[Q] How to return to stock? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have not flashed a ROM yet, but when I do how would I go back to stock? I made a CWM backup of being stock rooted, but I want to know of another way to go back. When I had the AT&T Galaxy S2, all I had to do was flash the tar file in Odin. I searched the development section and only found modified KJ4(2.3.5) and KKA(2.3.6) ROMs. I have the Polish Note if that matters.
Edit: I think I may have found the right way to go back to stock KKA. Just by placing the stock zimage using Chanfires method ^_^
Edit2: Meh figured it out

Edit3: Need confirmation on correct way to return to stock, as others have the same question.

Get the stock rom and reflash it.

Yeah I definitely know that part, I'm more concerned about the way of doing it.
I heard that flashing through Odin would cause the yellow triangle as it would set off the flash counter... Can please you link me to the stock ROM that is flashable through Odin if this isn't the case? OR an alternative method besides the one I posted above.

I do in fact have tha same questions. I even went off topic in a ROM release thread about it.
I'm a longtime HTC user and with long time i mean since like 2002ish. I have no fear to mess around with HTC stuff since I know my way around and know exactly how to brick it, if I really want to ;-)
Things look different with the Note thought. The recovery doesnt stick but is kernel dependant, Odin seems to be similar to HBOOT but shouldn't be used since it tells Sammy what one did to its device. Flashing can be done by this that or another way, it all looks so weird and chaotic to a HTC camper... lol.

Cheers guys for the great info .
ive been following this thread for a while now , and i would like to suggest to the experts , if possible , to make a full step by step guide for how to revert to stock (including the whole stock kernel re-flashing process for different note models) bcos to be honest , i think many of us have this same question and are hesitated as the whole process sounds confusing.
i could be one of them as this is my first samsung device , coming from HTC Desire HD ,where flashing and development for samsung devices (as far as i know) is quite different from that on HTC devices.
Thank you again for the efforts , would be highly appreciated to get that guide post up.

Yeah he did update it. That's where I got the idea about just using Chainfire's Initial Root Flasher and placing the zImage in that folder. On the bottom of the OP, he put
Now How I can revert back to Stock ROM/Unroot (In case of replacemet may i need)
I you have Just rooted only but not added CWM - Just Download this Extract - Execute - Rum Me unroot.bat
If You have Root + CWM - then first find out original stock kernel (zImage file)
Now place this file in zImage folder, n repeat procedure(Initial CFRoot Flasher), which you have done at time of pushing CWM by selecting I am rooted already
Now unroot with above said unrooting tool.

i have afew questions about that ,
where and how can i find the specific zimage for my device ? i understood that its in a compressed file extracted with 7-zip , but how can i get that compressed file ?
also , what if i had another type of ROM installed (NON stock) , how can i flash the original stock rom back (since i will not be be rooted, wont be able to restore NAND backups)??!
in HTC devices (i had Desire HD) , reverting to stock rom is simplified by flashing the "RUU" files , which were found in a dedicated thread.
This whole samsung diferences is really confusing me
thanks alot for any help.
cheers.

This is my ass-umption as I am still waiting for other responses as well.
In order to revert to stock you have to download the Initial Flasher.zip from Chainfire.
Then download your Kernel from the first page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784 The zImage is taken from extracting your Kernel, whether it be KK1, KJ4, KKA, etc...
You place that zImage in the files folder and click "already-rooted.bat" *if you are coming from another ROM.*
Once that is done, you run the unrooting tool from Doomlord.

This method may work if you are able to access your device. As in your Android OS is up and running. What about a bootloop on a ROM/Kernel without a custom recovery built in confused. How would you go on from here?
On a part-bricked or bootlooping or otherwise fukkered HTC I would fire up my (bien sure as first thing) flashed ENG HBOOT, put it in FASTBOOT mode and simply a) fastboot boot c:\path\to\file\recovery.img or b) fastboot flash recovery c:\path\to\file\recovery.img and done. No brick from here, bc I a) always can restore a nandroid from here or b) always have a ROM ready on the SD or I could put it there using the mount usb option in the recovery, or heck, even by ADB PUSH. But on a Samsung...

Problem with return

I'm having to return my Galaxy S for a replacement, however before i realised there was a hardware issue, i flashed it.
Since i'm in Australia, on Optus, there isn't a leaked DTJF3 image. So i can't just flash back to the original.
Is there a way using busybox, or an update.zip (I create and sign update.zips, Have done a little) to update the model numbers to at least look like i haven't been messing with it. Best to be safe rather than have them not honor the warranty because of a flashed update.
I ask in here as this is where the people with an intimate knowledge of the underlying code hang out.

Australian Stock Rom (Dump) : ............
PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE NOT A DEVELOPER, PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS FILE.
http://rapidshare.com/files/406741229/dump.tar !!!!
not my work but taken from this forum, so mayb try a search before posting
So I guess the first silly question would be.....
how to separate out the CSC, Phone & PDA tar files from the Dump?
Or is there a way to use Odin to flash the dump.tar?
(just thought I'd ask the question before the OP does )
****************
Ok, so i was just looking at Odin, and there is a place where you can upload the dump.tar file. Is it really that simple - select the dump.tar downloaded from this thread, keep all other PDA/CSC/Modem spots empty, maybe select re-partition then flash??

Hey mate, caught in a similar situation here. The dump is not available now, do you mind uploading to another location? I know many other users waiting for this as well.
All the best with your flashing.
In the end until there is a leaked copy of the rom,we won't be able to flash it.we can customize with update.zip however we can't turn the dump into a rom.
The dump will contain the optus parts of the rom.but not the rom itself. I just figured someone may be able to help me fool the about screen into showing the wrong rom version.
At some point nandroid might get running, then we can do some interesting stuff until then, we just wait.
That's how I understand it

During inspection of your handset, the firmware check is done by the supplied tools to Optus, this will have no effect even if you change the About section on the Android OS, voiding your warranty further. I would rather advise you to wait for a month or so until 2.2 update comes up on Optus, then you can update the firmware via recovery.

the dump has a different format, it doesnt have a radio and csc file ( though you dont need it ) but you still need samsung.pit file i.e the bootloader file .. but be careful while doing that.

What one click are you referring to? If you are talking about odin one click, the only thing you should be using that for is going back to stock before flashing a rom. If a rom is flashable through clockwork than you would just put it on your internal sd card and follow the instructions for flashing through Rom Manager. If it is a rom that is supposed to be flashed with odin you would have to open up the zip file you downloaded and enter the appropriate files into odin.

You need to be more descriptive if you want people to figure out a solution to your specific problem. Your post amounts to "I flashed a rom, I'm having problems, vague reference to rom manager, help guys".
Here's what we need:
1. What version of Android are you trying to flash?
2. What version are you currently running?
3. What modifications have you done?
4. What is the specific error you are getting?
5. What is the EXACT process you are using to try to flash the new rom?
READ READ READ READ READ, THEN READ SOME MORE!
you obviously have not read enough. there are 2 versions of ODIN we use for our phones:
One click ODIN which is simply a prepackaged version of the regular ODIN configured with the appropriate files that ODIN needs to flash our phones with it....they are packaged up by a developer named DesignGears. not every rom is going to have a one click odin....
there is also regular ODIN which requires you to have the appropriate files associated with your rom (kernel, pit file, modem, csc file, and rom), sometimes devs will package as much of that as possible into one or 2 files to flash in ODIN
you need to spend some time learning how to use these or just use the one click and go back to stock, then leave your phone alone. seriously, freaking out on a forum is not the right way to go about getting help for your phone.
calm down and give up the info that modest_mandroid has requested. none of us magically know what the heck you are talking about when you spout out random things like help, i flashed something and now i cant do anything else

[Q] SGS screen error after update to Gingerbread

After flashing gingerbread 2.3.3XWJVH deodexed to my SGS using this guide

You need updated bootloader for Gingerbread firmware.
Intratech is correct, download a gingerbread rom with bootloaders included, flash through odin with repartition and update bootloader both ticked

Can this have to be done via the same method I used before? (ODIN)
Or can it be done as an addition step? I have a sneaking suspicion it's the prior.
Thanks for the quick reply by the way.
EDIT: Answered before I even posted, you guys are so quick you are in the future.
One more thing, could you link me to the files needed to ensure the gingerbread update is pre rooted, as this one was?
Also, I just read that in it's current state my phone can't go into recovery mode, does that mean that if this next update goes wrong, I'm screwed?
No need to repartition, just get rom with bootloader. Same as before with Odin, the firmware will include the bootloader.

Thank you for your help, all sorted now. All I need to find now is a way to root this and install CWM to it.
I know it's rather unrelated and I shall seek out/ make a new threat if I can't get an answer here, but would you recommend the installation of the ported TouchWiz 4 update.zip at the moment?

Go to the dev section and look for the CF-Root thread, it will root and install CWM to your phone. TW4 is a major improvement on TW3 that comes with SGS. I have a SGS II now as well and I love TW4 so if you can install it on your ROM then go for it. Make sure you do a nandroid backup in CWM recovery in case anything gets messed up so you can just restore before installing it though.
Try flashing Cieto's JVHbase Rom from my signature. It's very stable and very fast. Here'sthe link for front facing camera fix. Try his rom. You will be blown away by how good it is. He is very quick to give support as well. The difference with battery life and speed compared to stock JVH from samfirmware.com is huge.

[Q]Should I use CWM or odin to flash 4.0rom like romow?

I know this is a very stupid question but I just want to make sure flashing with CWM is viable.
For the leaked stock ics 4.0 rom I know I should use odin to flash, but how about custom 4.0 rom like Romow? Should I use CWM to flash the zip file?
Thx~

There are no instructions in romow's thread and that's why i am here to ask for any further instructions. I bet flashing a 4.0custom rom is similar to flashing Gingerbread rom. Am i right?
Also, some ppl claimed that I need to first flash the stock leaked 4.0 rom then have my phone rooted with CWM installed and finally flash custom 4.0 rom with CWM. Is that really necessary?

There are better roms now than ROMOW's one i think, try flashing Rocket Rom, or the new AOSP
From the instructions given in [02/24/12][Team Rocket ROM][open beta ICS v4.0.3][v1.5][15Tooglebar] daily ROM now! , it seems I really have to flash the leaked ics rom first before installing the rocketrom 4.0.3 rom, is that true? That means I cannot directly install the ics rocketrom from any gingerbread custom rom?

Yes, I came directly from GB!
If you can load the boot animation that means ur phone is not bricked. You should try to download a stock gingerbread rom from dr ketan's post and flash it by odin pc.

When going back to GB, i kinda 'restart' the whole process by going back to Stock ROM via Odin, and redo the root and CWM.
Else, there are strange quirky issue ex. CWM just hangs while wiping the phone.

Should be this one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997).
Firstly, download one of the roms from [Older ROMs (Directly Rootable)].
Secondly, follow the [Installation Guide For Older ROM ], the one using odin pc.
You may see below another flashing method using mobile odin, but that doesn't suit you since that one requires your phone rooted before and will keep your root after flashing. The one with odin pc will wipe out all your data and apps(of course not your SD card) and also unroot your phone. That means your CWM and root will all be gone and you have to follow another post to root it again(now this one:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)
this one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997)teaches you how to flash a rootable gingerbread rom, but not rooted. This one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)shows you how to root your phone and install CWM. I think these two posts are the best tutorials you are looking for.
I think you should download this >>http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=907734&d=1329574136
This one is better organized.
Thanks mate! Saved it to my desktop...but finally i was able to manage the problem by simply flashing a *fresh* RocketRom again (?!). I thought it would be worth a try...
Anyway: Thank you very much for your support, it´s good to still meet that friendly kind of people with patience here on the board (it´s getting less these days) hope i´ll be able to return the favor in future

As far as I remember I made my very first steps with odin after I reveived my note (root, cwm)...rocket has been flashed by using cwm. But yes, my binary counter increased definitely...
...I do have a USB Jig, but in some was I am kind of afraid of going trough this! To fumble around in pure darkness...hmmm i don´t know
Have you tried it yourself?
Actually I've got a yellow triangle together with increased binary counter as I followed another tutorial guide(I should follow dr ketan's guide before).
I think removing the counter with a jig is way too dangerous for me so I don't want to risk it. Simply remove the counter only when you really need to bring your phone to samsung because maybe you don't even have to claim the warranty at all.

[Q] new note user....a little help...

To anyone that can point me in the right direction....
Just got my note this morning - itching to get it rooted...ive had a fair few phones in the past (just coming from a sensation) which i rooted and reflashed nearly every week. used to have a galaxy tab which i also rooted etc etc so im ok with odin, adb etc etc.....the only problem i have is where to start - theres a million roms to choose from and im not sure where to go
my kernel is 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
baseband is N7000XXLA4
Can anyone point me in the right direction for the tools that i need access to...
thanks to anyone that can help

I can see that mine isnt directly rootable and know that ive got to go to an older rom but which one??
You can have any older ROM, listed here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
select any from directly rootable ROM, I am suggesting this one
N7000XXKL3 ------ 2.3.6 2011 December-------- N7000ODDKL1 --------------------India
as this is non wipe N rootable, you won't lose data.
Alternately, select from 4th line of my signature, which is modified pre rooted ROM
Well, first and foremost thanks for replying so fast! it'd be nice to get this flashed as soon as possible -ive got no data to keep as its new to me so ive got yours downloading now (take about another hour from what i can see) - so, once ive got your rom is it just a case of using oding to upload it (its a while since ive had a tab) so im a bit rusty.....+ i take it the next step is CWM?? is that right??
sorry - all the questions - obviously im downloading your interim rom to get it rooted - whats the best ics rom at the moment....?

yes, just use PC odin to flash ROM, if you have any query, refer to post #2 of thread, i have mention in previous msg.
yeah, next is to get CWM
And, finally you can update to latest ROM by using CWM to keep root intact.

What is "not directly rootable"? You can flash CF/Speedmod/Franco/Abyss kernel over any stock rom to get root. You are anyways asking to downgrade ROM using PC ODIN which is going to increase the counter. Why not flash only one of these kernels using PC ODIN?
From the Moderator,
Please clarify your statement. It is not entirely accurate. The Phone needs to be unlocked 1st before any rooting can occur. Secondly, Not All kernels will provide rooting, UNLESS they are written and configured to do so.
People's knowledge level in XDA are from total noob to expert, so it is highly advisable to provide more succinct complete postings e.g. do A then B then etc. That way, people do not misunderstand your posting.

May i have not uttered more thn three four words, if it was stated by newbie.
When you are 'recognized developer' it puts lot weight on every word you spoke. Hope you can consider to review again your advise.
Can you confirm once again to your statement?
Flash stock ROM using PC odin raise counter?
Flashing CF/Franco/Abyss with PC odin, won't raise counter?
I do believe, your statement is completely wrong. PC odin never raise counter, if you flash STOCK ROM. But any custom Kernel you have described, if flashed with PC Odin will certainly raise counter. Though you are recognized developer, but seems you are new to N7000 develpment.
I havent gone anywhere - still havent got your rooted file - im about 70% of the way there - this has got to be the slowest download ever!!
At last - ive got your rooted file - just extracted it and theres just one file in there - i thought with odin you had individual files....how do i load this one on....

What is "not directly rootable"? You can flash CF/Speedmod/Franco/Abyss kernel over any stock rom to get root. You are anyways asking to downgrade ROM using PC ODIN which is going to increase the counter. Why not flash only one of these kernels using PC ODIN?

You're 100% wrong. PC Odin won't raise the binary counter as long as it's a stock ROM. The OP needs to flash an older stock ROM so he can root and then do whatever he wants to do. The binary counter will get raised if he flashes a custom ROM with PC Odin.

ok - i got there in the end - Firstly i like to thank Dr.Ketan for pointing me in the right direction.....i have a few post-type questions.....
i flashed the rom you suggested (the one that was already rooted) - while it went on ok - while it was in that state i lost the ability to use the keyboard - when i type anything in the key would flash up but the it came up with "null" everytime i hit a key...not too much of a problem as it was only a temporary rom.
Also when i flashed the ics rom you suggested - imilka - it flashed.....then at the boot screen it kept freezing (at the boot animation) - i popped the battery a few times and then it eventually started.....and its been fine since....anyone else ever had that/is that the norm...?
Finally - obviously ive removed the stock rom and im now on ics....is there a way i can download all of the stylus apps and put them back in (one of the reasons i bought a note was to use the stylus - bit gimmicky but it would be nice to mess around with it)
Also - i had to install clockwork mod from the market (i have a paid app version of it) - to actually get into clockwork mod....how to i get to cwm from a cold boot - i read that you had to hold down the vol up and down and hit the power - mine just boots - unless im doing something wrong but, when its fully booted i can go to cwm and restart from there and i can go in.....
Sorry about all the questions but, its a great phone, just want to start messing around with it...new toy!
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
Comfy
Keyboard null issue is common, that usually manage by flashing other rom or with flashing csc, but you have manage it so nothing to discuss.
booting error is routinely termed as bootloop, also common, particularly switching between gb n ics rom. Usually it solved with wipe cache n wipe data.
Sorry abt stylus appl, i have no expirence of ics, as i never installed any custom rom.(n it was not me suggested ics b'coz m noob for custom rom)
Market version of cwm is totally different n won't work on note.
there is custom kernel for note, which having same functiin like cwm.
