Help!!! Urgent!!! RFS to EXT4 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so I have the exact problem like the guy in thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305953&highlight=convert+rfs+to+ext4
now, I lost my root capability too, how to fix everything up? I am at semaphore kernel btw, tried reflash semaphore kernel, failed, what should I do now? flash XXJVT using odin again? or?

The guy in that thread fixed the issue by making more space in /system. Now if you lost root it will not be possible for you to do that. If you tried reflashing kernel and it didnĀ“t work, then flashing stock JVT may be the solution.

thanks for the tips!! is that the only way? it is possible to flash to other kernel? such as galaxian? is it safe?
edit: and that guy lost his root too, how do he fix is in the end?

You can try to flash other kernel, like Galaxian, and later with Titanium backup, delete useless system apps like allshare, aldyko, to empty space in /system and then move to ext4. Anyway I think it is better to start from scratch, clean flash stock JVT, flash a kernel to have root and CWM, and then (you will be bloatware-free) move to ext4.

I've already flashed a kernel from Chainfire>>>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
still, in About Phone, the kernel changes, but still there is no root permission, will try galaxian now and see how

not working too, will flash xxjvt now using odin

Im starting in the rooting process, im currently on Phoenix 2.5, before i flashed this rom i made a backup rom with Clockwork, i decided to restore to stock using clockwork, but it failed on me and i fear that my phone was bricked. I flashed again the phoenix rom, but i want to return to my stock rom, but i dont know why, i just want to flash darkys rom, but i dont know how to restore back to stock, if i use odin by default i have to do the master clear, please help me, i dont want to be stuck on this rom.

#1: Are you disabling Lagfix before flashing? If not, that may be your problem.
#2: Prepare to be flamed for posting in the devs section with a Q&A post.

POST IN THE RIGHT SECTION (I guess I had to do that, right??)
To answer your question - Gr8danes is right, you should be disabling your lagfix to restore your backup first.
Do this by going into your /sdcard/voodoo directory - Create a folder named "disable-lagfix" and reboot your phone. You will hear the robotic voice reconverting your file system - this will take about 3-5 minutes.
Then proceed with flashing your stock backup.
If that fails, you will have to use ODIN One Click to revert back to Eclair 2.1

So as long as the file system is restored (voodoo disabled) you CAN nandroid back to stock? Awesome.
thanks a lot, and sorry for posting in the wrong section.
Suppose everything fails, when i decide to use ODIN, do i need to do the master clear?

no you do not need to master clear
also, the nandroid doesnt backup the KERNEL or the MODEM so you will likely get a bootloop after trying to restore your stock backup. in order to get back to stock, the best option is ODIN.
im using clockwork, i did the backup with clockwork

yeah, clockwork doesnt backup/restore the stock kernel+modem for you (one of its downfalls on this phone it seems). thats a manual process. the other option is to use the JH7 stock+rooted rom, thats designed for clockwork
But if i disable the lagfix, and do the restore using clockwork, it will fail? I MUST USE ODIN?? If i have to use ODIN, whats the point of doing a backup stock rom?

dont know of any links. i just know in my testing that is what happened.
if you look at a backup done in clockwork, there are the following files created:
cache.img
data.img
datadata.img
nandroid.md5
system.img
if you are flashing from a 2.2 rom to a 2.1 backup, you will get caught in a bootloop because you still have the kernel from 2.2, as cwm doesnt backup the kernel for our phones. if you flash a 2.1 kernel, via clockwork, or odin, your backup will boot up, but you will probably get FC's on a lot of things, because the modem is still a 2.2 modem, and causes instabilities. if you then flash a 2.1 modem, your backup will boot up without any issues. the best way to deal with this is to keep a 2.1 kernel and 2.1 modem CWM flashable zips on your sd card alongside your nandroid backup, flash the modem and kernel, then restore the backup.

It backs up apps and settings, but it isn't meant for restoring firmware versions.
If you just want to run Darky's then just flash it and skip the whole returning to stock step. It's really not necessary.

You should use the option in cwm recovery for WIPE DATA/SYSTEM RESTORE before you do, but yes.

Yes, u don't have to restore stock first before flashing another rom, but like said above, make sure to do a factory reset in cwm..
As for odin, you don't have to master clear either, you can use either odin one click or download a stock rom from samfirmware.com and use regular odin...

Here are the install instructions from the first post of the Darky's thread:
HOW TO FLASH
Place the ROM on the root of your SD card.
Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.
Open ROM Manager (Downloadable from the market)
Choose "Install ROM from SD card". If after you flash and you have problems like force closes and you can't receive calls, wipe data/cache.
Let the phone sit for 5-10 minutes after booting.
Be happy.

That's pretty much how I've done it with all the ROMs I've used for the last couple of months, except that I boot to recovery mode to choose the ROM and start the install.
ok, thanks a lot guys, i spent all my thanks for today, but the conclusion is that i can flash darkys rom on top of phoenix, restoring back to stock will be if i want to take it for warranty or something like that right?

That's my opinion. The install script formats and deletes everything anyway, so going back to stock is superfluous. Some people disagree, but as per my other post, the Darky's instructions say nothing about flashing stock.
I went a couple of months without going back to stock and in that time I flashed various versions of Cognition, Darky's, di11igaf, Assonance, Perception, Axura, Phoenix, Doc's, Serendipity and probably others I've forgotten. I only flashed stock the other day because I sent my phone back to Samsung to see if I can get one with working GPS.

abyss kernel cannot use with ics since it is a gingerbread kernel. a ics is required to have a ics kernel for it to work. what can you do is if you have a nandroid backup, just restore it using the abyss or if you are running a stock ics, just find a compatible ver of cfroot ics kernel and flash it via abyss.

First of all, if anything goes wrong, this is your safest way to not cause any additional harm to your device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18981227&postcount=4
But since your backup is not working, you don't want to employ this method right now.
So you just follow the advice of janice1234 and find a compatible (with your ICS version) cf-root kernel (v5.6!) here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26746339&postcount=7, copy it to your external sd via anything that lets you access it (e.g. adapter or another phone) and flash the kernel with abyss.
While you're in the dev section you could do some more reading, for example all the information chainfire provides in his cf-root kernel thread...

hi got all u told me just one more thing how to flash wia abyss.....dont know how to ...i know how to flash via cw recovery touch i have it but from theer cf root have .tar file and it cannot be flashed through cw recovery so how to flash cf root from recovery. thas all i need to know.
thanx
You need to download a rom that can be flashed through cwm / abyss red. Try criskelo v7 ics. Download to your pc, copy it to your SD card using SD card reader) then reboot into recovery and flash it. If you have stock ics, I would do the 3 wipes first before flashing the new rom. Make sure you are doing all of this from abyss 4.2 cwm and not ics cwm.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
Usually people run into this problem the other way around.
Anyway, once you have downloaded the .zip file there is no need to unzip it, since the .zip is exactly what you need to flash in CWM as it can't handle the bare .tar.

Bootloop on all ROMs?

Hello everyone.
For a few days I've been having an annoying issue with my SGS.
For months I've been flashing many ROMs, especially ICS ones, and I never had any problems when I followed the instructions.
But since last tuesday, I regularly get bootloops with no reason. An hour ago, I flashed Gummy 1.2 on my phone, set everything up, configured my account and everything else. Then, I put one of the latest builds on my phone, tried to reboot to recovery as usual, but it began to bootloop. I didn't flash anything new for it to happen, and I can't seem to get why it does it.
I can't access to Recovery (freezes at kernel startup screen), only to Download mode. This means I have to reflash GB with Odin everytime it happens, then CM9 back, and then a custom ICS.
It never happened before tuesday, and it seems recurrent now, no matter what ROM, Kernel or Modem I use.
I've had my phone for almost two years, is it getting used up?
I'd appreciate if somebody could help me!
Have you tried a complete wipe including format internal sd? Then flash fresh gingerbread base.

Thanks mate, really, but I have no problem flashing back to GB.
My issue is that i'm getting Bootloops without any reason.
Flashed Gummy 1.2 back, no problem since yesterday, recovery's clean for now.

Little "update". So far so good since yesterday, but could it be kernel-related?
Every time I had this issue, I ran Semaphore 1.2.2s.
Anyways, thanks a lot for trying to help me, I appreciate it, and if it happens again, be sure I'll try what you told me

did i just get the emmc-bug?

sorry if this has been asked, tried looking around but couldnt find anything looking like my problem.
this morning i updated to beerbongs paranoid android 3.00, and after that i couldnt see my sd-cart, so i thought that was the problem. but after looking around for a bit it seems that its actually emmc thats gone missing. phone still boots though (sometimes after a couple of tries though).
anyway, i used emmc brickbug check and it saying theres no problem. i tried another checker where you use a .zip in recovery, which also stated that there are no problems. but i cant mount emmc in recovery or in android. sd-card can be found in recovery, and in android when using es file explorer.
do i have a softer version of the emmc brickbug, or whats going on here? how can i fix this, if at all?

Try flashing this already rooted Gingerbread ROM from Dr.Ketan http://d-h.st/HJM and then you can do full wipe on it and later flash the ROM you want..
Its probably easier than going to ICS stock then flashing safe kernel and then the ROM you want..

i tried flashing with mobile odin and now it is stuck on samsung blue logo just keeps doing the animation over and over so i connected to pc and odin recgonized and flashed the rom again but then it is stuck on a boot loop and i tried wiping cache and factory data reset but wont work
What rom did you flash. Ics or JB. Install Philz kernel and do a wipe data reboot. If still no go then wipe system data cache and preload and reboot into download mode and flash stock rom again.

It didn't here. I went back from XXLT4 (rooted) to XXLT4 (stock non-root) using ODIN, and the problem was gone. Then I flashed PhilZ 4.93.6 kernel, and the problem was back. No connection, neither USB or Wifi. I was on a rooted stock kernel before, but have no idea what the problem was.
So, as soon as I root the firmware, the connectivity is gone.
Update: it's back. I have no idea why, I'm still on XXLT4 + latest PhilZ kernel.
Next problem: Where can I edit the newly added lockscreen shortcuts? Could it be that flashing PhilZ kernel removed that feature from the settings menu? I can't find it... and I've definitely seen it before I rooted.

Why do you want to flash Philz kernel..just root your phone on the stock kernel..JB stock kernel is bug free..
Go to settings--lock screen--swipe and there you have the option to change it on stock lock screen..do you have a custom lock screen??

Thanks! I used PhilZ because it came with cwm, built in root and was easily available.
Do you know how to go back to stock kernel without a full install? (and keep cwm and root). Something like a XXLT4 German / DBT kernel in a ZIP zile I can flash from recovery? I simply don't know where to find that.
Mybe SCS information is missing.*#1234# and view SCS code.
My CSC information is currently "N7000OXALT4" and nothing more. I was half expecting "DBT" behind that. Could that really be the problem?
Looks like I should go for a new nandroid backup & CSC reset?

Thanks, I figured that out in the meantime, packed zImage into another flashable ZIP and signed it. Now I can theoretically flash it using "mobile ODIN" (to keep root) or from CWM. It's still not the perfect solution since I would definitely want CWM. So currently, I keep running PhilZ and wait for a better solution for the lockscreen icon issue.
whats the issue with lock screen? sorry for asking but after reading the thread i got confused.
