Cornonal Mass Ejection / Northern lights - Off-topic

Did anybody get a good view of the Northern lights/Cornonal Mass Ejection last night? I know a lot of users on this site are outside of the U.S. was this visible anywhere else? I am so disappointed I missed it. If anybody captured some good photos feel free to share here!

It it was a biggie, i'd imagine anybody north of the Arctic Circle got a great show! It's certainly not so common south of that so to see a good display across most of North America is rare indeed.
There's a couple of great examples in Jaszek's Time-Lapse thread if you haven't seen them. Absolutely breathtaking stuff! Once my dream of moving to the Alaskan wilderness comes true i'll be seeing these regularly of course!

Nice! I was up just missed it, they should have ran a public broadcast message across the tv at the time so everybody new about it

Man, I didn't know anything about it. If I knew I'd go to my friends roof and try to shoot it. But probably wasn't seen in NYC anyway. lol.

It's a big enough concern for NASA to park satellites in the Lagrangian point between us and the sun:
SOHO
When one of these is headed towards earth, satellites in orbit are often turned around to protect the more delicate instruments. The effect on the earths magnetosphere can be likened to it being hit by a huge boxing glove!
Funny enough, one of these CME's took out the power all along the US Eastern seaboard one year. 9 months later hospitals up and down country recorded a massive increase of mothers giving birth.
Nice to know that people can find something to do when their televisions don't work!

Good news everyone!
"Spaceport Sweden launches its first space tourism experience:
Northern Light Flights - an exclusive way to view the magical northern lights
Spaceport Sweden has collaborated with the ICEHOTEL, Kiruna Airport and Scandinavian Airlink to launch an exclusive space tourism experience that will allow clients to get an even closer look at the magical and mythical northern lights.
”Space tourism is no longer a dream but a new industry being developed here and now. At Spaceport Sweden our mission is to provide space related experiences for all; on the ground, in the air and in time to space and we are very excited to now launch our first product. The Northern Light Flights offers our customers an exclusive experience to get closer to and view this natural space phenomenon of the northern lights from a front row seat”, says Karin Nilsdotter, CEO at Spaceport Sweden.
The Northern Light Flight experience starts at ICEHOTEL with a short presentation about the northern lights and a transfer to Spaceport Sweden where an airplane with seats for nine passengers each with a window will take clients above the clouds. The flight will last approximately 1 hour.
The premier flight takes place on the 15th January 2012 and there will then be three more flights on the 5th, 12th and 19th of February. The flights can be booked via icehotel.com as of 19th of October 2011. There are three types of package deals to choose between: a standard, deluxe and a charter package deal that is bookable all days between 1st of January and 15th of March 2012.
The Kiruna region is situated within the aurora zone and has among the best prerequisites in the world to see the northern lights. There are several climate zones in the region that together with good weather conditions increase the chances of seeing the northern lights. The solar activity, which causes the northern lights, peaks every 11 years, so the aurora borealis tends to be more frequent and intense at these times. Additionally, the years following a peak see increased northern lights activity - this winter, we are now reaching the peak and the next two winters are expected to be very active and exciting. "
The price will be around 4000 NOK (norwegian kroner) which is about $700 (!)
Sources: Spaceport Sweden, NRK (Google Translated)

I want to see it from above! Orbiting the Earth in a Space-Hotel is where it's at my friend.

I guess you'll have to wait a couple of years before you can do that My guess is between 2020 - 2030.

National championship here we come WHOOOOO
Tarheels all the way. We have been up and down this season but things are looking up under Davis. I hate Florida, so I was upset Tech lost...plus being from Texas I would prefer a Texas team be in the BCS championship.
Ya, i feel you. it sucked when we lost that game earllier this season and dropped from number one. We have a great team this year i would have loved to see them go undefeated.

College and NFL fan here. I'm a native Coloradoan so I'm a Broncos, Avs, Nuggets and Rockies fan.
Graduated from CSU (Colorado State Univ) and still go to Rammies home games in Fort Collins.....definitely not a powerhouse like OU, Texas and company but we've got some tough conference teams with Utah and BYU now. Hopefully the program will keep progressing and moving forward.
Anyhow, I always watch the Big 12, 10, SEC and ACC games and have followed the BCS mess with OU, Texas and TTU this year. Don't know who should go to the championship game but I think OU and Texas are better teams than TTU as of today. Too bad OU and Texas couldn't play for the Big 12...whoever plays Mizzou will likely win by a good margin.
Good luck to your Sooners in the BCS!
Big win for my Broncos on the road against the NY Jets...plus San Diego lost so we're looking good in the weak AFC West.

I can't agree with soccer being better, they are both physically exhausting. I played both throughout school, soccer more. But, i can totally agree that soccer can wear you down. Running up and down that damn field game after game always hurt, especially in the cold. But it was worth it all for the MVP trophy!
Well well looks like OK is number 2. Hopefully your boys can beat Mizz and go against Alabama for the championship.

i've played both and i wouldn't say either is better..... they both have there "advantages" and "disadvantages" (soccer and football)
i will have to say though that i think the hardest sport out there is wrestling by far....
Try cutting 30 to 40 pounds in two or three weeks to get down to 7 percent body fat (the lowest allowed) and then be able to even stand up..... much less wrestle someone the same strength as you, i breaks down to technique and who wants to get there hand raised in the end more..... its a really mental sport, its all about who will break first
Wrestling is not the hardest sport out there, at least for me. I've been learning wushu in Beijing for 5 years and I must say that wushu kung fu is one of the hardest sport. Yeah i know wushu involves wrestling but the forms comprise basic movements are stances, kicks, punches, balances, jumps, sweeps and throws. You could be a bodybuilder, weight over 700 pounds and you will see yourself on the ground trying to beat someone who knows kung fu..
Dude that play Bradford did was one of those hold your breath and hope he isn't dead...LOL. At least when they chocked against Boise St. it was one of the best games in college football.

colligiant wrestling is the same way, that why i like it. I like sports that require more than just steroids to be a champ at. Obviously i'm not say lifting or getting big are a bad thing, i still like football obviously, but its refreshing to have sports where its not JUST about how hard you can hit someone but about what you know and how good your technique is.
you can put someone twice as strong as someone with good technique, and in wrestling the person with better technique will win everytime.

Weather

What is it about people and weather? I work on a reception desk so during inclement weather i have to endure a thousand comments a day about how 'nasty' it is.
I LIKE the rain. I LIKE gale force winds. I LIKE thunder storms and great displays of lightning. I LIKE being out in the snow when we get blizzards.
Do people think they'll disolve if they get a little wet? Will they get blown around like an empty crisp packet if the wind picks up a little?
Now i'm moaning which makes me no better than the people i hate for moaning!

I like sunshine and nice white beaches with clear blue ocean water.
Unfortunately I'm on a friggin mountain with NO WATER around.
But I can have sunshine, rain, sleet, hail, and then blizzard like conditions all within the same hour here.
I don't hate the weather... I just wait 15 minutes for it to change again

When your in England, the weather is rain.
End of.
Here's the Malaysian take on weather. If the sky is clear, the weather is good. If it's raining, the weather is good.
Here are exceptions if it's raining:
1. You are outdoors (get wet)
2. You're having an outdoor event (everybody get wet)
3. You are hanging your clothes out to dry (yes, we do that instead of having an expensive dryer)
4. You are in a flooded area (not that it matters anyway)
5. You are drowning (not that it matters anyway)
Here are the exceptions if it's sunny:
1. You are outdoors (too hot!)
2. You are having an outdoor event (everybody too hot!)
3. You are being hung out to dry (yes, they do that to you sometimes. Malaysian Standard Time is actually TOM+2, TOM being Time Of Meeting)
4. You are in a flooded area (time to go home to clean up the mess)
5. You are downing (now it's hot and you are drowning)
Unfortunately I'm on a friggin mountain with NO WATER around.
I love your sense of humor and frame of mind, sakai4eva. You're right: it's unlikely I would care if it were raining if I was in the middle of drowing.
Tell you one thing, tho... I'd far rather take my chances with storms than with earthquakes, in light of what places like California, New Zealand, and other fault areas can be like when bad stuff happens there.

Hmm... we (Malaysia) are advertised as the country without earthquakes, although the probability that the building you are in is defective is almost guaranteed. Our stadiums collapse, the parliament leaks when there's rain, pedestrian bridges cost a few thousand bucks a meter, etc.
Of course, we build a billion ringgit palace for our monarch. Just because we can.

+1 on this.....
Unfortunatly I also have to deal with the general public on a day to day basis.
The one I hate most is;
"Have you seen the weather today?"
To which I have two replys that I would love to throw at them.....
"No, due to the fact that I travel to work through a system of instant matter transportation there is no need for me to set foot outside, therefore I have not seen todays weather. Kindly enlighten me as to the current temperature and amount of precipitation. Also feel free to offer your expert opinion on how long you think it will last and how it is affected by global warming..."
Or...
"Unless you think that I live in my place of work, then you should be aware that I have been forced to leave my house this morning and travel here to listen to you spout this crap.... Therefore, yes I am aware of the current weather conditions and have no interest in discussing them. Please take your ill informed opinions and meteriological analysis and shove them up your ass."
Sadly, I have bills to pay and have no choice but to nod, smile politely etc etc...

Rioting

We have a wee bit of rioting in Belfast this evening. There's a parade on somewhere or other. Got me thinking about rioting in general. We get a lot of it here. LAst summer was particularly bad with a lot of rioting around the city and around NI in general. this is a video from last year at Ardoyne. It doesn't kick of right away but it gets a bit out of hand. This one is quite tame. Afterwards a policewoman was seriously inured when a rioter through some concrete on her.
Belfast and Vancouver may be on different continents but they have the perennial riots in common. It's only 0.1% of each population though, while the rest look on thinking 'what a bunch of asshats'
It'll all change given, oh i don't know....300 years? Shame we won't be around to enjoy the peace!

good heavens! ur from belfast as well! the riots last summer was madness. thank god most of it was around Derry and North Belfast! just when you think people are matured enough to put the past behind them and move on! no wonder most of NI is a dump...lol
i was however stuck in the middle of the riots last year (if i remember right) along the lower windsor avenue when the polish supporters clashed with the local ones. 'twas a bloody affair i tell you. i actually pity the coppers in NI. poor guys are hated by both sides and have been putting up with sectarian s**t for too many decades now
If citizens were allowed to carry firearms it would pretty much stop the rioting. People are less inclined to do something that may get them killed....

I think it was summer of 2010 when there was that G20 riot in Toronto, then a few days ago the riot in Vancouver. rioting is one thing but the assassination in the antrim base, the cold blooded murder of the police officer in craigavon and the recent ones as well have taken things just a bit too far. what do they hope to achieve. yes i do know they are fighting for a cause, but blood baths isnt the answer.
It has really kicked off the last two nights with up to 500 on Monday night rioting and 700 last night. A photographer was shot in the leg last night, you can read the article here.
Shots have been fired by both sides of the community and there is very little the police can do without being heavy handed. This is putting such a negative slant on Northern Ireland which is a fantastic little country.
Let's face it, humans don't need a reason to be violent. They just need an excuse.

That's no big deal. If some idiot wants to keep paying taxes on a new car every 6 months, that's more money for the local government than the price of the tags. Remember that the taxes on the whole vehicle are paid at the time of the vehicle's actual sale, which means right before the vehicle is driven off the lot.
Remember that California has a sales tax rate of 7.75%, so every 6 months, they get to charge $10230.00 in sales tax. When the vehicle gets flipped 6 months later, they get to nail it for sales tax a second time.
Basically, this idiot was paying more than $20000 per year just to drive without plates. The average price of a new car in the US is under $30000, also known as 18 months of driving without plates for stupidface.
Sorry, but this MORON didn't find any loophole. He found a hole to shove money into by the wheelbarrow.

Yeah - absolutely right, unless he leased it, which is says in the article he did.
I don't get the logic behind allowing 6 months to get plates.

Trying to think of a joke about roundabouts and living in a grid system, but having no luck. Guess I just have to agree!

Yes, he leased a "new" (identical) car every 6 month.

MK's grid system makes an excellent rally course (as seen on Road Wars)
I wonder if sales tax is applicable to leases, or company purchases?
As for jokes: People from MK are so 'ard, even their cows are made of concrete!
Didn't say it had to be a good joke...

Hahaha - that's actually good. And in all seriousness, I really do like the grid thing. 1st time I went to Milton Keynes I had a letter and a number and a street name and found the place straight away. I really does make things very easy.
Milton Keynes road system FTW!

It works great as long as you ignore that some of the H roads go vertical and some of the V go horizontal.
The main utilities are buried in the banks either side of the roads so traffic doesn't have to be delayed by roadworks.
The grid wasn't the first design though. Originally the plan was a 4 leaf clover layout, with a monorail around the border. How cool would that have been?
No home was to be more than a 5 minute walk from a bus stop, and 15 minutes from a monorail stop.
Way too expensive though so they dropped it.
They did, back in the 50s/60s foresee a time when homes would have more than one car which is pretty foward thinking for the time.
Although they forgot about the need for a hospital or firestation!
New home owners were given a voucher to buy and plant a tree, resulting in hundreds of trees needing to be ripped up 20-30 years later due to growing too close to roads/buildings etc.
"Note for Americans and other aliens: Milton Keynes is a new city approximately halfway between London and Birmingham. It was built to be modern, efficient, healthy, and, all in all, a pleasant place to live. Many Britons find this amusing." -Good Omens
I like the idea, but wow its easy to get lost when there xD

Random shoes on the road!

Can somebody explain this strange phenomenon to me? Not a single week goes by when i don't drive over a solitary sneaker laying in the middle of the road. Last night alone i passed by two of these lost loafers! Sometimes they're a running shoe without the runner, but could equally be a business shoe without the business man.
So what's going on here? Are people leaving home with their footwear on the roof of their cars only to have their favourite flip-flops go sailing off on the first bend they take? Are moped owners arriving at their destinations only to find that they are one plimsoll short of a pair?
Has anybody here mysteriously lost one half of a nice pair of pumps during their journeys on the road, perhaps stepping out of the car wondering why their stocking clad right foot just took a soaking from that puddle?
Is it the aliens...?

Sounds perfectly plausible to me. I'm thinking Invisible people/Aliens/Government conspiracy, in that order right now, until i hear a better theory!
m1l4droid said:
How about this, an invisible race of aliens, that for some reason can't walk on earth unless wearing human shoes. They are wide spread around the globe, and all governments are "Putin" place by them. But they still roam the streets with human shoes on and stand perfectly still as a human approaches to create mass confusion and then laugh at us!

One legged invisible Aliens though. The shoes never appear in pairs!
Here's the photographic proof. Bear in mind that once you've seen a random shoe in the road, you can't stop seeing them!

where is my f* shoe?!
There's two types of person in the world. One who wonders why there's random shoes in the road, and one who leaves random shoes in the road.
I regularly go to charity shops and buy shoes, preferably very distinctive or colourful ones, and then place them at either end of a county. It's a hobby of mine.
Trolling. If you're just doing it on the internet then you're doing it wrong.
of course apple is with the aliens its obvious,
even wallstreet journal knows that,
the shoe thing was a gimmick to hook you off

Mystery solved/case closed. Now we can wonder about the more important things in life like, for example, is Justin Bieber an Hermaphrodidic species of Alien sent from the far reaches of the Galaxy to inflict torture upon the ears of the human race.
m1l4droid said:
that's not true. Justin Bieber is a government constructed robot, in order to control humans, by either making them follow him like sheep or drive them into insanity, with his monstrous voice.

In all honesty.. I have wondered about the shoe conundrum for several years.. did surveying for quite awhile and have walked down lots of roads and interstates and always was baffled about the 1 shoe issue..
Insanely enough though.. I can top a shoe sighting..
I have seen over 30 "personal massage devices" on the sides of roads..
Wtf?!
