With ice cream sandwich coming out at the end of the year, does galaxy tab not qualify for it? As far as i know its within the 18 period for upgrades as specified by google. Or am i completely wrong on the release date?

i don't think so. even honeycomb will not come in our tab officially but thanks to Spacemoose1 we will have HC soon.
I dont think so either.. I got my tab 6 months ago and feel like its already outdated by the dual cores out now like the xoom and new galaxy tab 10 and with the new icecream comming up I dont think that itll be getting the update.. Also by hearing talk of quad cores coming out.. Im not 100% but I have read they want to push the new android cause the new apple os they want android phones n tabs based on the same instead of froyo n gingerbread on phones and honeycomb on tabs. Who knows we might end up seeing it... Until they announce it we wont know for sure.
Galaxy Tab is a high end device, samsung should take care of their high end customers.
If not, there is CyanogenMod. I get android 2.3.5 faster than Samsung's release
I might get Ice Cream Sandwich faster than Samsung release as well
Guys, we will always get faster releases from Spacemoose, the CM team, ect, as it pertains to the Galaxy Tab. Unfortunately, the device was "dead on arrival", and has seen almost zero support from the carriers or Samsung. I firmly believe that (while the Tab is spectacular) it was nothing more than a "feeler"… a test product, thrown into the market, in order to guage the public's desire for tablet devices. I'm pretty sure that the 10.1, Xoom, and other tablets were already being tested when the 7" Tab came out, and that it was always the plan to make the 10" tablets the real "powerhouse" devices. Fortunately, we have great devs on XDA, who thumb their noses at Samsung's lack of support, and work hard to get us at least one or two really excellent ROMs. No doubt, we will never see a Honeycomb or ICS OTA, but Space is working to complete the Honeycomb 3.2 port, and I'm sure we'll see an ICS firmware almost as soon as it drops! Happy flashing guys!!

Hello guys!
I am coming from the XDA Droid X2 forums. I've never owned a tablet and I am considering to buy the Galaxy tab 8.9 or the Galaxy tab 7.0 plus as my first tablet.
Given that I own a Motorola Droid X2, I am taking several precautions to ensure that my next purchase isn't a giant pain in the ass. So, firstly, I would like to ask you guys if you recommend this tablet or if there is any other 7 - 9 inch tablet that you feel is better than this.
Do you think this is the best 7 - 9 inch tablet and that I am making the right decision? Do you think I should wait for the Galaxy Tab 7.7? I don't want to buy it if it is significantly costlier than this one.
Are there any hardware or software quirks with this device? On my Droid X2, there is one, presumably hardware, issue which causes problems with music playback. We frequently get music stutters. Are there any such minor or major problems on this device that may be potential deal breakers? Apparently there is an SOD (sleep of death) and WiFi issue with the Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus. Is there something like that with this one? I hope not (fingers crossed )
Secondly, is this device's bootloader unlockable? If it is not, that is a big no no for me. I know it is rootable. I noticed that there are several CM9/ICS ROMs out there and that is a big plus. But does this device have official ICS yet or will it be getting it soon?
Overall, are there any quirks I should be aware of about this tablet, or in general about Android tablets? This being my first Android Tablet purchase, I dunno if there are any caveats in choosing Android Tablets over iPads.
Also, the lack of a micro SD card slot troubles me. I know 16 GB is a lot of space, but still the ability to freely expand memory is comforting.
I am very sorry for this huge post. Please bear with me and reply to as many queries as possible.
Thank you very much in advance. Hoping to be a part of this community!
The 8.9 is fully hackable, like most Samsung devices. Bootloader is not an issue.
It doesn't have official ICS but Samsung has promised ICS to this device at some point
In terms of issues Tegra 2 in it of itself as a issue wit HD video playback.
8. 9 is a very manageable size tablet. The 7.7 is on paper a better device but it does have a steeper price you need to consider.
Your biggest set back in Android tablets vs iPad is the number of apps. That has been bridged a little but it is still a big flaw to note. I personally love the Android customization and i am well invested in Android Apps to bother changing.
If you want expandable memory then their are plenty of other Android choices. I think 16gb is plenty in the world of cloud storage
Google Music streams your tunes
Google Docs does work documents
Picasa will web sync google+ and picasa web albms
Dropbox or sugarsync let you store misc files
So there are NO random, potentially fatal/deal breaking issues that a lot of users are reporting, right? Any other problems that people faced?
At this rate, I may consider 8.9 over 7.0 plus for the more vibrant community and the higher res display/larger size.
Thanks.
Btw, guys, do you know what the difference is between the Exynos SoC found in Samsung Galaxy 7.0 plus versus the Tegra 2 on this device?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exynos
The Exynos 4210 is the chip currently in the SGS2s and some SGTs. 4412 is coming soon, but hasn't hit just yet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tegra#Tegra_2_series
T20 is the most common, found in most phones and tablets. Has a weaker CPU and GPU than Exynos, lacks NEON instructions.
Anandtech has an array of benchmarks for both throughout their smartphone/tablet reviews.
Thanks for the help guys! I went ahead and bought the Samsung Galaxy tab 8.9!
I sincerely hope that this was a wise choice. For anyone interested in the details of my decision making process, I wrote a rant here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22791976&postcount=27
Ultimately, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 prevailed over the Mammoth Motorola Xoom and Acer Iconia A200
So, I officially say hello to my new community

Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi (16 GB)
Btw, it says that it has 16 GB but I have only 13.11 GB. I always hated that. Almost every device claims that it has X amount of space but they always have less than that.
I was hoping that this device had say 14.5 to 15 GB but now that I realize it has only 13.11 GB, is that going to be enough or a problem?
Did any of you ever find it troublesome?
Thanks!

Just get Minus and Dropbox and you'll have an extra 12gb of free cloud storage. I also recommend getting a cheap usb adapter.

Then you won't have an issue with it. The world is in the could, and what little isn't is moving there. Cloud server storage is cheaper then onboard storage in the long term for OEMs
im not pretty sure about this but i read some things about this 4.0.5 and it was said it was going to be released on i9000
4.0.5 said to be has a BIG performance fix..
i got this news from this link
http://www.androiddigit.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-and-nexus-s-to-get-android-4-0-5-ics-in-march/
Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S
The news link clearly states only the galaxy nexus and nexus S. Plus it was abundantly made clear in older news posts around the net that the i9000 is not getting ICS and neither will it get the rumored Value pack. As I too am a i9000 user, it kinda sucks to know this
i know samsung said something like that...
but.. dude i think theres a big possibility due to this
Performance FIX thing.. because thats the only one stopping from galaxy S to ICS is Performance..
I'm no great shake on what appears to me to be French, but...
1) Your Article was written for the Nexus and Nexus S and not for the GT-I900Xx (a.k.a the Galaxy S)
2) Where the Article in question even mentions the Galaxy S (Some Table taken from a presumably French source), states quite clearly (even to a non French speaker like myself that the Galaxy S is to only get Android 2.3.6 (Presumably the Value Pack Version), release date February 2012 to be released over Kies.
To indirectly quote your Source it was a table of Official Updates for their current line of Phones.
So I fail to see where you misread this Article into thinking that the Galaxy S was somehow going to get an ICS Update, when Samsung have up to this point stressed that they would not, or could not officially update the GT-I900Xx do to whatever limitations between Touchwiz 3.0 and ICS.
**Edit** What Samsung we're not even gonna get the Value Pack now?
/r/ Sauce kthnxbye!
No chance! Wishful thinking at best. SGS is useless with its 512mb RAM. Either that or the software engineers at Samsung can only compile bloat. The latest iOS seems to function perfectly on iphone4 though. Split between whether i should wait for SGS3 or grab the next iphone and jailbreak the hell outta it. Hmm decisions decisions...

Samsung will forget our phone, if he doesn't yet....
there's ported sgs2 ics firmware for sgs, it's on pre alpha state but its working very good, i'm using it right now
sgs has enough power to ics to work fine

Samsung might forget us, but XDA devs won't! And if the unofficial ICS builds are any indication, our phone sure is powerful enough to handle ICS.
It sure does suck that we're not getting official ICS, but the awesome community here has infinitely improved my experience, so for that I'm glad and grateful.
Like Samsung is going to go trough the trouble of making an ICS version for a phone that is almost two years old.
I'd rather have them focus on creating top-notch software for my next phone..... The SGSIII......
I bought a BELL 8.9LTE Unlocked Tablet, i am using it on ROGERS. When the ICS update finally come out will my tab find the rogers or bell version?

I'm dying as well. Been hunting down an 8.9 as it's an optimal size for gaming (for nearly 2 months). I finally found one bnib for $300 only to find out it's on 3.2 and that' only gets me the old version of my game (that I'm addicted to). I'm literally dying here.
The 10.1 played the game awesomely (does the 10.1 have ics? I thought it did, but it was too big, hence I downgraded.
Anyway., it's supposedly a carrier free 8.9, but I see Bell PVR and crap like that in the apps.
Is there any way to get ICS on this tablet currently or not? I've never rooted or delved into that stuff so if there is a way, I may take a chance and gettur done.
I'm dying here. I'm literally twice a day checking if there's an update. I can't believe there are people who've had the update since July or earlier.

There's no carrier free canadian gtab 8.9 LTE, you maybe just got an unlocked device from the seller. I also have the Bell version 8.9 LTE since release date which I unlocked & now using it with Rogers much more reliable LTE and its always been in the same 3.2 HoneyComb firmware. Currently there is no ICS update for it yet, but I am also patiently waiting for it because I saw great renewed life on my Galaxy Tab 7.7 on ICS and my 11month old daughter's Rogers Gtab 10.1 is running awesome with its recently released Rogers ICS update.
Im pretty sure the ICS Update is coming really soon and it will come when you lease expect it.
I feel ICS will also make this device more awesome.

That's reassuring to know....but still impatient for the release.
Since you disclosed all that info-I have a question for you. Processor-wise, shouldn't both the 8.9 and 10.1 operate similarly? There's a multi-player game I'm addicted to that played great on the 10.1 with ICS (a later version of the game-which I'm thinking is possibly the cause). When I play on the 8.9 this past week I have two issues.
1-controls glitch infrequently (eventhough multi-touch tests don't show any issues)
2-the game is shockingly slow and laggy.
I'm playing on the same network (wifi), no other differences, just device is different, and the game version is different. I'm praying that with ICS the tab will function much better (same as the 10.1), and the compatible more recent version of the game will equally play better.

Processor & CPU Clock wise, on paper Gtab 8.9 LTE is better than the Gtab 10.1
P7500 Gtab 10.1 - only have 1ghz Nvidia Tegra 2 T20
While
i957m Gtab 8.9 LTE - have 1.5ghz Nvidia Tegra 2 T25
Comparing my i957m to my p7500 when both of them we're still 3.2HC - the i957 was more faster & stable.
Now that the p7500 got the ICS update, difference in speed and stability to my i957m is night & day. i957m doesn't even come close to the p7500.
So hopefully when we finally get the official ICS update to our i957m it will maximize its speed and stability to the fullest to solve your problem to that game you're playing.

I read a Google + post by cyanogenmod stating that after android 4.2, they will stop support for tegra 2 devices. I was wondering what is going to happen to our beloved GT i9000. Now i know that the GT i9000 isnt a tegra 2 device but the post got me worried, and i wanted to know what you guys are thinking?
i dont use tegra, so i got no point bout that, but its quite dissapointing as they prefer abandon their user rather than supporting them
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Apparantly it has somethig to do with tegra 2 devices being NON-NEON and android moving towards devices with NEON support
Update (Only affects Exynos 4):
This doesnt affect us (GT i9000) directly but affects Galaxy S2 users. Apparantly cyanogenmod have had problems with Galaxy S2 support since CM9/ICS so they are only getting Nightlies for the forseeable future. I wonder where that leaves us GT i9000 users?
