[Q] Seeking Android 2.3 with OC run on SD that can display PDF....

I love the fact I can drop a SD card into my Nook and change the whole thing. But one thing I could use a help. I want to put something on that will mainly allow me to read PDF's I possess, keep notes and if I could, even write on the PDFs. But it's got to be all on the SD card, I don't want to flash my nook. I figure there's something that fits this description, I could just use a little help pointing me in the right direction.
I'm still learning a lot about all this Android business. Including the market place and such. I'm very new to all this. Thank you everyone.

That's exactly why i FIRST got my NC - just for PDF. About a day later i started hacking it but that's beside the point ;-)
NC's stock PDf reader is definately nicer than kindle (ha ha) but leaves a lot to be desired. I tried umpteen readers, but by FAR the best is ezPDF (it is a pay for app, but really, for a couple of bucks). the only issue is that default is fullscreen which nixes the soft buttons (but then again you only need these to get out of reading a file), and this behavior can be altered in the settings, or you can use softkeys (which really you need anyways for other naught fullscreen apps)
I have a huge library of PDFs that i need to keep synced for work - I use a PC program called viceversa for syncing across desktop, laptop, encypted portable drive etc. I also use this program in combination with SAMBA on the NC to sync PDFs between my PC and the NC over wireless. This preserves folder structure and everything, It's a beautiful seamless solution.

There are now instructions surfacing for transferring CM7 to an SD boot - but with the speed this is changing that might be premature.
I use Nookie Froyoy as my stable backup. It is very easy to transfer apps and settings between the installs using titanium backup and samba (slower, but easier!!!). the disadvanatage of Froyo is that it does not work on anything bigger than an 8gb card, and you lose some space to the system.

I' also a happy user of the Ezpdf reader. You can add notes, underline or cross out portions of the text and save them to the actual pdf. Very stable and easy to use.

I'll have to look at ezPDF then. A friend of mine was showing me a PDF reader that allowed him to write notes on the PDF and I forgot what it was called but it was also on the iPad, not Android. Figures that Android would have an equivalent or at best, it's the same app just ported to both platforms.
The main issue I'm having now is that I'm currently using this image on my nook but I'm finding that I'm having problems with email and GChat (chat doesn't seem to work at all and email is erratic at best)
I like honeycomb but it seems like it's still not quite ready for prime time. Plus the one SD build available (This one) Hasn't been updated in a couple weeks, not that it needs to be, but I had problems with it as well.
In general, I like the idea of a Nook color running custom android software but I'm still new to all of this, period, so I'm stumbling over a lot of things.
Hopefully the CM7 I've been reading about will come with a SD version I can test drive soon.

I use the same SD bootable image with no problem whatsoever. Very stable [and fast if you use the overclocked kernel-1.1Ghz is fine]. Email works without problem though I haven't tried GChat yet.
Btw be sure to try RepliGo Reader too. It's a bit faster than the Ezpdf but lacks the nice interface.

[Q] Help a total Nook/Android noob

Long story short: I bought my Nook to root it. I'm not a complete moron, but I'm a little overwhelmed by all of the options for modifying the Nook. I have tons of iOS experience since I have an iPhone business on the side, so I'm not afraid to mess around with something.
The problem is, the only Android device I've spent more than 20 minutes with is the Samsung Captivate, which was ridiculously easy to root and then unlock so I could sell it.
Other than that, not much Android experience.
I bought the Nook because I need a portable device to view documents and the occasional entertainment. I'm a pilot and instantly recognized the advantage of being able to take aviation publications with me everywhere, including the cockpit. I considered the iPad since I'm intimately familiar with iOS, but the cost was a little higher than I wanted to go.
So, here's what I need: a VERY stable Nook that can efficiently read PDF files, H.264 movies and still maintain respectable battery life. I will be heading overseas with less than dependable access to internet, so I need something that's pretty worry-free since I might not be able to worry with finding a fix online.
Where to start?
I've already rooted it using AutoNooter, but it seems wonky at best. The N button rarely works at all and SoftKeys isn't much help either. I currently haven't found a way to go "back" in the Market app, and still haven't figured out how to sign in on my YouTube account.
So, what are your suggestions for setup? Please be detailed with your suggestions and save the flaming for someone who cares.

I didn't like the stock rom either...
I went immdiatly to nookie froyo, which is the most stable rom other then stock.
You should try it.
You should also try cm7 and it varients, but those are less stable.
you can check out the tutorials on remapping the volume keys for back and menu, although I find soft keys a valiable option.

Can you point me to the best method of install for Froyo? Is it better on internal or keeping it on the SD card? I'm not worried about warranty or restoring the stock ROM, so which one is best overall?

Try it on the SD card first, just to start. If you screw up, you can just format the card and start over, it's relatively pain free that way. But it will run a little snappier on the actual Nook eMMC, but you can always do that later.
Another factor is that B&N will be updating all Nook Colors to Froyo in April. If you run off an SD card until then, then you can root the Nook after that update (with new Autonooter built for that new update), and you will have a more stable Froyo since it will be a professional kernel built for the hardware.
You'll need a Sandisk Class 4 or 6 uSD card or a Transcend Class 6 (unless you have already bought something, in which go ahead and try that card).

Yeah......about that "don't flash the internal memory" part.....
Everything went great until I rebooted and now its stuck at the Android screen with the flashing cursor.
Now I'm just trying to figure out how to restore it. Ugh.
I'm using a 32GB SanDisk SDHC Class 6 card, BTW.
EDIT: Well, I was able to get the build from your link running from the SD card, but all of the processes suddenly and continually fail. All I get is pop up after pop up about errors.
I'm done screwing around with this for today. If I can't get something usable by tomorrow night, I'm selling this POS and getting an iPad. This isn't worth it just to save $100.

I don't know what all you did to the internal memory, but chances are this will work to get back to stock.

Softkeys works, and I use it, but it's...not intuitive...this page made things clear for me. Reading through this should get your n key working and whatnot.

Disabling the service in the softkeys settings was good for me. That stupid little button was always in the wrong place no matter where I put it and wasn't useful anyhow. I also didn't install home switcher or whatever. If you get your n button set wrong, you can just clear the defaults from the app settings for whatever app is set to the n button.

A note on those instructions: youtube did nothing but crash on me. The purpose of logging in with youtube is to get your device linked to your google account so you can get into the market. I didn't use youtube, i think i used gmail or the market itself or something. I don't remember. I just uninstalled youtube, you don't need it. Youtube video's still download and play in the default video player if you visit youtube.com from the web browser.
As far as your options for operating systems. I haven't used froyo, and haven't spent much time with honeycomb, so grain of salt and stuff. Plus it really depends on what you need/want.
Note: after booting a fresh burn for the first time, just walk away for five minutes. I'm not sure why (maybe something to do with the not quite jit doing it's thing?), but it will be more stable if you do.
Froyo gives flash and slightly better performance over stock. I think video is on par with stock, but it could be worse, i'm not sure. It's almost certainly not better. I can't speak for stability, as I haven't tried it. I think bluetooth is possible but not realistic? I know occip got the chip responding, but I haven't seen anything indicating it's useable. Links in previous posts so i won't make another.
Cyanogenmod gives all that froyo gives plus bluetooth support. Video framerate is poor (movies, not games and whatnot). Stability isn't as good as stock. Mostly it's fine but every once in a while things start force closing like mad and i have to reboot. Also battery life isn't good with cyanogenmod. Sleep has been disabled as there is a bug with it. It will still last over a day without a charge though. It's what i use day to day. Really amazing and fast moving. Seems like every day a new major bug is fixed or a whole new piece of hardware is working. Linkie:

Honeycomb is really cool and it's amazing what deeperblue did (without much source omgwat?) but it's still kinda just a toy until google releases all the source code. No flash, no hardware accelerated video, no bluetooth, no reason to use it, other than aesthetics. Annoying ui glitches in portrait mode. Neat and worth an sd burn to play with, but not for using day to day in my opinion.

P.S. If you just want it to work and be a full tablet it might be worth the extra $150 or so for an IPad. The nook has been fantastically useful for my needs and I don't think i've had this much fun with a piece of kit since my first apple II. On the other hand I've wasted a fair number of hours reading about and "bricking" the thing so...ymmv depending on what your needs/wants are.

Even I do habe only CWM 3.0.0.6 and like to have the newest one (3.0.1.0) and Iam using right now the Phirmod V5.1
Has anyone some hinds? Cheers

Can you elaborate on "can't change permissions"? Can you not find the option, or are you making the change and its not working?
For your clockwork upgrade question, is your recovery internal, or on a bootable SD?

I'm still going to try Nookie since the general consensus is that it's the most stable. I don't care about BT or even Flash since I'll just be using this mostly for mobile document viewing in Afghanistan.

Well, this is the first forum I've ever seen that operates that way.

Well, just tried running Froyo from the SD card and it just sits at the Android splash screen (the animated one). It also did this last night, but I thought it was because of the non-functional Froyo I had flashed internally.
I guess I'll give HC a shot to see if anything actually works on this device.

Just ran HC and although I finally got past the "decrypted data" error (after three re-images and flashing, no less), I dunno.
I'm going to try rooting the stock 1.1 again and see how that goes. If I can't get comfortable with that, then I'm done. I have better things to do besides sitting around for hours and hours trying to get something to be remotely practical for every day use.
If I wanted a tinkering project, I'd buy an old car.

Autonooker is super easy to get the stock ROM working as an Android tablet.
I'm sure it's stated on the wiki that Nookie Froyo and other ROMs are in development and not meant for stable systems.

Good news! Looks like perseverence pays off because rooting 1.1 seems to have worked perfectly this time.
I am fully signed in on YouTube and email, and all the buttons are working properly.
Now that I've finally gotten that out of the way, is there a way to OC the stock ROM? Its not really a need, just curious LOL. I've seen SetCPU mentioned a few times, but IIRC its intended for 2.2 and up only. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, best PDF reader for stock ROM?

Get a Terminal Emulator from the Market. Now type in the following:
If running off SD

Install a new launcher, such as Zeam, Launcher Pro, or ADW. I prefer Zeam myself. Then you'll be able to immediately see new apps you've installed.

[Q] Backup Data for Updates

Okay I apologize beforehand if this has been answered somewhere else in the forums. I don't have much time to look around on the forums like I used to.
I have an HTC HD7 and I like to keep my phone up to date and whatnot, but I've been reluctant to because of all the data I lose when I do the updates. Things like contacts aren't an issue, but the Zune Marketplace doesn't reinstall your apps like the Android Marketplace did. As well as loosing all of my apps, my music is gone as well. Which with my very large music library, it gets to be a huge hassle to pick out the music I want on my HD7 each time a new update comes out, whereas with Android It was all stored on my SD card and nothing was lost, the same issue for my pictures. Also I've read a bit on XBMod's cab sender, and it seems like none of the developers seem to use it, that or they're having problems with it.
So, with that said, I was wondering if there were any apps or workarounds to back up my apps/music/pictures on my phone and restore them post update.
Any sort of help or direction is greatly appreciated.

If you update officially, via Zune, then everything is retained. It is only if you go down the route of Hard/Soft SPL'ing and using custom made ROM's that you have that issue. It is also probably fair to say, that if restoring everything post update is a pain/bothers you, then perhaps following the route of Customs ROM's and multiple, quick updates is not for you?

I know that, and the hd7 isn't exactly my first rodeo, I started with my touch pro 2 and got addicted and developed ORD xD. Since then ive had an HTC aria, and a dual boot hd2. Now with my HD7 I still share the passion, ive just noticed that it's a bit more of a hassle because of the way the OS works. I will continue to update either way, but I was searching for an alternative route to post flash restoration. Its mostly the music that I wish I could keep, because as I stated I have a HUGE collection.

I hear yeah I wish more rom cookers would issue update cabs as well as a fresh install nbh file. I've mentioned it in dotcompt deepshining rom thread since he has the xbox/yuki certa cooked in. That way nothing is lost, it updates just what need to be just like Zune does.
On the other hand there is a program that backs up 3rd party apps but that's only for like save data and ****. You would have to install the app first... For instance angry birds progress. That way you don't have to do it all over...

Yeah, that would make things simpler. Lol and i saw that, but it wasn't what im looking for. I really just want a way to easily reinstall my apps, and music without having to find them all or going through my collection every time. Cause out of the whole process, if you use your phone as your mp3 player like i do then you'll end up spending a lot of time doing the same thing.

you can put the music of your choice in the Music Folder (Windows 7) and check sync all items in Zune. In this way you wont have to prepare the music collection time and again.
I use this method for retaining my music, videos and pictures. I have prepared a list of apps I always use and it takes my 20-30 minutes to download and install, but its worth the fun

That would work, but I use Zune as my primary music player. So all of my collection shows there. I was considering copying just the music I want to my laptop and using that as my "dock" for my windows phone. But I was just wanting to see what other options I had before I went to that.

I have pretty much the same issues... Me and my girl both have hd7's. Both use them for mp3 players in the cars...
I've tried making two folders and just changing th sync folder but for some reason Zune doesn't seem to recognize it that quick. Haven't figured out why but even after restarting Zune sync folder doesn't change even though settings did...
Wish Zune had options to sync two or more different devices or at least direct drag and drop from windows explorer to little phone icon at bottom of Zune.

The solution I use for quickly picking and re-syncing the music after a flash is to build a playlist in Zune specifically for the music I want to keep on the phone. Then only sync that playlist. Gets trickier for podcasts and if you download directly to the phone from Zune and "backsync" it though

First post! I just got a Nook Color from the Overstock sale and bought two as gifts for my mom and gf. I figured I'll learn all the tricks and how-to's on mine and be able to help them Christmas day. So far, I got myself a SanDisk 16GB Class 4, followed koopakid's awesome tutorial and have successfully installed the latest RC version of CM7. I ran into a bit of trouble getting the Google Apps to install, (just wound up manually adding Gmail from marketplace), and am really happy. But I have a few questions from where to go from here...
After getting CM7 off the SD card, how can I add files to the additional 15GB or so of unused data? And is it possible to do so without constantly removing my card?
I thought I read somewhere to "lock your screen" or something to prevent lag, but what does that mean?
Is it possible to download an app on my PC and install it to the Nook?
What's the best app/settings to tweak a rooted Nook?
I don't mean to be "that guy", but I didn't see a general help thing and don't understand some of the stuff I was reading earlier. Any help and advice is appreciated!

Yes, just plug your Nook into your computer via USB and then select the option in your status bar to mount as USB. It should pop up on your computer as 2 different drives one for your SD card and one for EEMC.

Yes, just download the apk file and then either transfer it over and use a file explorer to install or just email it to yourself/use dropbox.

I'm not really sure what you want here but I would suggest getting a new browser such as Opera or Dolphin first. Another good app to have is Nook Screen Recalibrate for when your screen get a little wonky.
For reading I use Aldiko.
For watch videos I use Mobo Player
And if you haven't yet download tge Amazon Appstore for a free app every day.

Yes, the cards are not specific to one Nook so you can go ahead and make them before.

So… I went ahead and tried some tweaking. And now I think my stupid is showing.
I was browsing some apps and figured I’d give the Nook Color Tweak one a go since it’s specifically made for rooted NC’s. After I downloaded & installed it, I noticed I can’t overclock the CPU, (heard it’s stable even at 1GHz) or enable USB Host Mode (so I can drag-n-drop eBooks and app files while the NC is connected to a PC). Apparently I need the “Dalingrin's OC kernel”. And that’s where I got intimidated.
I was thinking about this and I think I’m having two “issues”: 1) I’m not sure how to continue tweaking the NC and 2) since this is my first introduction to Android, I think I need to bang through some tutorials and guides for the OS itself before getting myself overwhelmed with the NC stuff. Time to research…

First off what CM version are you using? Dal's overclock kernel is included in the latest 7.1 stable.
Also, USB host mode is not dragging and dropping enabling its for connecting USB devices like flash drives to the Nook. To enable dragging and dropping on your computer just plug it in via USB and then select the option to mount as USB.

I'm pretty certain that the kernel was added around nightly 150 whitch is after the RC release. Updating is a pretty simple procedure.

Thanks KK! I did some searching for a nightly and how to flash, but I'm actually thinking about just starting from scratch if only for reference. Since I'm giving 2 as gifts this Christmas, I'd like to have a little handy document & files on a thumbdrive I can follow and get this going. I'm thinking about starting from scratch with a nightly in place of a RC and going from there.
Now I just need to figure a PDF reader that allows me to pinch-zoom.

Dualboot Questions

Hi,
I am awaiting delivery of a 32Gb Touchpad within the next couple of days and will probably want to root it fairly soon after getting it. I have rooted 2 android phones before, so rooting doesn't hold too many fears for me lol. However, I obviously haven't come across dualbooting a device after it has been rooted, so I have a couple of questions, which I have done a search for, but couldn't get any definative answers for.
First of all, am I right in thinking that on booting the device, I will end up with a slight pause during which I can choose to boot into the other operating system. Something like the way windows will pause to give you a chance to boot from the CD drive before continuing to load windows.
Also, I have noticed that Android seems to need some of the WebOS files to be able to run. If this is the case, does sharing these files slow down WebOS in any way and also will I be able to optimize the WebOS system without causing problems with the Android OS.
Any help and advice will be very welcome.

Yes, there is a boot menu that allows you to choose webOS or Android. And, no, Android won't interfere with the operation of webOS or vice/versa.

First off its a tablet not a phone so its not really called rooting. In order to have the dual boot option you need Moboot. Do some research on google and you tube. Key words your looking for, How to install abdroid on hp touchpad. You will find what you need fairly quick. If all fails private message me with your email and I will supply you with the instructions personally via email

Google YouTube for Reverend TV (or Rev TV)
He provides exellent video step by step instructions for almost all touchpad android setups

If you're a mod junkie much like myself, read up on how to enable the testing feeds in preware and do it prior to installing preware via novaterm. It may look tough, but its really easy if you follow instructions exactly. I personally always do all the web os tweaks prior to installing android, as I feel it makes for a better web os experience, as well as a better tuned fall back os if you wish to use android as a primary os. There's also an app in WebOS that allows for tweaking the boot menu called cyboot, so you can change delay time for selection, as well as pick which os will be your default boot option.

rpom: Rooting means getting access to the root of the Android OS...it doesnt matter if its a phone or tablet...even on tablet its called rooting

Well guys, my self I'm not boithered whethere it is called rooting on the device or not lol. I now have a dualboot touchpad and I must say, it was a hell of alot easier than rooting an android phone. Thank you all for your advice.
