funny, i've been following these forums for quite a while now, but have never needed to post before. first off, thanks so much to mtmichaelson, thecubed, and everyone else for all the hard work you all have put into this phone. i'd have abandoned it long ago without your work. My question is a bit of an odd one, though not too bad i suppose. I, like everyone else, have been eagerly awaiting gingerbread, but of course it was released while i'm over in england for my gmas 80th birthday. Right now i'm running revolt 1.5 so i know i ahve to downgrade etc, but i was curious if i could even recieve the ota update here (wifi only)? and beyond that, would i get stuck in the activating sim card screen once updated if i've no service? of course england is a gsm country, so i wouldn't be able to contact verizon's regular servers... I know i should probably just wait until i return home, i'm just so eager.
Thanks again everyone

Quite new to all this and have spent time with search, so please don't shout at me!
I still own a Tytn which I've been very happy with speed wise. Orange have sent me a Tytn ii now which i think is a great machine, however the lag and speed issues are really getting to me now. I understand that Orange are not the best when it comes to customising these phones and as a result is one of the main reasons it runs so slow. I spoke to Orange tech today and they said i wouldn't invalidate my warranty if i changed the ROM. Will it get this phone moving to a usable speed? I love the functions of this phone (GPS, keyboards better, BRIGHT screen! etc..) but the speed is taking the p*#s now.If anybody can recommend a good ROM (?) that would be great. Any help gratefully received.
hi and welcome to the forums. you can start your upgrading by reading through this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282
i can tell you that basically any cooked rom will give you a speed improvementover a shipped rom. i'm not gonna give any suggestions, there's just too many different personal preferences when it comes to choosing a rom, just read through this and the upgrading forums....you will see many opinions, probably someone whould even post their opinion here too. good luck

I very much doubt that! I bet they wouldn't put that in writing.
Afaik orange don't release rom updates and how could they support your device with some other rom on it?
Either way, I couldn't care less about it voiding the warranty, the stock orange rom is pants. I've never looked back since flashing a cooked rom.
As already mentioned, there are too many roms to say which is the best, it's a personal thing.
I personally like Duttys v4 (eek! looks as sig and realizes its waaay out of date, been running v4 for a while now), its quick, reliable and just generally feels nice.

I asked the chap today and he said "because you had the phone direct from Orange we would repair or replace even if customised" I did say " are you SURE about that and he said yes. Having said that, every time i speak to them about anything they contradict each other! Ive been with them a long time and because I'm a heavy user they generally treat me right. I hope he was right, i did ask him for his name and i logged the time of call so hopefully if it does screw up I've got some comeback. Thanks for the quick replies.

There is a big jump from "customisation" which to them probably means not using the crappy orange home to flashing a new rom.
my 2p worth.
I specifically said i want to change the ROM. He said OK. Sod it, its next to useless anyway with their crap software. If i brick it I'll "accidentally" drop it into the bath and let my home insurance get me a new one.

Just be sure to read and sock in all of the guides, then theres very little chance of bricking it
Well, I took the plunge, but as a nessesity rather than option.
I'm with TMobile and they wanted £180 for the upgrade plus put up my tariff £10 per month (was on 25% for life plus £10 loyalty discount) so effectively upgrade would cost £320.
Got a new Orange 12 mnth contract and phone for £70. Other half now has 12 month orange contract sim rather than PAYG, and I followed the sim unlock and flashed Duttys 6.1 ROM with 3 days of getting the phone. Orange phone looks much better than Vario 3 too.
Just follow the instructions to the letter and you won't look back!
Cheers for everyone's help! Much appreciated. Now, does anyone know why slide to unlock pretty much messes my phone up???!!! Orange ROM causing the problem?? I get the main screen but the slider doesn't slide and then i just get a blank screen!
If you are up for flashing a new rom... then don't muck about with applications yet.
Read up. Flash the correct SPL, then choose a rom, flash it (and simunlock if its a 6.1 rom as you need a 6.1 compatible radio) and then use it for a couple of days and see what you like.
If you dont like the new rom - flash another... It can become quite addictive!
Just got this OTA update today, was around 686Kb i think.
Anyone else got it, spotted any changes?
I had expected one recently after reading about the "one-click root" app and how a patch was already being worked on.
Do we think it was just that?
The "More Info" of the update mentioned something about including a number of small changes, dependant on location, but nothing about security patches.
It's very cold here in the "I Haven't Rooted" section.
I only did it 2 days ago - its not toooo late to join the dark side, perhaps this is a 1 click fix and the final update promised
Yea most people here have root. U should root. Its the only way ur g1 can reach its full potential. Srry for the spelling lol
Other than being able to make the notification bar black instead of white (which I really would like), there really isn't much I'd bother rooting for at this point in time... I don't have time to search through hundreds of ROMs to find one on which everything works perfectly for me, and I kinda like getting my OTA updates.
When the G1 is officially cast aside from updates and things, I'll definitely do it, but (and I know it's crazy talk to say this around here) for now I'm not really that bothered!
Unless anyone wants to convince me otherwise?
well think about it this way. all those times where you say "damn i wish tmobile would update this already" or "why didnt this come with the phone??" or "hurry up damn phone!"
...
if you root, theres a 99% chance you'll never say any of that again
least in my experience. i just rooted yesterday, and i love it!
i would like to know exactly whats fixed in this as the uk seem to get security updates 1st, possibly because we didnt have to wait aslong for cupcake.
And on the rooting point, go for cm4.0.1 recovery 1.4 there you go, they are the ones right for you

Becuse some sites like 4Shared do not allow files larger than 100 Megs
Talked to an att rep. and was told that the main problem is their network. He said its the same problem they have with the Iphone 3GS that it wasnt configured in their system yet and everyone who bought one with the new mms feature couldnt use it and they were getting calls nonstop. He also said that as soon as they release the fortress that the problems will be resolved. The only other thing I can think to do is find out how to get the system to recognize the touch pro 2 as a fuse mabey by replacing some rom files or OS files but dont have the know how to do so. I have tried cooking in the past on the fuse and tilt but every time I try to get something done Something else gets in the way like the wife or the baby or customers or fixing someones computer...... A never ending cycle of life on a daily basis. A good general breakdown of ROM cooking would be greatly appreciated. Like step by step without anything left out and an explination on what everthing does and how it works and changes a rom tweaks and all. Still waiting for someone to post a all encompassing tutorial........ Will pay for this advice, Hint Hint If I had the time Id do it but Business has to come before fun o r me and my family would be living in a shack.

I was able to send MMS fine before I flashed Manilla 2.5. So lemme get this right, its no manilla 2.5 its at&t?
Thats what Im thinking, And now that you mention it, it probably is something to do with the connection between 2.5/2.6 and the os on the device. The reps I usually talk to are regular not tech support because its a little harder to get the tech guys to stay on the phone chatting after they troubleshoot your problem unless you get a talkative one, Like I said Im no chef and it will probably get worked out in future releases of 2.5 and 2.6, I stick with 2.6 even with all the bugs mainly so Im aware of exactly how it works when a 100% working version comes out and the process of the changes are cool and gives me a reason to keep flashing my phone
Hi there!
I finally got my N1 today. Imediately set up the SDK and started "working"...
One of the first things i tried today was installing the froyo update. Didn't get it to work.
The problem seems to be that my N1's build version is EPF30, which seem to be a "special" build for the german/european N1s.
Does anybody know when the Froyo will be available as an OTA update? I tried a manual checkin and update check so far ...
I know there IS a workaround which includes rooting and flashing an older stock rom, but I dont want to root it right now.
Thanks so far...
DerSeppel
Yeah, because searching for an answer in one of the million existing Froyo threads would have been hard.
There is no answer. It will be out when it's ready.
It will be out on 14 June to steal Apple's thunder.
In fact, I did search the forums before posting.
What I didnt quite understand was, IS Froyo already being rolled out or not?
It's apparently going through "final testing" so probably end of this week or next week.
It's being RC tested internally, not being pushed out to consumers yet.
Sounds good ... are there any experiences with the rollout duration?
How long might one have to wait to be scheduled for the OTA in the worst case?
I want to start using the C2DM service which requires 2.2 at least.
moved to q&a
i have a very strong feeling that it just might be released on the same day as the new iPhone.
google may just try and steal some of apple's thunder on that day.
No point in even attempting a release same day as the iPhone release. The news will just get buried.
Sorry if this has been asked and talked about before but haven't been able to find anything. I have contacted both att and samsung on the upgrade/update for the att us Captivate. I have contacted att twice and samsung 1 time. It seems that both times att responded they had to contact samsung. So i'm beging to think the us update is all samsung. I'm sure this is old news but now to my question. And maybe someone can answer it. How big of a diffrence is there between the US and Canada phones? What i'm not understanding is how one has the update and the other doesn't if there isn't any diffrence. My thought is maybe with alot of problems that i have heard about with Rogers upgrade that samsung is trying to weed out problems before releasing to us. This last email i got back from ATT sounds like they don't have a clue on whats going on. but the one from Samsung was sure of the update just couldn't give a time frame. Thanks for reading and again am sorry if this has been talked about before, also hope i'm posting it in the right place.
I live in canada, updated to froyo didnt experience any problems aside from the browser memory leak issue... but thats it

Samsungs roll in the update is pretty much over they did their part and sent working code to at&t.from my understanding at&t is simple playing the blame game.
I am not surprised that they seem to know nothing.its a big company with a large number of devices they can't know all the details about all of them. We well know when we know.I don't expect it for another month or so. not like we need it anyway with all of the great roms out there
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Each has its own carrier specific customization to do. For example, with Rogers 2.2, wi-fi tether is linked to a Rogers specific apk so that it can check your Rogers account (to make sure you paid for tethering) before it let you do it.
Since AT&T won't have official Android Mobile HotSpot tethering out until Feb 13, it makes sense that Captivate won't see 2.2 update until after that (so that it can contain AT&T specific tethering check app).
So, it is not as simply as who to blame. Each carrier has different demands and feature request. Samsung has to implement those demanded features then release to carrier for testing.
Thanks...
Answered a few things i had questions on. I know theres a bunch of roms out and good things can happen but i'm also aware of the bad things with modin the phone with custom roms. I did my motorola backflip with sorta no problems but when i did run into problems it was easy enuf to reflash it sounds like theres alot more to flashing a rom to it then just rooting and flashing. So think i will wait a bit longer. If it comes down to things will try my hand at the roms.
