Hi Guys,
Would really appreciate some help. My galaxy s wont turn on and gets very very hot right where the processor is i presume, just below the samsung badge on the screen. & when it does turn on i can only very faintly see the screen in a flickering blue,
So my question is, Is it worth fixing or should i just get a new phone?
Phone was overclocked at 1200Mhz if that helps.
Thanks
Boot into download mode and flash a new firmware. That should fix it, unless it's a hardware issue.
Yeah, It doesent boot at all, Just gets really hot. Maybe shows a little blue on the screen but thats it.
I think he proccessor is trying to boot constantly reading (reason for hotness) but it can't find the files to boot i think it's a corrupted file or something try flash a fresh firmware using odin it should boot and won't be hot again

I realize that it doesn't boot, but does that mean it won't boot into Android, recovery, or download mode? If it doesn't boot into any of those, you need to buy a USB Jig off eBay (or make one yourself) to get it into download mode. And if that doesn't work, you have bricked your device.
If you would provide us with more information we can give you better answers. How did your phone get into this state? A million things could cause this, including throwing your phone at a wall. If you did that, we can't help you. But if it's software related, we potentially can. So how did you get your phone into this position?

When I try to start my G1 the display just stays black, not the "stuck on g1 screen" problem, it stays black and it doesn't vibrate like it usually does when starting it.
What I did was rooting, changing recovery to amonra 1.7.0 and installing the spl_1_33_2003.zip spl update, the update was successfully as it restarted normally and started to boot. Then I wanted to get to the bootloader mode so I pulled the battery. Since then the only Reactions are the red LED when charging and the Blue LED when getting in this JTAG-Mode or whatever.
I couldn't find any thread about this problem and I already did this whole procedure on another G1 without any problems.
I really hope, that you can help me
you should have waited for it to boot before pulling the battery
it is a 2 stage install, first is preps , then it reboots and competes the flash
you have a brick now

You should not have pull the battery, that is a no no especially during the install.
Are you able to even go into any mode? IE: camera+power, etc...
Nope, no Mode works, tried every combination, it just wont start-.-

U definitely have a bricked G1.
Well if u can't get into recovery nor bootloader its a sure sign of a brick...
How charged was ur battery? My battery died one time and it wouldn't load up as well. It went from a full charge to nothing.. just a thought....
But try charging it and try to get back Into bootloader.. but don't rule anything out.
Will think more but keep us posted

Oh! Yea! Happens to mine last weekend. But mine was doing the splash screen loops.
Battery was about at 50%. Tried with another battery and everything's the same. Looks like I really bricked it-.-
Anyway, thanks for the help
Future reference when doing serious mods such as updating spl, radio always make sure you have a full charge as these things can drain ur battery pretty quick. And the last thing u want is for ur battery to die in the middle.....
Have u tried reformatting ur sdcard. ?

Why should I reformat it, it makes no difference at all if an sdcard is inside or not, and the sdcard is working without any problems

Can't get into recovery/dload mode Phone boots to white At&t screen makes few sounds
I have recently messed up my Captivate when I was trying to flash a ROM. My phone goes up to the white At&t sign and then makes a few sounds and stops. It also goes to the charging screen when plugged in the cpu when off. I have tried countless ways to get it to go into dl mode or even recovery mode. Ive tried: ADB vol up and down plus power with usb plugged in/battery put in, vol down usb plugged in/battery put in, vol up usb plugged in/battery put in, just vol up and down usb plugged in/battery put in, and nothing seems to be working. WITHOUT someone tellin me to use a jig can ANYBODY please help me find a way to do this. I have even pressed menu and volume down while the phone was in off charging state with green bar loading and the cpu made a sound and cpu said unrecognized device...from there I have tried to root my phone hoping it goes into recovery mod(which ive done to fix my phone before) also from there i have tried odin but no recognizance and I also have tried adb reboot download and adb reboot recovery. NOTHING WORKS...someone please HELP ME!
thanks in advance
What rom were you trying to flash?
why SO resistant to someone telling you to make/buy a jig? its a very easy thing to make and it will solve your no download mode issue in seconds. if nothing else will get you in download mode a jig will for sure (unless your usb port is broken) you can try and exhaust all other solutions but after you've ripped all your hair out build a jig.
its like trying to dig a ditch with a garden spade when you have access to a back hoe
Good point
stud u really make a goop point about it being easier to buy a jig than to pull ur hair out. Which if this kid really was pulling his hair out he shouldn't have been doing this at all. But, I am also having this same problem. I was using a CM7 build and it worked great until i tried to install the gapps. then it went crazy. It rebooted itself and went through the Cyanogen Mod first screen then would get stuck on the CM7 blue android on skateboard bootscreen. If I touched the screen at the bottom right it would vibrate for some reason. Shortly after realizing I needed a jig for it I decide to buy a new one cause at the time I didnt know if I could properly make one. So I've kept my first captivate still trying to find a non-jig method. I recently taught myself begginers adb on Windows XP OS but I am very much a noob except for rooting and flashing. Any help of yours would be great anytime. Thanks,
Matt

Shows that youve been a member since Dec-2010 so Im assuming that you really did try everything because you have read and read and read (riiiiiiight!?) and without telling us whether you tried to flash a Froyo or Gingerbread ROM I'd sugguest that you buy a JIG. Its really the best solution and the less time consuming if you cant think of anything else to try. You can order one or make your own...literally took about 30 minutes for me to get my phone to a place where i can work with it....a trip to the radioshack and making the JIG and back home.
If you are making requests on specifically NOT to tell you to do it a certain way then you may have to accept that you might have to solve this problem on your own, especially if you said that you tried everything except the one thing that you cant do (which is what we might suggest) and probably will fix your situation.
So i re-read after making my first post to this. I've bought my 5th Cap. now and have quite a bit more knowledge than before. So my question is. If I've completely bricked my 3rd cap... No battery charge screen and all will a jig still work for me to get into download? I was tryin to come back from cm7 but something went wrong.... I really don't need the extra phone but it would be nice to have my back up

If the screen doesnt turn on at all and there is no charge screen or recognition at all of usb than it is more likely then not hard bricked.

What were you doing before it bricked? ie. Were you flashing something, using it to hammer nails, or mixed it up for soap in the shower?

I wanted to install cm-9-20120804-NIGHTLY-captivatemtd on the device. Actual the installation was successful then when i was trying to restore my backup. it now stoped in d process of installing boot sector. after which remove the battery to start again. that was when it started showing that. actuall when i press power to on it doesn't respond but it only show the display when i plug my charger or usb to computer.
I had exactly the same problem. Use a program called one-click unbrick, that will get your phone back into download mode. After that you can use odin to restore stock. Watch out though, I was very happy when this all worked and I booted into stock only to find out that restarting the phone would brick my phone even worse than it was before. Now the computer wont even pick it up at all and it is stuck in a white at&t bootloop screen when I turn it on. When it is plugged in, all I get is a grey battery that isnt charging and it will not go into download mode. I don't know what I did wrong so I cant tell you how to prevent this problem so just be careful.
A jig would likely be your best option to force your phone in download mode.
If you haven't tried it already, try flashing a stock rom using Heimdall. I've had much better luck using that program than Odin with my own phone.

droy... The problem you're describing is exactly what happened to the first cappy I had, fortunately for me, I did it within a week of getting the phone.... I took it to an AT&T service center *aaack*, they were nice enough to tell me that there was nothing they could do and that I should be able to get it sent back in. Fortunately for me, it was right around the time when the 2.3.5 stock update came out and there were a few other people that were having somewhat similar problems. To try and fix it, I tried the jig, which I constructed myself only, ran the meter tests and found out that it didn't work after trying 3 different ones. I sent it back and got another, fortunately, I haven't ran into the issue again, so I think it may just be some kind of fault on the board given that I've never read of anyone else until now running into the problem
Thanks youall, gr8 help
Hi guys. My SGN is permanently freezing while booting. Suddenly the red lines appear and phone is stucked. It stucks on boot logo, or boot animation, or after successfull boot into system. It looks like this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/61718936/IMAG0003.jpg
Phone becomes quite hot on the back near camera.
I bought phone with stock 2.3.6. It was running for about 2 hours and i made OTA update to 4.0.4. It started to reboot itself while i was using it. So thought, i might use custom ROM to get rid of this freezes and reboots. But no change. Even on 4.2.1. I reverted back to 2.3.6. I noticed, that these red lines changes and moves (or even whole screen becomes red) while i'm twisting or pressing phone on various places. So i think, there is cold solder joint somewhere on motherboard. Maybe on graphic chip, because i didn't notice this problem while in recovery or download mode.
Can anybody help me with this problem, or point me on right place to look at on motherboard? Thanks in advance.
Seems to be defective device. Check with service center.

If you're able to, run this app to check for errors, I take it you have root. If it crashes mid scan, you've got problems with your emmc.

Frozen Note
I hope you will find a solution for your problem.
But I have to admit I had to smile ("grinsen" in German is a much better word for it) when I saw your title:
Freezing even when >30°C
i'm not able to run device anymore but i already tried this app for checking emmc and this is the one with that bug. But it doesn't matter, because i was flashing only safe kernels, and i don't think this emmc is problem. I think the culprit is graphic chip, or CPU, or CfRF (Chip for Random Freezes)
I was not able to find any similar problem. Tomorrow, i will try to put device into download mode, flash any custom safe kernel with CWM, leave device in this recovery, and see if it freezes again. If yes, the only option is to get device warmer for a few degrees (300-350°C with my heat station haha ) and i will see if there was any cold solder joint. If not, device will be dead anyway so i have nothing to lose

guys i've made a small progress. I put a pressure on back side of the phone near camera, and i turned the phone on. It successfully booted to system. When i stopped pushing phones back, red lines appeared immediately and phone freezed. When i start to twist phone in hands, lines were getting bigger or smaller. When i pressed the back cover again, lines disappear (but phone was still frozen).
So now my task is, to find out, which chip is badly soldered.

You guys started having strange issues with ur notes. Maybe its something like a self destruct programmed on your phones so that after a year or two people will switch their phones. Besides the bigger the phones are getting the more issues they are having.
A phone should be like a device that shouod work flawless, in case of emergency one is needing to make a call and found that the phone freezed.
Sometimes i blame everything to android. Despite years of open development. Its yet not stabilizing, i guess because of it being open source vendors are putting crap in it making it more vulnerable to issues.
I dont rely on android rather i use a cheap phone for calls and text or iphone. Its just good for internet, ebooks, movies, music and camera.

Try pulling out the battery and then let the phone dry like a pair of wet socks. Clean the contacts and fit any loose thing that there may be.
Check your cable, if is loose or not, this way you could find if there were any unwanted sparks applied on the device.
Notice how it gets hot when is plugged in and you're using it? the battery reaches quickly 55 degrees which is not optimum, wait to cool to below this temperature.
My condolences in this sad event. Take care.
Hello developers,
Suddenly my note cant start any more, it shows the Samsung logo and then turn off.
in rare cases it will continue to the splash screen but then quickly turn off. ...
what would this be,,, a soft brick,,, a hard brick,,, or a battery problem,,,,

Easiest way to make sure it's not a battery problem is just to buy a new one from ebay and eliminate the possibility.
But it sounds like an internal problem to me, not software related. You could try a wipe.

I did a factory reset ( I was on JB then) and didn't solve the issue. when the phone is connected to the charger it can go beyond the Samsung logo and the splash screen for a while but will turn off quickly. without a charger it will only show the Samsung logo and then turn OFF.
Can you go into recovery, plug the cable, and then power off the phone? leave it like that for few minutes.
I can go into the download mode but not recovery.... what does that mean???? Tried your other suggestion, but no luck...!!
Is your battery swollen if looking at the side and you say it will go past splash screen if plugged into charger so does that mean it will boot into the Rom if plugged in or does it just stay splash screen and also if not able to get into recovery could mean something happened with the kernel so flashing a fresh jb Rom with Odin maybe what you need. The problem with that is if your battery is bad it could cause more problems trying to flash anything with dead battery as in bricking the device. So you should start with new battery and let charge a few hours then see if your phone boots up if not then you could flash with pc Odin and go from there.

He should try kernel option you gave him, if everything else failed. I read around there were like 3 people with same situation. Maybe they used the same thing?
Search philz kernel, download one or two, and flash those in odin. Its a safe kernel, and powerful cwm.
He probably fixed by now. Hope so, for his own good.
