OK i have scoured the site and found nothing to help me on this so here i go!
I had cm7 on my htc hero and a 3g problem occurred so i tried to change ROMs to resolve the problem. I put Villain 12 zip on my sd card. opened it in Rom Manager and check to clear Dalvic Cache. it seemed to work fine, but when rebooted, it got stuck on the white HTC screen and i cant access my phone! I'm FREAKING OUT!!! Please help!!
From what i have read i havent done anything wrong, i opened it in rom manager i cleared all caches and factor reset (pretty sure all caches) then opened zip. ran it( when i ran it there was something strange in the script. it said copying files then quickly said deleting files and then copying files again. idk if it means something too experienced members) and once it was done hit back and reboot phone. I cant seen any mistakes. This is so frustrating!!

Youre ok. Just relax. If you flashed a cdma hero rom and it booted up youre good. Now you know not to do that again. Pm me if u ever have anymore questions. Itll save you from making 30 threads and 500 posts.
and no u didnt search the sight because theres about a hundred threads about how to restore a bootloop also please dont double post i already answered your question in you other thread
Personally I've noticed that most flashing problems occur from flashing through ROM Manager and from flashing wrong device ROMs. As for the second part I suggest reading. Also do not make multiple threads. My PM box is open for questions.

THANK YOU SOON MUCH!!! especially youdug! the problem ended up being that the rom i was flashing was gsm so it wasn't technically a bootloop and that is why none of the other bootloop threads helped or had any of the same symptoms. I feel like an idiot but i really apreciate the help all of you!!!

I have done many searches trying to find the answer but I haven't found an answer that I thought explained it. Some people have said that the file downloaded incorrectly and I should just re-download the ROM again. I have flashed many ROMs such as Cog, Perception, Phoenix, FF, SN and for every one of my flashes I have gotten one of these errors at least once.
I have flashed back to stock, master cleared, fixed permissions, flashed over ROMs without doing those steps and I still get at least one of these:
E: Can't symlink /system/bin/cat
E: Failure a lin 7:
symlink toolbox SYSTEM:bin/cat
installation aborted
E: Can't chown/mod /system/xbin/su
(no such file or directory)
E: Failure at line 71:
set_perm 0 0 04755 SYSTEM:xbin/su
Installation aborted
I have started putting 3 to 4 .zip files on my phone before I try to flash to save me from having to flash back to stock. I would just like to know if there was any way to do something about this on my end so my flashing time doesn't take an hour or more instead of a few minutes.
Quick question you are using cwm to flash and not stock recovery
[ROM] Precision 3.5 [Kernel] Suckerpunch #51
I am using cwm
Wow dude i have the SAME exactly problem and no one can help me! This all started cause i tried the cog4 rom and my phone has been ****ed ever since! Wont install any roms, all symlink errors, and now i can't even get it to restore a backup. It will successfully restore but upon reboot it just goes back to stock recovery UGH. I just want my phone back! And yes i am doing odin and master clear EVERY SINGLE TIME. Have downloaded each rom file over 10 times each. This is killing me!

I actually just responded to the thread you started before I noticed that you replied to mine. I just suggested that you download some more files but it seems like you have done that already.
If someone with knowledge would just PLEASE read this they can fix this for us. I found someone with the same problem, just different phone. They fixed it! We just need someone with the know-how to convert the directions into how you would do the same things on our phones...

PLEASE PLEASE GUYS HELP
You will need to flash back to stock. Odin 1-Click should do the trick, however you should Master Clear BEFORE you start flashing the stock ROM. The idea is to wipe the card of any inconsistencies in file system structure; sometimes parts can still be in Ext4 (even after 'unlagfixing') when other partitions are back to rfs.
I'd try that. I had a devil of a time with the same issue and after a lot of troubleshooting this worked for me.
Good luck!

I have flashed back to stock with one click odin, 3 button odin, and every odin ever made(exaggerating) probably 40-50 times today . I have master cleared before flashing, after flashing. I have re-partitioned. I have fixed permissions. I have done all of the above in every order imaginable.
I have also tried to install over 5 different roms. This all started whenever i flashed the cog4 that was ORIGINALLY posted yseterday. It had a line 15 error and apparently a wrong kernel. Ever since my phone has never been the same. It must have really ****ed something up.
After reading all night...this is NOT exclusive to the captivate. This has happened to just about every android phone out there. And every topic in existence ends up dying and no one ever gives a solution. Most point to the system partition being full, and it messing up and thats why it's not able to symlink. Others say apps2sd being built in a rom can do that. ONE guy did the rm wipe system thing through adb and got it to work. Please guys HELP PLEASE. My phone is absolutely useless right now being able to run nothing but stock. PLEASE.
I am trying to do a rm -rf /system in an root adb shell in recovery. It always says device is busy. Any ideas!?
Sorry, wrong thread. Ignore me.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SOMEONE PLEASE. i have scoured the entire internet...if someone here can't help then my phone is garbage.
I had a great working rom of CG7. Everything was working great. Then I installed the Battery Icon mod 1.0
I rooted my phone with Z4root, and used the rom manager from clockworks to apply the CyanogenMod 7 rom.
I have ADB installed, but I can never get it to connect to my phone. I was about to give up when I found Z4root. The use of z4root and rom manager made it so simple.
I had it all working great, loving it.....
Then I mess it up with a battery widget.
I performed a backup of my stock rom from within rom manager, and it is saved on the sd card. I can't access it because of being stuck in a loop.
If I pull the card, and use an adapter I can read it on my laptop most likely. But what to read it with, to apply it back to the phone?
I have superoneclick installed, but don't see how to use it either...
But since it appears I half to use ADB and I have been having no luck with it, is there any other options for me to try?
I thought I could use some key command such as home plus power to bring up the commands to read my recovery, wipe data and restore but am not figuring it out.
Maybe I'm just freaking out since I'm going on no sleep, but can anyone please help an eager to learn noob out?
I'd really appreciate it. Apologies ahead of time if this is the wrong sub-forum, but it looked the closest for this topic.
Thanks,
-Joe
dude first of all read the forum rules and watch your language no ones going to help u with that attitude. seconnd if u had bothered to look around first you would realize that there are about 50 threads on how to fix a boot loop.
Sorry for any bad language. I edited it out, sorry.
I had bothered to look around for about an hour, and all threads kept pointing me back to using ADB push commands which I haven't been having much luck with.
Do you know of a better way to fix a boot looping hero? Or can at least point me in the right direction, I can and am willing to learn more, but just keep running into the same answers.
Again, sorry about any language, but if you can spare a link in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
Have you tried pulling the battery and then restarting the phone by holding down the volume key ( down) and the power Burton at the same time? This will put you in the boot loader and if you push the" home" Burton that should put you into recovery. From there, wipe data, cache, system and either restore a backup ( IF you did a nandroid), or flash a new Rom.
Then, reboot.
You need to do lot more reading of different threads because you will see that bootloops are a common occurrence. Just because something is hero cdma does not mean it will work with your particular Rom. Battery mods are built for that specific Rom and that specific build ( like 5/23 aosp/cm7); a battery mod from April probably won't work.
Flashing IS a gateway drug!
Reflash cm7 and don't try the batt mod anymore.

As far as your adb issue. If you tap on my avatar you can find my thread on how to install adb on windows it might help you as you might just be having problem with the htc drivers. Also if you need help with installing it just pm me. And if you haven't figured out your bootloop problem hit me with a pm and if I can help I will. Good luck.
#Root/Hack-Mod_Always*
*hooray*
"holding down the volume key and the power Burton at the same time"
This did the trick this time, phew
This was the menu I was looking for. I reflashed my stock rom and all is well.
Then I just reflashed CM7 and will be avoiding the battery app. Lost all my settings because I hadn't backed up my CM7 rom (doh, live and learn)
Yes I can see that flashing IS a gateway drug! Once you get more comfortable and start understanding it, it is addictive to keep going further and further lol.
I'll keep messing with ADB, as I did get it to see the phone, just it has been 15 years since my days of messing with basically MS-DOS for all my command lines.
I was able to see the phone at one point but keep having trouble getting to the tools directory to start via DOS.
I'm hoping as I read more that maybe there is a better GUI for rooting and modifying other than ADB.
Thanks for the help, now I feel a little better equipped to go further.
Hey everyone new poster to the forums here . Have a question about loosing the stock ROM for my HTC M7 Dev edition. I made the backup but I think when I formatted I formatted more then I should have because when I pull up TWRP recovery mode to restore a backup nothing is listed in the window. However when I go into the internal storage in windows on my computer with the phone connected and look inside HTC One\Internal storage\TWRP\BACKUPS I found a folder called HT34GW9xxxxx and a sub directory with a date on it and it looks like the date that I did the flash in the first place. That folder also has 13 files in it equaling out to 4.25GB in size. So basically what I'm getting at is how come I can see this folder here but not in recovery and even if I could see it in recovery this seems like it's not large enough to be HTC Sense 5.0 according to this thread and the downloads attached to it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2248997&highlight=nandroid
Also speaking of that thread considering the original M7 Dev rom is gone can I use that thread to restore my phone even though I am using TWRP and not clockwork. I'm not the greatest at these type of things, I don't want to brick my phone, and I never have enough time invest in this stuff. If I knew this was going to happy I probably wouldn't have done it in the first place lol.
Thank you in advance and sorry if this has already been talked about, I did a search but I must have skipped over it if it was already out there :\.

Thank you for the help. A follow up question would be is there a place to get someone's previous backup and download it like the link I put up in the previous posts user did. I really don't want to lock the boot loader and I would love to just be able to easily get Cyanogenmod back on the phone easily. Reason being is that right now the Cm camera just isn't up to pay with the Sense camera software and if I go to an event like I am tonight I would like to be able to swap back and fourth.
TWRP and CWM backups aren't compatible with each other. You'd have to flash the relevant recovery to use a corresponding backup.
You still have your backup though. You said as much in your OP. You just need to go into TWRP settings and specify the default location for your backups.
As mentioned above however, you can just flash the official RUU to return to stock
Thanks a ton!
Just wanna say thanks to the both of you for your help. I went with option 2 for now because I want to switch back to CM after the Cardinals MLB game tonight. I never lost the backup and you were right I just had to find the folder. It was weird I didn't see any button to search for a folder kinda odd how TWRP is layer out in that interface. Yet I found the backed up file and took about 10 minutes from start to finish. The device is still unlocked to so I can reflash CM when I'm ready.
A little off topic but does anyone know what the difference between the GSM Cyanogenmod ROMs and the AT&T ROMs are? I have the Dev version but flashed the AT&T version and it ran fine made calls and had no data transfer issues at all.
Ok so I actually started having issues after that last post. What was happening was I kept getting this HTC system update my guess the Camera software update but whatever. So I clicked on the update now and it downloaded like normal then reboot. After it reboot it booted into TWRP recovery well at that point I didn't know what to do so I just went a head and rebooted into System. Well here is where the issue started it said again system update avalible ok great install, same deal it just booted back into TWRP after the download. Back into system I went and again same thing.
At this point I desided to go into TWRP and do a system restore and I thought that worked cause it wasn't notifying me immediately after the launcher loaded to install the update. So I checked for it manually and of course there was one. Tapped on Install it downloaded and asked to reboot so I did...
SAME ISSUE AHHHHGGG! Lol
This will be the end of me haha.
Is there something I'm missing here? Can I not have root access or a a third party boot loader like TWRP or both modifying the system. What am I missing?
Ok thanks again, sorry for the multiple posts I'm just so frustrated at this point.

This my very wild guess. Try flashing stock recovery first and then install the OTA update again. That's just my wild guess I'm not saying it will 100% work.
No luck

Hopefully this helps..
What I did find was this link here...http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc...ml#post2827047 that's where someone else is having the same issue but on Sprint I'm guessing. So that doesn't really apply to me. However a poster further down the thread gave another link to all these "nandroid?" files. I'm not really sure what a nandroid is haha I'm such a noob at this. Basically what they are saying is that unrooting it then i guess somehow putting this "nandroid" file on it somehow. Anyone have any idea on this. I'm terribly sorry for my noobishness but I'm trying to learn all this and it's really frustrating at first..
Here's the link to the nandroid files. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2207874 funny thing is that I actually found that link on Android Central website so that I could come back here and repost about it again heh. Anyways does that look like something that might fix the issue that I'm having?
Even if this file does help I have no idea what to do with it but that first link seemed to have some video's attached to it although I worry about following them because it's for Sprint and I really don't want to brick my phone. (another reason I am being so careful) You pay over 600 dollars for a device you tend to be super careful with anything you do with it.

Sorry about that.
All fixed!!
Ok so I got it. I ended up finding this http://qbking77.com/development/how-to-unrootunbrick-the-htc-one-to-stock-2/
Worked great fixed everything. Linked to the RUU on HTC Dev website also so its official.:good:
So basically if Anyone need to restore to factory from a mess they have made follow this guide it works perfectly and he does an execelent job of describing how to do it in a video he posted step by step.
ok, so i was trying to root my sprint htc one, and everything was going, ok. i unlocked the bootloader simple enough. then i wanted to back up the data, before i tried putting roms on it. well twrp kept saying i only had about 34 mb of space which made no sense since i had formatted it, and only brought back things like contacts and texts. when i checked my phone it said that i had 24gbs. so i couldnt find an answer to this anywhere so while looking through twrp i saw the wipe function. not having seen anything about it, i said, maybe if i reformat it again, itl clear up. so i hit wipe all. well after it was done it only said i had 1.2 gbs, so still confused i went to load my normal os, well i cant. because wiping everything meant the system data the os is on. i spend hours trying to find a fix, as im only able to go between the bootloader and twrp, and i see a sideload option, and after following the steps, i attempt to sideload. everything is going well. Viper looks like its about to install, until at the last second it says install fail. but now i cant even access the recovery menu. literally stuck in the boot loader option. all my contacts and pictures and stuff are backed up, so i have no problem formatting my phone to scratch if it means fixing this, but can anyone point me in the right direction???? i cant find anything on this, ive been searching through this site, and some people with similar issues solve it by sheer luck, but i have no rom back up(since i was trying to do that when i got into this problem) please please help!!!
**edit** i was able to get into twrp by using the recovery steps, though im just back to square 1. is there a guarenteed reliable sideloader that can work?

Do you still have the memory issue? If so, try running a RUU, and see if that fixes your problem.
If not, just use adb sideload to sideload a ROM. Then wipe everything except internal storage and install the ROM normally.
EDIT: Looks like @BD619 ninja'd me XD
BTW sideload very rarely works when you wipe your sdcard.

hey thanks for the reply. i followed the guide and after some effort, everything seemed good, but when i was trying to load 5.03 sense 6 rom, i got to the htc start up, then it defaulted back to the bootloader..i went with the deodex version of the download, should i try the odex? or a different version all together?
and now it doesnt want to boot into recovery mode either! going to try redoing the steps, but i just cant figure out what the problem is
**edit* i cant fix twrp. the title loads, but thats it. endless loop
ok i got it to seemingly work. restoring content now. sat in fron of my pc for 15 hours...not even sure where imat or if i got any closer to rooting..smh..thank you everyone who helped. if anyone comes across this
to get out of the endless cycle of recover/loading screen.. delete your twrp, or whatevs your using. even if you have the latest, just redownload it. worked for me. i guess there is a huge difference between the odex and the deodex.i had figured deodex was a more refined version, but maybe it had more complicated software. in any case, if you are at a point where you dont have a base os, and you make it this far, go with odex, it worked for me. htc is big on back up, so i was more worried about having to scrap my phone then i was regaining data, especially with most of my stuff backed up to google drive. hopefully you guys are careful.
now...about this backup issue i had in the first place. how can i fix the storage issue? i have a 32 gb phone minus partition leaves me with over 24gb..why is it going based off the separate phonememory slot? why cant i change it?
so the fixing was simple- wipe EVERYTHING and install new rom.
But I got so angry i decided to make a post about how crap it was.
I installed the apk, rebooted and got stuck in boot loop.
And i couldnt find the xposer-disabling-something file.
Only advice- dont install, or install on your own responsibility.
