Hey, I'm thinking of buying this phone, but does anybody know if its likely to get the android 4.0 update? Is it capable of it?
Thanks

Let me put it this way.
We're waiting for 2.3 since July.
By the time we get it there will be probably 5.
Shame because the hardware its good.

To be fair, with same specs and price, I'd go for Nexus S. Can't see your country but roam the android threads, MIUI and CM threads to see what's good for your money with great dev support and ROM variations.
I'm giving you my 2 cents for that.

if you're expecting some Ice Cream in this device, forget it
it'll be already melted when it releashed by the way
The hardware is good. Yes we are dissapointed by the proper LG 2.3 firmware they promise to release but you can use CM7 as an alternative - IMO CM7 is much better.
Well if you just think only and only about ICS then go for nexus s.
But just think aside for a while.... and here you go
- With optimus black you get a great looking phone with slim and sexy built. Compared it. With thick nexus s and you will see the difference.
- with optimus black you get the best and the brightest display in the world. I know a new Nokia device is going to have 1000nits brightness but its a 3. 5" device... and the smaller the screen size its easy to bright it up. But for a 4" display our optimus black is still the best and brightest display in world.
- with optimus black you also get memory card facility... especially useful if you need to exchange card with friends on occasions. And tremendously tremendously helpful when you get out on a tour... just Leo two three 8 gb cards and you can shoot as many photos as you wish record as many videos as you wish. While with nexus s you will have to rush to a cyber cafe to empty your internal memory into a pen drive or dvd.
... so in short in my honest opinion you stocks buy optimus black. Trust me with cyanogen mod and perhaps with help of any developer around here we will surely get ICS. sooner or later. It debt affect tbe use power of the phone to that extent as you think. Consider this again mate.
Thanks everyone, I think I will go for this phone as I like the look of it. I have cyanogen on my current phone (galaxy 5, £50 phone) and that's made 2.3 available, so 4.0 should be able to go on the black.
Does this phone have any specific developer working on cyanogen?
If not, I know one I could request to try to do cyanogen for this phone?
Sent from my GT-I5500 using Tapatalk
There is Cyanogen mod in progress already for OB. Nearly done by the sound of out.

Dont buy it! You will regret it, the chances of getting ICS are none. I really regret not buying the nexus s and i wouldnt have bought this one in june if i'd knew it wouldnt have gingerbread until 2012, cause lets face it, we wont get gingerbread this year, not a chance. I even recommend you to get an SE xperia Arc as they are cheaper now, at least in sweden, an SE is nowadays much better with updates. Still nexus s is the best alternative.
Sent from my LG-P970 using XDA App
And the cyanogenmod is far from complete. Read the thread about it, dont trust those recommending this phone, they just dont want to admit to themselves that it was a bad purchase, you know, nobody wants to drink alone.

dont buy lg any more!!pls beg u!!m stuck with froyo from aprill knowing that we will get gingerbread soon!!and even now its not ready !!get sony ericsson cuz thier customer service is extremely good now a days!!no more lg for me!!regretting!!
I agree with that the customer service isn't good with LG but... hey ! We have a good hardware and you are talking like if froyo is the worth thing ever !! We are lucky to have some development and Cyanogen let us have Gingerbread and maybe later ICS.

Yeah, it looks a good phone. I mean, they managed to get gingerbread to my current phone which I thought was a miracle (has very little ram) so this should be able to get ics one way or another
But its in consideration anyway
Thanks for the comments so far, and I welcome more opinions to this phone

I don't recommend it, that's why I sold my Optimus Black. I had a problem with my phones and in all firmwares I tried I encountered a lot of annoying bugs, like battery drain, GSM/3G problems, wifi couldn't connect to an enterprise signal... all the uses I'd give to an smartphone were gone with it, so thats why I sold it.
Really, I was happier with my old Iphone 2G. It had some crappy features, but did all the things I wanted.
My recommendation: buy another device, specially an SonyEricsson or HTC. They are serious brands.
Of if you like to have Ice Cream Sandwich for sure and quick, but a Nexus device.

I have around $250 to spend on a used phone. Please don't suggest any upcoming phones or that I should wait, only what's listed in the poll. I'm looking for something that wont be too ancient by next year, software and hardware wise. Basically an all around best phone . Software upgrading is pretty important as well as hardware. If there is something not up there, that you feel needs to be suggested, for my price range please tell me Thanks in advance!
The ZTE Blade (or Orange San Francisco as its known in the uk) looks a fairly decent spec to say its a cheap phone. Not sure about updates though.

Go to marketplace section and get one of the hot deals found there!
If you are lucky you can get even a Tmobile HD2 for that cash
I would choose an HTC definetly
a HTC Desire, hands down.. I my opinion its better then SHS (have used it for 3 days, returned it).. and now cant live without out it!
I think you should look at phones rom potential before you choose. Make sure your phone is well supported and with the stuff you like. Secondly make sure your phone has a quality build. HTC as other people have said makes great phones. Samsung makes great hardware but make sure you flash any Samsung product you get with a rom or you'll hate the phone. For instance I didn't care much for my captivate until I flashed it. It was buggy and poorly supported. New rom made it rock solid. Thanks XDA

If you can find an unlocked HD2, you can use it on AT&T, but only on edge speeds. Tons of support for the HD2, but the X10 is doing pretty well on getting an Android 2.2 build.
I have an X10 running XFree Beta 2.2 it is quite decent but still lacking. Or so I think it is lacking. It is my first android device (other then idroid on my iphone 3g). I got it cause it was free and seemed like a good choice at the time. The X10 devs have been pretty quick to patch and update as of late. But I have only had the phone for ~2 months. I am looking to buy a captivate so I can compare. Till then you'll have to take this with a grain of salt. It seems like there are more devs for the captivate.

After 14+ long months, I am finally leaving the Evo and Android for good. I gave it two shots (G1 and Evo), and both times it was underwhelming. I actually preferred the experience I had with the G1 than I did with the Evo.
I'll be picking up my iPhone tomorrow morning once I get out of class.

You guys are insane someone can't say they're leaving for an iphone because they're automatically flamed and obviously stupid. I like android but I prefer ios. Yet I'm still here. Android just seems to be all over the place and all unorganized right now. It seems like I get a new phone and the week after that a new much better phone is released and our is outdated. There's also the issue where some apps don't work on some phones because of the hardware or some other bull excuse like they did with netflix. We get dumbed down apps all the time. Like they don't even care about us android users. I still love android I just wish it was better.

Your comparing software to hardware. Android ****s on ios? Is that what you mean?
If I had to weigh in I would say that neither is better, tho ios even tho stole the notification system, implemented it better then android. That's neither here nor there. I say they each offer a different user experience, yes you can get great battery life, after an android phone gets rooted and modified. Tho I have yet to be able to watch looped video on my evo for 7 hours straight...
I think the main difference is the app store, android users are cheap as ****. They will use warez, they will not donate(I'm speaking generally). So better support and better apps make their way to ios first. Yes we have the same apps on android but android fragmented system is ****ed up. I love android, but reguardless how you look at it. They are different. Really don't think people should get all pissy about it. Crazy how some people act towards another human just because they like a different phone. I think our priorities are messed up.

Rolling another green android as we speak.
I am definitely addicted to Android since discovering MIUI.us 2.2.3. Take the best features of IOS, add to it the best features of Android, throw in a liberal dose of nuance, style and flair and you have the perfect ROM.
I never thought i'd be saying this but it really is an order of magnitude better than Cyanogenmod. The infamous Android lag is all but gone! The N1 touchscreen wonks..gone! It's like i died and woke up in smartphone heaven. Most of the apps i used to use i don't need any more. Decent File Browser? Check. Decent Browser? Check. Decent SMS/Dialer/Alarm? Check!
What i don't need in a ROM are a hundred features that i have to turn off because i don't use them. What i do need in a ROM are core features that just work well. Consider me converted!
I seriously wouldn't trade my two year old phone for anything on the market right now, not even if it were free. Not a chance!
Wich phone you own?

I'm hooked on IceCremeSandwich's with no-sense!
pure curiosity
first, i have the android phone, then switch to iOS then at now, android again feeling to be more comfy with android (though iOS still rocks on perf and display)
but guess, loving now android coz to put my dev-inside
MIUI.us is working out so well for me. I have apps that never worked well on CM7 that are working perfectly now. The famous N1 touchscreen wonk has disappeared completely, (which is a miracle in itself), and not only are the stock apps better than AOSP, (Gallery, you know i'm talking about you), but they're better than the usual replacements. (Sorry, Quickpic).
A big plus is a beautiful U.I that is consistent throughout the software and on par with IOS. It's like somebody read my mind and made a bespoke ROM for me! It's all the little touches too. The nice animations, the way the music fades out when you pause it, (not to mention Lyrics support and a pretty visualisation), options for re-ordering Bookmarks in the Browser, a good Notes app, in built backup for apps, system and theme. It's incredibly fast and smooth too. Without the OC i had in CM7 it actually performs better!
Pics for the uninitiated:
How about a stock Data usage app, or a Firewall:
How good is that?
I love my android phone...
Still my first (galaxy mini), but i hope my next one will be better...
Hey all.
Basically i just want to hear all your thoughts on your current devices, and what you think of the next device in that product family.
My thoughts.
My first android device was the Motorola defy which really sold android for me, the fact i could treat a phone horribly by accident and it not care was a really solid selling point. The developer community for it was really quite strong too, it even receiving CM10 before my current S2.
The original transformer isn't the prettiest, lightest and fastest tablet anymore (not that it was ever lightest SO MUCH GLASS) but it was and is my first tablet and still works amazingly today. Good job Asus.
My current phone is the Samsung Galaxy S 2 which i bought outright after everyone that had one giving raving reviews and a quick view of the forum showed a very active community. Little did i know the issues the developers faced to get the aosp roms working properly, it is not pretty and it is entirely the fault of Samsung and their hardware partners (I am looking at you, yamaha). I know this and love the developers for supporting my S2 so well, especially codeworkx whom has been moving devices lately.
I love the idea of getting the S3, but i would only be going for the larger screen and if all i want is the larger screen why not go even larger and get the Note 2? Especially after its drop test video. It is a tank of a phone.
The One X+ Kind of interests me with unlocked bootloaders etc. But the fact i have to flash the kernel separately to the ROM every time (or at least that is my understanding) would really annoy me.
After the defy i would rush to a unlocked bootloader on a Motorola. That and screen size were the only issues i had with my defy.
But my current plan runs out in December which is only a few months away and i would love some ideas on devices coming into Christmas season.
Currently i am thinking Note 2, but i don't want to have half baked aosp roms because of hardware support. Ideas?
And yes doing a BYO 6 month plan with my local carrier is an option.
How bout this one?

I have the SGSIII and the One X. In the case of the One X (not the One X+ but it's basically a refresh of the One X) yes, you do have to extract and flash the boot.img via your pc using fastboot and the flash the modules via recovery...not as bad as it sounds. It's a great phone.
The SGSIII not only has a bigger screen but a higher resolution than the SGSII. There are many ROMs for it and in the case of the US variants I've flashed ROMs made for the AT&T variant on my T-Mobile one. (The international version also has great development.)

Thanks Babydoll one of my friends has the one x which i rooted/cm10ed for him the other day, it was an interesting look into HTC custom roms and i must say it is not overly difficult or anything. Hi, I really love this tablet lineup alot. I have the tf300t and it has alot of Developer Support. I love this brand specifically because it allows me to type up school related documents when I need to and has an awesome battery life. I wanted to get the TF701, but it seems completely empty on the developer support. Why is this? Is it a crappy tablet? Does no one care about this tablet anymore?
If this isn't a suggested tablet, what is a suggested one that has a keyboard with it?

Hey man, I seriously am so appreciative for all you work man. I used CROMI-X all the time on my tf300t. Your Rom and the AOSP roms motivated me to stay with the tf300t. You have done an awesome job and I appreciate all your time with your ROMS.
I guess I have gotten spoiled with having the opportunity of tasting all the different Roms Available for devices like the the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S4 and the TF300t.
I was just curious if the lack of developers on this tablet made me think there was a serious issue with the tablet.
Now doing some research, even the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet doesn't have much developer support either even after being so popular.

I agree, that TF701 performs pretty darn well with the stock rom. While the TF700 begged for custom roms (to solve issues like the need to turn off FSYNC), it took me a lot longer to unlock the device and install the customized sbdags version. His version is awesome, but I agree that the need is not as apparent as it was on previous devices, presumably because the hardware is better.
That being said, it also seems like the user base for the TF701 is not quite there either....
Maybe cause the 701T just came out recently?

I wonder if it might be also because the tegra 3 has been around since the tf300? along with the nexus 7. So they had something to work from. I dont know if that has anything to do with it though.
Stock when rooted is just so good, for me at least. I would hate to lose the productivity apps built into the stock Rom if I change it.

Sbdags is a God, there is no question about it. His efforts and those of the other developers are the reasons Android is so great.
I wonder if the custom rooms have this feature present in the stock Rom where I could just bring up floating apps by just clicking the button on the left.
P.S. Don't know why the attached screenshot is blurry. It is clear when viewed through the gallery.

CROMi-X has all of those: Splendid, Pop-up apps, dock works perfectly......
There have been PAC nighties for a while. I just came across them by checking their site. Don't know why there's no thread. It's pretty good.
