I currently have a 3g Rogers Tab GT-P1000R. Currently running Froyo 2.2. I am wanting to update it to 2.3 Gingerbread Rogers rom but am wondering if there are any negatives. In the future I would like to update to some custom roms.
Does updating it lock the bootloader or is it already locked? Any way to easily check?
Thanks.
Check my honeycomb install thread for a APK for the bootloader check and unlock. The rest, well read read read.

No problem going from gingerbread to CM 7.1 beta from the forums here on my Rogers p1000r. If you search you'll find a thread with rooted 2.2 stock firmware for Rogers too.

I am on Rogers using the Team Overcome 4.0 ROM.
It works AWESOME!!!
Stock Roms are useless to me as they are bloated and slow plus your machine is locked down. I prefer the roms that are built on the stock rom platform as the core of the rom is stable and usually all the devices work just fine.

I'm currently considering rooting but before I do so and try out different roms I want to know if there's a rom that is basically the official 2.1 version but with the ability to utilize the apps for OC and WiFi tethering. Important that sense is present and that all included features are fully functional. I want to know about this so that I can have something similar to the official version to start out with.

Hey guys I have searched and searched for a plain vanilla android rom for the captivate an can't find one. Can someone help me out? Thanks

It doesn't exist.
Yet.
Check the Gingerbread thread in the i9000 forum. Once it's up and running fully, then it'll be a hop, skip, and a jump from Captivates. As is it already runs beautifully. They just need to nail down the stability and Camera/Network/GPS.

A few people tried to do a vanilla 2.1 when the cappy was released but it didn't really get far.

The closest you'll get to a stock rom is the gingerbread rom in dev right now
The Gingerbread ROM is from the Nexus S, so it will be as vanilla as it gets.

Samsung has never released Source - so no way to do a Vanilla ROM.
BUT.. like the above posters have said there is the Source for the Nexus S and they are making great headway... it will be the closest we get to a "Vanilla" ROM for our phones.
New to android world and looking for first rom. On stock Froyo 2.2, rooted, clockwork installed. Which rom can be installed without Odin? Do kernels have to be installed separate, if so, is it before or after rom install? Looking for sense-like ui.
Thanks!!

If you want sense go buy a HTC lol. Odin is going to be your bread and butter since its the easiest way to flash to stock and flash kernels. Most roms can be installed without odin though. Go to the dev page and look around at the roms and make your choice. Remember Gingerbread needs new bootloaders (except Cyanogenmod and Miui) and as always read read read.

Forgive me for a stupid question but I'm VERY new to this:
Because Touchwiz is so awful, and the original galaxy tab is being denied ICS by Samsung, I've been thinking about using a custom rom.
There's already a nice looking ICS port coming along.
However, being VERY new to the galaxy tab - I bought this one used, as a pure wifi device, though it HAS a sim slot, I want to know -- how can I restore the original OS if I have problems with a custom firmware?
I noted Kies will refuse to deal with a samsung tablet if it's not an official rom... or am I mistaken?
I'm on a NTT Dococmo SC-01C (original Galaxy Tab) with official 2.3 docomo firmware. this was an upgrade from the preinstalled 2.2
Thank you SO much for help in advance.
You can flash stock firmware using either heimdall or Odin
So yes you can always go back.

Would you recommend the ICS Alpha 3, or is there a better Honeycomb rom? I can't be sure which is which because it seems like every distro has its OWN version number which doesn't match the android release number... sigh
I don't have personal experience with the hc port from but its being released as an release candidate which means that it should work pretty OK but there are probably still quite a few bugs to squash. The ics alpha 3 from is what I've been testing recently. It is NOT feature complete and those features that ARE there are extremely buggy if you are curious to know what isn't working I suggest exploring the ics from dev thread. Most of the working/broken info is in the first post. More detailed info can be found by paging through. Its nowhere near ready for prime time as an every day rom. I'm just testing it because I'm a bleading edge kind of guy and wanted to check out responsiveness and the slick new UI. I will be switching my from back to a gb room sharpish. Please note that i,m not giving the project a bad review, contrarily its showing amazing progress and I'm sure within a few months that there will be a release candidate of either fully working ics aosp or cyanogen mod 9 which is an ics project for the tab that many of the pics aosp project members are contributing to right now.
For a self described noob I would suggest looking for the most stable well tested and fastest rooms you can find. My best recommendations would be overcome kratos (the latest version for the Sgt) or cyanogen mod 7. Both of which are based on gingerbread and both of which have been tested for long periods of time with awesome user feedback and work great without the bloat of all the Samsung apps and such

Thanks so much. I will try it right away. I hope it is compatible with sc-01c.
Hello, I've been having some problems with my galaxy when I update to the official ICS update. I cant lock my screen and my firmware is stuck on the home screen. I've downgraded and re updated using the official update, but I got the same issues as before. So I downgraded again. So now I come to you looking for everyone's opinions on some good ICS roms. Thanks in advance for your help.
This its very subjective and depends on your needs/likes.. Use this weekend and download 3 or 4 roms aosp and touchwiz and try them all to figure out what's best for you... Because what's best for me could be the worst for you

try first custom rom ics based, after you could try some aosp google based.
also you could flash only a custom kernel in a stock ics firmware.

Check out Rocket ROM in the Dev section.
In my opinion the best ICS custom ROM for the Note.
Super stable and super quick.

If you use the S-Pen or the FM-Radio a lot you may want to stick with Touchwiz based ROMs, like:
Kingdroid: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652831
Alliance: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831270
But if you want to have a smooth android experience without any Samsung addition I would say go for Cyanogenmod:
CM9 Nightlies / Stable: http://get.cm/?device=n7000
There is no stock radio or notes app in these, you'll have to download third party solutions.
