I just got my phone back in September. I had known about rooting for quite a while and was interested in doing it to my phone and trying out some custom ROMs.
However, everywhere I look there seems to be many different ways to root. Superoneclick, Odin, and others. I just want to know how to go about this and also if it is possible to go back to the stock Samsung ROM and unroot if I don't like it. The main ROM I am considering is Cyanogenmod 7.1 as they just added official support for my device, but if there are any other good ones, let me know.
Phone info (I have the Bell I9000M, but it's on Virgin Mobile):
Model #: GT-I9000M
Firmware version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9000UGKG3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9000UGKG3
[email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.GKG3
Thanks for any help you can provide!
Read the stickies mate. All information that you seek is hidden in the stickies that you scrolled past to post your thread.....
I would NOT entertain attempting to flash cm7 until you know what you are doing.
You will get little sympathy for a thread such as "i've just tried to install cm7, now I've fxxked my phone and don't know what to do..... "
Get yourself odin and eclair jm9 from samfirmware.com - for when things go very wrong, then read, read, read.

I looked through the stickied topics as well as several other posts on sites such as Android Forums before making this post. The massive How-to guide in the stickied topics seems to be primarily about rooting on 2.1 or 2.2, and I am on 2.3.
I was simply confused about the different methods of how to root, and made this post for clarification. I may be new to this but I do know things from all the forum topics and guides I have read so far.
What I don't know is which method works best for my device, and what I should be using to root in the first place. I have looked into Superoneclick and know that it works for the I9000, but don't know if it could work for mine. I figured someone here could answer that.
All I'm asking for is a few answers to the questions I have. Thanks.

To be honest, the i9000 and the i9000m are very similar devices. In fact, they're practically the same. For the most part, things that will work for the i9000 will work just fine for your device.
Definitely start with a custom samsung rom. Flash a custom kernel with odin, you have root. Super easy and almost idiot proof.
Back your **** up! Get titanium backup from the market and back up all your user apps. Take your time and do it right. Then go into recovery and do a backup from there.
Try a few roms out to get the feel for it. Unless your phone spews black smoke it is likely fixable. You will likely mess something up at some point, we all do at one time or another, but there are guides to walk you through getting back to square one.
Good luck.

Any other tips or suggestions? I can't find any rooting guides that are specific to my device. How do I go about installing Cyanogenmod after I root?

Generally, if it works for the i9000, it will work for the i9000m.

Yep, no problem. It's pretty confusing at first, especially since there are so many versions of the Samsung Galaxy S. The i9000 and the i9000m are quite similar; the Vibrant, Captivate, etc. are not. Feel free to use ROMs for the i9000 on your i9000m, unless it specifically says not to. But do not attempt to use anything for the other devices, such as flashing their firmware. That will just mess up your device. Oddly enough, when I got my i9000m, the box clearly said "Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant" on it—in multiple places. So without thinking, I flashed a Vibrant ROM onto my device. That gave me a whole lot of trouble and I couldn't figure out why. It wasn't until later that I realized the barcode sticker on the box had the model listed as "i9000m". Why they would do this, I have no idea. But I can see how things get confusing with all the different models.
Anways, good luck! And have fun flashing.
The Bell Vibrant (i9000m) is different than the T-Mobile Vibrant (which is also called the i9000m). That being said, the Bell Vibrant is compatible with almost all (if not all) of the International model's (i9000) firmware.
If you just want to root for now, I would recommend flashing Chainfire's kernal since it's close to the stock kernal and is a pretty good first step until you get the hang of this whole custom ROM stuff.

I have a Bell GT-I9000m that I've unlocked to use it on Rogers network.
At first, I did have problems. Didn't have a phone for a day, cause i installed an app called battery percentage something to my unrooted I9000m that soft bricked my phone. Then I really started getting into rooting. My warrenty was over and already using the phone with another wireless provider.
I still don't completely understand how all things works but I have got around. Tried many ROMs.
And I after using custom rom, I have installed previous stock rom(such as a previous froyo rom) then successfully able to update with Kies (only 1 time though, cannot remember which stock rom ive used). Anyways, it is possible to go back to exact stock state you've previsously had after installing a custom rom.
What i do:
1. Look for a custom rom that i like (such as CM7.1, darky rom, simplicity) in "Galaxy S I9000 Android Development" section. There should be a stick that has the list of ROMs or seperate posts with the latest ROMs. Download that ROM.
2. Read up on it. It will say which stock rom it is built from or say which stock rom you should install before installing the custom rom (i.e., 2.3.4jvr, 2.3.5jvt and such)
3. Find that stock rom. There are posts in the forum that says stock rom collection. Find the specified rom with Sbl(i.e., jvt, jvr)
4. Reboot ur phone into recovery mode (if u are coming from a stock rom, it will say 3e recovery). Do factory reset and clear cache (at this point, you should've backed up ur personal files already)
5. Reboot into Download mode(hold Home+volume down+power as you turn on the device). Run "Odin" on ur PC. If you unzip the stock rom file, it should contain 3 different files PDA, Phone, CSC.(Do not much understand this part, just following instruction. From what I understand PDA is like the OS?(like Windows?), Phone is the modem for like dialing, 3G connections and such? and CSC? no idea)
6. Put those 3 files accordingly into the odin and put "s1_odin_2010512.pit" file into the "PIT" section.(when you do this "Re-Partition" would automatically get cheched. Leave it as it is checked)
7. Connect your "I9000m" device with USB. PC will recognize your device. Click "Start". It will start doing stuff to your phone.
8. Find the Kernel that will root your device. Go to "Galaxy S I9000 Android Development". There's a sticky called "SGS - 2.3.4 Ginger Bread Custom Roms & Kernels). Scroll down and you will see the list of Kernels (i.e., CF-Root, Semaphore, Blockbuster and such. so far, I've only tried CF and semaphore, which worked fine for me). Click on one of them and find the one that matches the stock rom that you've install(stock jvr -> CF-Root-XX-OXA-JVR). Download that and unzip it.
9. Reboot your phone into Download moad again(hold Home+volume down+power as you turn on the device). Open "Odin" agian. This time only load the ".tar" file that was contained the Kernel that you've downloaded, nothing else. Connect your phone. Click on "Start". This will also do stuff to your phone. Again reboot into the "Recovery Mode". Do "Factory Reset" and "Clear Cache"
10. After Rebooting you will have "Superuser" app installed on your phone, if not download it from the marekt. Now, you are rooted.
11. For Semaphore and CF-Root, there's CWM or semaphore app, that let's me to reboot into CWM recovery mode (not the original 3e recovery).
12. Boot your phone Normally and Copy the Cumtom ROM file(.zip) onto your phone(has to be in the "internal SD", your "external SD" is not recognized in the recovery mode).
13. Boot into CWM recovery mode.
14. Go down using "volume down" button to "install zip from sdcard". Press "power" to select.
15. Again use "volume down" to "choose zip from sdcard". Press "Power" to select.
16. You will see the custom ROM file(.zip). Go down to the .zip file (i.e., "Simply_Honey_5.1_LightCWM.zip"). Press "Power". This will start doing stuff to your phone for awhile and boot after will take awhile as well.
17. Once you are successfully boot into the phone, it will ask you to set-up stuff(wifi, google account). Do all that. Now you are basically done.
18. My extra step. Reboot into "Download mode". Download the Stock "UGKG3" rom. Unzip it. Open "Odin". Load only "Phone" file into the odin from "UGKG3" ROM. Then click "Start"
*If you are gonna attempt to follow my steps, "DO IT OWN YOUR OWN RISK"
But from my experience, it is pretty safe procedure and you could go back to Samsung Stock state.
I've went through a lot of ROMs in a very short period of time. Had ROMs with random Reboot problem, roboot problem when playing games and cell signal pick-up problem. From my experience so far, ran into some bad lucks with the signal problem with the most recent JVT rom, even with stock. JVR was okay with the signal, but I flash the phone with "UGKG3" modem. Not entirely sure does it does affect the phone, just feel like doing it since it's for specifically i9000m. LOL.
Like the other guy said. If it works for I9000, it will most-likely work for I9000m.
Currently on "Simply Honey 5.1" 2.3.4jvs

Hi, sorry to resurrect a dead thread but I have a question.
I decided to try rooting my phone a while back with SuperOneClick, and it worked. However, I'm not sure what to do here with regards to ROM Manager. Would it work if I tried to flash ClockworkMod Recovery through it, and then flash CyanogenMod?
I wish all this wasn't so confusing.
Check here to find out what to do with the ROM Manager:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
It should be near the bottom of the page
Edit: Oops, sorry missed some later threads. Disregard post.

Hi guys,
Im thinking of flasing a custom rom using odin.
Im running stock froyo 2.2.
PDA: I9000XWJPA
PHONE: I9000XXJPP
CSC: I9000XEEJP4
My phone is rooted and lag fixed. I understand that i need to remove the lag fix before and flash.
I updated to this using the registry hack. My questions are as follows...
1) Can i flash a custom rom from stock 2.2 or do i need to firstly flash a kernal with recovery 2e and then flash a custom rom?
2) Am i right in thinking that the PDA is the right bit to be looking at i.e when people say this rom is usable with JPA / JPO etc. The phone and CSC are not important when flashing a custom rom ( but still needed obviously )
3) If by some miracle of god we ever do get 2.3 and i flash back to stock Froyo via odin using a rom from samfirmware.com, will kies recognise my phone? Or will i forever be destined to flash "unofficially" through odin.
4) Looking at the PDA etc given above can anybody recommend a good rom to flash with gingerbread theme and apps. ( i keep seeing Darky's rom popping up in conversations ) and also have a link to it if you would be so kind. Im not lazy but theres so many roms all over i want to make sure i get the right one.
5) Once i have recovery 2e can i flash future roms over the top using rom mananger by clockworkmods and not have to go through odin? Or how does that work?
If i could get some clear answers to the above that would be great.
Yes i am a newbie at this but i am confident that i understand the basics, its just a couple of things above that i want clearing up before i proceed.
I know how to use odin correctly. ( close kies first / make sure odin opened before plugging in phone etc. )
P.S Yes i have 3 button recovery and download mode.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and a big thank you to any body that takes the time to respond with help.
Any body that can help?
dude i feel your pain. i've rooted and installed custom roms on two other phones, most recent the HTC Desire Z. and it was quite a nightmare to just start off to know what the first step is, there are soo many different guides its hard to know which is what and what has now been superceeded by something else!
now i'm trying to get a custom rom on my galaxy S too, but really having a hard time understanding everything becuase guides and stuff are so different for different roms, gets confusing and dont know which one is for me!
my phone is already rooted, i have firmware 2.1-update1, i know i have voodoo lagfix somewhere installed. but my base band version is I9000XXJM4, which i hav'nt seen in any guide! where did you get your seperate PDA, PHONE, CSC info from?
sorry i could'nt help you and i justed added a bunch more questions to mix
also how did you manage to get Clockwork Recovery on your phone? i have recovery 2e atm. i downloaded Rom manager from the market and tried installing Clockwork rewcovery, but first it would not even download. then i tried next day and it downloaded it through rom manager. but i dont think it installed it. i went into recovery mode and then it tried to auto-install clockwork recovery in recovery mode! but it just hanged at zero status bar for like 20 mins. i turned the phone off and on, went back into recovery mode and it was still recovery 2e, how do i get clockwork recovery to flash as the recovery mode?
Type *#1234#into your dial pad and it will come up. If I'm right I believe that 2.1 is more simple to flash over than 2.2 which is the bit that's confusing me.
I believe that you would need to flash a new kernel with recovery 2e and then flash a new Rom over the top.
I'm a but confused though as to weather or not I would need to flash back to 2.1 and then do a couple more flashes to get the job done.
Can some one please clear this up.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
1. You don't need to have 2.1 rom to flash, since you'll be able to do all the flashing using Odin and download mode. Just flash a kernel, using odin, that has clockworkmod integrated, and you'll be able to flash most roms and kernels with the clockworkmod.
Speemod kernel is a great kernel, and has clockworkmod included.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
2. PDA is the rom part. CSC is important when using stock roms. I think that custom roms have CSC included in them.
3. You'll always be able to flash with Kies by using the Kies Registry Hack or by flashing a stock rom through odin. Kies will recognise your phone even if you are on a custom rom, but I'm not sure if it'll flash your phone.
4. I prefer Docs Ultra Slim roms because it's light, and you can customize them however you want. Darky's rom is a good option if you want all the features of a stock rom, and more. I use a Gingerbread theme with Doc's rom.
Links,
Darky's: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
Doc's: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
Both can be installed through ClockWorkMod
5. I think I answered this already.
Thank you for clearing that up. Very helpful but unfortunately you now raised another question haha.
You said that I would always be able to flash through kies using the registry hack... but wasn't that disabled so the registry hack wouldn't work any more a couple of versions back on. 803 or whatever it is?
And you also said that kies would recognise my phone but might not flash it which if I'm reading it right.contradicts.what you said about always been able to flash through kies.
Thank you so much for previous post it was very helpful.
Sorry if I sound stupid for.asking so many questions but I want to make sure I have covered all the angles before I proceed.
Again thanks for taking the time to help.

By registry hack, I really meant the Kies Registry Patcher app found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835628
Works on all Kies versions at least for now.
Like the original registry hack, this using this app makes Kies think that you have a stock rom and as long as Kies thinks that you have a stock rom, it will flash your phone.
In the sentence where I said that Kies will recognise your phone but won't flash, I mean't that it wouldn't flash without the Registry Patcher.
Thank you sooooooo much for your help dude.

I am in desperate need of help you guys! I screwed up so hard that I don't even know where to begin...
THE SITUATION:
-Right now when I go to turn on my phone, it will only stay on the current SAMSUNG GALAXY S I9000 screen (the very first screen when booting your phone) and it keeps flashing in and out.
Before trying to use Odin to put back the original Kernal on my phone, it was just stuck as the SAMSUNG GALAXY S I9000 screen, still wouldn't start. <I followed this website step by step>
http://www.samsunggalaxysforum.com/...-to-a-stock-rom-after-installing-darky's-rom/
BEFORE ALL OF THIS EVER HAPPENED:
I finally rooted my phone and manage to download Clockworkmod recovery on my phone and then used it to flash Darky's 10.2 custom ROM. Everything turned out great except at the beginning of the boot, the screen turned all rainbow coloured, completely distorted, and it continued to do that. I then tried to go back to Recovery mode to do the Voodoo lagfix but I couldn't even get into the recovery mode anymore, it either wouldn't let me, or it did but the screen didn't go to it properly (more likely the first one). I read somewhere that if you reflash your phone again, it should make all the tweeks go away. So I tried that from the Darky's tools menu and ever since then, I've been stuck with the Boot Screen this whole time...
I already bricked my phone once, and that was before the Flashing Boot Screen.
I really need help you guys, I would at least like to have my phone back to the original basis, at least! Your help would be greatly appreciated!
THANK YOU
P.S. (i'm not that great at all this phone tweeking, but I've succeeded in doing it up until yesterday)
Can you get into download mode (vol down+home+power while putting the battery in)?
If you can, just reflash a stock or custom rom in odin (like a darky odin rom) as guided by whatever rom you choose.
If you cannot get into download mode then we should know that too.
Edit: oh it looks like you could (and hopefully still can). Try a different rom or reflash. Sometime things do go wrong but as long as you can get to the download screen you should be fine in the end.

Yes, I can get into download mode! (thank you for reading my post).
If it's not too much to ask, could you maybe find the ROM that would be good for me to flash, considering my situation?
I want to be sure that it's what the top tech guys would recommend
A link would be appreciated
thank you again!
I'd start with a Darky rom - lots of users - active forum and odin editions for your situation. I have to go but you'll find the link on the first page of the development section.

So in essence all I have to do is flash the Darky ROM V10.2 with Odin using the Download mode on my phone and it should be okay?
Wait one caveat. Was it a gingerbread rom or froyo? Use a Darky rom of the same type...
Then yes it should be ok if you follow their guide. Cross fingers.

well...I did everything you said. The ROM is on there alright, it flashed and everything (And I know this because now when the boot screen STILL FLASHES, the darkcore & darky's rom logo are on it too).

any ideas??
Well we are sort of in long shot territory now... OK first try using a different odin version or ez odin and reflash.
If still not working??

If you flash a stock rom with pit the root is gone. It won't boot but they can't prove it was you either and I don't think it was you.
But see my other post on your other thread for one last thought.

okay that could be useful data potentially (let's hope it won't have to be).
If you didn't see my reply from the other thread, here it is:
Once I rooted my phone, I automatically went from Stock Froyo to Darky's 10.2 extreme edition. It worked and everything except for that color disfiguration and the clockworkmod recovery not working.
It's weird because after I flashed my first darky's rom, i checked the phone and it said that the firmware version was 2.3.X (I believe X may have been 4). So from what you're saying, I don't exactly think it has anything to do with the fact that I went straight from froyo stock to GB darky ROM.
So are you saying that I should flash darky's 9.3 for Froyo and THEN flash the latest version?
No I think that you need froyo re edition then stock gb with bootloader (as the instructions say I thought) then a custom gb like 10.2.

Ok, so just to be 100% on this
-I should flash Darky's 9.2 froyo onto my phone,
-then I should flash regular GB onto my phone (Not sure about the bootloader part though, if you could clarify that)(Also where would I get JUST a stock GB ROM?)
-then I can flash a custom GB ROM?

well i can safely say that flashing the 9.2 froyo rom was a fail. It's still doing the same old routine.
I just know that this problem can be fixed somehow without sending it in to bell or samsung or something.

I think you are right but other than trying again and again, which I've done before -though now I know why I had too - I am out of suggestions. Good Luck and if I have a brainwave I'll let you know.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA Premium App
OK a few last brainwaves:
1) Try a fully complete stock rom with cache.rfs, dbdata.rfs, factoryfs.rfs, modem.bin, param.lfs, zImage, and sbl.bin (this was from JL2 rom for Bell - not sure if they all have the sbl.bin) and pit.
The key is to make sure it is complete. Try downloading the same rom from 2 different sources just to be sure its not a corrupt download (going overboard I know).
2) Can you get into recovery? Try to format partitions (not system) under advanced features (I think - I only have 3e right now as I am trying to diagnose other issues).
3) If you have a froyo rom on at one point, try to put a steam recovery kernel on. Its not really being developed anymore but I think that if you put a CWM packaged rom on to the external SD you could flash from there or at least move it to the internal and then flash it. Worth a shot. Or you might be able to transfer one in regular CWM recovery - can't recall as I have not had to try for about 8 months.
4) If you really want to try something completely different, and I am not sure I've got the balls if it was me but if you can get a file to flash from CWM or steam that you can get on from the external SD, you might try CM7. It uses a completely different file system so you'd have to go back to froyo via odin only (as a samsung based rom will not play well when flashed on top of the cm7 file system).
And calling it a day at this one...

So I found the ROM for that ( http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm ) Just like you said. I downloaded from the *Provider Samsung Galaxy S i9000 heading and picked the I9000BOJS5 ## from February 2011 because I think somewhere around there I updated my phone to Froyo. Flashed it, did everything, still no luck.
I've had a recent hunch though. When the bootscreen boots up, it keeps saying i9000 only, when before it used to say i9000M at least for a little bit (yes my phone is i9000m). Is there a stock froyo rom that's specifically designed to go with the i9000m model? Or are they just all the same?
Never give up
-Thank you so much
Please help!!! I have searched and searched and searched the forums and have come across so many threads on how to add a custom rom to your Captivate.
To start, what I have been trying to do is add a custom rom after upgrading my phone from ver 2.2 to 2.3.3 GB. Some posts say you can just upgrade with the 2.3 on the phone, other posts say you need to take the phone back to the stock 2.1 rom. Then you find posts that say, make sure you have the stock bootloaders and kernals when you downgrade to the stock 2.1.
You can easily see how even a somewhat above novice can get confussed. To take my phone back to 2.1 I have followed posts that say use Odin 1.3. I have used odin before so no big deal. However in this case again you are getting different opionions and versions on this. Some have just the odin .exe and others have the .exe and the MD5 and .ini it the package. I am assuming that the one with just the .exe has everything built in as the size is quite big.
I have tried both ways and after I "Flash" it will not finish with the normal recovery mode and see the linux script. It will go to the ATT window and just keep rebooting over and over. I then will use my JIG and get back in download mode in order to reflash back to 2.3.3 just to get the phone to work again.
Can someone please give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong or direct me to the proper files and maybe some better step by step instructions.
Thanks in advance for the help.
What Rom is currently on you phone? Which Bootloaders do you have installed?

Here is the info:
Firmware: 2.3.3
Baseband: I897UCKF1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I897UCKF1-CL273832
Build: GIGERBREAD.UCKF1
^ From the looks of what u posted, it looks like u have the leaked i897uckf1 currently on ur phone. If that is the case, then u could Odin the Cognition Beta 2 Kernel and then flash the latest Cog Rom (having already copied it to ur internal sd).
Just flash the kernel through Odin then use button combo (volume +/- and power...release after u see the at&t screen) to get into CWM 4.0.0.5 and flash Cog 5 v 1.00 from there.

Are you plugging into a usb port in the back of your pc? Also, there are several methods for flashing back to stock now, once you upgrade to GB bootloaders you don’t ever want to use the Odin with the button fix because it will only flash the secondary bootloader and the primary bootloader will remain GB and the result will be a hardbrick. Also, some of the newer builds came with Froyo installed and using the older 1 click Odin by DesignGears will put those devices in a bootloop. So it really is dependent on your device and your needs. I now use the method outlined in the Continuum 6.1 thread which will not touch the bootloaders and brings you safely back to 2.1 stock. I always clear user data and cache in recovery, flash back to stock using Cezar's method (not a 1 click) prior to flashing a new Rom. Most devs recommend flashing to stock first because there is less chance of corruption.

Listen, I'm new at this and learned watchin mobiletech videos from youtube. At first I found it hard but now is pretty easy (in my opinion). The first thin I do is back up apps with titanium and paste to my laptop (for me is faster to install them back), go back to stock 2.2, master reset using dialer (no odin), root, reboot, install rom on sd card, using odin i install bootloaders (I9000), flash talon kernel (odin), flash rom (CWM) and reboot. That's how I do it. Now, I could b wrong but doing it that way, in that pattern works for me. Like I said, I'm new at this but trust me....I've done it several times and it works for me. Keep reading and then decide how you want to do it. Good luck..."HONESTLY"!!!
It all depends on where you are now and where you want to go.

I'm new to all of this and have done a good amount of research but seems like the information never ends and there are a few ways to load a custom rom.
Method one
BACK UP!!!
Flash to stock (FTS)
Wait for your phone to reboot and then re-enable debugging
Hook phone back up to pc and Master Clear (MC) using Odin
Load Clockwork update.zip (DOWNLOAD)
Load FireFly_X-X.zip to phone memory
Remove sim and external SD, and unplug USB
Boot into recovery and reinstall packages (You may have to reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork recovery)
Once in Clockwork recovery (Green Text), select install zip from SDcard
Next select choose zip from sdcard
Scroll down to FireFly_X-X.zip and select the file
This will run the script and install the ROM to your phone
After this is done, select go back and then select reboot phone
This may take a while, so leave your phone and go grab a snack!
Method 2
Load ROM file onto phone
Boot into recovery
Select ROM and flash it
Reboot, wait and enjoy
Wash, rinse, repeat!
What are the differences? Which one is better?
Seems like the first video is very simple and straight forward?
Am I missing something here? I'm already rooted and used titanium backup.
I'm on 2.2 Froyo and wanting to flash to Firefly 3.0
Thanks!
Hi all,
over the last couple of weeks I've been experimenting with Firefly 3.0 on my Rogers I896 Samsung Captivate. Then I put CM7 on the phone, but decided I liked Firefly better so I tried to switch back. Trouble is, it looks like I did something wrong because now I can no longer root my phone. I have searched a lot on line, and tried several root methods including z4root (which is what I was using during the Firefly installs - worked great) and SuperOneClick - no joy. Z4root runs for a few seconds, and finally just returns to the home screen rather than re-booting; and SuperOneClick goes through a lot of commands and finally hangs with the message "waiting for phone" (or something close to that).
I've used Odin 1.81 to flash back to the stock Rogers 2.1 image, then to 2.2. (I used the images from here.) When I dial *#1234# I get CSC="unknown" and when I dial *2767*4387264636# I get PCode = "SGH-I896ZKAATT" but I think this is wrong, I think it should display "SGH-I896ZKARWC". I tried the fix documented here and following this procedure I can get the CSC code to read "I896rwcjl1". But I can't load a custom ROM because none of the root tools will root the device.
One other problem I ran into - don't know if it's related, but I think it is - if I try to set up the stock e-mail client to use our Exchange server, it is not able to connect to the mail server even though I know FOR SURE the credentials are correct. (The same setup works like a champ on other Android phones.) I think that the firmware is sending some phone-related info to a Samsung server to validate the license for the Exchange client software, and this is actually the part that is failing rather than the connection to the mail server.
Can anyone provide some direction to a long-suffering Android noob who just wants his Firefly (and exchange e-mail) back?
Thanks in advance
Just go into download mode, Odin/Heimdall a CWM-based kernel onto the phone, then don't even bother with standard rooting procedures; just reboot to CWM recovery, flash a custom ROM and go.
Flashing to stock is largely unnecessary for this.

NOT true coming from an aosp rom you HAVE to flash back to stock with either a one click or use a .pit with the firmware .tar. cm7 and miui use a completely different partitioning table if you try to flash a tw rom over them it will not work.
but yes you are right about just flashing a kernel with odin/heimdall that has cwm baked in. no need to root before you flash a rom.

I thought he meant oneclicking back to full stock (2.1 or 2.2), which is unnecessary due to bootloader rubbish. 3File to GB is pretty much the only way to go.
Thanks! 2 more follow-up questions
Thanks all for your helpful feedback. Two more questions:
what ROM(s) would you recommend that has CWM built-in?
I'm assuming once this ROM was loaded, I could replace it witl Firefly fairly easily?
Thanks again

Hey fellas
So after dwelling on the decision to upgrade from GB to something higher (ICS), I have decided to go for it.
Only except now that I'm trying to do it, it all seems to complicated.
Im using :
Model Number: GT-I9000
Firmware Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9000SRJV1
Kernal Version: [email protected] #2
Buid Number: GINGERBREAD.XWJVN
I've tried rooting via this one-click thing: z4root.1.3.0
But everytime I open it on my phone it says: 'There is a problem parsing the package'
So I have researched it, and apparently this does not work with XWJVN P.S. (Have no idea what that code means)
But I need to root first, which, is the hard part; hence needing some guidance on how to root this phone
Thankyou very much!
Hey there,
Before I begin, the five letter code, XWJVN is like the identification for the firmware you're using.
So I'll make this brief and hopefully simple enough to understand:
1.) Download a stock firmware from http://www.sammobile.com under the "Firmware" section (in the search bar under Firmware just type in I9000 and a whole list should come up). For simplicity of rooting, find XXJW4 (its dead easy to root).
2.) In the I9000 development section somewhere there's a thread about something called CF-Root. Scroll down the thread to the second to last post. There should be a link for XXJW4 CF-Root. Download it.
3.) Also download a version of Odin from these forums somewhere
3) Unzip both the stock 2.3.6 you downloaded and CF-Root.
4.) Make sure the phone has at least 60% battery or so (to be on the safe side). Turn the phone off, and put it into Download mode by holding down Volume Down, Home and Power simultaneously.
5.) Open Odin on your PC. Connect your phone to the computer via USB cable.
6.) Check that the phone has successfully connected (a yellow box saying ID:COM and a number should appear).
7.) Select PDA in Odin and navigate to the stock rom your downloaded (it should be in a .tar file). Select it and DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE. Press Start.
8.) Wait for it to flash in. Let 2.3.6 boot up.
9.) Repeat steps 4 to 7, but this time navigate to the CF-Root file (again, .tar). Again, don;t touch anything else except Start. Wait for it to finish.
And done! You should be rooted, ready to flash any ICS rom.

And to @hawaiianmofo , please do read over that carefully because as you said yourself it ca be a tricky process if you don't know where to start (I tried following those guides as well, in the end I resorted to experimentation) and things can go wrong quite badly...

Not to be annoying, but is that SamsMobile thing, suppose to have UK as the description thing?
Also can't find this CF-Root thing. Could you link it to me here?

Yup.
The firmwares are coded by region as well, so XXJW4 is localised for the UK.
As for CF-Root, give me a moment to find the thread again.
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
(link fixed)
The CF-Root you're looking for is on the second to last post on the first page, it says "XXJW4 2.3.6" build or something like that.

Thanks

Which ROM do you use, dude? And what is what you dislike?
Usually, yes, reverting should work fine by using again Odin 1.82 and flashing again the ROM you liked more. GB roms can be easily rooted by Semaphore kernel, which features CWM and if I remember well even root, all-in. Just find the version compatible with your ROM.
Did you try CM10.2? Works great for me.

Yeah man, same steps, except don't flash CF-Root, and instead flash a file called dbsdata.rfs.tar (can be downloaded somewhere in these forums).
Really, after flashing the rom, all you have to do:
1.) The phone will display errors in red in the stock recovery saying it can't mount data, etc etc. Don't worry about it, its normal. Just take out the battery and put it back in.
2.) Get into Download mode, connect to the computer, open Odin. Same stuff as usual.
3.) Select PDA again and then navigate to dbsdata.rfs.tar and select it.
4.) Again, don't touch anything else. Just start it and let in flash.

I was just under the impression that perhaps ICS would conserve more battery, not sure if it is?
The lock screen/unlock bit is kinda annoying with the buzz
The apps for Music are ugly and Gallery can't open GIFs, as opposed to the original ones I was using on GB.
What's CM10.2 like?
@Soryuu
I remember when I was flashing ICS I had to download gapps, do I need to do the same, or will those files get me through fine?

ICS does conserve more battery, its true. JB has hardware acceleration which does make things either super smooth or pretty laggy, because it does take a hell of a toll on the processor.
Still, CM10.2 is a major improvement over some of the 4.2.2 roms I've tried. Its quite smooth, and I'd say worth a shot. GPS is (reportedly) better, so is battery (it is, at least on the builds I've tried), things are much smoother. There are a few things that need to be fixed though, but for the most part its brilliant.
And if you're flashing ICS only to get to Jelly Bean, you don't need gapps, you can just go straight ahead. You only need gapps if you plan on using ICS as a daily driver.

For battery life people write different experiences....my own was:
ICS4.0x/cm9.1 good
JB4.2x/cm10.1x not so good
JB4.3/cm10.2 very good
I never used buzz, and of course it is matter of own taste
I love CM10.2,the ROM is still in development (it is a mirracle that developer pawitp still works on menawhile "old" i9000 and brings us android 4.3 where Samsung gave up with 2.3.6) I use nightly 20130828 and it works perfect on my i9000. Some other people report different bugs, though. So if you prefer to use only stable ROMs, wait until it gets at least RC
