the registry entries) and see if that helps....
Greetings,
Andreas
Well, i tried allot... im now currently using SJphone... but it takes allot of cpu/mem? my phone is really slow when its turned on. would be nice if u got an solution...
i don't own an xperia anymore, but once again, i never had any problems using voip and gps. There might be a conflict if you happen to use some sort of tweak program like advanced config or xperia tweak. i am not sure about it, since i don't use any tweaking programs as the roms i use/choose are already optimized for daily use.
I am still using agephone mobile and i'm still happy i found the program. i must have save already about hundred euro's of phone costs.
Would a hard reset be the way to go in getting GPS to work again? Or do you think there is some other option to enable it again. Can't be physically broken afterall.
Or some kind of fix??
Greetings,
Andeas
Hi there,
Well, I restored the original registry keys but that didn't budge )-: My GPS is still as dead as a doornail. I honestly believe that a hard reset is the only way to go from there. Might be a good idea anyway because the TouchFlow 3d that I installed didn't work properly anyway. Unfortunately.
I've got a dutch rom too btw: KPN Mobile.
Still, if anybody knows a way to re-enable the internal GPS without the hard reset I'd be very happy.
Greetings,
Andreas
did you happen to activate agps? well, you should leave it disabled as i can not see the advantage of it since quickgps already provides you of a quick fix.
i don't know either what gps had to do with voip, causing the problems you have now.
I'd suggest to do a hard reset and do not install any optimizing tools, just the voip and you nav app and see how it works.

Toooooo long loading times...

Hey guys,
I bought a HTC Touch Diamond in Dec 2008 and it was more or less fine until a few weeks ago when it just messed everything up. I brought it back to the store and got a new one last Friday. I was busy setting it up the whole weekend (installing Skype, Palringo, Fring, registry editor, .cab-file to get rid of the problem that the keyboard is not changing back to letters (was stuck in numeric mode), Google maps didn't work etc etc.
But now I have a new weird problem. After all the installations, everything worked fine. Then I started to put some pictures via bluetooth on the device, all fine, but out of a sudden, it's so sloooooooow!!! First I thought it's not working at all anymore, but by now I found out that it just takes ages to open programs, e.g. File Explorer, Browser, Settings... or when I receive a sms or email and click on it to open it fully... doesn't matter what I do, except using touch flo, this is working fine. And when the programs are finally running (after no joke about a minute), they are running very fast.
I have a Vodafone branding but am using it with an o2 sim. I never did a rom update or anything.
Does anybody know what that could be and could you help me???
Of course I could just return it again, but it would really suck as I just set it up, put all the contacs on etc (Active Sync isn't working as my pc has vista...), so it would be really great if anybody could help me!!!
Cheers,
mondiera

To save you a lot of time. You do not have to install some kind of ActiveSync on Vista. It is included and called DeviceCenter. Just a new name but with the same functionality as ActiveSync.
Did you soft-reset the device when noticing that it takes to much time to load an application?
Did you disable TouchFlo (eats a lot of RAM) for some time to see what happens?
Hey,
Thanks for answering so quickly... Yes, I did MANY resets, but it doesn't help. I also deleted a lot of files again, but didn't help either, and there's not much on the device anyway (data storage 51.45MB full, 34.37MB free, program storage 64.14MB full, 46.90 free, internal storage just 37.72MB full). And yes, I also enabled touchflo but it didn't help as well. As I said, touchflo is working fine, when the programs are running they are very quick within the application (quicker than my old device was), but UNTIL they are open, it really takes about 40-60 seconds - just not acceptable!
And thanks for the tip with the Vista Device Center, but I just connected the phone via usb, opened this Vista Device Center, clicked on settings, chose usb/bluetooth etc, the device asked whether to connect via Active Sync which I confirmed but now nothing is happening? And Vista Device Center says it's not connected...? This phone is really driving me insane! Seems like I have to return it again because I really can't work with it being sooo sloooooow :-(

I think you should. Maybe you should first try to connect to ActiveSync with your next device and after that start installing.
I'm sorry that I can't help you out.
You hav a faulty memory chip. Get it replaced.

Thanks guys, I think I will... I really can't keep it like that. And if even you don't know a solution, I will get it replaced. Thanks anyway!!
