Can't Root - "searching for the phone" please help - Motorola Droid 3

psouza's one-click root is not working for me. when i try to run it, it says "searching for the phone" and hangs.
I just got a replacement from Verizon and i notice it is XT862. Does this matter?
I have the proper drivers installed, I have Debugging enabled, and it USB is set to Charge Only. Not using the original usb cable bc I don't have it (does this really make a difference??) but i have tried numerous different cables.

Any ideas???

Did you try mass storage or pc mode?

I had that issue with my USB cable. I used the one with my device and it didn't come up. I went grab another USB cable in the house and it worked.

yeah, tried them. Didn't mention that cause if I understand correctly, it should be in charge only.
thanks for the help!

I hope you figure something out good luck
Edit: have you tried running command prompt as administrator?

yeah. same result.

I read in another thread that you were required to us the cable that came with the phone for it to be detected. But also, I used a BlackBerry branded cable to do it on mine, and it worked.

come to think of it, i think i used a blackberry cable to root my first d3. will give it a shot and report back.
why the heck would it matter what cable you use? Though it doesn't make sense to me, it appears that the cable is indeed important.

Download the USB and Charging Drivers off of Motorolas website, make sure your phone connects to USB mass storage after you do this, then switch to charging mode.

It took a blackberry cable *and* reinstall of the moto drivers, but im up and running and rooted. now, to figure out how to get my other d3 to stop bootlooping...

glad to hear that you were able to root sorry about the bootloop though, have you tried using the SBF file to flash your rom back to stock to attempt again? i'm just getting into the d3 mod scene so i can't provide links to files or anything other than what i was told to do in response to questions i had and unfortunately that was one of them lol,

I had to use the cord that came with my phone. For some reason Motorola is bad about not using standards. For example there was an old 355 flip phone that is a Motorola I used to have and it wouldn't charge with anything but a Moto charger. It may be the same port but not the same compatibility. Thankfully it will accept a charge from any microUSB source.

Doesn't your phone have to have "USB Debugging" enabled as well?
USB Debugging enabled + choose Charge Only mode. That should do it.

Yeah, I was able to flash the SBF. It was really exhausted and couldn't figure it out when I originally posted, but after a nights sleep, I was able to do it just fine.

Before I send my phone back to verizon, I was wondering - Is my phone still rooted after I flashed the SBF? I would ordinarily just run an app that checks, but i can't get past that annoying "activate your phone" screen.

my keyboard is broken so they sent me a replacement. It was during the process that I was trying to unroot the one thats going back to verizon that I softbricked it.
I have fixed it. Now I want to know if the phone is still rooted or not. And the radios have been totally fine the whole time.

It's not recognized when the phone is on? Seeing as you posted this topic using your phone I assume so lol. Have you tried restarting your computer?

Make sure you are using the oem usb cable. I had the same problem, changed cables and it worked
some cheap cables are for charging ... bt headsets and other stuff the data cables dont connect, its just for power.

You gotta make sure that your usb port is directly connected to your motherboard (usually back of your computer).
same usb port that has always worked. ive tried them all by now anyway

it must be a powered usb hub, on my buddies laptop only 1 out of 4 usb ports saw his phone.
if you can get into download mode you arent bricked.
try installing i9000 drivers, or try another computer.
I came up with this a while back. Could very well be the same issue.
Let me start by saying I'm flash happy, and everyone that knows me personally, tells me to just quit jacking with my phone. NOT A CHANCE! I'm on my 3rd Cappy and shouldn't have ever exchange it again. I only had to in the beginning, because I was a newbie and had not know enough, but to get me in trouble.
I presume that this should work on all Windows OS's. I personally am running Vista Enterprise x86.
My symptoms:
Plug in phone to the usb and it there was about a 15% chance off being able to mount to usb, and Windows recognizing as a mass storage device. I tried un-installing drivers and re-installing and it would work some of the time, until the point came when parts of the driver install would fail. Then to the point when it was just completely unrecognizable. I thought I had it fixed because it seemed intermittent. In the middle of flashing to stock, something interrupted communication between the pc and my phone. Restarted the phone and attempted the flash again. Got a little farther and froze again. I had to use another pc that I had never connected my phone to before and I was able to use my jig to trigger download mode, because no buttons combinations would allow it into download mode.
This got me thinking that it was specific to my pc and not my cable or my phone.
My resolution:
I went straight to the registry and went to find. I deleted every entry that came up for "i897" and "i9000" excluding what was listed in the system volume information, as I didn't have permissions to remove any keys. I didn't keep count, but I probably deleted 300-400 registry keys that pointed to my phone. It seems as if with each developers rom that I had flashed, there was an entry for a different device. Don't quote me on that, because it is just my personal consensus. I also un-installed the samsung drivers, the unknown device driver, kies software, and anything associated with samsung. I noticed that next to all of the i9000 instances, the hex key for me started with 1000ee. So I also searched for the first part of that key trying to ensure that all instances of the device. Lastly, I deleted the samsung folder from program files.
I installed the samsung drivers package commonly listed in all of the other threads for x86 operating systems. I plugged in my phone and watched as each and every driver installed successfully. Keep in mind different drivers are installed depending on if you have usb debugging on/off, and the options for if the preferences on you phone are set to media, storage, or kies. I have multiple usb ports, however testing has shown me that, for me and my setup, I can plug into the port that I used when installing the drivers the final time, I am able to connect consistently. Earlier today, I tried to plug into a different usb port and it was an unknown device. I am led to believe, this is because I didn't un-install the unknown device on this particular port.
If you intend to work in the registry, please remember to always back it up first. You can always restore.
Hopefully my findings can help you as they did me. Happy flashing and I would like to thank the community for the dedication to assisting each other and the developers, for making flashing, better than crack cocaine. Flashing rom's doesn't make you twitch near as much as a crackhead.
Well since you can't use your phone you should sell it to me

Error applying update.zip - signature verification failed

Long story short, I've been haiving a bunch of problems, and someone pointed me to an update.zip file that might help me unroot my phone without needing a USB connection. When I go into recovery mode and select "install package", I get this message:
E:signature verification failed

Does anyone know what I may need to do in order to clear this up freaking problem?

Omg.. Another signature failed issue lol
Thanks for taking care of this one Studa
My apologies. I did look at the "related topics" that came when I did my post, but that one didn't come up. Guess I wasn't through enough.
I'm pretty new to all this, and I'll admit that part of that linked thread is a bit over my head so this may be another stupid question. My main issue is that I get an error trying to connect via USB, and it looks like all those fixes require Odin 1 click. Does one of those methods allow for the fix without a USB connection (I do think I have the ability to get a file from the computer to my phone via the external SD card).

What you mean you get an error connecting the USB? Could you be more precise?
Also, the signature failed fix is quite easy. Tbh, you simply have to have your phone plugged in in debugging mode and run the .bat file.
Please explain your usb issue.

I know, I know. I was saying for when/if it works. Duh
When I try to connect via USB I get a "USB Device Malfuctioned" error. (Which I HAVE searched on ) that I can't seem to find a fix for. I've tried it on 3 different computers, each with a different version of Windows, with the same result so don't think it's a driver issue.
I've done a factory data reset (several atually) and am still having problems, so I'd like to get a warranty replacement. But my phone is rooted so I'm worried about them voiding my waranty. Basically where I am now is tryign to find a way to unroot my phone without the USB so I can get it replaced. That lead me to the signature verifaction error and the shame of a premature post.
how loose are your ethics?
if your phone doesnt boot at all they can't tell if its rooted. a few 2 second bursts in the microwave should do it, don't do it any longer than that at a time. you don't wanna have any physical signs you just wanna fry the curcuits.
just PLAY DUMB and you should get a warranty replacement.

I'm not opposed to hiding the fact that it's been rooted, or if a fix I tried bricked it I'd be okay returning it, but I'm not sure I want to go as far as frying it in a microwave.
I've been looking for an ap in the market that would unroot for me, but so far none of the ones I've found have worked for me. Do I have no other options for something I could load directly to my phone via the SD card (I do have the ability to put something on my external SD card and transfer it over to the phone)?

no apps that i know of work for froyo to root/unroot without needing a computer and a working usb port ... what you will have to try is fix the 3e recovery manually. i dont think that update.zip will unroot, it just roots, but you could try. If that doesnt work go grab cognition rom from development flash that but while its in the process pop the battery out. if youre "lucky" you will either get a "phone....!....pc" screen or a hard brick in either case all eveidence will be erased.
this process will require some research and learning on your part...
Are you SURE you have the correct drivers for your computer? When I tried to use my phone on someone elsewhere computer the computer would not install it until I installed the samsung drivers from the odin one click post.
Can you get into download mode? Method varies based on build number or phone. Try turning your phone off, holding the two volume keys and plugging in usb, if you see a big yellow triangle with an android and a shovel you are in download mode. Once in download mode the computer will see your phone as a different device and install more drivers. If all that works, you can use odin one click to go back to stock.
Once back to stock your problem may be fixed anyway, if not it will be unrooted and you can return it to att. Morals intact.

lol Studa, you should stop helping people with their phone and start helping them destroy it
As for Cognition, it flashes the 2nd bootloader (sbl.bin) and once you start playing with bootloaders, you increase your chance of bricking. Which is why Studa suggested it.. Basically, you could just unplug your phone when Odin if showing Sbl.bin and you would have a brick in your hand = You bring it to the store saying it never turned on again after updating through Kies.
But like Studa said, you have some reading to do

I'm pretty sure on the drivers. I removed what I had and re-installed from a link I found online. From the searching I've done it seems that "Device Malfunctioned" error is the kiss of death. I've not found anyone yet who's recovered from that.
I remember getting into dowload mode when I did the update to 2.2 but don't recall the method. plugging in the USB cable with the volume buttons pressed just powers up the phone.

The method is actually a bit different then what he mentionned:
Unplug usb;
Pull battery;
Hold volume buttons (and keep holding no matter what);
Plug usb in your pc and then your phone;
Put the battery back in and wait until the android with a shovel shows up.
It can take a few tries too before it works.

[Q] Phone won't connect to computer

Alright, so before I get flamed, I have searched for over an hour today, and I have not been able to figure this out. I am not new to android, rooting, custom roms, and editing files, so I have tried a multitude of different things.
To the point, my Droid 3 will not connect to my computer. It did a couple weeks ago when I flashed the Liberty Rom onto it, but now it'll just charge and not go into the USB mode. The only reason I know it is charging is when I disconnect the cord it says the disconnected message.
I have tried a couple different cables, and I usually use my stock cable that came with my D3. I have also tried restarting my phone and computer. I even flashed the newest Liberty Rom the hard way and still no luck.
If someone could please help me out I would be VERY grateful as this is a PITA!!!
Thanks in advance!
My two cents would be, try different usb port and make sure you have the most current moto drivers.
Have had luck with uninstalling driver pack and reinstalling.
Hope that helps.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
I appreciate the help, unfortunately uninstalling the drivers didn't work, unless I didn't get the correct drivers? I went into uninstall programs. In the device manager nothing came up for my phone or drivers. And I have also tried different ports but to no luck. Thanks again for the reply.
Have you tried a different computer? A different device? Let's just rule out that this isn't a computer issue first...
My Zune works in all of my ports, and my other computer. My Phone however does not. It does the same thing as my other computer, although I guess I don't have the drivers on the other computer, but it would still come up as usb connection right? All this does is charge, sometimes.
Have you tried Linux? No drivers are needed. download a live CD and see if it helps.

Can you explain?
("Very Important"!) PLEASE POST!!!
After sufferring through the same issue and delving deeply for almost two days,I have found the culprit!!! IT IS THE USB CORD AND NOT THE DRIVERS OR ANYTHING ELSE!!"SIMPLY USE THE FIRST USB CORD THAT YOU USED THE VERY FIRST TIME YOU PLUGED INTO YOUR COMPUTOR AND THAT WILL RECTIFY(FIX) YOUR PROBLEM.(IT HAS TO BE THE VERY FIRST USB CORD OTHERWISE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM UNTIL AND NO OTHER COMPUTOR WILL RECOGNIZE YOUR DEVICE UNTIL YOU DO WHAT I SAY.I thought it was the rooting of my phone that initially caused the issue or maybe an app, however,I found the culprit. The usb cord!!!(WHATEVER USB YOU USED FOR THE VERY FIRST ,STOCK OR NOT,IT IS THE ONLY ONE YOUR COMPUTOR WILL RECOGNIZE!!! I HOPE THIS HELPS THE MANY OF YOU THAT ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE AND GOOD LUCK

Phone in USB Host Mode

Hello!,
I got my phone into a weird situation, every time I try to connect to my PC, it's saying "Phone is in USB host mode", the PC tries to recognizes and nothing happens, after that the phone won't charge and stays like that until I rebooted, I can charge it with the original charger after this.
My device:
HTC One AT&T 32GB
ROM: ARHD 41.0
I also tried this method with no results: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2481211
Anyone with this situation too?

You mean it's showing up as QHSUSB_DLOAD in Device Manager?
Unfortunately that would indicate a hard brick, no fix, as far as I am aware of.
Welcome to the group of unfortunate people.
I guess the best option would be to send it back for warranty repairs, mine is the same and I'm 99.99% sure it has to do with the charging port.
Unfortunately for me I'm out of the US so warranty shipping is not an option at the moment.
There are other threads about this problem, but so far the only ones I heard that solved this problem was by repair or replace.

No, it's not bricked it works ok but only charges through wall charger and if you plug it up to a pc it gets into "USB Host Mode" and then you have to reboot to be able to charge from the wall charger.
My HTC showed the same message. Saying it can not charge into host mode.
HTC only charges powered off.

Indeed man, same situation here, I'm actually in Colombia, so not an option to send it, as I can't go back to factory settings without connecting it to the PC.
@nkk71 The device is fully functional, it's just not getting detected on my pc.

What Windows version you running?
but be careful, QHSUSB_DLOAD mode is a brick... sooner or later
maybe best to get yourself an ubuntu live usb, and check adb and fastboot connections there. you can use this guide by @tobesedated to create a Live USB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606577
maybe it's just bad/outdated windows drivers.

Steps 8-15 of my guide show how to set up adb/fastboot in Ubuntu 32bit and to check if your device is recognized. You don't have to install Ubuntu just select to try it. I think that's what scares everyone off, is thinking they have to install the OS...It seems like a lot of work but it really isn't and compared to what you've gone through, it can't hurt....good luck

Win 7 and XP are pretty much OK with any drivers & hboot & firmware/rom, but what is it exactly showing you when you say "USB Host Mode"?
Have you considered uninstalling everything with HTC.... in control panel, and installing newer version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2089508
then see if you get MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) working again.
USB Host Mode (as in Qualcomm High Speed USB Download Mode) is NOT a good sign! it's a brick about to happen.
maybe try changing the cable you are using to your PC!!!
EDIT: and make sure you're phone's USB port is not dirty or similar

1. "Phone is in USB mode" appears as a notification on the phone when plugged to the computer.
2. Installed 3 different ROMs with the same result, uninstall everything, and nothing.
3. Don't know how to get back MTP.
4. Brick??
5. I try to charge it, but same thing happens.
6. Clean the port, and nothing.

let's take this down a notch, we dont care what your phone says, we care what shows up in Windows 7 Device Manager (or XP, maybe even Win8):
for example
I really haven't explored what steps are needed to get it back to stock, but mine connects to the pc as long as it's in bootloader so I can flash stuff like Fw but nothing that need to get into the sd card. (as far as I know).

I'm thinking this a port issue, is damage somehow, however, I hope to find a software solution.
New Firmware
Phone that was purchased was not recognized by my computer in recovery and was locked with no S-Off and did not have a Super CID, but assuming that you have all of those things already and are developing these issues then I would try updating the firmware. For some reason, after flashing the 5.11.1540.9 firmware from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485651 and updating to ARHD 71.1 the charging issue all has seemed to disappear. If anyone wants the full run down of how I got from my original non-functioning and unrecognized phone to where it is now I can put in details, but as far as I can tell the issue is just with the firmware if you find yourself being able to intermittently charge in different scenarios when it is off.
Loading New Firmware
Also, for some reason, computer would not recognize phone with TWRP recovery yet I could push files through adb when using CWM recovery. So what happened for me was loading up CWM and pushing the files that I needed into the data folder and flashing TWRP to then install it or rebooting the phone as normal and finding the file with something like a root file explorer. I feel like I may not be very clear with this so post if there needs to be more clarification.
it's a strange issue ,i think it is a hardware problem, happen to me and i try everything possible, without success, than i charge phone when power of and it was the only way ,but led was flashing so it was intermittent charging,i was able to charge only to 97%..i use my phone and somehow next day i was able to charge phone, but then problem occur again...and wired thing is that fastboot devices list is not empty but adb devices list is empty,so phone is not fully recognized by computer, and i forgot to say that day when i was able to charge phone, adb command worked...that day i flashed firmware recovery and rom again ,because i thought it will resolve the problem...

CM13 and future son in law bricked my Lg G2

So here is what I know, an attempt was made to update my G2 by someone other than myself. It now has a black screen and no recovery, it has also been attempted to be repaired by the same person. My pc no longer sees my phone, no download mode or anything else. Is there any hope for this device?
Well, any thoughts from the vast knowledge pooled on here?

When you start it pick #4 fixed then #5 unbrick.. You must have had USB Debugging mode Enable prior to bricking.. Also check device manager in windows and check ports.. Will try to help you the best I can, had the same issue 3 days after getting the phone.. If you get it to work after use th Lg program and do fix phone or you will have a lot of issues.
No JOY,

The problem I'm running into is there isn't a bunch of disks shown, only the fixed disks in my comp. So nothing is being seen or they are not there to see.

That is what should happen.. You need the qhsusb QUALCOMM DRIVER..
it is seen as that and on com 7, tried the srktool, no drives detected. the qhsusb_bulk driver loads so it does see something......
Well, I guess it's dead if no one else has any suggestions....... what a shame I really liked this device.

I have the VS980 (Verizon version) and I was completely...and I mean completely dead (due to my own mistake) , no charge, no power, no download mode, no led, nothing at all. I had a full on 100% brick sitting on my desk. BUT.....I went here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/general/lg-g2-unbrickable-fix-real-hard-brick-t2904404 and was able to bring it back to life. Now yes you do have to open the device and mess with inside parts but i was able to get mine going. The guide here is for the other models (specifically not the vs980) but I was able to finagle the inside parts to make it work the way I needed to. From there I was able to boot back up and i flashed all the way back to 10B and just OTA back up to lollipop and root again and install TWRP and I'm back up to where I was a few weeks ago, of course I lost everything (texts, photos) in the process but I am back up and running and I am happy I was able to pull that off thanks to the great folks who figure all this stuff up for us.
So I would say go for it and try it, or if not I could do it for you, and if not I'm am surely positive that someone here can help you figure it out with your current situation. Cheers.
PS, if you dont want to mess with it, just let me have it LOL!
