SMS text messages garbled on CM7 - unreadable when it contains accents - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I posted this on the CyanogenMod forums, but no one replied, so I guess I will try there
Just installed CM7.1 a few weeks ago. I barely use SMS messages, however, yesterday I needed to send a couple but the recipients are getting a lot of garbage when they receive my message. It only happens if the text contains an accented word. If I write in plain english, the sms is received just fine.
Attached you will find two screenshots of this problem. One in a HTC Wildfire S, and another in a BlackBerry Pearl.
This never happened on the stock Samsung ROM (XXJVT), so I guess its a CM7-stable bug.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?

;/ same problem ...

I'm having the same problem, I have a galaxy s2 with swype ....

I tried flashing a new radio, and also checking the "split text messages" option but it didn't work.

Which 'accented word', exactly? Maybe the other phones don't support the characters you are trying to send them? Other than that, I can't reproduce this myself, so I'm not entirely sure.

Try with:
- número
- canción
- áéíóú
The fact is, this didn't happen on stock XXJVT, it happens only on CyanogenMod 7 stable. Those are my close friends mobiles, and I have texted them before on stock with no issue at all.
I don't think its a recipient problem. Those accented letters are pretty common in spanish.

can anybody help me with this??
and yes ive tried researching this, for the ones who hate helping ppl without many post counts.

Touch Pro issue - Email format when replying in Hotmail

Hi all,
I have a very annoying quirk with the way the Touch Pro sends a reply to an email. When you type an email and space down to start a new paragraph on a new line it looks fine when you type it but when you send it it pulls all the spaces out of the email making the entire thing one big paragraph. My Jasjam does not do this and I am wondering if anyone has a solution.
The strange thing is that it only does it on replies. If i start a fresh email it will actually send it maintaining the same structure I typed it in. Its the same thing regardless of whether i use the original shipped or cooked 6.1 or 6.5 roms.
Anyones help or ideas would be most welcome. Thanks.
Has nobody noticed this issue? or is it not so annoying?
It happens on all of your devices I would expect as I have seen a couple of devices do it. Its possibly a reg tweak somewhere that could fix it.
I have this problem too and it is annoying, but if you click on Edit sender's message while composing it'll send the whole message in plain text, including your line breaks. You'll lose any HTML formatting in the original message.
Many thanks for the tip. I just tried it and it worked fine. It would be good if MS or HTC or someone really clever here could find a system fix for it.
Thanks again for your help.
No problem. I've no idea why it does that, I had to mess around with it for a while and accidently found that workaround. My Hermes and Kaiser didn't have this problem.

sms text box freezing after replying to msg

is there a fix to this text msg freeze after i reply to it ? i heard its cause of the cache or something on the xperia. could i simply have my msg's on my sotrage card instead of my phone memory? what are some registry tweaks i can use with total commander and if u guys can point me to the right direction for this? i have tried the search but no luck for the text message freeze.
I know this is an old thread and no one replied but I too wonder if there is a fix.
Its annoying when I read/reply to a text message and close that conversation it freezes for like 20s to a minute for me when i try to go out to my text message window. and then from there sometimes it freezes for another 20s to a minute when I try to go to my home screen. I notice this only happens when I read a text or reply to a text to someone that I have a lot of text messages saved from.
If this doesnt make sense I can try and take a video of it and post it
Don't allow a huge build-up of old text messages. The more you have, the longer the pause, it seems. I wish there was a way to automatically delete SMS'es older than 'x' days.
I noticed the problem when I switched to WM6.5.
same problem here
If you are using WM6.5, use the newer version. I've got Christian's 3.904 Clean installed and the pause is almost non-existent compared to older WM6.5 ROMs.
yeah, the newer 6.5s don't have this issue (runnning Valkyrie LEO 5.5 and don't have the slow inbox anymore)
cool, im going to try out one of the new ones. I hate waiting for a minute after replying to a text.

Im trying Christians clean rom and I still have the lag with my text messages. And I know its only with the people who I have a lot of text messages for but I dont think 75-100 text messages is that much.

Like I said, you shouldn't allow a buildup of many messages. Sometimes I wish I could know what the hell a WM phone is doing when we sit there and wait forever after pressing a function.
Which Christian clean ROM are you using. The problem went away when I went to the 3.904. I think he's up to 4.001 now.
Im using the latest one, the 4.001
I guess I have to delete my messages. Kind of sucks though since when I had stock WM6.1 it wasnt like this lol.
I remember a while back someone said its possible to change the save location of your text messages to your Storage card, will that make a difference in that freeze/lag?
Thanks

MMS Issue

I do apologize of there is a better spot for this post but it contains what I think will be some useful information.
Ive seen plenty of posts (not threads) that regard the MMS sending and receiving issued with the various versions of CM. Just today I tried 3 different fresh installs of the CM each having similar issues. My problem being I could not receive any MMS being sent to me. It included a download button that ultimately gave an unsuccessful error.
I know that many people spoke of editing APNs and custom user-agents - none of which ever solved my problem.
Interestingly enough, as per my experience, it all comes down to either there is text included in the MMS. If a picture is sent solo - I will not be able to get it. BUT, if the message includes and kind of text - the message will always appear (the download button never even intervenes in the process).
I'm posting this because I shared the frustration many others have vented. Myself, of course, needing ditry pictures from my GF just to get me through the day .
I hope this adds some insight to the problem - because we all love CM

EDIT: If there is a better place for this type of information, (I am a bit of a noob) please simply direct me - I need only be told once.
Question, are you texting in other other language other than English? I encounter the same issue when sending text in Spanish, I think it has to do with the accentuation of the letters.
Moved to Q&A section
are we sure its a specifically CM issue? Because my stock N1 and my wife's MyTouch Slide usually cant successfully send or receive mms. But that text thing you mentioned is intriguing ill have to test that out

[Q] Any known problem with sms ?

I'm having weird thing regarding sms since I installed Android on my vogue. I was on wm6.1 for a long time and decided to install Android. I tried 3 differents port of Android, I finally ended up with Fresh froyo on a kernel 2.6.25. But on all android version I tried I had the same problem. Some sms came in with what it's look like to me chinese characters. I can receive a readable sms from someone and the next sms he's sending it's in chinese. So my question is there any known problem or issues with sms on android ? I did some search here and I didn't find anything like this. Should I go with another sms application ?
Thanks
The solution is to write SMS without accents at least it was solved for me that way.
Yeah i thought it could be something like that... except I don't have any control on incoming sms
I have to send SMS in Russian beneficiary receives the trash.
Is either a solution?
PS: I assume that the case in the coding but the original client settings is not found. Handtsent does not help, Problem remains.
Sorry for the English, I use google translator
In my case only happened when sending messages with accents but the received SMS well so the problem can be language used in your country.
The boy in russia no idea what caused your problem because not I understood he meant.

Let me explain. I have installed HTC VOGUE Fresh Froyo from 23.01.2011 at Nand. In the system settings chosen language is Russian. Sms recruited normally in Russian. But my sms people get in unreadable encoding. I have an idea that problemma encoded message to be sent, but the settings do not have the choice of encoding.
