[HELP WANTED][Edited] Prospective Developer - GT540 Optimus Android Development

Hi, I am wanting to become a ROM developer.
Where should I start? (I think getting a computer would be a good start, but i'm on this)
What language are roms written in?
I have very basic knowledge of Android app programming with eclipse.
Any help appreciated!

Begin with Soft-modding first.Try creating some of your own Soft-MODs. Experiment with AOSP ROMs. Understand the Android system.
Start off with Android's own guide at http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html
Becoming a ROM developer isn't easy at all.
Regarding Programming languages, as most of the Android source code is in C/C++ try to master them first. Android apps are in JAVA, so you might need to learn it too (not actually required if you're just beginning).

Sorry for being an idiot, but what does a 'Soft Mod' actually involve?

Soft-MOD means you modify an existing ROM (any ROM), add your apps, remove some stock apps, change themes, etc.
To create a Soft-MOD, all you need is Root Explorer. But before that create a backup of your system and data in Recovery (for Precaution). Browse to your system directory, make it Read/Write. Remove any unwanted stock apps (like Dev Tools, Spare parts) or any app you don't want. Just delete the APK. Now add your apps to it. Just paste your app APK file from your SD Card (or from the /data directory) and change permission to rw-r--r--
After applying all the changes, reboot your Phone into Recovery and create another Backup (your Soft-MOD with your data), Wipe data/Factory Reset. Turn On your phone to check whether everything is working or not. Reboot into Recovery. Again Wipe Data/Factory Reset. Again Backup everything. This backup which you'll create is your actual Soft-MOD.
Copy it into your computer and upload it. Restore your system to the second backup.
This is just a basic way of Soft-MODing. Another way is to use DsiXDA's kitchen but it's bit advanced. Best of Luck!

the easiest is to do it with a cyanogenmod e.g muraiks rc5
DO A FULL NANDROID BACKUP FIRST
#
it might be that the kitchen sais its full just wait some time..
-first u should do all mods u like
-go on the bar to file upload and do either cm7 theme (recommended!!!)and upload a theme (e.g androidian, u find it in /system/app via rootexplorer, copy, not move !!! to sd card and transfer it to PC and upload)
or system files and upload framework-res.apk from the ROM and systemui.apk if you use gingerbread ROM, you find them via root explorer(copy, not move !!!to sd, then to PC):
/system/framework/framework-res.apk
/system/app/systemui.apk ( i think)
then u go to summary and submit your work.
u will get a uotfile.zip after a quarter of time .#
this one you install via clockworkmod (recommended :3.x.x.x)
if you still have questions just ask

Theme-Porter [v1.0] [Any Firmware / Rom Compatible] [WINDOWS]

Heres a script that ports your themes from firmware to firmware, rom to rom.
How it works:
- Looks through app/framework folder for apks that exist in new/old rom
- Then extracts pngs from those apks
- Then deletes mismatching pngs
- Repacks old themes pngs into new rom
- Done
Note: Benefit of this method is that you could literally port a donut theme to a froyo rom because it only copies images that exist in the new rom, and none that don't.
Betas are spread out through-out the thread (they provide a lot more features)
Instructions:
- Download zip
- Extract zip
- Place old framework/app in old folder (Rom that has the theme)
- Place new framework/app in new folder (Rom u want to port it to)
- Run batch script
- The new folder is now themed
Requirements: Windows environment
Improvements:
- Dependant on demand for this script.
NOTE: For now u can only transfer themes from 2.0+ to 2.0+ roms and pre 2.0 to pre 2.0 roms. Big reason is because of the mdpi folders whereas before there was only one. Will implement it as soon as possible.
Beta 3 Download - http://www.multiupload.com/62I7MXV620
amazing concept... and most likely awesome work like your others.. keep them coming!
definitely gonna give this a try .....
thanks
has anyone actually tried this?
I would try it myself but i don't have the time atm.
Had a minor hiccup in my script , fixed/uploaded.

I just tested this script by doing the following :
1. adb pulled /system/app and /system/framework from my phone into the old folder
2. place cm6 into new folder
3. Ran script
4. Pushed files to phone and it works perfectly
Sorry. I'm relatively new to this, so how do I get the framework/app?

Well u can either extract app/framework from ur theme's update.zip or pull it from ur phone by doing
adb pull /system/app <drag app folder from theme-porter folder here>
adb pull /system/framework <drag framework folder from theme-porter folder here>
HOLY SHIZEN!
now if u can possibly implement the transformation of HDPI to MDPI id pay u at least 20-30 bucks for that..
in the interim..thank u very much for your contribution!

Hmm interesting idea. Certainly possible, however not all images are to be resized equally, some more than others. I'll look into it, can't promise though
Edit: Very hard to do, basically u'll have to have a list of image filenames where each must be noted as to what resolution they must be on a mdpi device.
im sort of new to this. i have a question.
will this work if im using an update.zip theme in the old folder
and a clean rom in the new folder?
ex.
i wanna port the Elegance Theme for SuperD for Dream
to
SuperE for Dream.
and another question.
if this is how it will work
can i then create an update.zip out of what comes from the new folder?

As i said i'll improve it if ppl find this script to be useful, i'll base it on # of downloads lol
For now u'll have to extract the framework and app folder from elegance theme for dream into old folder and extract framework and app folder from super e to new folder. Then run script, once done ur new folder's stuff will be themed.
do i have to then push the files from the new folder over or can i use your create update.zip script and flash the new themed apps and framework?

Yes u can do that or u can just push the files. Yea an update to this will prolly have an option to make the new folder into an update.zip.
thanks man. the combinations of these 2 scripts will help me to make a rom how i want it.

Ok so the # of downloads have reached my defintion of *in demand*
So these are the changes im thinkin of bringing, feel free to make suggestions.
- Make the "new folder" into an update.zip once the script has run through its paces
- Have an option to pull app/framework directly from ur phone
Those are the only 2 i can see as being useful, if anymore let me know.
crossing platforms doesnt work.
tried to move the celadon theme for CM 5.0.7 (which is android 2.1)
to SuperD 1.11 (which is android 1.6)
i also tried transfering Elegance for SuperD 1.11
to SuperE 1.0.3
the fonts transfered. nothing else did.
but i did successfully transfer the celadon theme for CM 5.0.7
to SuperE 1.0.3

RtL languages (Arabic) for 2.1-2.2-2.3 cm7

Hi everybody ..
Arabic users always want to use wonderful Roms like CM7 and other Roms but they stop with no Arabic support ..
her the solution
thanks to madmack
http://blog.devasque.com/?page_id=11
I try it .. and it was perfect i use it with cm7 and iceandfire ..
it was work perfect.. just apply patch to framework.jar .. and use libwebcore.so all will found in zip file there
for those can't open link .. steps of arabic shaping
framework.jar takes care of shaping texts in android on all texts except Gmail and the browser.
Note: Please perform a nandroid backup of your system before attempting to use this patch.
Requirements:
Your device needs to be rooted.
Your Android version is 2.1 or newer
Your ROM needs to be deodexed. To find out if your installed ROM is deodexed, navigate to /system/framework on your phone. If you see a file called framework.odex then this patch will NOT work for you.
Steps to apply the patch:
1. Download the patch below and extract it to a folder on your computer.
2. Pull /system/framework/framework.jar from your phone and place it in the subfolder framework that you extracted in step 1
3. Double click on commands.exe. Do not close the black cmd screens that will pop up. Once the patch is done, you should get a patched framework.jar in the subfolder generated
Verify that the generated framework.jar is bigger than the original framework.jar that you pulled from your device. It should be about 1MB larger.
4. In subfolder generated: Place the generated framework.jar in your phone in /system/framework and reboot
I’ve also included the Aljazeera fonts in fonts. You can place these in /system/fonts and reboot
Sometimes permissions and xml data doesn’t get updated correctly resulting in corrupted data entries. If you receive a bunch of Force Closes after a reboot, you’ll need to Factory Reset.
Note: This will not shape the letters in Gmail and the Browser correctly. If you want this, you’ll need to get the appropriate libwebcore.so for your system. Each Android device and ROM will need a separate one, therefore I’m not including one in this post to avoid confusion.

Thank you for putting this widely open to the international community.
All the credits to our friend Madmack for the great work.
I've been using this in Arabaizing all the goodies here & hope to find a way for Odex systems..
I hope developer use the patch to support arabic in there great roms here
thanx alot for this post. it is realy helpful.
I have a question, or two ..
is the CM7 a rom for Froyo or Gingerbread??
I am still using the Official Eclair and I am planning to root my phone. if you would list the way to Upgrade the Milestone to CM7 from scratch and then Install Arabic..

CM7 is GB AOSP with Moto Froyo kernel.
IF you want to upgrade to CM7 procedure would be as follows.
Flash GOT 2.2.1 sbf
Apply CM7
Apply your Arabic patch.
thnx alot sileshn ,,
do u recommend the CM7? or an earlier Rom? the CM6?
Can't we just copy-paste your Framework.jar file using root explorer, like with libwebcore.so?
Thank u very much

[SOFT-MOD]Swiftdroid Triumph v2.0

SOFT-MOD Swiftdroid Triumph
Please don't ask for ETA-s, I'm only 16 I have to study a lot and you know things like that...
Credits go to all XDA devs, who make our phones more beautiful. If you see your theme, app, rom, mod or something in my soft-mod, don't worry. I don't steal anything, I appreciate all devs for their awesome work!
ICS Theme: AChep XDA Link
VERSION 2.0 RELEASED!
I'm a beginner at modding, and deving, but I'm trying to get better and better
I'm learning C++ now, so hopefully I will be a dev sometime, and I'd also like to learn about theming when I have free time.
I accept any kind of help, comment, pm me if you have suggestions
This SOFT-MOD is based on Mur4ik's SwiftDroid 2.0 ASIS.
The base ROM can change anytime, if I find something better.
I used the same kernel and system now. I recommend to use 256MB Swap, swap recognizition working in init.d scripts, swappiness is set to 30 by default.
I also recommend to set your sys part. size to around 150MB.
I themed it to the closest feeling of Ice Cream Sandwich.
Installation:
Just put the .zip file anywhere you want on your SD card, then go to CWM and just flash it as a .zip file. I recommend to wipe everything before you install.
I'm not responsible if you brick your phone!
Download:
Swiftdroid Triumph v2.0 Mirror
Swiftdroid Triumph v1.0 Mirror
PowerAmp 2.0 Beta 3: Mirror
Weather widget from Optimus 2X: Mirror
I attached PowerAmp separately, because it fc-s if put to system.(maybe because its beta) I also attached the Weather Widget from 2X because it's huge (11mb) and I want to keep the system part size as small as possible.
Hints:
If you want to change your lockscreens background wallpaper just go to Go Launcher Settings->Theme Settings->Go Locker->There you can change the wallpaper.

[THEME] Stock LG UI Theme for Marvel ROM (+some apps)

Hello everyone,
After a few days working with gabwerkz and N00BY0815 in this thread we have managed to create a theme for the Marvel (v4) ROM. It's the stock LG theme. Some icons can't be replaced but well, most of the appearence is stock.
Downloads:
This is supposed to have 2 versions. Choose just one of them.
Version 1 (Theme) - gabwerkz:
http://www.mediafire.com/?mejgaze39nar65f
Version 2 (Theme + Launcher + Some Stock Widgets) - VictorMun:
http://www.mediafire.com/?1zjfpn323l85z7kMirror: http://min.us/mvv3NQ1gG#1o
Add-On - DroidSansFont (Stock font):
http://www.mediafire.com/?09l3ddx9h55dfpoMirror: http://min.us/mvv3NQ1gG#2o
Add-On -Stock Music App:
http://www.mediafire.com/?0jk2wlsw43a52ddMirror: http://min.us/mAYHjXfl4
Installation:
Boot into recovery
Go to Advanced
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Go back to the main menu
Choose Install Zip from SDCard
Reboot
Issues:
Not every widget could be restored because some of them won't work
If you want to install the Add-Ons, it's better if you install them after flashing the theme.
Installing the Stock Music App won't remove the Google Music App included in the ROM.

No modification for the theme. Just flash the stock apps for that ROM. ask for a flashable stock deodexed apps from the cooker. I believe it's V20N. Also, if you have xanadus repacked V20N, just replace the apk's inside the zip before flashing. That way, you have LG's default/unthemed apk's/UI.
HE also will need framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk from a stock ROM, right?

Yep, stock apk's. no theming required. but you will loose animations for example or any mods from the apk's.

I'll try, thanks
EDIT: Nope, didn't work :S
However, it is weird because I've the buttons and all from the stock ROM... so I don't really know where the problem may be. I even used the UOT kitchen (to try a random setup) with Marvel's framework-res.apk and the 20n system-ui.apk but it still fails at showing the status bar. Therefore I believe it's related to the system-ui.apk.
From which ROM did you take the System and framework files? B or N? Cause this might also be the cause... Zeus is a v20B ROM, at least the higher versions, which I guess you are using. And if you take the files from a V20N ROM, there might come up a bug, like not showing statusbar... You also might DieDerik, how he solved it, cause he also had the same problem, or gabwerkz might be the PRO on this
Edit, just read the first post again and you use Marvel... This is based on V20N AFAIK, did you use V20B files then maybe? You might also request Marvel, to give you his original files, I guess he will help you out, when he has got some free time
Edit 2: Did you use deodexed files? This might also be the cause...
NOOBY hit the bullseye on that.
but hmmm, he said he used SystemUI of V20N. Now be sure it's deodexed and permissions are correct.
Oh and UOT somehow already left a lot of guys here with a missing status bar. So first try to get the stock statusbar and after you try to mod it again, then you ll at least know, where you can find the bug. Because different files + mods are two possible sources of bugs...
And if you want gabwerkz, you can provide him with a zip, to flash the files + permissions, so he shouldnt have problems with it
Oh I remeber now G*damnit. NOOBY is right, UOT sometimes won't show your statusbar. I've experienced it. If it was from a different Version (V20b) chances are it won't boot for some apk's.
Tell me what apk's you need or themed apk's that you don't want...?/

Thank you guys for your help. I've been using the 20n version that is included in the 20n repackaged. Permissions are correct (as the other system apps). I really wonder where the mistake may be... I'll ask the developer, in case he is able/willing to help.

I don't think it's a stolen idea. When my friend bought a Lumia 710 I tried making my phone look like WP7 too. And that was probably before your ROM was announced.
