[Q] 3 Button Fix HELP - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I started with a KB2 on 2.2 I flashed it back to 2.1 JF6 with Odin and I ordered a JIG which helped me get out of a brick situation. I installed CWM and I got into recovery but the screen does not say anything about installing from ZIP It just has the 4 choices reset, reinstall and so on...
There is so much information out there it is hard to know what to do. I would like to start flashing ROMs but I think I missed a step or something so before I go any further I have tried all the button combos and I cannot get into recovery and the times that I did before said nothing about installing anything from a zip.
PLEASE ADVISE
Aloha..MJ

Sounds like 3e recovery. You will need to bypass signature verification...
You might be better off just flashing a different kernel to get cwm and flash from there..
Use Odin or heimdall to flash a different kernel that has cwm

sounds like he is seeing the stock recovery. if he is indeed on 2.1, then its 2e recovery. reinstall packages, the phone will reboot into recovery, then reinstall packages again, you will be kicked over to CWM

woops. I looked over the part that said he flashed jf6. Excuse me. Sorry
Yes reinstall twice, like he said

Can't boot after CM6.1B3?

I can't seem to get my phone to boot at all with any ROM that's not in an odin package.
I installed CM6.1 on my captivate and it seems like whenever i try to flash any other ROM through clockwork, the phone freezes at the bootanimation and logcat spews out a loop of "I/dumpstate" over and over. i can't seem to get it to bot, and this is with any kernel (OC or not)
When flashed back to CM though, even through clockwork, it boots again, no problems. any clues guys?
Have you tried flashing back to stock and then flashing another rom with CWM?
yeah, i flashed JF6 and JI6 one click but no luck at all. i don't know what the problem could be.
Do you have the most current update.zip from CWM?

I was using the one from tayatuma's ROM, any chance you guys could upload a newer one for me?
I'm also trying to repartition with the 512 PIT and seeing if that'll help.
On my phone right now and can't upload attachments, but when I get home, I'll post the update.zip from P8 that I'm using now.

thanks man, I found one in Darkyy's thread though. I'mgonna try to wipe it as clear as possible to try and cover all bases.

rename this to update.zip
place on internal sd card
reboot into recovery
press reinstall packages
then reinstall packages again. should work for you.
Well since you only have 3 posts I think ill wait to see if anyone else chimes in...don't want to do anything to my phone that would brick it

Better safe than sorry, I just started contributing after quite some time now so I do not blame you one bit.
However...
That link is the CWM recovery for 2e bootloaders.
What ROM are you using?
You can always get ODIN 1.82 and flash an optimized kernel like hardcore's speedmod K9A which already has CWM.
EDIT: haha or you could just ODIN one-click to stock, root, and go CW Rom manager and from there flash recovery. I know that will work 100%, but that link is just a shortcut through all that nonsense.
Just flash clockworkmod recovery.
I had this problem the other day when I was trying to flash a new rom. I tried flashing CWM many times to no avail.
Like one of the previous repliers said, I flashed the speedmod kernel which had CWM already. The kernel can be found here.
Use Odin to flash it. After that, i could boot manually to CWM, but when i tried to boot to it through rom manager i was pushed to the stock recovery. In that case, I simply flashed my rom manually with CWM.
Theres also a good video on this for the i9000 which worked for me:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7xV0yE9ZcA
Hope this helps.

[Q] Help! Broken microUSB port

Hi,
I'm pretty sure the microUSB port on my AT&T Captivate is shot... It will charge using the outlet adapter, but will *not* charge or connect to any of several PCs. I've uninstalled/reinstalled drivers multi times, and another Captivate exactly like it connects just fine (with same cable, same port, etc.) Good news: it's still under warranty. Bad news: it's been rooted and updated with a "Low-designgears" util.
Do I need to revert to stock in order to return for warranty, and is it possible to do that if the phone can't connect to a PC?
Stupid questions probably. Thank you.
I would think that you need to return to stock...you can chance it. But it's up to you.

What firmware are u on? I think there was a cwm flashable stock somewhere...don't know if that would help.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
There is a cwm flashable jh7 but I think it only works from 2.1. Might work with 2.2 but if all else fails format boot in recovery and tell at&t your phone said there was an update and it failed. I would probably format system, cache, and data too just so there isn't any evidence of your wrong doing. Unlikely it would ever find its way back to you though. Has worked for a lot of people.
It should hard brick your phone though

Firmware is 2.2. Thanks for the help. I'll look for that cwm flashable, and consider my options. Thanks.

1. As long as it's rooted he can replace 3e recovery, install cwm, and flash that from 2.2.
2. Formatting does not hard brick. Why would there be an option that would completely **** your phone? Like a self destruct button that could accidentally be pressed if you don't know what you're doing. Makes no sense.

Sorry, back again guys...
I've got cwm installed but I can't find a way to get past 3e recovery. I tried to flash cwm recovery from rom mgr - and it says current recover is cwm 2.5.1.2 - but going into recovery mode still shows 3e (don't know what cwm recovery should look like). Flashing any rom (tried a couple customs too) dies with sig verification error.
been searching for a few hours on replacing 3e, but everything i run across requires ability to connect with the pc.
any idea how i can replace 3e recovery without ability to connect via usb?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
The second method does not require a pc. Download the fix files with your phone, then download a file explorer from the market that has root access, root explorer, file expert, astro file manager to name a couple. Paste in the file reboot into recovery, reinstall packages twice and that will boot you into cwm, which its green with more options...
brick the phone n say kies ****ed it up. that worked for me.
Samsung captivate
glitch kernel

Android Recovery issue

I've searched everywhere but can't seem to find an answer to this as it seems no one else has the issue. For starters this only happens when I don't have a custom kernel with cwm installed so maybe that's the problem but I want to clarify this for myself. When I'm in a stock froyo rom without cwm installed and go into recovery mode using the button combo I get into android recovery 2e. And once I'm.in that I can highlight different options but I can not select anything at all! Its as if the power button doesn't work at all. OK so fine lets pull battery out n reboot. When I try that, it boots back into recovery. Or if I do the button combo to go into download mode I can do that. But that's all I can get the phone to do. If I'm on stock gingerbread with 3e recovery and go into recovery I can select things at least but not in 2e. And the only way I can get cwm to replace android recovery is with a custom kernel installed. Cwm works fine. Any help or anything would be appreciated.
No one have any ideas?
?? Maybe Odin back to Eclair 2.1, then use Kies to update to the official Froyo 2.2
Idk, just suggesting that may fix whatever the issue is...
There r links below my signature...

[Q] Messed up installing CM7.1

I had a stock I9000 with 2.3.4 XXJVQ. I rooted it with CF-ROOT 3.7 using these instructions: androidadvices.com/root-samsung-galaxy-gt-i9000-android-234-xxjvq-firmware/3/ and CF-Root-XX_UNK_JVQ-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar and Odin3 v1.7 from the provided archive.
These worked all right and it also installed CWM 2.0
Then I downloaded CM7.1 stable from here: cyanogenmod.com/devices/samsung-galaxy-s and followed the instructions here to install: wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide#Method_via_Recovery
I wiped the data, wiped the cache and then selected "Install zip from sdcard" and then I choose the CM7.1 zip file and after a few seconds the phone entered a reboot cycle. For a moment the Cyanomodgen logo and the Samsung logo appeared, then a few lines of text, and then it rebooted and did the same.
I've waited about 10 minutes and nothing changed, and then proceeded to install CF-ROOT again via Odin thinking that it would solve it and revert back to what I had. Boy, was I wrong! Now it just hangs on the Samsung logo screen.
The phone still enters Download mode, so from what I've read it's recoverable, but I'm kinda scared to try anything else without knowing for sure that it would work because I don't want to brick it harder.
Since I'm a new user, the forum won't let me link properly. Sorry.
Any advice? Thanks.

Can you get 3 button recovery again? If you can just reflash cm7
Instead of reflashing the kernel through Odin you should have taken out the battery. Then 3 button comboed back into recovery and reflashed cm7
If you can't get into recovery again reflash a stock rom with odin.. then a kernel then has cwm recovery.. reboot into recovery mode then flash cm7.. and if you get the same boot loop as before pull the battery, 3 button into recovery and flash cm7 again.. then you will be good to go

First time I entered CWM using the CWM app and selecting "reboot into CWM". Is there another combo besides home+vol down+power for dl mode?
Could you recomend a good stock ROM?
Thanks

volume up, home and power will give you recovery when your phone is turned off..
Any stock gingerbread will do when trying to go to cm7
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
The first time you flash CM7, you might need to flash it twice. AKA
1) Flash once
2) Reboot. Now you are stuck in bootloop.
3) Pull battery. Go into recovery mode again
4) Flash cm7 again
5) Should boot normally now.
It's a common occurrence.
Oops beat me to it
It doesn't go into recovery anymore (home+vol up+power). I'll try to flash a stock ROM with Odin and see how it goes.
Edit1:
For people having this problem. I've flashed using the ROM and instructions here:
androidadvices.com/update-samsung-galaxy-i9000-official-gingerbread-235-xfjva-firmware/2/
This is 2.3.5 XXJVT
Edit2:
I've went to this thread:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
and got the proper CF-ROOT for XXJVT and flashed it with Odin3 v1.7
Edit3:
I've installed CM7.1 using the instructions linked in the first post and everything worked out fine. Thanks everybody.
