2gb cap? - Motorola Droid Bionic

What is it with people saying the bionic has a cap? I upgraded mine to 5gb via the my Verizon app and it worked. Why would they only let you get 2gb in the first place?

2GB is what you get for the old unlimited cost.

"Capped" just means that if you go over you will incure overages. Verizon has three current data plans for smartphones:
2GB for $30.00
5GB for $50.00
10GB for $80.00
If you go over the amount of data that you pay for then there is an overage fee of $10 for every 1GB you go over.
If you use 2.5GB of data every month then the best choice for you is the 2GB plan. You will incure 1GB of overage for $10, making your data bill for the month $40.00.
If you go over 3GB a month on a regular basis then the 5GB plan is for you
EDIT* Throttling (thought I would clear this up as well)
"Throttling" is a term used when you service provider slows down your data speed. Some service providers throttle when you have reached your data "cap"
Verizon does NOT throttle any 4G device (even if its using the 3G network) no matter how much data you use.
The only time Verizon will throttle is if you are among the top 4% of 3G data users.

You know what. You are completely right 100% and I am very sorry for stating things I incorrectly assumed you would have cleared up with Verizon via a phone call before presuming to know the entirety of revised tiered data plans all because the app you were using allowed you to up your usage limit from 2-5gbs per billing cycle.
That's my fault and I take full responsibility for my inability to appropriately discern your intention.

Throttled after 2GB of data usage? WTF?

So I've just been notified that i am in the top 5% of data usage and I have been throttled BIG TIME. From getting 8000-10,000kb down to now only getting 150 down. Are you kidding me att?
The kicker is I've only used 2gb of data! Is this att's way of finally trying to make the unlimited plan disappear?

Damn... wish I could say I didn't expect this.
If I begin to get throttled at 2GB, I will request a hard copy of the report of all AT&T users Data usage... seems only fair if they can determine I am in the top 5%, that I should be able to see their proof... Plus I assume it would cost them a bt of money to print that and mail it.
Thankfully it has not happened yet.
It may be regional. I am near ny. Point is this. If 3 months ago the top 5% of user were getting double digits in data usage, how the help does that drop so fast when more and more people are getting fast smart phones that use more data.
Something is fishy.
Where are the lawyers on this forum. This is the end of unlimited data as we know it. **** you AT&T
Yeah, unfortunately its not the top 5% of users, its the top 5% of "unlimited" users. All these people that are getting smartphones or have got smartphones in the last almost 2 years cant get unlimited data unless they already had it and are grandfathered in. As people change their data plans for plans with tethering, leave AT&T, or just drop their unlimited data for one reason or another, stop being factored into that number. As the number of unlimited users drop, so will the amount of data that you have to use to be considered to be in the top 5%.
The fields from which they use are plan-unlimited platform-android then they narrow it down to LTE and since there are not alot if LTE users especially with unlimited they do it quick I have a sgs ii with unlimited and I was at 6gb on hspa and 3g and 3 gb on my vivid , guess which one got the throttle message.....
I went crazy on att about this , I got credit but its automated....

This will eventually lead to selflimitation, people will start using less and less, and we'll might even see throttling after 1GB in the future (top 5%)...

You will probably probably see it soon. They didn't even send me a notice telling me that I'm approaching top 5% and I wasn't even at 3GB. I remember it happened exactly a week ago on the 1st of the month, as I watching some clips in the afternoon and everything was just as usual, then later that night when I popped open the browser, NOTHING would load correctly. NOTHING!!! Freakin eh...
At first I thought I had a bad connection, then when I got to an area to 5 bars it was still giving me 150. I switched apn and got hspa speed back and thought maybe ATT is doing some maintenance work or something, they couldn't be throttling me at a shade below 3GB. Needless to say, my billing cycle starts on the 3rd of the month and of course LTE came back on.....THROTTLED!!!!!
If they are going to throttle (not that I agree throttling at 2GB is right, because it is downright RIDICULOUS), at least cap it to a speed where people can still somewhat browse the web, 150 is F*cking stupid. Normally I'm not a person to display extreme anger in forums, but this has gotten me to be pretty pissed at how they are BSing the unlimited customers.
So what can we do about this? Can we get some sort of class action lawsuit going? I dont know how to do any of this but I think we have the right to make a big stink about this.
Face it we are getting ****ed right now!

It's their way of thanking us for being customers of theirs over the years. I was Cingular before att bought them. Gsm carriers that can compete against the titans are not in my area. Sad times indeed
Edit: Does anyone have a few billion dollars lying around or some wealthy investors that would be interested in starting up another US cellular company? Lol. No or sparse competition has allowed this to happen

I got throttled once I hit 2GB too. So unlimited means <2GB at LTE speeds for $30 but you can pay $30 for 3GB. Got to give it to ATT, unlimited data but speed will vary drastically. For me it was less than 100KB. From 20MBps to 100kbps. Pretty sad.
It's not just LTE. It's hspa too.

Yup, but lte users can create a HSPA APN and avoid the throttle while using the HSPA network.
Please explain. Becuase I normally use the stock pta apn, but also have the hspa+ one and the wap.Cingular one that I have added in, and all of them were throttled the same for me.

Sprint did good - Non-HTC Related

I just called Sprint because my mom uses an LG Optimus S™
She consumes about 5-6 mb of data per month, but since it's a "smartphone" she has to get charged the $10 fee.
Well, I called in after having been with the phone for a couple of months and asked (Not told) if I had to pay for the fee since she only consumes about 5-6mb of data and doesn't really utilize the phone to its capabilities.
After putting me on hold of a min or two, she came back and told me that they evaluated her account and data consumption and will issue a $10 credit monthly to cover that.
I was reminded a couple of times that I should be paying for it because of the type of phone. Also, once I switch to a new phone the discount will be voided.
Still, their customer service really helped out. That's a $120+(taxes) yearly savings.

That $10 fee is mandatory for smart phones its the data package for it in lames term everyone should pay for it and you shouldn't be excluded from that I mean I know you use a lot of data so do I. Try talking to them now and mention the fact that they can trace the line the previous months to see the data pattern.
Since my mom doesn't even text, she can see this feature is lost on her.
I guess that's why they did it. I also have a business account with 6 lines, so that could have factored in to their decision.
I just called customer service today and they moved my upgrade up two weeks. So both my fiance and I got to upgrade our phones today. I was really impressed for how willing they were to satisfy us.

There are a couple models where they comp the premium data fee, like the Replenish. Might want to have your mom get one of these units instead, if they are available when she upgrades.

Yeah, they told me that. I'm bidding on one as a back up.
Originally the 10 dollars a month was a WiMAX surcharge, only charged to people with WiMAX phones... A couple months to a year later they renamed it to "premium data" and started charging all smart phones, which is a joke because they barely have any phones that aren't considered a "smart phone" anymore.
I have been with Sprint for 14 years and believe me I have had my share of ups and downs with their Customer Service Department. I have a fairly large account with them (8 phones) and have always managed to resolve issues. Sometimes I didn't get everything I was asking for, but was satisfied in the end.
Basically it's their plan pricing that keeps me a customer. As many have stated, their service in my area is not the greatest but having compared plans with other carriers I simply couldn't afford them.

Wifi Tethering (T-Mobile)

I know most of us have rooted roms and tethering is not a problem but just in case you dont want to circumvent the system T-Mobile now has free tethering with unlimited data plans. At least thats what they told me yesterday and added to my regular No-Contract acct. Call them up and check it out or sign up online and see. I was told its a feature that was just added on for them this month. My boy added it to his Iphone so I know it does work...
Hope it helps someone.... If this is old info my bad:good:

Not sure how else to say this but here we go. Yesterday while in the T- Mobile store the rep I formed me of a recent change. Anyone with unlimited internet can now get tethering for free.... Unlimited tethering and not the first 509 as stated on the web by T-Mobile. I am not a rookie and was simply passing this on .Now if you have asked a rep today and they told you different then fine. But if your statements are based on anything prior to today ease refrain til you ask. Now I am simply posting as said prior as an FYI.... There IS a recent change in the fine print language that indeed allows 500MB of tethering on 'Unlimited' data accounts, and I believe this is what the rep was referring to, whether intentional or not. It likely will never be 'unlimited tether' due to the fact of network restraints, and they have repeatedly indicated they do NOT want to be anyone's ISP for home-based bandwidth. Widespread 'unlimited tether' would bring this network to its knees in mere days. Please consider that this rep wasn't completely knowledgeable/forthcoming.

Welp, I did some quick google-digging, and DID come up with an interesting change in terms on all plans BUT the Unlimited Nationwide 4G, which still maintains the 500MB limit:
http://deals.t-mobile.com/unlimited-4g-data-no-contract
This page indicates all other 'Unlimited' data plans (no UN4G) can tether to their full rate...and fall back to 2G when the bucket empties. I'm happy to be wrong, playya! LOL!
EDIT:
Aw man: again misleading..the fine print:
"Smartphone Mobile Hotspot: (Tethering/Wi-Fi Sharing): Qualifying plan required. Plan data allotment applies.; Unlimited 4G data plan includes 500 MB of tethering. No roaming. Use of connected devices subject to T-Mobile Terms and Conditions."
This statement can be read several ways, naturally...TMO really needs to step up and simplify this silly language.

Gotcha...correct info is more important than right/wrong. I just recall several months back a thread where users were bemoaning paying for Unlimited Nationwide 4G and not getting ANY tethering...even when they wished to pay extra for it...it simply wasn't offered (assumed too abusive to the network). Even I was shocked they changed and allowed 500MB on that UN4G plan. Cheers!
I have the $30 pre paid 5 gig plan and you can add tethering for $15 a month. I have used it though with apps just during power outages. I never had an issue but I don't come close to using the 5 gigs anyways.

I just added it to my plan. I chatted with them first to confirm that it could later be canceled without affecting the basic plan. They prorated the first monthly fee because I'm already in middle of the billing period.
It annoys me that they make it so hard to find exact terms and conditions. At the moment, the blurb on the signup page doesn't say anything about limiting the high speeds to the first 500 MB, just says "Plan data allotment applies." The allotment is first 5 GB at up to 4G speed; time will tell if I get that with other connected devices.
How would they even know (sorry if that's an ignorant question)? Truth be told, I've been tethering all afternoon since my DSL went down. I decided to make it "official" when I found out it could take a couple of days to get my regular DSL back up again, but I didn't have any problems throughout the afternoon tethering a laptop and a tablet. Other than suddenly seeing a surge of use, how would they know I have tethered devices?

They randomly check user agent strings. I started getting the warning texts a few months ago (was on value unlimited which doesn't have a tethering allotment) and then they blocked me from accessing Internet Explorer from my laptop via mobile hotspot (but could still use Chrome or my iPad). One phone called they switched me to Simple Choice and kept my contract term so I didn't have to pay a migration fee.

I just switched to unlimited 4g a few weeks ago and I've occasionally gotten rerouted to a page that says I don't have tethering or I've reached my data limit. Disabling tethering and reloading the page works to bypass the page I'm using native android tether, and that's the only problem I've seen so far.

$150 (lines 1 & 2) + 3 x $20 (lines 3,4,5) + $10 x 5 (Premium data fee) = $260 not including taxes.
1500 peak non-mobile minutes, mobile to mobile is free, off peak is free, unlimited data
After:
$50 + $40 + $30 + $20 + $20 + $30 x 5 (Unlimited data) = $310
Unlimited voice, data
So, you're trading $50 /mo for the unlimited calls. Sounds like a pretty raw deal for Everything Data Family users with max members. For a family of 2 smartphones its:
$150 + $10 x 2 = $170
vs.
$50 + $40 + 2 x $30 = $150
It's cheaper here, because Sprint charges so little for the 3rd, 4th and 5th members.
So this has no effect on me basically? I'm the only one on my plan so this news means nothing to me? Here I thought the price war was on too lol... The race to the bottom

I have everything 450 for $80 right now, so if I switch to the new plan, I can get unlimited minutes...
sounds decent, but I don't really use 450 a month anyway.

Me neither so this plan is basically useless to us?

Something to pay attention to with the new Sprint plans.....Fine Print:
"While using your device outside of Sprint's coverage area, (ROAMING) you are allowed 100MB of data per month. Should you bypass this limit, Sprint "may discontinue service."
Source
I know not that long ago my plan was $119 and that included my first 2 lines. Now its only 1 line and a extra $10 for the premium data and the 4 other lines are $29.99 each. I dont know how that happened because i thought sprint allowed you to upgrade your phone without changing your plan but now i see thats not true. Maybe i just understood it wrong....lol
Very interesting. This makes my hand squeeze a lil more on the trigger to add a line and get the ONE instead of upgrading my wife's phone.
Then I would have the ONE and the wife would have S3
Because as of right now, I get worst service on my Virgin mobile(S3 and Evo)then on my wife's Sprint s2(go figure) and now VM is under new terms/agreement as of 8-13-13.

VM don't let you access LTE do they? Don't they only sell WiMax phones?

I'll just stick with my SERO-P.

That is correct. They sell LTE phones like my S3 but.......
If they do then it has to be very limited.(as I have been to Phoenix, southern California and Las Vegas. Have only got WiMAX ). WiMAX is the highest data I have received yet from then on my s3.
Also, about 1.5 months I called about my
Bogus service. The lady said." We are undergoing a lot of new changes and I am sorry for the inconvenience" I then asked, "is Virgin Mobile Going to be similar to Straight talk" ? I got a pause then she said, " like I said, Virgin Mobile is undergoing a lot of changes "
This gives me a excuse to get the HTC ONE I have been wanting so long lol

I have 2 lines, first line is $110 + $10 and the other is 19.99 + $10 that's $149.99 plus tax and insurance, if I get the unlimited my way, it's $90 for the two lines plus $60 for data, that's $150 but I'm getting unlimited minutes, which I probably don't need, but might as well get it.

Another difference is switching to one of the new plans will lock it in for life where as staying on my 1500 min 4 line everything plan is subject to sprint changing at their will if they choose to do so in the future. On each of the 4 phones we never reach 1 gb of data usage in a month ever. We are always on wifi, home and work so I don't know what I should do in my situation.

they screwed you...I've upgraded my wifes last Christmas & I still have the $110 everything data family plan....but that only includes the 1st line. Lines 2-5 are $20, plus $10 for premium data for smartphones (unless grandfathered). Having a 21% discount helps
they updated the plan awhile back, it was changed to $150 for 1st & 2nd lines, 3-5 are $30/mo, no premium data charge....I was just about to update to this plan, now it's gone
oh, and I like this part....
I have a discount through my employer. Does my employer discount work with the new plans?
Discounts apply to the monthly data charge rather than the primary rate plan for lines on the Unlimited, My Way plan. The My All-in plan is non-discountable.

I got the Everything Data 450 plan iirc, with my 22% discount I end up paying like $84 a month with insurance/tep. If they give me the discount on the new plan it should be right about the same but what I dont like is the small print of "Other plans may receive prioritized bandwidth availability . Streaming video maybe limited to 1mbps". Who knows if they are gonna cap everyone over a certain limit, thats what I dont want.
I just called and the sprint rep told me they dont offer any employer discounts on these plans, so I wont be switching.

how big of a data plan and how much data do you use?

so i lost my udp, but now have 12g of data. im curious what size data plans everyone has and what you actually use. having never had a tiered data plan before now im paranoid im gonna go over. with the udp i tethered my phone instead of getting home internet, during my last move i broke down and set up roadrunner.
I have an All-you-can-eat tariff average usage is about 15-20GB per month. But looking at the way you've worded your post I'm going to assume you're in the States? Not sure you guys have tariffs that generous over there.
yea, im in the us. i used to have unlimited data, but my note 2 is almost dead and with 3 kids and having moved a few weeks ago funds to flat buy outright just isnt there. i used to download torrents, tether, run netflix, ect daily. i would average 40-50 gigs a month, but that was with no home internet though.
I'm on a grandfathered AT&T "unlimited" data plan with my Note 2. I use just short of 5 GB per month on average. I get AT&T's throttle warning on the last day of the month many times.
I'm on wifi at work and at home, so data is really only used in the car.
I'm on ATT grandfather plan. I used about on avg 18-20gb a month, throttled after 5gb.
If I wasn't throttled I'd probably use double or so.
Probably the main reason I'm thinking of switching to Tmobile since they don't throttle on their highest plan. But I'm getting pos/neg responses about their services.
Anyone have it in Orange, CA area with advice?
I avg about 16gb on Tmobile unlimited. I have good coverage at home and at work. I live in GA.
Verizon unlimited, I use anywhere from 4-8 GB a month.
Sprint unlimited, between me and my wife.....around 15 - 17 a month. I have a friend though that has T - Mobile and uses somewhere between 30 - 60 GB a month. He also once cause they said there wasn't a limit used 3500 GB.
T-Mobile unlimited and use about 20 a month, also about another 3 of tethering. I had Sprint and could only use about 5-6 because the network was so slow on the Note 3.

Did you just take a shot at the good ol' U.S. of A?
Straight Talk 2.5gb and I don't think I've ever gone over. What are you guys doing with your phones that you need 10-20 gb of data a month?

Lmao, not in a derogatory manner I assure you lol.
T-Mobile Unlimited. Normally under 20GB a month. No house usage though as I have 50mb/20mb business connection at the house.
I am grandfathered into the ATT Unlimited. I grow angry every time I hit 5gb....the throttling is horrible. I use my phone for the GPS daily and I hit some high data marks. Its frustrating. I actually call and ***** about the throttling everytime I hit it. It makes me that mad. Unlimited, yes, but I need full speed for all data I use. Still happy with ATT, but that one think may make or break it after 10 yrs.
Verizon unlimited. I'm anywhere from 30 to 80 GB a month depending on how many ROMs I download. ☺
I have the sprint $60.00 unlimited everything, most I have used is 50GB. This month I have used 20GB.

Those of you with double digit data use what do you use it for? I avg maybe 3-5gb a month and can't fathom how to use more. Just curious.

I average about 200 GB per month. Mostly with Netflix and uploading to YouTube. Sprints coverage is one of the worst but I cant go without the unlimited data.
