I've been mulling over the idea of rooting my phone just for the lagfix - the unrestricted access to the phone is just a bonus for me since I haven't had the urge to delve into ROMS and other things requiring rooting.
Seeing as there are ways to flash the phone back to stock if the need arises for a warranty (cracked screen, faulty wiring, and what have you) there would seemingly be a small risk in that regard.
For people who have rooted their Captivate, do you find it "the best thing ever"? Can you go back to an unrooted Captivate? I've read many people saying they felt their Captivate performing x2 faster with the lag fix, what are your experiences?
You can read whole forum topics of people arguing about whether lagfix helps or not. It's really subjective and depends on a lot of different factors, so it's kind of like trying to judge which modem has faster data transfer. Maybe it's the modem, maybe it's where you were standing when you did the test My feeling is that it helps initially but I don't feel like it makes a substantial difference in the long run. If the ROM I'm running doesn't have it, I never apply it, but I never remove it if it comes with it either.
As far as rooting is concerned, you are correct that, barring a hardware defect like a bad USB port that prevented you from flashing, you can always go back to stock for warranty work. As long as the warranty situation doesn't bother you, there aren't any disadvantages to rooting as long as you do your research before you dive into your root folder and start deleting things
If all you want is lagfix and nothing more, I personally wouldn't bother. However, if you're looking to ease your way into learning more about the inner workings of your phone, maybe trying different ROMs, and generally tinkering, I think it's a great place to start.
Good luck!
I see, thanks for the information apbthe3!
I've decided to go ahead and root my phone, which I did successfully. Now when it comes to the lagfix, they all seem to be fairly outdated - at least the threads on here. Can anyone point me in the right direction to a working lag fix? As far as I've researched, http://project-voodoo.org/download is a good one, but it worries me because it says it's for "Froyo 2.2" whereas I'm running "Gingerbread 2.3"... will this be a problem?
Honestly, there is no reason I wouldn't want to root a captivate. It is much easier than my past experience with my G1 (HTC dream). Nothing but benefits can come about as a result of rooting your captivate. I would definitely try out flashing ROMs too, that's where you get the best increases in performance.
If you want to stay with Froyo, you can just flash a KB1 kernel that supports Voodoo and root. You can keep stock rom but have Voodoo lagfix, sound and Color fix + root. And In my opinion Lag fix is a big deal on Froyo roms, not so much on Gingerbread, though I use it on I897 roms.

Will Voodoo lag fix work with 2.3? Did some more reading and apparently it doesn't require your phone to be rooted.
Yes but not the link you posted. You need a kernel for gingerbread that had it baked in...
I see. I guess this is more trouble than what it can provide me. Was thinking it was as easy as a "one click" lag fix thing but after reading around it can get pretty over complicated with some methods...

Dont get too overwhelmed. The process of flashing a kernel is downloading one file, connecting your phone, and clicking a button. You just have to make sure its the right and compatible kernel or you risk some big problems. Someone better with 2.3 based roms can help you find a kernel compatible with the stock rom.

I'm going to get my Captivate in the mail tomorrow and was doing some research on the Android OS and the way AT&T locks some of the features of the phone.
Should I wait for Android 2.2 to come out or should I get a ROM on my phone? Also, is it possible to delete the AT&T apps (bloatware) without rooting? I have a 32gb class 4 microSD card if that helps with anything. Thanks.
Can anyone recommend something?
I would say keep up with the SRE thread. Its really great as far as mods go and @designgears is on top of his game. Other than that, I'd say wait on 2.2

To answer your other question you can not remove bloatwear without rooting. Rooting is easy as there is a one click root/unroot process which is stickied in the dev section. Right now the best ROM is Eugene's Vibrant Hybrid because its an actual ROM. What designgears puts out is more removal of bloatwear with some added features that ATT did not included in the captivate as well as including overclock and a lag fix which you install. To me that is not a ROM but it is a very good product which as of late has gone under many changes. Research, research, research before you do anything. Read all 300 pages of any thread because it is not all just banter, lots of good info in those threads.

Wow, I guess I'm going to turn myself into an Android expert now by reading these threads. The reason why I was hesitant on installing a ROM was that there were some problems people described, such as tethering being disabled or the phone having problems loading some apps or software, etc. Thanks a lot for the info.

i think they are referring to the announcement that DG made that SRE 2.0 is going to be a complete ROM.....hes playing around with alpha right now
Does this guy do this for a living?
No. No one in xda does this for a living they just accept donations. 5 bucks from 50 people though sure does add up to pay the bills

Nope. but anyway: My opinion on trying other roms: I tried 2 roms. the leaked 2.2. was good for a little while, played around with flash, kinda laggy still, but its a leaked version, so whatever. Then i changed to "Tayutama's JPM Froyo w/Xcaliburinhand's Re-oriented Kernel" Next day, back to stock. Too many problems, custom roms are being updated constantly, more buggy than official releases. well at least the ones i always get, so back to stock Rooted. Sideloading enabled. And LOVING IT! I'm just gonna wait til the official froyo release, flash is great, but i never really used it as much as i thought i would. as long as you have root, sideloading, bloatware removal, and lagfix, i think you got yourself a damn good phone.

you tried 2 roms and decided they were too buggy??
go try cognition. you will wonder why the phone didnt come from the factory like that.
honestly the 2 you tried were not the best to get any idea of anything from....the leaked is leaked with no tweaks and is a tad buggy. then you tried one that was an i9000 rom that people are working on making stable....
give cognition a try

i know that does sound stupid. haha. i meant on my captivate, i have tried way too many roms on my past phones. i have been thinking about trying cognition 2.2, just waiting for it to get out of beta. should be worth the wait.

I would recommend running his beta 2.2. It makes the phone run a LOT better. Fixed a ton of issues that I was experiencing.
But.. it is pretty hit or miss on his builds... Usually I wait until after the whole number release (i.e. 9.1 vs. 9) so the initial bugs are figured out and fixed.
Froyo on this phone with the tweaks DG has been doing are phenomenal. But then.. I'm impatient and don't mind flashing the crap out of this thing.
And to answer the OP. Rooting does not affect your AT&T voice/data plan. It does affect your warranty. Anything that can be used to circumvent the "lockdown" that AT&T and Samsung has on the phone will do that.
So... Rooting, removing "bloatware", flashing ROMS are all a big no-no if you still want to be within the EULA and Warranties with both AT&T and Samsung.

That does sound like good advice, but that would still be too much loading roms for me. It went from the 1st beta to beta 9 all in less than 1 month. It's great because the work is getting better and better faster but i'm not the type that likes flashing new roms every week, once it gets out of beta i think i can deal with it. I'm working with stock 2.1, root, sideloading, lagfix, GPS working fine (don't really use it that much to begin with) and I can't complain, its a great phone.
What is SRE? A previous post mentioned to keep up with the SRE thread and then mentions @designgears. Is that the designgears' "[ROM]Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.1 (Voodoo - CogKernel - Bootanimation)" thread they are referring to? I used the "Search Forum" tool and that was the first thing that came up.
Many times when people refer to newbies (like myself) to "look up this/that" or "try this/that", they use acronyms and its difficult to find what exactly they are referring to.

Hello everyone, I have a Captivate flashed with a darkytt3r v8.1 ROM. I ran a quadrant standard benchmark and got a pretty good 1105 Mhz. Then I realized I hadn't even flashed speedmod-kernel-i897-k12o-500hz-CWM. After I flashed it from the SGS kernal flasher and then i did another benchmark and got 1018. Did that ROM come with a better speed mod that I overwrote with this one? Can anybody suggest a good speed mod to put on my phone? I like to have my phone push the boundary's of going so fast it combusts so the faster the bester
Am I seeing double?
As long as you try to fix it you can see whatever you want haha
Stop using quadrant!!!
Use whatever kernel feels fastest.

I am sure that soon there are going to be anti-quadrant lynchmobs comprised of more than half the people in the SGS forums.
Dupont, the succinct fact of the matter is that quadrant means nothing.
As far as I know (and am concerned), Linpack is the only somewhat worthwhile benchmarking utility, second only to simply how the UI feels in your hands.
Also, before we jump to conclusions, do you enable any lagfixes?
Beyond what I've already stated, it doesn't take all that much to quickly look over the 5 or so worthwhile kernels in the development section and make an educated decision on your own.
I just got this phone which is my first android phone so i don't know what lagfixes are but Im pretty sure i dont have any

That quadrant disparity you might be experiencing might be due to darky 8.1 having a preinstalled, enabled by default lagfix that disappeared when you installed the speedmod kernel.
I don't mean to be a tough-love welcome party (by the way, welcome to the android community), but I know I did a lot of reading about, messing with, and messing up my phone before I even joined the captivate forums.
Do yourself a favor and read some of the dev stickies about ROMs, kernels, and modems just to get a bit better of an idea of their basic purpose/function, then look through the rest of the dev threads for kernels that might be what you're looking for, but (more importantly) would be compatible with your ROM.
It seems like a PITA, but knowing more about how your phone works will benefit you a great deal in the long run. Put in the time, reading, and careful experimenting right now, and you'll be flashing ROMs like a pro in no time.
Speedmod is also just the name of a Kernel. It is not a type of thing that goes on your phone. If you want the fastest speed, use an overclocked Kernel. I have used them in the past, but have always came back to Speedmod because it gets updated so regularly and also has the Voodoo Sound fix.
Thanks guys. I have no problem flashing roms as I watched many video on how to and read many articles on it. Also it might help that my father is senior member of this site with more than 10000 posts . I'll search through and see if I can't learn more about it.
Thanks again, Richard

Hi,
I have a few questions about Custom ROMs:
1. I have a basic idea about custom ROMs, but what why are there different Kernels for the same hardware? And is one better than the other? What makes a certain Kernel, better? As I understand with custom ROMs, you don't really have a choice in choosing the kernel you run, because each ROM is built on a specific kernel - am I correct about this?
2. I am looking to put a gingerbread 2.3 ROM on my Samsung Captivate, and I am looking for a ROM which is minimalistic Android and doesn't come with, shall we say 'bloatware' - for the lack of a better word. Of course, I would be looking for something stable and optimized for performance. Any recommendations?
Thanks.
1) Different kernals do offer different features. But they are swapable. That is why the kernals are available in seperate threads in the dev section. The biggest feature that is kernal dependent is overclocking. I have never been a fan of overclocking, don't think its needed on this phone. I also have never had good luck flashing different kernals. Whenever I have tried that the ROM runs buggy, freezes, lots of FCs. While you can change the kernal at any time, I have always found best performance with the kenal the dev chose to include with their ROM. I'm sure there are a hundred people here that would disagree with that. Just like ROM choice it's a personal decision.
2)ALL the ROMs here 2.2 or 2.3 will be de-bloated. I have tried all the 2.3 ROMs, and the only thing that is consistent with them is their unstableness. I can't get more than 2 hours of use without a freeze that needs a reboot, or it rebooting on it's own. The only reason I a sticking with a 2.3 ROM is Netflix. The app works on the 2.3 ROMs, but I cannot get it to work on 2.2. If you want something stable and optimized for performance: stay on FroYo. I recommend FireFly. If you want to take the plunge to 2.3 (after you have read EVERY GB sticky twice, paying attention to the bootloader info, or you'll have an expensive paperweight) I recommend GR, Perception II, or Mosaic. Mosaic was the most stable for me, but runs the same touchwiz as froyo, so it just feels like buggy froyo. The other two run touchwiz 4 from the SGS II.

I have to respectfully disagree with quarlow. He is right about the the kernel swapping, and whatever kernel that comes with the ROM is gonna work and work well. The thing that distinguishes different kernels from one another is again the ability to OC and there is also BLN features and UV capabilities, so it is all user preference. HOWEVER it is the same as flashing a ROM. I have NEVER had an issue or seen a ROM get freezes or FC's because of flashing a different kernel. Not unless your are OC'ing. But it could just be my luck too (with the exception of the trident kernel which came OC'd to 1.4ghz, which was silly because if your phone can't handle that, it won't boot.. luckily mine can)
As far as the 2.3 ROMs go, again I have to disagree. I have been running CM7 for weeks without a single issue. As a matter of fact it keeps getting better. I'm not gonna talk up CM7 but I will say if that other user cannot get more than 2 hours without a freeze or having to reboot, then he is doing something wrong. I have tried Perception (beta2), and C5 RC3.. both are nice. Especially if you want a samsung ROM with all the features you are used to. CM7 is completely different built from AOSP. IMO, they are all really stable to use on a daily basis. Again, if my phone was freezing or needing a reboot every couple hours i would NOT be telling you they are stable.
All the 2.2 ROMs are sweet.. all user preference. Like the quarlow said, make sure you read the OP and re-read the instructions. Bootloaders are something you don't want to F up But, CM7 just got easier, and you don't have to flash any i9000 bootloaders.

I take no offense, that's why I said there are probably a hundred people that will disagree with me ... the kernel game is not a game I enjoy. I have never had trouble until I had a ROM with OC enabled, and got the sleeping death, flashed a different kernel, and got freezes, general buggyness, and FCs. I ended up downgrading to the older non-oc version to avoid the sleep death, and had no problems. I have only flashed a kernel a few times before that, and because of that experience none since. Maybe my experience was a fluke ...
I have never tried CM7 because the last time I looked at the installation instructions I didn't feel I understood them well enough ... because of how different it was to the FroYo ROMs of the time (Recovery then install ... 2 steps). Looking at it now, it's not nearly as unusual after all the i9000 GB ROMs. I really have had bad stability with the i9000 GB ROMs. Not that it freezes every two hours, but after two hours of constant use it freezes, and needs a reboot, or every once in a while while listening to music the music stops and I look at my phone to see it have rebooted for no reason. All of the i9000 GB ROMs I have tried did this (some worse than others): Perception, Continuum, GR, Mosaic, Symply, subpression, etc. I've gone back to Stock eclair with a Master Clear, wiped the various caches, nothing I do seems to fix this. I have attributed it to the Beta tag that is still attached to most of the ROMs. Maybe this weekend I'll give CM7 a try.

Quarlow ... I think you got a lemon..
If everything was as buggy as you make it out to be I don't think the captivate would have as much dev support as it does. Or as many flashers, If all of us are running fine on our phones and you are the only one with these huge issues that I've never even heard of (force closing from swapping out a kernel) maybe your phone has got a less than adequate component in there, inconsistent builds are a very real thing and looks like yours sucks...

How do I fix that? Go to att with "Bad GPS"? My GPS has been fine. I have a build 1006, had this on hold for me the day they released. Never had shutdown issue except that OC kernel I tried. My warranty is going to be up in a month, think I should try to swap before that runs out?
Sent from my Captivate running GR-12
I'd say so ... I have never had the issues you have. I have run every rom with every kernel, never once caused a force close and all the gb roms I've been on have been pretty stable 2 days without even charging let alone reboot.
Does your phone actually have ****ty gps cause if you use that excuse you're gonna have to prove it ... if however your phone for some "strange reason" doesn't boot at all you could use the "i was using kies and it never came on" excuse....
But if you have bad gps while on stock that should be enough to swap it out.
My GPS has always been fine. Longer time to get a lock than my iPhone before, but with 15 seconds it always gets a lock. Would I be better to go with random shutdown?

Hello xda. I've been a big selfish user of the stuff provided here for a while, as have many. I own an XPERIA X8 and it's the best phone I've ever owned (ehem.. perhaps because it's the first smartphone I've ever owned). I just wish it was a little better. I enjoyed the stock stuff for a while until my internal storage filled up too much, then I rooted and upgraded it to an easy to install Froyo ROM as it was my first time doing such things (as good as I am with programming PC's, I thought I would surely screw that up). It was great and had kept me happy for over a year, but I didn't realise how old Froyo was until I heard about Jellybean and 'Project Butter' and how it even outperforms old versions of Android. I've been limited in Froyo to relatively basic stuff anyway so I thought since I'd basically installed an android version only one step up from the stock Eclair, there'd be a lot of better versions out there.
This is where my nightmare begun. Since I already had xRecovery, I thought the process would be as simple as "download rom, install in xRecovery". A bit too ambitious, I ended up "soft bricking" my phone and having to fix it by going back to Eclair. Then, somehow, I could not even root the damn thing under the guidance of any tutorial. It's like it suddenly caught an immunity. After ages of meddling I managed to do so and get to the next step. Then the problem occurred that Superuser wasn't kicking in and allowing anything root access. I also had problems getting a new kernel on the phone and ended up only managing to install some random kernels I wasn't even sure supported the rom I was trying to install. I had some more problems trying to install CWM and it was around then I noticed another occurring problem. Apparently for installation of Jellybean, I needed to unlock bootloader, which apparently can't be done on devices with a certain version of motherboard. Mine is 11W41. I heard that this sometimes doesn't matter depending on the specific version, but after all the problems and reading up how hard it would be to recover from a problem if it occurred. So after a long time not finding alternate solutions, I decided to go for something lower.
Ice Cream Sandwich apparently had a similar problem, but I didn't spend long looking (by that time it was really late at night and I just wanted to at least get rid of Eclair again). Eventually I installed Gingerbread, which managed to work well... the second time I tried. The first time I mucked something up and ended up going back to Eclair yet again. Well, now I at least have the GingerXperia Revolution V3 rom installed, but I'm still wondering if this is the best I can do according to the X8. So yeah, that's the rant of my nightmarish story, but this is, ehem, a Q&A... so my question is, before I get too settled with my current phone set-up, is there any better option for my phone? Have I misunderstood some things and I actually do have a way of updating my kernel in order to install a better rom? From a rom, I obviously just want a well-packed version of android (Froyo was way to simplistic, having very few options to improve the experience), which is fast and suitable for every day use. As a bonus I would like it to be swappable so I can increase the RAM with SD memory and increase internal storage size (even with the ability to move apps to the SD, the phone fills up way too fast). I'd be very surprised if I've managed to pick the best way to upgrade my phone.
I know this heavily depends on opinion, so I just want to hear it. If there is better things I can do to it, I could do with a point in the right direction!
i honestly read that long post. welcome to xda mate.
tbh, i haven't tried that particular rom yet. so i can't tell you rom is "better" (which is subjective, if you ask me), so i'll try to answer the other points in your post.
since you have a locked bootloader, we're limited to roms, apps, and tweaks. a different kernel would do wonders to your phone, but since that's out of the question i think the best way to go is how to improve performance using other methods. please note that whatever i write here is my opinion. other users may think differently.
apps: i use mounts2sd for swap and a better alternative to our native app2sd feature. greenify is another app that is getting great reviews, though i try to not use task killers as much as i can. if you're into mobile gaming chainfire 3d is another app you could use.
tweaks: crossbreeder and v6 supercharger. i've personally used (using CB right now) try them and see. remember to make a backup to be safe.
that's all i can think of in short notice. i'm sure there are others and you just need to look in xda more. also, try a couple of roms before you get settled on one.

If there is better things I can do to it, I could do with a point in the right direction!

why made you think that you needed to post that bolded part?
just read....read....read...the rom threads and use the search button

Maybe I was feeling sociable and friendly and wanted to share my story? Why made you think that you needed to quote and bolden it?
And what do the threads and search functions have to do about anything? Im asking for help specific to my phone and what I've done to it, so unless you're gonna help I just dont see the logic in going into all this effort to reply to my topic. I mean really, don't bother, I'm not worth it...
@cascabel
Installed that mounts2sd but on launching it I got a message about root permissions not being granted. It's a common problem I'm noticing. Only some apps achieve root access. I think the problem might be to do with an outdated SU binary, but the topic for the ROM said not to update it after installing. I updated it beforehand but the ROM must have its own binaries or something.

you asked for some help...but did you search or read other people's posts before that?
that was my point...:silly:
if you're using superuser, try switching to supersu. the update the binaries. it should work then
btw, i'm not sure but i think swap is only for custom kernels. my bad.

Yes, asking for help, not info. The help would be specific to my phone, rom, lack of bootloader unlock etc
I did manage to flash a new kernel with flashtool but only certain ones work and im not sure why.
However I installed crossbreed as suggested and it was successful, so thats nice. I'll try some more suggestions later.
Hi Everyone,
I've been lurking here and there reading threads on how to root, remove bloatware, and return to stock on my Captivate. This forum has been a HUGE help and for that, I'm extremely thankful for all of the hard work it goes into doing the hard work.
However, I'm out of questions with easy answers and hope ya'll can help me out.
As stated, I have an AT&T Captivate. I use this device for one purpose and that's to play Kabams Kingdoms of Middle Earth. That's it, nothing else. This game used to play well on my Captivate, but it has upgraded beyond the phones capabilities. On the Captivate, the game runs EXTREMELY slow and crashes frequently. You tap on something and it registers 10 seconds later. I know it's a low RAM issue as a LG 925 has no problems running the game at all.
I've rooted the phone and used Titanium backup to remove many items I don't need. It's helped a little, but not to the point of still being useful.
My question pertains to what other ROMs I can use. I see some posts regarding NeatKernel. My problem is unless it's simple point and click like Odin, I'm uneducated in this matter. So I'm really hoping there is something I can download and use Odin to flash.
Can ya'll help?
Thanks,
Tim

Custom ROMs aren't installed through Odin, you'll have to flash them through recovery. There's a good guide in the stickies to get you started (read, read ,read!!!).
Good thing though, as long as you follow the OP's instructions, it should be very easy.
I've heard great things about GamerzROM, I believe it is a JB ROM, which runs nicer on the Cappy than KK anyway.
Note though that there's a point where software can only do so much. Hardware has to keep up too.

I have to say: it's kind of overhyped to be honest. My extSD just died the other day, and I took the chance to test out the ROM. V4 is really unstable, and it doesn't come with a pre-config-ed kernel like the i9000 version does, so you're on your own in that front. V3 is pretty sluggish, like most JB roms.
@OP
Pick from one of these:
Slim 4.2 - Probably the fastest non-GB ROM IMO. Semaphore and GearKernel is the only kernel still available (most others like Glitch no longer has a working mirror IIRC), and Gear itself is based on Semaphore, so expect similar performances. What Gear has in its favor is the range of governors and schedulers available, so you can play around to see which one delivers the best performance.
CyanAOSP 4.2.2 - CM Base. The SN base feels significantly more sluggish, but gaming performance seems to be the same. Does not play nice with Semaphore and Gear (breaks ALL video playback), so you'll have to use the author's own Semaphore fork - CyanCore.
Cyanogenmod 7 - Fastest ROM for this device. Your game might not support Gingerbread though.
Kernel setting:
Performance + BigMem + SIO. You can switch Performance for SmartAssV2 if you want to save battery while not running the game.
