The Dangers of LTE and AT&T! - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

I'm not extremely angry or anything, but I got throttled by AT&T today lol! I don't really use wifi much and I stream music and movies etc from my cloud via Pogo plug, and I'll be honest, I've been so excited about my speeds I've been using my unlimited data plan to it's fullest to say the least.

As you can see, my data speed has dropped drastically for the remainder off my billing cycle which is only for a few more days.

stop using so much then lol. honestly, 2gb is plenty for a monthly bases. if youre crushing the network cause youre downloading movies, music, and what not non stop, then youre hurting the network for everyone else.
the iphone is the number one web browser on mobile platforms, and att learned quick that if they didnt do this, then their networks speeds would go way down or even crash... and now that att is competing with verizon (which throttle too for the same reason) and sprint, and soon to be tmobile and maybe even local cell providers like patriot and bell, att needs to stay competitive and make sure their network isnt being hammered by a few people that abuse the network

2Gigs is the sweet spot for generating revenue. Fact is, they WILL NOT throttle on the tiered plans. Follow the money...
2Gigs in one month is squat and VERY easy to go through w/out streaming music, movies or vids. I do it regularly.

Let us know how much you used man, so we can watch out?

I will say I was actually trying to use a lot off data. That's why I'm not mad. I don't think this would happen if I go back to normal use. My data heavily increased when I started using my cloud. I promise I'm not doing anything illegal. Even apps that recommend for you to use wifi, I was using my data. it won't show how much I've used so far, but last month I used 8.5GB of data and I had no problems. And that was before LTE. so I think misty people would be fine.

You can always check your data usage for the billing cycle up to the day before online under my account and current usage.
Or just dial *3282# and it will send you a text with your data usage of that cycle. Its that easy lol.
---------- Post added at 08:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:13 AM ----------
Plus I advice people to stop running speed test every 5 mins, you will be surprise how much data it uses specially on an LTE connection.

I've never gone over 2GB in my entire term, and I have everything on autoupdate, autosync, everything. I usually average around 1600 MB, and the highest I've hit is 1800MB.
I don't use Google Music, Pandora, or Youtube on mobile network; I usually make sure to be on WiFi for that sort of thing.

They just want everyone off the unlimited plan, when they think their better then Verizon (already 11 months behind Verizon's LTE, GG).
Also, I get how there's a certain amount of spectrum that you can really have for HSPA+, but with LTE, you can push MASSIVE amounts of data through the network with no problems.
Oh well... we'll just had to deal with it until the Government grabs the carriers by the ba- nevermind, we'll just have to deal with it.

ATTN: MEdia net users and teatherers

As most of you know I have discussed using media net instead of pda personal, and even taught numerous people how to get away with it even tethering with media net.
Well im sorry I am the one to tell you all. There are some new facts AT&T fails to tell everybody as of 10-26-08.
1. AT&T has intergrated a provisioning for media net users. Here are the details
* EVERYONE that has the media net feature on there account will be watched
what this means for kaiser/tilt users?
If you are using 15$ media net instead of the required 30$ pda personal WATCH OUT!!! once you use (and it does not matter the phone) 2.5gb a month a flag goes up. A specific department will now watch data transfers for 3 months after the flag goes up. If you use more than 5gb in a month, Well you are pretty much FUC*ED. If this happens 1 of 2 things can happen
1. MASSIVE amounts of overage charges.
2. Your contract can be canceled and you will be liable for any early termination fee. This is because as you have certain rights with ATT they also have certain rights.
Oh yea, one more thing. For those of you actually thinking about going legit and adding the 60.00 pda personal with tethering feature... BEWARE it is no longer unlimited, it has a max use of 5gb a month and .49 cents per mb over.
So I hope i have helped or at least made you AWARE, so watch your data use if the above applies to you.

I've been flying right and paying the $30 plan, but it's good for others to know as AT&T charges can get out of hand quickly.

I had tried to do the $15 media net, but even though it said I had successfully added it, it was still charging me pay-per-use. I didn't have an IMEI of a regular phone, so when I called to get the $300+ charges removed I had to sign up for the $30 plan
Thank you for the heads up on this.
I've been using the PDA Personal Unlimited w/ 1000 SMS since I got my Tilt. Since I only use tethering for recreational surfing, I think the most data I've ever used, according to my bill, is like 1.5GB/mo.
Good, this really pissed me off when they finally decided to do this. The 30.00 makes sense if your always in a 3g area, but you are always using edge its utter and complete bullsh*t.

Do you really think AT&T would publicly release documentation to the effect that they are going to bust customers that are knowingly using the incorrect features. Do you think im going to risk my huge salary and even bigger private office by releasing AT&T internal documentation.
If you dont believe me, go ahead and tether 10gb with media net and see what happens. Besides you know what feature your supposed to have, what i have taught everyone to do isint exactly legit (but you all knew that anyway) So its not like AT&T is doing anything illegal by checking usage on their network.

Why ask him to provide something you can read regarding this. Why not just log into your account and read it for yourself. But I can confirm that AT&T has changed something, because I have several AT&T phones (ie Sony Ericcson 580i, and BB Pearl). I once was able to simply change phones by switching sims and not notice anything on the My Account (using manage my account) No however as soon as I switch the sim into a new phone it sees immediately and changes the phone I'm using to the match where the sim card is. It didn't do that before. That's how I know they are reading (provisioning) the phones network usage to match the device it's in.

Same here. About two months back I sent my Tilt out for a repairs and I had borrowed a spare phone (LG) from my coworker. Within that time of using her phone, I had logged into my account and noticed that they had updated my device to the temporary phone automatically. And vise versa when I got my Tilt back.
Another reason I decided to keep flying straight.
what happens to those users who legitimately use medianet on the PPC device only (no tethering) and go over the bandwidth flag? I mean, if you think about it, video streaming in a 3G area could definitely hit that mark, especially if you download all install cabs on your phone rather then onto your computer. add to that IM's, remote desktop, google nav, and you can see where bandwidth could go up. and these are all legitimate uses. I'll be pissed if I get hit with something like that for using my phone the right way.

Ok so what's this mean, folks? I know how it works, but what I mean by my question is... if I'm on the $30/mo data plan can I use this or will they up me to the $60 or whatever it is? No, they have no way of knowing what your doing as to tethering. The only thing they may be suspect of is if you are going over 5GB a month or getting very close to it often. Also if they see extremely high data transfers in a few hours they might suspect you are tethering, but they still have no way of knowing and they can't change your plan without your consent/request first. Just keep an eye on your data transfers with something like spb data monitor and be careful with big downloads.

Ok, I was just curious. See, I've heard both ways. I've heard people say they tethered and got a friendly call from cingular/at&t saying "hey guess what...naughty naughty, you used your phone wrong buddy" [ok, probably not those exact words!] and told them they had to change their plan. Just worried about that I guess, as anyone can understand.
Has anybody got this working with a PSP? It doesn't seem to find the signal, while my old S620 can.
This wifi program is awesome much quicker opening time and much less setup then WMWifirouter. To bad this program didn't come out months ago before I spent the $30 and bought WMWifirouter LOL
Installation worked fine with my phone (htc jade) and I also have a shortcut to start the programme, but there are no buttons (info, start) at the bottom of the display and thought there is e little arrow that points to the bottom (I think it's an arrow) I'm not able to click on it and furthermore I'm not able to scroll down with finger / stylus.
So very frustrating: I can start the program, setup the name and passwort of the connection but neigher start something nor use any other functionality of it!?
Anyone has the same problem / ideas to solve it?

I question the person that said they cant tell if your tethering.
I would suggest they can tell pretty quickly.
And yes they will slap you with a tethering charge if it goes over certain amount.
At&t is getting old with the insane charges. Time to trade up for a cdma2000 version of the fuze i think. I personally will not re-up (buy a new device that is) with at&t until they join the rest of the world w/ data pricing.

How do you figure? All AT&T knows is that you are using an app on your phone that is transferring a lot of data. Maybe you're just browsing the web on your phone, maybe you're using skype, etc. They can't tell what app is using the data, so they can't tell if it's a tethering app or the opera that ships with the phone.

Network/Tethering Speeds Explained

I'm starting a thread about this subject here because it isn't appropriate to continue a separate discussion where it all began.
There is a misunderstanding about Network/Data/Tethering Speeds and I would like to explain it the best I can.
If you Are using the root tether apps, you are connecting at 54Mbps.
- 54Mbps at 40% capacity is around 21.6Mbps
- 21.6Mbps is approximately 2.7 MB (MegaBytes) per second
- 21.6Mbps is also the MAX throughput you should expect
- With overhead and other factors, generally you will get approx 65-70% of that throughput that is usable data (OSI Model Overhead)
- 65% of 21.6Mbps = 1.755 MB/Sec Actual Speed Downloading a File, or 14Mbps
Why, then, would I get readings as high as 20-22Mbps via Speedtest Sites? Because that is RAW data (Little Overhead - OSI Model) and providing you with MAXimum Throughput readings on a 54Mbps Maximum Bandwidth Link.
Bandwidth and Throughput are Totally different, though mistakenly thought of as the same.
If your connecting via the USB Tether option, you are connecting at 480Mbps (USB 2.0 Standard), but you may notice via Windows 7, that the LinkSpeed is reading 412Gbps, which is obviously wrong, so going with 480Mbps for this explanation.
- 480Mbps at 40% capacity is around 192Mbps
- 192Mbps is approximately 24 MB (MegaBytes) per second
- 192Mbps is also the MAX throughput you should expect
- With overhead and other factors, generally you will get approx 65-70% of that throughput that is usable data (OSI Model Overhead)
- 65% of 192Mbps = 15.6 MB/Sec Actual Speed Downloading a File, or 124.8Mbps
If your network speed is at 21.6Mbps or less (SpeedTest directly on the phone), you wouldn't necessarily see any significant speed differences between the phone/USB Tether/WiFi Tether Methods.
If your phone, such as mine, is getting Speeds as fast as 40.5Mbps Down, then yes, you would have quite a difference between USB Tether and Wifi Tether speeds on your computer.
40.5Mbps = 5.06 MB/Sec File Transfer Rate. Because the capacity of the USB Tethering is way beyond the Max Network Rate (Phone), there is theoretically no Loss in speed. 124.8Mbps - 40.5Mbps = 84.3Mbps. There is over 84.3Mbps of spare throughput available.
So, for those who have argued that there shouldn't be that much of a difference between Wifi Tethering and USB Tethering, learn about overhead, bandwidth, througputs, and the OSI model. It's factual information and will allow you to understand more about the difference in speeds on any network. Using the methods of calculation above, you will always be able to know what to expect when transferring a file to and from the internet, or even another computer. Just keep note of the MAX output numbers. There will always be something that gets in the way. The Max Speed on the Freeway might be 65MPH, but when traffic is very heavy, you might be down to 20MPH. Same goes for number of computer on the information highway.
A good detailed Bandwidth Calculator can be found at: http://web.forret.com/tools/bandwidth.asp?speed=14&unit=Mbps
After looking at the preview of the post, I already know what I should expect as a question about bandwidth/throughput via USB mode.
Question: If you show the MAX USB Throughput to be 15.6MB/Sec, then why can I transfer files to and from phone and other USB Devices at 22+MB/Sec?
Answer: USB VS Ethernet. The USB Is actually being converted to an Ethernet connection for the purpose of Network Data and not File Data.

PS. It's late and I'm tired. So, if something is not clear, or it appears I goofed up something bad here, please do not hesitate to ask questions. I would like this to be as clear as possible as to why I answered other posts the way I did. And to do it here in a General thread in order to not go off-topic in a Developer Thread.
Speed Test Screen Shots Showing Differences
Ok, so photos/screen shots always provide a better line of proof and explanation. Because I tend to get much higher speeds than most, I wanted to show the difference in the speeds between Phone, USB Tether, and WiFi Tether when you MAX Speeds reach above 40Mbps.

These are crazy speeds. In fact, that's why I have no issue paying the extra $30 for the HotSpot service. $30+$30 = $60 for 40+Mbps Speeds, and the uploads speeds are crazy ridiculous also. Comcast at 20-22Mbps Down and about 3-5Mbps Up runs about $65/month. So, basically, I'm getting double the speeds for same price (actually for $30 since I already have to pay for the Data Service on my phone), plus it's available wherever I go. Of course, most areas are still 3g, but I'm happy with 2+Mbps down on the road if I ever need it, On-Demand and Verizon expects to have all 3g areas upgraded to 4g by mid to end of 2013, which isn't very far away.

hehe...This is the pinnacle of polite snarkiness; especially commendable considering you were tired.
Seriously though, great post; I've emailed this to several people who needed this explanation.
On a related (though tangential) note, what do you guys think about creating a "map" of 4G speeds/availability by zip code/city? We could use Latitude or some other tool to create an actual graphical depiction as well. We'd start off small within the Revo boards and if it catches on, branch out to the rest of xda to get more data.
Is this something that would be at all useful, or--if nothing else--at least cool information to have/look at? Or is this my nerdy love of analyzing/comparing statistical data causing me to come up with nonsensical, useless ideas?
Thoughts?

Hiya
speaking about speeds. If I know that both my phone and my laptop is N capable, is there any way to create an N wifi link between them?
I'm not much interested about the external 3g net coverages or speeds but to pump up the lan transfer speed between my phones internal memory and my pc.
there's a nice app for example called Wifi File Explorer. Usually I get between 993-1100 KB/sec upload speed to the internal directories.
I hit roughly the same boundaries if I try to stream some videos via the web interface of the VLC media player targeting my tablet
Reading through your post these seem to be quite normal speeds for 54mbps if I understand it right, but can anything be done to improve this still?

Yes. During the posting of this thread, I didn't know about the WiFi Tether Beta project found at this link:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Not only can you get an "N" connection (Though actual speed is dependent on certain factors, but you can also get Infrastructure (Non Ad Hoc) mode to work with it, depending on your phone model. If you have an LG Revolution, use the Optimus S phone in the selection menu and you can get your phone to be a standard Access Point.
Note, though, that it is a known issue among phones, which research I just completed a bit ago, the that app can cause your phone to randomly reboot, but usually you can get a solid 20-30 minutes out of it before that happens. If nothing else, use it for 15 mins, shut it down, restart it, and go.
Other than that particular app, I've yet to come across one that goes above G speeds of 54Mbps.
At least for the market apps. If you have Verizon phone with the 4gHotSpot app, non-rooted phone, and pay for the HotSpot plan, that will also do N speeds via Wifi Tethering.
-Cybie
well, thank you for your reply, I'll do my homework on the beta thingie then. Every once a while I did some research about the subject, but always came out empty handed. Hope it works; Thumbs up
*** unfortunately testing will be postponed for a while as I just realised that though both receiving devices are Ns and rooted but the hosting device is an S-ON Htc chacha, and though I read about the firmware downgrade root possibility half of the screen is black because of a fall..
And in the upcoming weeks its just not an option for me to have it be taken to a repair..
But when it happens, I'd happily post my findings about it!

I hope that's a joke. We've already established on this forum that you don't have to be a hog to get throttled. That's why this is an issue.

One of the very few people I know on Sprint said he hardly ever gets over 1 mbps on 3G. He did say their 4G was ok, about the same speed as my AT&T 3.5G, when he can connect to it. But it never works indoors.
Granted that is only 1 person but it must be bad because he is probably going to switch to AT&T.

I agree that sprint has horrible 3g speeds, but I would rather connect to the internet at 1 mbps than not connect at all. Just got back from the mall, and tried to get internet there many times today but couldn't because the networks must fail easiley with many people on them. I have ran into these situations 6 or 7 times over the past 2 days and it is starting to get really annoying. Sprints 4g is about 1 or 2 mbps faster than att's hspa+, and the only times I have troubble getting it inside is if it is a multiple story building your in and you are on the bottom story. And you cant beat unlimited data messages and roamiing. Oh well enoygh complaining about att, guess ill tough it out for the last 1 1/2 years of my contract

I just don't get how people can use that much data "without tethering". I tried my best one month to watch YouTube and listen to Pandora for as long as possible, I only used a little over 1G.
I might be strange for some people but I prefer to watch Netflix on my 50" LCD with DTS surround sound instead of 4.5" screen with stereo headphone.

I am never at home, and I watch a lot of hockey games live on the phone, as well as on the phone constantly watching youtube and other sites, pretty much live on the phone, and I am hoping they start to offer some 10gig plans soon instead of the 6 gig plans that they max out at here.
I never tether, and rarely download, just the odd song or two here and there and apps, but media consumption like streaming video is a huge part of my phone experience and I need a data plan to allow for this important use for me.
So AT&T announces that throttling would start October 1. Vivid wasn't released until after that date. Before signing a new contract, people already knew they could be throttled. It's been stated many times before, you still get unlimited. Nothing in the contract states at what speed you are to get your unlimited data.
I work at a place that has wifi. I have wifi at home. My phone connects to many of the free wifi places around where I live. I still manage to stay below 2GBs. I am still under the unlimited plan and have not been throttled. I stream Pandora, watch YouTube, and stream Netflix.
This Vivid forum is starting to fill up with complaints and nothing relevant to the phone itself. I would return this phone not because I can't unlock the bootloader, but just so I don't have to keep seeing so many threads with people ranting.

I was the proud owner of a Nexus 4 for about... 4 hours

I was a bit confused as to whether I should create this thread under troubleshooting, or general, but decided on general since I'm not really looking to troubleshoot my device anymore; just looking to get thoughts and opinions.
After Google failing to put my order through for a long, frustrating week, I finally managed to place a successful order through. A pleasant surprise was when the phone shipped in one day instead of the 1-2 weeks the google store claimed.
So when I got the phone, I immediately did some basic testing (speakers, calls, internet, wifi, bluetooth, camera, etc), and when I was satisfied enough, updated it to 4.2.2 and unlocked the bootloader, flashed a custom recovery and rooted it. Then I got around to really using it.
When I was copying my music over (and I'm a music fanatic), I used up 10gb of the 12gb available. Why on earth would Google give us such low storage and omit an external slot? I knew about this before I bought the phone, but I think it really hit home when I copied my data over. I've read that it's because they want to push their cloud, but without truly unlimited network internet, that point is moot. Not to mention the fact that it's not capable of more than H+, so that's another point that counters constant cloud usage.
So I thought what the hell, slow internet (getting ~1mbps vs ~12mbps on my previous T989), low storage, I'll live with it. I'll change my habits and live with it, maybe swap music out according to my daily mood, and try to be on wifi most of the time.
And then the really big bad thing happened. When i was talking to a friend via bluetooth, I was fiddling with my phone trying to google something, and the internet wasn't working. I toggled wifi off and it was working on 3G/H+. So I reconnected WiFi and Bluetooth disconnected. After replicating a few times, I realized that if you're on wifi and in an active call, internet via wifi won't work at all. This killed the conversations I was having on FB, Google Talk and Whatsapp.
Had I not already been frustrated with the phone's storage and internet, I might have worked harder on trying to find a solution, but I'd had enough. I called a friend and handed the phone over to him, and he'll hand over his used but mint-condition S3 this evening when he's had a chance to copy his data over. The S3's a decent phone, and it's solving all three of my current major issues.
Since the speed and storage are clearly marked, I'm just going to say I was stupid in not really realizing these things before I went "ooh, shiny!!", but that wifi/bluetooth bug seems to have been a persistent problem for a while now, a well-reported bug.
Anyway, I just had to rant a bit. What are your short or long-lived experiences with this device?
The only reason I would trade it for an s3 is to sell the s3 on ebay and then buy another nexus 4 with some money left over.
Sorry you didn't like it. Hope you have a better experience with your new phone!
Ive owned every nexus phone and this one by far is my favorite. Absolutely love it an havnt had a single issue with it. I do agree that i wish they gave the phone more storage but ill never use up 16 gb anyway
I had a note 2 and like it a lot, I had a gs3 before that, but I lie stock Android look and and cm10 always end up having some sort of bug, storage wise I'm not too happy but j realize I don't listen to all my 10gb of music so I keep only 2-3gb, I do play games but at the same time I don't play all, I try to maintain all the apps I actually use, the gs3 and note 2 does take better pictures tho, but the gs3 doesn't feel as snappy as the note 2 and the note 2 screen is great for content but too bug for work sometimes, so far I'm happy with the nexus 4
Btw I'm guessing you still want the phone since you posted here

The N4 isn't for non-tech enthusiasts. The vast majority of N4 owners derive great pleasure in modding their phones, improving and troubleshooting issues. That's why it's not considered or even marketed as a phone for the mass of consumers.
With that being said, the S3 is a much simpler phone, though I hate the hardware too much to say anything nice about it.

The slow internet could just be because I don't get good Tmobile coverage everywhere, but the T989 still gave me ~12+ in the areas the N4 gives me ~.8-1.2mbps. I've found a possible workaround here on xda for the biggest issue I have (the bluetooth/wifi issue), it has to do with buggy Qualcomm drivers. I'll test it out. As for constant music streaming, it would kill my 2gb 4G limit in a week, after which they'll push me down to edge for the remainder of the month.
And yes, the S3s pricier, I'd never consider it if I wasn't getting it in an even trade.
Thanks for the replies and feedback guys, you're making me want to go get it back from my friend. It is no doubt a great phone. Now going back to work, my boss won't be too pleased!
