Hello,
I just received my Incredible S yesterday, and after some searching around, I've finally found the guide to root it on this forum.
I'm going to use the guide, but as a new rooter (only rooted an HTC Desire), I have a few questions regarding this specific phone.
My phone is currently s-on, and I'm going to follow the guide to get to s-off mode. However, does it matter that I'm only running 2.2.1? Am I still able to root?
Also, when does s-on get activated again? Only wen I go back to a retail ROM?
And, this is a total noob question...Am I able to use the Recovery ROM on one memory card (an 8GB), go through the root process and then switch to a 16GB card to install a custom ROM?
Thanks.
1. alpharevx works for both Gingerbread (2.3) and Froyo (2.2)
2. If you flash an official ROM (you can find them in a collection thread somewhere here on xda) you'll go back to S-ON.
3. After you've "installed" the custom recovery, it doesn't matter how many times you change SD-card; the custom recovery will still be there since you flash it over the original recovery.
Short answer; Yes, you can use a different SD-card to install a custom ROM from!
OK, just found this information in the ROM that I want to use...
HTC Incredible S S-OFF
Radio S-OFF in order to flash new radio
ClockworkMod Recovery with EXT4 support from here
Does using AlphaRevX put the radio into s-off mode?

I've been searching the forums, but I can't find anything about that...
I'd like to know how to find out if your radio is S-OFF or S-ON. Or is radio S-OFF the same as HBoot S-OFF (which you get by using alpharevx)?
Sometimes I have to say it's a bit hard to find info about some things for he IncS
alpharevx s-off is sufficient...you don't have to do a special radio s-off..I'm already running Android Revolution HD 1.1.0
edit: even I didn't find anything specific about radio s-off

Me neither, that's why I'm starting to get confused about the "what you need" part of ARHD forum topic...
And since it works for you, I guess what he means with "Radio S-OFF" is that you should flash that radio he recommends to use with his ROM, or does he know something that no one else on this forum knows?
Yes, I think that's what he means unless ofcourse he has some secrets
hey, i am new to this all this root and stuff...
just few question.
so, the s-ff in hdboot mean the phone is rootable?
and the Radio S-OFF means i can use any carrier I chose?
thank you :]

This section is for Nexus One and if you have it and want to get S-Off, the procedures are in the Development section and look for Blackrose S-Off Hboot thread.
thanks will do that again,
and yeah i have the n1

Hello, Iam noob in rooting and there is sooo much information about that, so my head goes burn, my simple question is only - can you recommend me the most easiest way to root my Incredible S? I want to install new ROM. Version Hboot 2.00, android 2.3.5 and never S-OFF, rooted. I have to downgrade HBOOT? Thank you so much
Oh look it's first sticky on the forum! Just a simple read through the first page of the forum might help just sayin'.
Anyways, this seems to be the easiest way to root...it's definitely easy to understand even if you have few to minimum understanding of rooting and flashing.

Since you are already S-OFF, then you should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery in FASTBOOT USB mode. Once you have CWM installed, you can make a 'nandroid' backup of your current ROM, apps and settings. Then you can flash the latest and greatest version of su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.
This will leave your current ROM, apps and settings intact.

Since you have permanent S-OFF, you don't have to worry about whether to unlock HBOOT 2.00.0000 or downgrading to run Revolutionary, etc.
You should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery, you could flash HBOOT 1.13, flash a new radio, etc.
You just need to get familiar with using FASTBOOT USB mode and all of the options that fastboot.exe can do.
I am speaking from experience. I have a permanent S-OFF IncS and even after I run the Android 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 RUU and it upgraded my HBOOT to version 2.00.0000, I was able to flash ClockworkMod recovery and install su-3.0.x.zip and root the ROM. I have also since reflashed back to HBOOT 1.13.

With HBOOT 1.13, ClockworkMod recovery is able to flash a custom ROM in one step. With HBOOT 2.00.0000, after you flash a custom ROM in ClockworkMod, you manually have to extract and flash the boot.img file in the custom ROM's zip file. In other words it is easier to flash custom ROM's with CWM and HBOOT 1.13 than it is with HBOOT 2.00

The only option you have right now for ICS is to run a custom ROM from the Development section and all of those are already rooted.
If you are talking about the official ICS OTA/ROM from HTC, we will have to wait and see if it will be rootable or not.
Once again since you have a permanent S-OFF on your phone, you shouldn't have to worry about. If you install the official ICS ROM and you lose root, you should be able to reflash CWM and then install su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.

Stupid question, how did you achieve s-off with hboot:2.0000? As I understand, Revolutionary doesn't yet support hboot:2.0000?

No a stupid question because the answer isn't very obvious, but the is a sticky post in the General forum that describes a process where you can downgrade the ROM and HBOOT to a version that Revolutionary does support.

Hi all,
this is my first post and it looks like I can only post in General for now...
I tried all the guide on this website about downgrading HBOOT 2.02 (Black Rose and Im also S-OFF).
I can install RUU ICS and Ginger Bread RUU but Im always HBOOT 2.02.
I dont have the HTC drivers, I use those in the file HTCDriver3.0.0.007 and the batch files in those guides always run without a glitch.
Am I stuck with the RUU ICS ? I find it laggy and would love to install Revolution HD 5.3 or any of your suggestions.
Phone works perfectly with both RUU ROMs btw.
EDIT:
I tried to change the HBOOT manually with fastboot and I get this message: "cannot determine image filename"
Probably a partition problem or a Black Rose problem ?
Thanks

I am having a hard time understanding your current configuration. If you have the stock HTC HBOOT version 2.02.0002, but are already S-OFF, then you simply need to flash a custom recoveyr such as ClockworkMod or 4EXT in order to flash custom ROMs. There is no reason to 'downgrade' if you have S-OFF.
If you have BlackRose HBOOT 2.02.0002 with S-OFF, again there is no reason to 'downgrade' this to install custom ROMs. Again you would flash a custom recovery and then you can flash custom ROMs.
If that does not answer you question, please post a screen shot of your bootloader screen and also the output of this command:
fastboot getvar all
so we can determine your current configuration.
Hello,
thanks for replying so fast.
Yes I have HBOOT 2.02.002 and S-OFF but I lost my recovery (4ext) when I installed ICS RUU. I had problem with the keyboard sometimes probably because I was using the first "official" ICS that came out and it was German.
I only need to replace the RUU with a ROM, but I dont have 4ext anymore and all I could find was a ling to a website to install an .apk but I dont have root anymore.
Thanks again.

With S-OFF, just boot into FASTBOOT USB mode and you can flash a new recovery image using the command:
fastboot flash recovery [name of recovery.img]

Then use ClockworkMod. You can download a .zip file from their website and that should contain the [recovery].img.
Then just reboot to fastboot and use the command that tpbklake advised.

ARHD 5.3 if you want to stick with Sense and ICS. I also would suggest poondog's Kangaroo Kernel.

Well I tried a few ICS ROMs using CWM and I had no problem at all , even for ARHD which suggest using ext4.
I also played a little bit with GB ROMs and IMHO, it is smoother than any of the ICS ROMs I tried. So maybe its time for me to get a new phone. I even wonder how come I managed to use ICS (German RUU) for so long without being annoyed by the lag.
Maybe I should try a ICS ROM without Sense ? Any suggestions ?
Thanks again btw.

No, I have always used a Sense ROM on my IncS. Did you try using Kangaroo Kernel with ARHD 5.3? When I use it with my stock, rooted ICS ROM, it is buttery smooth with no lag.

Gingerbread is smoother because there aren't nearly as many background processes running at the same time.
In regards to Sense ROMs, you can always try Blackout v4 (for Sense 3.6) or SVHD v1.7.1 (for Sense 4.1). Match either one of those ROMs' with poondog's kangaroo kernel and there is virtually 0 lag. Its quite the amazing kernel really (Yay poondog ).
If you want to try AOSP, there isn't much to try for ICS, just jellybean. And there are a number of things I don't like about each but let's not discuss that here since this post good get quite lengthy. Nevertheless, the developers made great strides to provide as best a ROM as they can and each one of the ROMs deserves a try. I would ditch the kernels that they came with and get Tesco-Joey Kernel (also made by poondog).

now i can get to s-off
I don't know why you would have such a hard time finding the right RUU. It's still on HTC's website for God's sake.
