Anyone know how to go back to stock from the .893 update? - Motorola Droid Bionic

Long story short the vzw rep told me to install the leaked update saying it would fix my 3g connection problems (which it didn't) and now I'm stuck with no root. I would like to either get root or go back to stock if thats possible. Is it possible to use the sbf and go back? Any help would be appreciated.

The VZ rep told you to install a leak? That sounds a bit shaky.

Won't work.
If I'm not mistaken. There is no way to go back to release stock. Since that update updated the bootloader / or kernel, FXZ ( SPF ) which ever you perfer to call it won't work since the updated bootloader.
sucks i know.
I have never heard about a vzw rep telling you to install something that is leaked. (most of the time voids warranty.)
About the only thing i can tell you is to try to get a hold of @p3droid on twitter and try to get a root method from him for test. but that may be unlikely but could be worth it if your willing to test stuff for him.
Anyway, Good luck with the phone.
I hope you get it

A Verizon rep telling you to install a leak... that reminds me of the Verizon store near me. They're (almost) all a bunch of idiots, at least every one I've encountered in there was. One guy tried to tack a note onto my account saying that my insurance should be removed since I "rooted" my phone, when I actually just had go launcher running. wasn't actually rooted at that time, I know better than to tread in their turf with the Superuser hanging around.
Couldn't he just apply the FXZ image since that's basically a whole phone image?

Ya the phone functions now just sucks not having root. Luckily I got a replacement on the way already I would just prefer to keep my original bionic than taking a chance with a re-certified one.

Ya dude they aren't the brightest but I couldn't get data on 3g at all the airplane toggle, factory reset, and sbf didn't fix it so I took the plunge to the latest leak with no success. When you call the tech people up on the phone they read from a script and its like dude I already factory reset a battery pulls not gonna fix it.....

For what it's worth, I've been seeing some issues with 3G lately myself, but I'm in an area where we have had LTE for less than two weeks. Every time I use 3G only, I get network issues as well, so my guess was it's just Verizon doing backend things and ****ing with the network.

My gf's thunderbolt gets 3g data that was 2 feet away from my bionic. It was the phone not the network.

Well, there goes my effort No LTE your way yet I'm guessing?

this reminds me of .... well, nothing.. but.. it does suck and it made me laugh.. i really am sorry about your trouble and im glad you are getting a replacement but.. damn.

Bionics 3g radio just sucks! Period! The 4g on the other hand tends to work almost normal. I have messed with 3 different bionics and have had the same results..

I also had a vzw dummy say my DROIDX was rooted too cuz I was running LPP. I just looked at him and said... are you serious. I think we all know not to take a phone into vzw while rooted. I would talk to the store manager that some1 had told you to install a leak. Make sure this doesn't get tagged as your fault.

You'll get a few reps that are actually into their devices. But few and far in between. When I see an android device and see it's not rooted. My look of enjoyment turns to disgust. Lol.

You did say that you're having another sent out to you right? Yeah no root is no good. Although when I first got mine I was really impressed with it unrooted. Told myself to play with it for a while unrooted but I just couldn't do it. Ha ha.
But it seriously needs a radio update. Its horrible. My thunderbolts radio blew this outta the water.

[Q] Rooting will put a red flag on your account?

I went to Verizon today to help get my friend get a phone. And the guy (who is actually pretty cool and tech-savy) who helped me get my Droid Bionic happened to be working. As he was setting up my friends phone we were talking about cool things to do with my Bionic. He asked if I had it rooted, and I told him I did. He advised me to unroot it because, "Verizon is sending out 'spikes' and tracks who rooted their phones, will fry your SIM card, and put a flag on your account". I understand that rooting voids your warranty and is a breach to your contract. But is what he said true?
I had a LG G2X and a HTC HD7, both have been rooted and never been "spiked or fried".
Nope. Total BS.

Yes, you will be fine. If you are worried about big red knowing your rooted, in the future try not telling the guy you rooted lol
Phones that have been rooted/modified will generally be refused service(as in troubleshooting) and/or warranty exchange. And generally the account will be notated that the customer has a modified device so that if he tries to go to another store, they will know. If you're smart enough to root it, then you should be smart enough to fix whatever you broke. This is part of the reason why I hate one-clicks.
Or do a damn NAND before you flash/modify something.
That said, you should be aware that some app/service vendors have ways of preventing their things to be installed on a rooted phone. I think both Blockbuster and Netflix have toyed with this, for instance. In those cases, you'll have to wait around for someone to get a fix out.

So if I don't tell them that it's rooted, and they don't see it, will Verizon be able to know through their network? Because I was having trouble sending and receiving text messages a couple days ago and was working with the rep to get it resolved. I'm sure he knew it was rooted. Then he called tech services and they worked on it for about an hour or so. Neither of them mentioned anything about my rooted device or denied me help because of it.
I actually have the netflix app on mine rooted and strapped. No problems here. But its true some apps do know and care for sure.

I was @ best buy and found out their phone warranty ($10 month, no deductible) covers rooted phones!!! Couple that with the buy back program which is top notch and I was scratching my head wondering why any of us would ever buy directly from big red or anybody. They also have the "mail in rebates" as immediate rebates.
If you like having the latest and greatest though, especially if you like rooting, best buy is the spot. Makes me wanna talk my buddy out of his upgrade (on my account) just so I can do it there...lol

No there's no way to tell. If you actually told them ' I rooted my phone ' they would quickly tell you that none of their support team can help you, or if you get a nice person they would say that and still continue to try and help you- but they have no obligation to help you with a rooted phone.
Rooting your phone basically means you will not get any support from them (only if they know you rooted it).

I've returned phones without unrooting them and they've never said anything. I do suggest making it look as much like stock as you can (dont return it with custom boot animations or themes). I dont think they look at the returned phones in all that much detail. You obviously don't want it looking all customized because then they don't have to look too hard.

On a side note, the last person you want to listen to is a instore cellphone sales Rep. They know less than anyone. Its industry standard for them to have their workers being clueless.
I've actually been in a store and was able to help other customers better than they could. I won't let them help me with anything other than ringing up my purchase and hope they get that right and not overcharge me (one time on sprint, they messed up my package and I was getting charged for data usage and ran up my phone bill and they shut off the phone days later for running up the bill by using too much data even though it was supposed to be unlimited)

Well they are obviously working on it as there have been many leaked OTA files. There was 5.5.893, 5.6.8933, 5.7.893, 5.7.894 and most recently 5.8.894. I installed the first three of those and all of them really improved my data issues. It's not perfect yet, but it seems to get better and better. I think by the time the final OTA is released and pushed out to phones, it will solve the data issue, hissing headphone issue, camera issue and improve battery life.
Good luck.

Man, this is exactly what turned me to hating Samsung/AT&T. This is the same crap they pulled with the Captivate. "Oh yeah, you'll get that update in October"
Thought I was able to breathe easy since I went with a Moto phone this time around. That they wouldn't screw the users like Samsung was. Guess not.
Guess I shouldn't expect ICS before 2013 either
FWIW, I had severe issues dropping data while on a road trip and at one point my phone would only connect when 4G was available. Before the road trip I was having issues losing connection with both 4G/3G. Long story short, I called cust service and was eventually xferred to the 4G dept. They pushed a "hybrid" PRL to my phone that was supposed to help pick up older Alltel towers, my phone has been pretty much flawless ever since then. And this was over 2 months ago.

Verizon tech just told me to ROOT my phone

Thought this was very odd. I was on phone with tech support cuz my phone bricked itself today. not sure how or why i wasnt even using it. The tech sending me replacement suggested i root my phone because it would help a lot with the random reboot issue i originally had called ina bout last week.
Proceeded to tell me that Verizon does not care if you root as long as the factory data reset will work as intended for them.
Didnt know if this information was well known or not just thought it was odd that a tech tell me to root my phone.

yeah that is what he was saying (he was telling me how he rooted his and was using cwm as well) but he said that verizons policy is that as long as the "STOCK" factory reset takes it back to original condition then they will not persue anything any further. (which btw is stock zv7 right now) the new phone they shipped me doesnt have zv8 yet either.
who knows i just thought i would elaborate what the tech told me.
the phone i sending back had CWM on it and wouldnt boot or charge battery. so i manage to get it into emergency mode and left it for about 18 hours which gave me almost 35 % charge( seems very low) but i managed to push the zv7 tot and revivie it to send back. YAY
Vzn and root
There is a lot of misconception about rooting, I used to co manage a vzn reseller.
If you go to the android market there are root apps all over the place, if rooting voided any warranties there would be huge liability issues for legal software developers and customer uproar. Plus the hardware OEMS would not alllow it to be sold legally. Rooting is a software change you are not hacking or modifying hardware here. Plus android is marketed as open source unlike iphone OS.

Oh man, I totally did that when I had gotten my Revo. Fortunately Thecubed was around, and he took control of my computer and fixed the phone. It was awesome. I recall the battery taking for ever to recharge. We had to wait 30 minutes before we could try anything. We needed enough juice to run ADB and push stuff to my phone.

Yeah they Dont care, but brick one & try to get a replacement in warranty if you do.
Last month i made a boo boo installing Clockwork Mod and locked it up.
While they were very helpful, nice, and understanding; And a couple weeks later when I came in with my repaired phone (thanks to un_brickable) were more than happy to get me back online with a new sim card (I had to use my sons old HTC Incredible until I FINALLY found the fix). The warranty is now VOID and I was NOT going to get a new one.
I also dropped the protection plan & bought a "development" Revolution off of E-bay. So if i blow one up i can be back up & running in a couple minutes. cheaper in the long run.
Sometimes being Honest doesnt pay off. But in the end I have a BETTER phone for the experience. (2 of them actually)

Rooted phones are a liability...
For Verizon. The reps don't care (of course), but the main company does. It does void your warranty if they find out about it.
See, the tethering apps, Google navigation, Google voice, etc, etc are all lost profits. This is especially true with this phone, where in stock form, they nickel and dime you for "Verizon Navigation," "Verizon Voicemail," and "Verizon Tether."
Another negative impact for them is the number of returns the early rooting and experimentation process creates. I can remember the number of "forced failures" and nit-picking occurring on my old Eris when people were flashing the leaked upgrade that permanently disabled root, just so they had an excuse to return them.
The Verizon reps are "next-to-minimum-wage," 18-30 year old employees who could give a rat's patootie what you do with your phone. The RMA techs, on the other hand, may not be so forgiving.

[Q] New owner - what are the known issues?

My fiance is getting the Bionic, it's expected early next week. What are the known problems with this phone so we know what to expect?
Oh, and this wasn't a phone of either of our choice, Verizon kinda forced it on her. She had her phone stolen at work and Verizon offered to give her this phone for a price, but give up her upgrade next yr and sign a 2 yr agreement. When we tried asking for another phone, we got a firm "we can't do that." I know, really bad deal... I may try calling on her behalf to get that straightened out tonight.
But in case we're stuck, I was just curious about the problems.
What phone did she have? What phone would you and her rather have had? Since you're showing a little hate, I'll show a little love........... Bionic is the best phone out there, you won't find anything better.
Most of the issues have been resolve with the updates love the phone have had it since launch very fast and no lags in the software 4g is great, only issue is a data drop maybe once a week when switching from 4g to 3g.

I didn't mean to give the impression I was expecting this to be a terrible phone. Just as getting anything new, you want to know what to expect. I'm an avid Android user and know the specs. The phone seems to be a great phone, but it can be a bit harder to investigate any problems with it. I was hoping someone would say the bugs were worked out, so thank you for that. The hate comes from the way Verizon kind of screwed her out of an upgrade without any choice of phone. We didn't know what we would have rather had yet, but having known it would be giving up an upgrade, we would have liked to look into what is available and actually have a choice.
But the Bionic IS an upgrade from what she had before. She had the LG Revolution which was a terrible experience. Thanks for the feedback though. Like I said, I was just trying to get a better idea of what to expect. (Thanks buttons have been clicked)

I just got my bionic yesterday on a warranty swap (had an LG Revolution also... went through 3 of them before they gave me another option). All I had to pay for was a battery and battery door.
Rooting it is now fairly easy. ICS builds are out there, but I'm not satisfied with the quality try for daily use. One you root it and ROM it, first thing to do is wipe battery stats.

Wow, lucky you. They'll do anything to get more money from ya (us) huh? They're reasoning is they're letting her upgrade over a year early - hence the reason for no choice.

I appreciate the rom tips, but she refuses to go that route - I tried. I've rooted and flashed countless roms on 3 phones i've owned, but she isn't comfortable letting that happen. so, her use will always be 100% stock. But since we're on the topic, any promise of an official ICS update? I'll look into this myself if no one cares to answer. I'm sure that's easy to find.
Motorola has promised ics but there is no set date for it.

Some nice things
I just got mine a couple of weeks ago. While you did ask about known issues, I guess it's only fair to mentions some positives as well.
1. The 4g, at least in my area (around Baltimore), is pretty great.
2. Patching the mobile hotspot is fairly easy, (if you don't mind spending a couple of bucks on the right app) which is quite useful if you're grandfathered with unlimited data.
3. The lapdock can be quite useful - emphasis on "can" - as you can have a full blown linux OS running on it (takes some nerdiness to get it working nice, but I honestly think it's well worth it since I paid only about $70 for my lapdock).
4. Rooting the phone is extremely easy.
5. If you mess anything up, restoring it to its original state is fairly easy and mostly fool proof (as with all motorola android phones) using RSD Lite.
Got mine about 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love the way it works. My wife upgraded as well to her first smartphone, but sadly she chose the Samsung Charge. When I showed her the pink theme for Eclipse 2.2 she was having 2nd thoughts on her choice. Over all a damn good device and lots of different options for it.

The data drop issues I had were resolved with the leaked .904 update. Fairly simple to apply and the phone stays stock since its just an update, maybe you need to root. (I was rooted when I applied it and had to reroot after.)
Other then that I would occasionally get duplicate texts and it would get rather annoying getting the same text multiple times, one time it didnt stop so I had to reboot (note that this is same in stock as well as roms and messaging apps).
Since then I disabled the timestamp option in the text messaging and it seems to have resolved it. (2 days with no duplicates) I re-enabled it to see if it would start doing it again to see if the timestamps are the actual root cause of the problem.
Those were my only issues with Stock. Since then I have been running Eclipse and have been loving it.

DROID Charge?? that's a terrible choice.

saying bye to the droid 3

ok i called verizon today and told them i did not get my replacement droid 3 they put it on the lost and stolen list and told me they had no more droid 3s and they upgraded me to the samsung galaxy nexus 4g and i also get to keep my unlimited internet but as i will not have a droid 3 no more i will not be on this part of the fourm that much but i will still come see how every thing is going from time to time i will miss you guys and you have made my stay here very good and i wont to thank every one of you guys and all of the developers on the fourm who has made my droid 3 the best phone that i ever had and more i hope the galaxy nexus forms on xda is just as awesome.
Can anyone else confirm that Verizon is upgrading people replacing Droid 3s? Mine is breaking and I have insurance but I didn't want to pay the deductible for another d3. If they are upgrading people to the galaxy nexus I'd be all over it.

How did you guys do this? I just called the asurion insurance number and they told me I would be receiving a droid 3. Who did you two talk to that said they would send a nexus? I backed out at the end because I didn't want to pay the $100 today for another droid 3. Maybe I'll try back in 30 days and hope their droid 3 supply runs dry.

Tell them you're not going to pay $100 for a crap stratosphere and hang up. I guess we'll have to try again another day. The only downside is that Asurion will only replace a phone up to 60 days after the damage so now that the claim is opened you'll have to grab a replacement within 60 days if you ever plan to get one.

Sometimes you gotta be stubborn to get what you want. My replacement Nexus 4G LTE is arriving on Thursday!!!!
I'll be calling Big Red tomorrow. Many times... As needed.
Guys stop this, if your going to try and get over on them atleast quit this thread, my phone was actually having issues which I why I called them. This thread attracts negative attention.. And to the poster who intended that verizon was lying about the nexus 4g lte. They weren't, according to their system they aren't even allowed to switch a 3g phone woth 4g. Their is a reason the fascinate or whatever samsung has been accidently showin g up, even tho its also 4g.
But stop this. Xda doesn't need bad attention like this, and if yur really intent on getting at verizon, blabbing about it in one of the biggest known forums surely wont work. They will shut it down quick. Stop posting unless you are also saying bye or have a comment to the op

I am not trying to get over on anyone. I am a paying insurance customer with a broken phone (cracked screen) so I am entitled to a replacement. As-is I looked at the value proposition ($100 for another Droid 3) and didn't deem it worthwhile but if my $100 will yield a nexus replacement then I am willing to pay the deductible. Being informed about my options as an agent in the market doesn't mean that I am "getting at verizon".
bfranclemont said:
HAHAHA - I said I wanted to talk to his supervisor, and two minutes later he comes back with this bull**** story that he clicked on the wrong option in his "tool", and once he "fixed it", his "tool" suggested the Nexus 4G LTE as the recommended replacement!!! Sometimes you gotta be stubborn to get what you want. My replacement Nexus 4G LTE is arriving on Thursday!!!!
THANK YOU leerpsp for this post - I never would have known I could do this!!!!

My apologies to you for the get over part. But this kind of thread will make people just start sending in their phones to get a nexus. Yes people can say its clever but if people start doing that its the wrong kind of attention to be posted at xda.. Im guilty of it from awhile ago I posted a way to get moto attention, but mod explained it to me so now im just watchn out for it.

I understand the concern, but I had a legit broken phone as well. I tried to get a replacement last month and they gave me the same run around (no more DROID3 and had to replace with a Stratosphere). I also tried getting the GNex as a replacement before with no luck either. I did not, and still do not want a stratosphere phone. I thought i was stuck with a D3 with a broken keyboard. But this time, with persistence, I was able to. I'm not trying to instigate a massive "Let's attack Big Red" campaign. I'm just letting people know they don't have to settle with the first option they tell you.

I removed some things I said in the earlier post. You can completely delete it if you would like. Sorry for the negative publicity.
How do you get a GNex? I'm talking to them now and they seem to have all these D3's available to ship! WTF!? :'(
EDIT: My Droid 3 replacement is on its way. ****.
Not that I'm encouraging ppl to scam verizon, but based on what I hear about how they do business, and the way they treating customers, I don't have any sympathy for them. They seem to try to rip everyone off. I'm Damn glad I don't have to deal with them.
Not to mention, im pretty sure we all try to cajole, bargain and intimidate when dealing with large companies like that, just as they offer great deals to new customers and then try screw us once we're hooked.
So in conclusion, don't lie to them and try to replace your perfectly good phone, but if you have legit problems, for sure try to convince them to upgrade you.
