Bionic screen repair - Motorola Droid Bionic

Ok, had a great Thanksgiving until I dropped my Bionic on concrete outside. I guess it landed on the top corner where the power button is, the glass is smashed there and partially missing with major cracks going downwards over half the screen. Miraculously, the LCD display itself is undamaged, only the outer glass. Also the digitizer is still functional. I researched the parts and found that the digitizer and outer glass are one piece on top of the LCD. I couldn't locate any teardown video showing how to take these things apart properly but I did find photos and a new digitizer/glass assembly on E-bay for only $35 bucks. I had sucessfully replaced one of these on a motorola Cliq and figured the Bionic should be easier since it lacks the sliding keyboard. I took a T5 driver and seperation tool and had it disassembeled in 5 minutes. I love how easy it is! I reassembled it until the new screen arrives, hopefully this week.
Since I couldn't find a video of the teardown (and assuming no one else has either) I would be willing to video the job when I replace the screen IF there is sufficient interest.

I would love to see a tear down video. Also where are you getting the replacement parts?

Check ebay for "Bionic digitizer"

+1 on the video. It would be very helpful.

Ok, I will post a vid to YouTube when the digitizer arrives and post the link in this thread

I cracked my bionic glass last weekend and just got my replacement screen.
I'm about ready to dig in to fix it, but in reading repair guides for other phones, it appears that the LCD could be glued to the glass. When you had yours open, did you see if the LCD is glued to the glass/digitizer assembly on the Bionic? I'm hesitant to open it up until I know since its still working with the cracks.
I paid $50 at Dealsishop and it came in 7 days.
Love to see your repair guide.

Here you guys go. The glass is not fused to the lcd fyi. Not a video but looks easy enough.

Thanks - the iFixit teardown was very helpful.
I finished and it works!
My only question is that the glass was stuck to the frame with a thin double stick tape. I tried to re-use it, but there were multiple gasket type shapes that didn't keep their shapes. What do people use for this material?

I tore down the phone once, everything but taking the glass out of the frame. The LCD was NOT stuck to the glass/digitizer. The only adhesive material I encountered was the large sticker with the IMEI numbers and such in the battery compartment. That thing actually causes the back piece and underlying piece to stick together. Felt like I was going to bend the pieces when I tried separating them because of that sticker, so I just removed the sticker first and was a lot easier.

Well I only payed $35 for mine on E-Bay, they say it's OEM part and all, lets hope its the real deal. Also, atleast in the photo, it LOOKS like it includes the entire piece, the frame around the glass and all. Did you get something a little different? Could be the photo is misleading on the E-Bay item too...we will find out soon enough.

My glass/digitizer looks the same as the one on ebay. It does not come with the frame around the glass (the part that says Verizon on the bottom). The glass is held in the frame only with double stick tape around the perimeter - works really well because it was tough to get off without damaging the frame. I'm thinking I may need to buy some of that tape and re-do it if it gets loose. Also, there were little gasket-like things around the openings that I couldn't re-use.

questions...

So I am about to order the screen and begin the replacement process. Do you think there is enough stick left in the tape to hold the screen to the frame for now? With it put back together, does it force the screen to but up against the frame without the tape doing anything? What does the gasket go around? Did you have to use any of the tools listed in the tear down (besides the t5 screwdriver)
Thanks for the help...

The tape is holding for me so far, but I don't think it is right. It's not bulging or anything, but it seems loose in spots. There are holes for the speaker and camera. I'm guessing the gaskets are to keep dust/moisture out. I used the t5 and a couple of plastic tools to separate the parts. The other thing not mentioned in the teardown is that there is a large sticker just below the battery that keeps the back from coming out. I just pulled it back halfway and it releases. Then after everything is reassembled, the sticker can be put back like new.

it's funny,
because the SAME thing happened to me...i am looking fwd to your video/tips on the replacement.
I ordered the glass, and the repair kit online 60bucks total. (prices everywhere have gone up in past 24 -48 hours!)
weird.
The local shop says they can repair for 125 bucks. So hopefully i can do this.

Done!
Ok, the digitizer/glass arrived today and after a chill with some beers I decided to take a crack at the replacement job.. so please look over my clumsiness.
I experienced the same issues as PASP10 concerning the adhesive for the glass and the slight 'bulging' after the replacement. This is a result of the replacement not being bonded to the frame as well as the original. Everything else is perfect. I will probaly be looking for a kind of epoxy to line the frame with and re-do it later.
Right now, I'm working on converting the HD video of the rebuild I did and uploading to YouTube. Once finished, I will post the link in the 1st post of this thread. Thanks all!

Thanks man. I took it back apart later .because I didn't like the "looseness" of the new glass, it was missing the adhesive of the original. I put a small bead of some Plumbers Goop adhesive/sealant around the edge of the frame under the glass since I already had a tube and it seems very close consistency to the original stuff. It worked great
As far as the original video, it was several gigabytes of HD video lol

Congrats!! Tempted to break my screen to see how easy that is. Won't do it though. May buy a broken Streak from ebay to play.
It honestly is really easy, thought it was going to be a nightmare putting it back together, but its all made so well that there isn't any other way it can fit together. Was a bit scary when one of the motherboard clips flew off when trying to get it off and I couldn't find it, but after few minutes scouring the carpet I found it. But to be perfectly honest I could have put it back together without one of the motherboard clips, it was pretty secure.
I got problem to take off gorilla glass cos is stick by glue i think... should I use hair dryier to unstick it? or any other method?
You don't need to take the gorilla glass off, the whole thing comes out together, just use the prying tool to gradually pull it away from the casing
Job done, I didnt have my new screen yet but everthing is in piece now hehe one more question guys cos after the accident the screen was broken and touch didnt work at all in mine steak did might be a motherboard fault or digitizer ? ps. dell wasnt droped... was a bit bend , dell boots normally
No really sure, but the you get a new touch screen so guessing it would sort out your problem. Mine still work even though it was broke, so not defo sure to be honest.
I just had to replace mine again. I couls see the screen but only a small part of the screen would accept touching. New screen and all is good now.
I think you will be fine.

guys need help..i got the same problem with the lcd.so fragile, dropped not even 1 foot, and there's a black spot in my lcd.when i buy the lcd and the digitizer, does it comes with the gorilla glass???or just ordinary glass?
I am not sure what kind of glass the new LCDs come with. I will say that it is super smooth and I have yet to break the new glass and it seems to be fairly scratch resistant.
Is it gorilla glass, I cannot say.
yay had broken screen all fixed now wow that was nail biteing lol
replaced mine twice - very easy once you do it the first time - follow the ifixit video and go step by step.....second time - i did not even bother with the videa - its that simple really
I dropped my streak from about 2ft and the glass didn't shatter but the LCD was a mess
Just waiting for my new lcd/digitizer/glass to be delivered from ebay. I've already stripped my streak down ready. Not sure what to use to re-stick the glass to the main frame though. Any suggestions?

Replacing Front Housing on i9020T

So i picked up a Nexus S i9020T for a price that was steal in any working condition. The screen on it is great, no scratches and I've read the thread regarding the battery door and I'm going to order the rear door from Samsung under a warranty replacement for $16.
That leaves me with the front housing ring around the screen... I see that iFixit's tear down shows them using a heat gun at that step. Is the display connected to the front housing ring with adhesive? For showing a picture of using a heat gun they were mum on exactly what it was needed to pull apart. If it is the ring connecting to the screen, will I lose all adhesive to the old ring by pulling these two apart?
Here's a link to the part below on Global Parts Direct. I'm probably going to replace the back plate with the camera lense too but that seemed self explanatory.
http://www.globaldirectparts.com/Samsung-Nexus-S-GT-I9020T-Front-Housing-p/smsng6098620.htm
I could avoid all of this via a case but I'm just not a case type of guy...
I can't really help with your question but where can you find the back piece with camera lense? I've scratched the ring around the camera lense and was trying to find a replacement.

Check the link to the website above, Global Direct parts has the midplate with and without the lense. I didn't look close enough to see if they had just the lense. They seem to be on some sort of holiday and aren't shipping right now but judging from the verbage on their website they'll be back up and running in a few weeks.
Keep the answers coming folks... Surely I'm not the only person that has "refurbed" a scratched front housing ring.
Well I ordered the back from Samsung as a "warranty" replacement. So does anyone know if theres another place other than Global Direct Parts that has the front ring? I don't see any parts available at CNN.CN or Truesupplier.com
And again if anyone knows what the glue situation is going to be like, I'd love to get some feedback on that.
Get ready for the pain of a lifetime. I replaced the front bezel on a galaxy s (they're glued the exact same way) and it is an absolutely terrible experience. I wish you the best of luck because I've seen many people crack the screen while doing so.

So how did those people reattach the screen to the bezel?
Yeah I also been wondering the same thing and from my reseach I think that its not a strong glue but rather a adhesive thats not very strong. A hair dryer on a low setting will do the samething in helping to separating the parts. You can always contact the people at ifixit to find out how it is really attach.

I work at a service and repair store and already tore mine open. The bezel around the screen is the scariest part. Its easy tho, just use a guitar pick and go all the way around the ring. It just snaps in. may help to take the back of the phone off while your doing it.

Its attached with a fairly mild adhesive, I got the screen/bezel apart on my i9023 without using any heat just leveraging it off a little at a time. If I was going to do it again I would use a little heat.
When I replaced my screen all the adhesive stuck to the screen not the bezel. I used a heat gun on low heat to transfer it over to the new screen. It worked but I couldnt get it all over. If you are going to heat it I would recommend it being fairly low, not hot enough to burn your hand.
I bought a replacement front bezel for an i9020T from global direct a few months ago hoping that it would fit my i9023. It doesn't. All yours if you pay postage, Im in Australia.

Cracked Glass Screen

A few days ago I cracked the glass screen on my Dinc. There wasn't any significant damage aside from the crack, and my LCD screen is working fine, so I ordered a replacement on Amazon thinking I could replace it. I found a screen which reviewers claimed came with the tools necessary to replace the screens, although the product did not advertise it as such. I made the order to find that the replacement did not come with any tools, and now I am stumped. Does anyone know where I can find cheap (and usable) tools to crack open my Dinc? I was hoping to finish this before I return to college in a few weeks and I'd rather not go back with a broken screen.
Thanks in advance!
Not sure what "tools" you're looking for, but there are only a few things you need to take your dinc apart (I just did this with mine):
1. T6 screwdriver to remove 4 screws on the big red cover
2. A small flat-head screwdriver to release block clips around the big red housing and pop it off. (also used to open up the ribbon cable clips)
3. small philips-head screwdriver to remove screws securing the main board and LCD
4. X-acto knife + hairdryer to remove the digitizer (the glass that you cracked)
Do yourself a favor and order the digitizer with the frame. It eliminates the need to pry the broken glass out completely. It is a little more expensive, I think I paid $35 for mine, but well worth the time and effort! All in all it took me about an hour to complete mine! BTW, I found and ordered all the parts and tools from amazon.
Sounds like you cracked the digitizer yet you ordered a new screen?

I'll vouch for this, it's the biggest headache to replace JUST the glass.
Since you already got the glass, you can go ahead and order a bezel by itself if you want... make sure you get one that has adhesive on the metal lip on the inside so the dust won't get in there

Exactly. I made the mistake of ordering JUST the screen and it was a complete headache. I subsequently ordered the frame/screen combo. Much easier.

yeah i replaced mine but now i have trouble with the touch screen not working right. It randomly registers touches on the screen. Hope you don't run in to the same issue.
Glad to hear people are having success replacing these. I have a friend who's cracked his recently and will pass this thread on to him.
I replaced my screen with the digitizer/screen combo bought on amazon for under $20. it's a pain to install, but I found a good video on youtube and used their blowdryer method to make the glue more easy to manage and allow the screen to come off in fewer pieces. Also when you put the little ribbons back into their connectors make sure you get them all the way in - I had 256 color-like graphics for a little bit until I reconnected the screen properly
I've done it multiple times. I'm not clumsy, I just got the phone broken in the first place .
While it would make it easier to get the bezel, it can be done fine with just the digitizer.
They give you all the little plastic tools you need usually.
The last time I did it I used Krazy glue instead of very thin double sided tape.
I can answer any specific questions you have when replacing the digitizer if you want.
One request I have for you:
When I put the trackball back into place I wasn't sure if I did the correct order. It still works but it looks a little more recessed then it should be. Not a big deal, but it annoys me a tiny bit that my phone isn't perfect.
Could you record the exact order in which you disassemble it? It might even help you out later

I just replaced my screen tonight with an amazon digitizer kit and my trackball is also recessed. Might just open it back up and jam some leftover adhesive underneath it. I would recommend buying the frame though as it was a bit of a b*tch prying broken glass shards and adhesive from the thing. Would also make the phone look better as well..

i dont have a cracked screen but a very banged up bezel and battery cover. i calculated it and everything will cost me a total of $35 to replace. this includes the digitizer, bezel, battery cover and camera lens. cant wait to get this done.
thanks for the info on here.
Order the digitizer WITH the housing shell. I cracked my screen, too, and ordered the digitizer/screen only and ended up damaging my housing shell. The hairdryer trick is bogus and doesn't work very well, so spend the extra $10 to get the housing.
I was going to repare the screen to resell on Ebay, but since I broke the housing, I decided to just sell the actual AMOLED screen for $40. I'll find other parts I can sell, too, such as the motherboard and camera piece. Might actually end up making more money. Ah well.
I don't use Verizon anymore, which is why I ditched the DInc. Will miss it though. I do love HTC Sense. I have a Samsung Exhibit II now.
My first time doing this was with the digitizer only. Biggest mistake of my life! I could've made it work, but I was getting it replaced since it was bricked and superglue oozing out the sides might have raised some eyebrows. Digitizer+frame, void sticker, and 2 weeks later I had a "new" dinc.

Yeah, I'm assuming it's all one piece and is the housing I'm looking for. How did you trash your screen? Did a cable tear or something?
http://www.etradesupply.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3-sm-n900a-front-housing.html
This is the part you're wanting. You can get the whole shebang for like 275. At least then you don't possibly botch the screen and need to replace it all and do the gluing etc.
****
Basically, you CAN buy just the housing, but you will have to remove all the hardware (motherboard, etc) from the back of the old one, then using a heat gun/hair dryer, seperate the glass/LED screen/digitizer from the housing, and then re-glue the glass/LED screen/digitizer to the new housing, reattaching the motherboard, etc. You also have to worry about the capacitive buttons at the bottom. And all without doing any damage. Its quite doable, but not necessarily 'easy'.
There are videos of the process all over youtube on various phones like the S3 and S4, as well as the Note 2. And I've seen one or two videos of it being done on a Note 3, however they've destroyed the glass in the ones I've seen. Its not really a recommended process for replacing the housing/bezel, and more for replacing already damaged screens.
However, if you buy the whole shebang for 275, I believe not only do you get the housing along with the pre-attached glass/screen/digitizer, you also get some of the smaller components like USB port and such as well. So you could part out the extra pieces and make up some of the cost.
Either way, there are a few options you have available, ranging from cheap and hard to fix, to expensive and super easy.
GL on the end result!
I was alittle impatient with the hair dryer cracked the digitizer before I even knew it. If you take your time it's not hard if you pay attention to the video.

This. If you have little patience, don't even attempt it. If you do, go slow, and you should be fine.
Thanks all for the advice and links. I'm rather leery of gluing and possibly messing the screen up, but my insurance plan to get a new phone is less than the completed housing cost. Maybe a case will cover it so I'm not reminded daily of how I failed as a phone parent.

That was going to be my next response, if its not bad a case is the way to go. The only reason i actually even attemped this was because the back cover wouldnt go back on correctly anymore.

Glass Replacement

Hi all,
I recently fell whilst holding my brand new N6 and cracked the screen pretty bad. The digitiser and LCD appear to work OK, so I'm taking the plunge and will try and replace the glass myself.
I've replaced the display module (glass, LCD and digitiser) for a number of family/friend's phones and feel comfortable about working with the small electronics. I've been reading and watching countless tutorials on the removal of the glass from the rest of the display assembly but and yet to find any information specifically about doing this on the N6. Specifically, I'm worried about how the speakers will affect the glass removal process.
If anyone has any N6 specific info, it would be most appreciated. I'm waiting for the replacement glass to arrive, I'll update this thread with how i get on!

with the iphone it was both the LCD and Digitizer I was replacing and they came together as one................same with the N7, both together, trying to install/remove these separately is suicide unless you have the right tools etc........
Have you bought the LCD/Digitizer toggether inside the silver bezel, I didn't, and I should have.........
basically there was a small cable on the back of the LCD/Digitizer that was present on the old damaged module, but not on the new one I had bought, I tried removing form the old and into the new, plugged in the normal power and screen cables, but then nothing, didn't work, my frustration also resulted in a small crack to the new screen.............
it possible but you need to have patience and the tools, which it sound like you do.......but its much easier already inside the silver bezel...........
the screen was glued into the bezel and removing this was murder, managed it, but had to pick out all the smashed glass bit by bit........
don't let me put you off though, you sound more competent than me........

I haven't bought the replacement display module yet for the Nexus 7. Thanks for the info, think i'll try and get one with a bezel to be on the safe side.
its definitely the way to go as you will just be popping off the back cover, releasing the ribbon cables, removing some screws, peeling back some adhesive tape and that's you.........
and any dings to the bezel will dissapear too............
Removing the LCD ribbon cable on N6 is PITA I don't want to even think how to plug in the new one. The digitizer is easy since there is lock on it but the LCD just plugs in with lots of friction.
Any tips?

Hi all,
I recently fell whilst holding my brand new N6 and cracked the screen pretty bad.

Unless you have the right equipment and lots of time buy the whole assembly.
You can watch videos on youtube how complicated is to separate the glass from LCD
£122 repair cost in UK.
Update
I'm experiencing the same problem. I've replaced the digitizers/screens on all versions of the iPhone and also on the Samsung Galaxy S4. I successfully replaced only the glass on some Samsung devices too. I'm wondering if I'll be able to do this with the Nexus 6 if I just buy the $10 replacement glass.
Thanks. Hope to hear your results soon.
EDIT: I've scoured YouTube in search of videos showing how to replace the GLASS ONLY, but I can only find videos showing how to replace the entire digitizer. So I'm desperate for any information on this. Haha.

I was reading ifixit's how to guide. They state that the digitizer is fused to the glass. Possibly that's why everyone stops at this step.....

Can I ask where this is from? I've cracked the glass, screen works fine.
yes the glass repair is possible i am uploading photos of the process i did. i do work for a cell phone repair company and this has been a very common repair. Nexus 6 glass only repair with the use of OCA (optical clear adhesive) and bonded together with an ridge to ridge lamintator and and mini autoclave.
It turns out Motorola Official repair was £128 plus the postage to send them the phone in the first place.
I am unfortunately in the same boat. I sustained probably 15 scratches that my fingernail could get stuck on them all. My phone scraped along an artificial hardwood floor when a dog stepped on it facedown and slid. So I bought some cerium oxide in an attempt to sand down and buff away the scratches. I was not successful, and it looks like I added some more scratches. I'm going to put up with them until I get more, then replace the screen & digitizer probably while also adding a screen protector. I hate the feel of screen protectors though

Impressive. What's your process for separating the cracked glass from the digitizer?
Although I'm sure the OP was asking for a way that doesn't require thousands of dollars worth of specialized equipment.
Has the OP given up on this project? I cracked my glass the other day however the digitizer still works just fine. I wanted to know if there was a do it yourself way to change the crystal without having to purchase a digitizer/crystal combo?
Thanks
