My heartfelt Thanks to IlluminatedOne for the links. Its awesome! And its unlocked by default! Too good!
My question is: how do i root my phone now? I had used SuperOneClick to root when i had 2.1 running.

super on.... wait...
read the new user guide in my sig and learn how to search,.

im also having trouble rooting my cappy. just upgraded to 2.3.5 a few months ago and odin just keeps bricking my phone... any suggestions?

open odin and click pda, then locate a rooted/cwm enabled kernel that matches your phone version (kk4 is the most recent). change no other settings, do not include a pit file. make sure your phone is in DL mode and that odin sees it, then press start.
or use the newest super one click and have patience as it takes a few mins for the zerg rush to finish.

oh this is simple. go to development thread and you should find a bunch of choices of Kernels. They mostly have Odin for you to download, then u can use Odin to flash a custom Kernel over your stock one. Then go to recovery and go to the advance options and Root your phone fromt here. All new Kernels are pretty awesome cuz they will root your phone for you and insteall superuser + busybox.

here's the easiest way to root your SGS..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
just make sure you follow the instructions:
You NEED to put your phone on USB Debugging mode
You NEED to install make sure the Android drivers for your phone are installed
Make sure you DO NOT mount your SD card.
If you still can't get something to run, try doing it in recovery mode
The easiest way to root+lagfix (especially if you're newer to this sort of stuff) is to install Voodoo.
It will automatically lag-fix your Galaxy S and then all you do is install "superuser" from the market and you've got root. Nice and simple.

Another option is to go to samfirmware.com and using ODIN instal I9000XWJS5. Full instructions are on site. The advantage of this is you get a good stable ROM, smoothness, fast, better battery life and there is no need for a lagfix - much safer.
Enjoy your SGS.
i downloaded z4root and get a little bit confuse of the temporary and permanent root can anyone explain me whats the difference thanks.

It means that your computer must have the correct drivers for you Galaxy S. You'll be connecting the phone to your computer, the computer needs drivers to recognize the phone.
Just install Samsung Kies, all the needed drivers will be installed as well.

Your best and easiest bet would probably be to install the Spedmod kernel, or a custom Tom. Realty all you have to do is go to the developement section.

Your device must be rooted to do that.
Please.. Don't just try anything without a thorough read. You might end up bricking your device.
First of all, I am not a fan of Lag fixes, some lag fix users had lost their internal memory because of it and if you use it you'll only have 600mb internal memory.
I suggest you to upgrade to a stock Froyo 2.2.1. It is faster than 2.2 and almost on par with LagFixed SGS. I'm currently using Froyo 2.2.1 XXJPY and it is very stable.
Search on the General section on how to upgrade to 2.2.1

Currently all froyo 2.2.1 is only for Europe Galaxy S. I installed mine via Kies Registry Hack. You can also install it using Odin.
I Swyped this on my Galaxy S

I'm sorry but the kies registry hacking is no longer working, Samsung already blocked the kies versions 1.5.3.10103.102 and lower. Here's the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835628
Your only option now is to wait for the official release on your country or Flash 2.2.1 via Odin, remember to backup before doing it coz it'll erase all your data.

Yes you can, mine is also branded and unlocked plus with singtel BLOATWARE. when I upgraded to XXJPY which is an unbranded rom, all of the annoying bloatware is gone.

rooting the captivate

[Q]
ok i tried to root this phone with unrevoked following the captivate settings...no luck.
I am good with flashing with odin, i looked and am going in circles with this lol, is there a rooted stock or rooted gb that i can flash with odin that has no really bad bugs or issues?
thanks in advance
Is your Captivate official 2.2 I897uckb1 ?? If so, I was able to root with success using this...View attachment SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse.zip
It's an older version, but it is the only one that would work for me when I was on the official Froyo 2.2

Updating Captivate

I am currently running Phoenix ROM on my Captivate, its all rooted and unlocked. I received a text from AT&T that the Android 2.2 update is available for the Captivate through Samsung Kies. I want to update to that because my Captivate is really starting to lag and freeze a lot.
Is it safe to just update to 2.2 with Kies? Or are there any additional steps that I should know?
Please help
You can try it from Phoenix, it probably won't work.
To be safe use [STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY to flash stock before trying the update.
Stock isn't any better btw.
Oh and before the flames start, this should be in Q&A.
Kies won't let you update to 2.2 unless you are on a stock system (2.1). You will have to flash back to 2.1 stock, then you can update to 2.2. It's very easy. If Kies gives you "unregistered device" when you try to update, you will have to do some editing to your nv_data.bin file. There are threads here to tell you exactly what to do, or let me know if you need assitance; I have done that several times. Good luck.
Oh, yeah, if you are on GB bootloaders, only flash to stock with Odin3 1 click - DO NOT use the 3 button fix to go back to stock from GB, as that will ensure a bricked phone.

Since you're on a Phoenix ROM, why don't you just flash a 2.2 or even a 2.3 Phoenix ROM. I've tried Mosaic ROM from TeamPhoenix and it was pretty good.
I advice you to flash a custom rom , there is plenty out there .Btw If you go back to stock you will lose root .
Why is this in the DEVELOPERS section? There's a Q&A section that would be a much better place for this.

Hopefully a mod will move it.
Did like the instructions said to do for ODIN 1 click and completely bricked my phone. I tried running it in admin mode and changed the compatibility mode as well but it still didn't flash to stock. It freezes up as soon as I press start.

Put your phone into Download mode then try Odin 1click again. Then you can use AIO Captivate Toolbox to root and ROM your phone to a cool Team Phoenix ROM.

[Q] running 2.1 want gingerbread 2.3.3 for ATT phone

Hi,
I have an AT&T captivate android galaxy S smart phone. I was running 2.2 root. Today I am trying to put gingerbread 2.3.3 on and ran into problems, don't think I have the right files!
I now have 2.1 on the phone.
Model number
I897
Firmware
2.1-update 1
Baseband version
I897UCKF6
Kernel
2.6.29
Build
ECLAIR
build number under phone
10.06
Can you tell me how to get gingerbread 2.3.3 on my phone with instructions?
I do have Odin Oneclick Flasher, and Odin Oneclick Downloader.
The reason I don't use Kies mini and get the AT&T updated gingerbread 2.3.5 is because I did that with my husbands phone (same phone as mine) and we were NOT able to root it. I have read most everything around here and it seems that there are no possibilities to root GB 2.3.5 but I find things that say we can root GB 2.3.3.
Using SuperOneClick didn't work for GB 2.3.5 it was hanging on waiting for device I followed instructions I found on here about that and it didn't work.
Please can you give me a link to a GB 2.3.3 file that I can put into Odin Oneclick?
Thanks
gramme
You didn't read almost everything...rooting 2.3.5 is the same as any gingerbread...
You'll have to use the fugu kernel swap method.
Flash fugu kennel with Odin, that will boot loop.
Use button combos to boot back into download mode and flash a compatible kernel (kk4 most likely) once that's booted you'll be rooted.
Is there a way to update a Samsung captivate to 2.3 without a USB connection because my USB port on my phone doesn't work. Please help me and I charge my phone using a battery charger.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Nope...you need to flash bootloaders which can only be done in download mode, using a usb. sorry.
I think mobiletechvideos.com has replacement Ports

Wow, that sounds great to me except I just did a search of this forum for fugu kernel and only got this post! Is there another forum I should look for that on or do you have a link for me to download that kernel?
Thanks again appreciate your time

[Q] Rooting 2.3.3

Howdy,
I got my phone replaced after an issue with a no service state. The phone i have now is a i9000. Refurbished, running 2.3.3 xxjvk. My question is does anyone have any solid advice as to which cf root package to flash? I found 2.4-3.1 on his page. My last phone started off with xxjvt which was easy to root. Im not sure what the difference between them all is. I need some help as I dont feel like bricking another phone as my last one died after flashing back to GB rom from an ICS rom. Thanks.
Look here for CF Root JVK kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12651359&postcount=6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30067551&postcount=3 , using semaphore will give you CF root plus CWM recovery
Hey
You can Upgrade to 2.3.6 via odin and then root it...heres a guide
Ok. I got 2.3.3 rooted. I have a question about updating my phone tho, KOR is my region code for the phone...Im in Alaska, if 2.3.6 is for KOR I assume that I wont run into any issues? I didn't used to care with my last one, but since it died Im trying to be nicer to this phone as I need it to last more than 6 months.
If theres an update for csc KOR - which my phone is and 2.3.6 includes KOR, why cant I update using kies? I have the firmware pulled already, and want to move to it but was wondering if there was a different way to go about it than odin.

Sure, you can use KIES to upgrade your phone , just connect and try, if failed than you can use ODIN , they are both samsung software, firmware, Odin and KIES downloads can be found on MY Android Collection..link below
I guess Ill just flash it with Odin as Kies says no update available, which is always its response it seems. So thanks.
