My Bionic will arrive on Monday. Of my 4 other Android phones, I have rooted/rommed the last 3 with great results. I am comfortable with the idea, and welcome anything that enhances the experience. However, I am used to running on bottom tier phones. Rooting/Romming is a nice option, but is it necessary on the Bionic like it was on my Eris? Does the Bionic handle well out of the box?
it does very well out the box but things are always better with root IMO

My Bionic is my 4th Android phone and the only one I haven't rooted and may never root. Its solid out of the box. Fast as heck. To be honest I did root it once for a few hours to play with the dpi but I decided to unroot and stop tinkering with it. Part of the reason I chose this phone was because I wasn't planning on rooting or roming and wanted a solid out of the box experience. I'm running LPP on top of blur and loving it.

Gotta admit, the new blur launcher kinda grew on me

Yeah I wish ADW had this blur feature on it.
I had lots of hardware problems with my thunderbolt (the reason I have this phone) but it ran better stock than the bionic. I agree that the new blur isn't as bad as it use to be it still slows these phones down. I would root and debloat at least, however I prefer a ASOP style Rom as they are the fastest.

After 22 months of the Eris -17 months rooted - I bought a Bionic last week and decided to run it stock for as long as possible (and definitely as long as the 14 day return period) - including the stock launcher, which isn't fantastic, but not awful. Anyway, the phone is fine out of the box, as it is. Besides the annoyance of seeing the pre-loaded apps that I do not want, including the occasional market update of those apps, the Bionic is fine.
So far no black screen of death (BSOD) for me; I'm on WiFi most of the time, but I've seen a few 3G data dropouts out and about (where I KNOW that 3G data is fine), but none since I followed this trick: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-bionic/421050-useful-how-tos-tips.html#post3271941
(Note that this "trick" makes no sense - it's changing the default speech codec. But, no 3G data dropouts that I have noticed since I did it, so....)
As far as I know, rooting fixes neither of those problems, though perhaps I missed something. I think that we're just waiting for a fix from Motorola/VZW.

On my Eris, I found KaosFroyo (Punk.Kaos was a great dev!) and ran with that for a LONG time. Made using the Eris bearable.
Thank you all for your replies! I am looking forward to getting through this weekend! =)

Wow, I came from the same phone and my experience is completely opposite. In fact my stock Bionic runs better than my thunderbolt overclocked. Applications like LPP and car home run noticeably faster. Also Blur has a closer to aosp feel than htc sense does. I too like an aospish experience.

The best out of the box phone I ever had was the Galaxy S 2 for AT&T. This phone is pretty good stock.
what I did though immediately is root the phone (which is the easiest i have done since the captivate) and used an app from the market to remove the bloat apps.
other than that i replaced the launcher after a week and replaced the sms (both with "Go" products) and it runs great.
It's not the processor, the screen, or the battery that makes this phone. It is the LTE and i wouldnt trade that for an LTE-less galaxy s 2 ever.

LPP is inconsistent, on both my Droid X and T bolt it would work on some roms but it was really sluggish on others, even on updates of the same roms. I switched to go launcher because it has what I like from LPP and haven't had a problem since. With the right roms the Tbolt didn't need overclocking, with BAMF stripped and Forever 1 ghz was just as smooth as the same rom overclocked to 1.4 ghz, most other roms needed to be clocked at 1.2 or 1.4 ghz to be as smooth as those roms at 1 ghz.

LPP isn't inconsistent on the Bionic. I ran every tbolt rom imaginable. OMFGB and CM7 were the only ones that compared speed wise. As talented as the BAMF devs are, sense is still sense, heavy and sluggish. By the way, bamf stripped 1.7 was my all time fav tbolt rom and the BAMF devs are my favorite devs.

I currently have an HTC HD7S but being a tech head, I'm getting bored.
Is it worth getting the Thrill or is its already dead in the custom rom area?
Not dead, but calm. In actuality, though, there's been a jumpstart in posting the last couple days and a few have been promising to me. Additionally, GB is now scheduled to be released the 27th for the optimus 3d which should give the thrill a custom gb rom in days by that point. I'm days away from my trade deadline, but I'm staying pretty devoted to the phone I've decided I love. Now if only we could get a stock browser without this damn toolbar at the bottom...

I just picked mine up last Friday. I'm coming off an Atrix, and so far I'm not looking back.
The screen is fantastic, the phone is smooth, and it doesn't seem to have some of the issues the Attic suffers from.
It was between this and the Galaxy S II, and I wanted the HDMI. Also, the Thrill felt better.
Besides gimmick or not, the 3D is cool.

Thanks for the opinions. A family member of my has it and I've had the pleasure of using it. But I'm pretty much set on getting it.
Also, I was reading yesterday the ICS source code is released. Any devs interested in that?
EDIT: Honeycomb is available as well
I was going to say I don't know if I had an upgrade right now if it would be the phone I'd pick. I'd more than likely get a Note. But I've come to really like this phone and wouldn't trade it unless a Thrill with a 4.5 inch screen, 16 gig storage, and ICS came out.
Of course, then it'd still be a Thrill

Hmmmm...I downloaded xScope pro when it was the Amazon free app of the day. But I have yet to use it as my browser. Guess it's time to give it a shot.
IMO, I wouldn't waste my time on the Thrill. I stuck it out for a while thinking that LG actually gave a crap about us, just to be let down. They have committed to a Gingerbread release on the 21st to the International version. No commitment at all to the Thrill other than maybe by the end of December or early January.
With the very slow development going on it, I decided I had enough and jumped to the SGS2 Skyrocket instead. Do I miss the 3D ability?.....Of course. But I gained LTE (when available in my area) and an 8MP camera instead with increased speed over the Thrill and a lot more dev potential (and is going on already).
I would have a hard time now recommending anyone to the Thrill that cares about overall speed and performance, let alone support from the manufacturer. If someone wants 3D and doesn't mind a luke warm device, then the Thrill may suit them fine.
Just my opinion. I had such high hopes for it when I bought it.

Seriously, some people forget it's a phone. Without fast development, it's still a damn good one for now, and with development, it'll be amazing in the future. How many MP my camera is, I couldn't care less. It's more about the size of the cmos sensor than the resolution, and the only phone I'll trade for when it's available, nexus of course, will have one nice 5mp cam. Samsung let me down for way too long with my craptivate, so I can wait a bit for GB again. As for the O3D version, that'll be close enough. Oh, by the time LTE reaches my house (and most), I'm sure I'll be eligable for another upgrade. Loving this phone, despite my few hates.

Ask yourself this question: Do I want ROM selection? The answer to the title of this thread is the opposite of your answer to that question.
If you don't flash ROMs, the Thrill is better than the Atrix or Atrix 2, its definately the best phone in the <$99 price range. But for a little more the GS II (i777 not skyrocket, the skyrocket will be only slightly less of a ghost town than here) is teasing you with so many ROM choices it will burn a hole in your SD card.

The funny thing is Ive got all the bugs worked out of my Thrill. The thing has ZERO issues for me. I cant think of a single reason not to recommend the Thrill. I could care less about a selection of Roms. Most are just re-themes of the same..exact..thing. All I need is one solid rom and Im golden. That was the thing I LOVED about my Aria. For the longest time there were only 2-3 roms available for it but they were all rock solid and offered everything you could get out of a rom. We had ONE kernel available to us, but it worked flawlessly, so we didnt need anymore kernels. Move along to the Captivate and while I had 200,000 roms to choose from none of them felt finished, half of them were the same rom I had just flashed with a different battery icon, and they all had issues. Even CM7 for the Captivate never felt as solid as it did on my Aria. I never ended up being happy with my Captivate even though it was the "superior "phone to my Aria.
The Thrill is a solid phone. It had a lot of issues upon release and a LOT of people didnt stick around because of that. Gingerbread is here, and from what ive been hearing its already made the Thrill into even more of a beast and its only a pre-release leak (unfortunately I dont have a Windows machine so I cant flash the baseband to even try it ). And with the ICS source released we will have ICS fairly quickly. Gingerbread was a tough port due to ZERO Omap4 devices running it (it wasnt just the Thrill) so we had to try to start from scratch, but the first ICS device has almost the exact CPU (higher clockspeed and better imaging capabilities) and the GPU IS the same. That alone will kickstart development of ICS as we can port ICS rather than try to build it from scratch.
But enough of my ranting Im going to sleep!

O noooo its about to be a cat fight ( Raaaaawwwwrrrrr ) lmao
Thinking about buying a new og droid from amazon. Im downgrading from my Bionic as its bootloader locked and can't stand not having soap. I've had the DROID incredible and battery was horrible no matter what I did, had the fascinate, charge, and now am looking to stick to my android roots until my upgrade in november. So should I do it?
Honestly, I was thinking about doing it myself a while back. Don't know about the new ones but the OG Droid as I remember was very responsive to overclocking and ran great. I loved mine. Thing felt like a tank. Only thing to consider is CM will be dropping support for the OG Droid with CM9. Droids are dirt cheap and if you're good with fixing gadgets, you can get one with a broken digitizer for next to nothing.
I just recently fullfilled my 2 yr contract and was looking at new phones, but decided to try rooting and using a custom ROM on my OG Droid to get back some speed and functionality. I am no longer planning to fork over $ for a new phone
They're cheap, so the risk is minimal, but imho it is a painful experience running anything higher than Froyo/CM6 on the OG Droid. I know people swear by CM7 (and various scripts like V6, etc), but I have never gotten CM7 or any other GB ROM running smoothly for me.
The problem isn't the speed (I have mine OCed to 1.2ghz), its the memory. 256mb just isn't enough anymore.
so cm6 is the way to go? I have no problem with that. Whats the better setup with cm6 as far as kernel matching with cm6? Would like to hear some setups from anyone using the old school og droid.
Currntly running PE6. 5 on my og droid with the stock kernel which is 1.05Ghz lv. Have used the V6 scripts in past with so so results, am currently using Juwe's Ram Manager with pretty successful results.

Try going even farther back. Android 2.1 XD. I still have the old files sitting on my hard drive.
thanks! keep them coming
Looks like project elite 6.5 for me, unless they have something newer out. Anything else I need to know about project elite? Whats the verdict on it? Its hard to find info on the og droid roms, so much just scattered around.
It's an asop rom built by actngrezy, he has stated is working on a version 7 but nothing on it recently or date. Alot of info on PE roms at Droid Forums.

are you guys kidding me? this device is SO SLOW it's completely unusable. No matter how you tweak it, 256MB is just not enough. The day you go to a 512mb device, you will NEVER be able to return.... seriously
wow and who are and how have you helped the xda community. Try using a device with more than 512mb. I have. If I wanted your dumbass opinion on the d1 specs I would have asked for them. Clearly you have zero reading skills. Go troll somewhere else.
I found a brand new d1 for 100. Should be here today, looking forward to stepping back in time!

Gingerbread roms I'd recommend is Simply Stunning, Liquid, Project Elite, CushZero (as I'm using right now) im getting really good memory. I have been along time Droid user and tried just about every single rom that has been developed for it and finally found one that I can stick too.
If you're going to use Gingerbread, I'd recommend to use v6 supercharger (option 3 or superminfree calculator settings)

I get 8hrs on stock battery heavy use, light - medium usage 10 - 15 hrs

Recently I helped her overclocked it to 1.9 with blitzkrieg 2.1 and she's getting 4200+ on antutu and 3400+ on quadrant
Battery took a hit though but still good enough to last her through 8hrs light - medium usage

Have you tried the 901 update or the eclipse 2.1 rc rom for 901?
Also did you try to overclock?
I'm on eclipse 2.1 rc and overclocked it to 1188 with extended battery and I absolutely love it. I get 17+ hrs on a single charge with heavy usage
With the 901 update it totally fix all the issues I had when on 893
I use to have BSOD every other day and have to pull battery, data drop every few hrs and have to toggle airplane mode to get data back, screen freeze also have to pull battery, losing apps when move to sdcard
But once I did the manual update to 901 the bionic has been great for about a month and fixed all the issues I had mentioned above
I highly recommend doing the 901 update as i see it makes the bionic be the device it should of been
Then I flashed the eclipse 2.1rc rom with safestrap, it improve the responsiveness and battery
Lastly I overclocked it to 1188 and it was amazing with what the bionic can do now how much quicker it respond
Now I really don't mind waiting next year for my upgrade. Till then there will be quadcores galore with hd display and who knows what the intel will bring to the market after seeing what their medfield chip can do and new lithium batteries that's 5-10x better than what's available now.
Hopefully moto/vzw will update it to ics and unlock the bootloader

Recently I helped her overclocked it to 1.9 with blitzkrieg 2.1 and she's getting 4200+ on antutu and 3400+ on quadrant
Battery took a hit though but still good enough to last her through 8hrs light - medium usage

Gingervolt wasn't out yet when I had the revolution. People were still trying to figure out how to make custom boot animations and rom development came to a standstill until LG released gingerbread. I was the most disappointed that more rom developers didn't jump on it with its unlocked bootloader, which was the only reason I bought it.

honestly im about to go with other phone and the lg spectrum is my first choice.it could be laggy but is unlocked. I really started to hate my bionic and i about to throw it against the floor. This phone sucks!!!!
By the way im not blaming, complaining about any dev.Actually i think they are making an excellent work here.

LG revolution also had an unlocked bootloader but rom developers didn't jump on it. We actually got more roms with our locked bootloader than they do with theirs unlocked. Be careful what you wish for because sometimes its not.what you want.

Even though there's only a few roms for lg revolution at that time " homeless, revolt, decrap " but it's all good roms like the bionic there's only few roms also yet all still good.
Now with 901 there's only 1 true 901rom which is the eclipse 2.1rc and 3 other compatibles like the eclipse 2.0, liberty 2.0, and ics beta
My friends have the htc thunderbolt and they have many roms but only few is stable most are nightly builts and betas so you gotta stay updated and keep flashing
Coming from LG revolution which have very limited devs I learned as long as there's still support on the phone they can find ways to make the phone better and from what I know some of the devs there working on porting cm7/9 also
There will always have new phones that cause devs to jump ship but as long as the phone still have 1-10 devs remain they'll keep working on it
I think once ics comes out to bionic most dev will jump back in just like the lg revolution when gingerbread came out there's more activity there

Yes, that is what we can expect so I made a joke out of it before someone did it seriously. I'm not switching my bionic anytime soon.

I agree. I was kind of making fun of how every time a new phone is announced, we get these types of posts. Since things are slow, I decided to insert some humor into our community.
I believe things will pick up when ics comes around. I dont really have any issues with my phone so I'm able to be patient.

For me, using stock is foreign. It just seems so un-android to me. But I've been rooting phones for 2 years now so rooting an android is second nature for me. Even if I'm not rommed up, I still need to root if only to get rid of bloatware. I support them putting bloatware on the phones, I just dont support them making it so you can't remove the bloatware without rooting. PCs have been putting bloat on for years but they let you remove it if you dont want it. I'm just wondering how many android users are stuck with let's golf on there phone just to never play it.

Example fail. Lets Golf is the only piece of bloat you can uninstall without root.
Okay I just got a free Revo and currently have a Droid X. I want to use the Revo but the stock setup sucks, I want to root and get a stable/functional Rom on here. What Rom would that be? Also would I bide able to hack to use WiFi teather?
Thanks
There is really only one custom ROM for the Revo, called Broken Out. I'm using version 1.1, but there is a version 2 available. There seems to be mixed results with all versions for users. I think it works well of you don't overclock it and get things how you want then, then allow a few days for the system to kind of sort itself out. After that I recommend just leaving it alone and not doing constant tweaking. The Revo just doesn't like a lot of change for some reason. Also, for best performance and stability, try to leave about a gig of memory free and 100 mb of ram free by not having too many apps set up to constantly run. And yes, you can do wifi tethering. I haven't used it lately, but have used foxfi. It worked fine, but I believe they've changed it so that the free version only works for short intervals at a time now. I imagine there are better alternatives.
Thanks for the quick response, do you think it's worth switching from a RD.
I'm not sure I've come across that term. What's an RD?

Well, if you're really into customization, probably not. On the other hand, if 4g speeds are important to you, then yes. Also, though I don't know how much memory the DX has or how much you need, the Revo's 16 gigs of storage is a nice element as well.
I owned a DX and its a good phone no costomisability cuz of locked BL but the revo has a little more ram and a lot more memory that can be used for everything not just apps like the DX so yea there both pretty lacking in the SW development area but yea good switch at least my bro thinks so...

My phone is frustratingly slow after the update. I've tried some of the ROMS that were built for it but those are bad as well. Is it just me or is everyone's phone this slow? Sometimes it'll take like 5 seconds to open an app or go from the lock screen to an app. Im super bummed because I really like'd how well the phone ran with ICS.

I had the exact same experience. With ICS it was pretty smooth, after the OTA to JB it sucked, bad. I tried a handful of roms, none that seemed that great. Until I came across the liquidsmooth one here. Thats what Im running now, no complaints at all. Fast, responsive, super customizable. Give it a look if you havent already.
Agree with voodoodaddy I had the same issue and liquid smooth 2.4 is so far the fastest, most stable, full functioning ROM out there. Just remember to install it on ROM slot 3
Is the phone running at 1.2 by default? If so you might want to drop it down to 1.0 and try it for a while

Are you talking about the clock speed? It's completely stock (w/root) I haven't screwed with any hardware settings at all.
Even LTE is slow. Im on YouTube right now and it's buffering ever 20 second or so.
My bionic is also frustratingly slow. The stock ROM does an incredibly terrible job of managing background tasks and memory usage. I would switch roms but I have all these motorola accessories that typically don't work on anything but a stock rom. It's really awful. Unless some real changes are made this will be my last Motorola device. Samsung has really stepped up their game and I see no reason to go with someone else.

The reason I asked was because in certain phones when the ota ICS they bumped up the click speed to 1.2. I found on mine the phone couldn't handle that bump and it suffered similar to what your describing until I took it back down to 1.0
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
Y'all can also try doing a FDR (factory data reset). Been known to help with some after an upgrade. You won't lose root.
Before I updated to JB I FXZ'd to stock ICS. So I would imagine that would kick me back down to 1.0 no?
As I typed my response I realized I should just check rather then ask...so I DL'd no frills and sure enough it was at 1.2. So I bumped it back to 1.0. We'll see what happens.
Thanks
Let us know, since ICS I've been running under clocked and using CPU Sleeper. Been getting great battery life and no problems
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
I am having the same problems, apps slow to load, serious lag when typing, etc... I just checked and I am running at 1 GHz too. Battery life went from 10 hours on ICS to 7 on JB. I recently rooted but I was having these issues when everything was all stock.
How long have you had your Bionic? This is about the time the batteries starts dying and that can cause problems too
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
So after making the change to 1.0 for a few days that appears to have been my problem. Phone is running much better.
