About to pull the trigger on a nexus s, convice me otherwise. - Off-topic

I am about to buy a used nexus s (going to sell my sensation after I get it). I hate sense and I really want some of that ics action (I know kmobs is working on it, but the nexus will have support from google + a TON of great devs, not just the 3 working on the sensation cm team).
The reason why I'm posting this is to give you guys a chance to convince me to stay with my sensation. The nexus s seems like the better phone to me, but if one of you guys can convince me otherwise, please do.
P.S. Not trying to hate on the devs over here, it just seems like all of them are so focused on sense, very few aosp roms.

Hello, gonintendo. Can you please provide 5 reasons of why we should convince you to stay. Thank you.

I had the nexus one and nexus s. I took development for granted. Now I'm selling my sensation and waiting for my galaxy nexus to arrive. Not liking what Verizon is doing to the galaxy nexus.

Because you (I assume) love your sensation and the community built around it here on xda? I have convinced myself that I want a nexus s, which doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best phone for me, confirmation bias is a *****. Perhaps there is something huge that I am overlooking that would make it worth my while to stick with my sensation.

Had it before this phone. Main reason I never picked it up again is the screen. Its terrible.
Kinda wish I'd kept it for development though. O well

Assuming you know the specs, but anyways...
Dual core
8mp camera with 1080p
larger screen with higher resolution
Option to run sense or not
ICS will come, and with that many more AOSP type ROMs

Plus tbh... I think this phone will run much better once it has ics support... It doesn't yet and the nexus s is smooth... But if you want simile specs minus quite as much dev support just get a vibrant probably for half price of the nexus...

Nexus s is a great phone. Awesome audio chip, camera rocks despite lower pixels. I loved it. I bought tgis phone for the bigger screen.

I had a Nexus S for a week, talk about a **** build, I hated it, plastic kills me. I couldn't use it. Too vanilla for my taste and THAT plastic.

Just get the nexus. You'll probably be happier.

If this phone isn't doing it for you, you should sell it and get what will satisfy your needs. Don't concern yourself with what others think.

I'm never happy with any phone, I have ocd lol. Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'm going to go for it.

Screw the Sensation, it has so many buggs it makes me sick. I regret buying it

What is this, a forum filled with angsty teenagers, threatening to switch their phones? Nobody cares if you switch, go ahead and do it if you're not happy with it! This isn't a religious group, it's a dev forum.
Seems like the new HTC models have pissed off people who simply must have the latest technology....

I think that pretty much sums up your justification, provided that the cost to change phones is a non-issue.

one thing I see is "I hate sense". I say sell it why own an htc device knowing your getting sense..

I had never used sense prior to buying the sensation. I had played with sense 2.x on a buddy's thunderbolt and I actually liked it quite a bit. I don't know what they were thinking when they put 3.0 together. Everything about it is slower, uglier and less usable than the previous version imo.

Seems like a massive downgrade to me. Maybe I am wrong... but... I doubt it

Thoughts on the T-Mobile G2X as compared to the Nexus

I currently own a Nexus S and love it. I just wanted to get your opinions on The G2X and how it may compare to the NS. Aside from lacking gingerbread, what other potential downsides am i looking at? What are the upsides? I'm just looking for constructive feedback. No Flame throwing

The Nexus S beats it in every department except video recording, so its up to you what you deem important
Nexus S is fast, amazing screen and housing which make the phone when off look like a black slab of coal, also when the phone is on the blacks stay that colour, so you dont know where the screen starts and finishes...
The Nexus S is the real deal mate, i cant see anything living up to its quality, except for maybe the SGSII
JD
Im having the same problem. But im also wondering between my Nexus s, the new T-Mobile G2X and upcoming HTC Pyramid.
My opinion.
Nexus s - Love this phone, have nothing bad to say, never had all the issues everyone was having (rebooting).
T-Mobile G2X - Reviews say the phone is sluggish for a phone with dual core, but it might be due to the custom UI. The G2X comes with stock gingerbread which is a plus but how how easy will this be to developers to root and install custom rom. Have never had a LG phone and dont know how the quality is.
HTC Pyramid - Still needs to be released but the spec looks amazing and I love HTC quality (nexus one). Recently HTC had not been too nice to devs. with G2 and Thunderbolt.
Wait til all the phone get released and then see what happens, see what fits for me.
nexus s is the real deal....unless yours is with tmobile....then in 2 years...its useless (unless you enjoy using a smartphone for 2g)
thats just a techinicality, most of us will move on by then, but the gx2 needs some more time before we can dive into it. but its dual core and 4g, cant really hate on that. ofcourse battery life can be a good fight (im on 22hrs and 30minutes on my nexus s right now and its still at 15%)
amoled screen is another thing...the fact that it doesnt have gingerbread is not abig deal at all, from what i read this is reaallly stock android with the exception of some apps, not skins or UI

Yeah i hope we are able to see some hands-on vids today. I agree that only time will tell if its a winner or not. Those specs do make it seem like a beast of a phone though, and stock android has a significant place in my heart.

I definitely would not buy anything less that a screen with AMOLED. I was a HTC fanatic, i owned the HTC Desire, Nexus One, Desire Z (G2) and the HD. But once you convert to Samsung you never look back, i could never have a SLCD screen again(greyish blacks yuk)...
But i do miss Sense sometimes, and i know that's a contentious issue in this forum as there are so many Sense haters here, but i like having the choice to mix up my ROM's by having stock for a few months then Sense for a few months.. With the Nexus S your pretty much restricted to stock or MIUI, But thank god for the MIUI release, its invigorated the dev forum. Lots of kernels and same-ish ROM's, thank god we have something new to play with

I used to feel the same way when I had my Epic 4G. I thought I could put up with anything for a SAMOLED but then I started playing with an Evo. Sure, the screen as quite as brilliant but a great screen does not a device make. I've made my opinion on Sense clear but I won't dis on someone else's enjoyment of it (doesn't mean I don't get tired of seeing new threads pop up asking for it). The only thing that would really make me not want to get a Pyramid is if the bootloader is as locked down as the Thunderbolt but something tells me that was something Verizon wanted but that is a personal hunch supported by absolutely no evidence so don't quote me on it. I could easily give up the SAMOLED, hell it makes me feel more comfortable running bright themes and I think it helps devs want to make them.

i dont find it ugly at all.. just the bottom of the phone is a little bit exaggerated and could of added more screen size rather than having blank spots; probably something internal of the phone hardware that prevented that or they didnt want to overextend the screen size

Well... it looks snappy, but it's quite obvious the video is sped up. I know for a fact people's fingers don't move like that, all jittery lol. And if it's really using stock android, that stock launcher should animate just like our stock launcher, and it's way too fast in the video (opening the app drawer etc).

Want to change my phone - need opinions

Hi
I know this is not P500-related but I really need some opinions as I am really confused.
I want to change my phone in october (waiting for my contract to expire so I can change it) and I want to change my phone also. So, these are the phones I'm considering (prices for the contract I will most likely get, but probably I will get a bigger one so the phones will be a bit cheaper)
- Sensation - 289eur; really like this phone, I love the way it feels in my hand, nice build quality, nice design, nice resolution (but not very bright). Cons: not as fast as a dual-core should be, risk of having the famous display bug (50-50 odds as I read)
- SGS2 - 379eur; fastest there is, gorgeous colors on the display, 21mbps hsdpa. Cons: doesn't feel nice in my hand, crappy plastic case (when you buy a premium phone you expect great quality).
- Xperia Arc - 239eur; gorgeous phone, I simply love the way it looks, great display and good build quality. Cons: 320mb internal mem, 1ghz single core (not a big con, the way this phone looks simply makes for it)
- Incredible S - 249eur; not sure if it's worth over the Xperia S but I'm considering it anyway
What I want from a phone: first of all I want it to be a good phone, so I don't want crappy in-call quality and signal issues. Second, I want it to look and feel good, after all I'm spending money on an object so I want it to be well-made.
I don't want to mod it, the only reason I'm modding my O1 is because it's too slow with stock rom. I want a phone that doesn't need modding.
I can only buy phones from Vodafone RO, so I'm pretty limited in options. I would love a Sensation XE or Arc S but I don't know when or if vdf will sell them.
I put SGS2 on the list but I don't know if it's worth the 90eur difference, especially because I need to change the tires and the brakes on my car so I have other pretty important things to do with extra money.
So I'm waiting for your advices or other suggestions (for other vdf phones: https://www.vodafone.ro/personal/internet-oriunde/internet-pe-mobil/smartphones/index.htm - these are some of the phones in the vdf deals, other phones are too pricy with a contract)
too much to read for me^^

if you like quality things, i suggest going for the htc sensation.
not to mention that the sensation's forum on xda is quite impressive (im talking mostly about the developmental section)
EDIT: just read that you dont plan on modding your phone. but regarding the sensation xe:

If I were you, from those alternatives I'd go with the Sensation or Xperia Arc, and then mod it to solve the speed or memory size issue. My brother has a SGS II and I must say I don't really like it, as you say the plastic body doesn't feel nice to hold. Looks wise Arc is the most beautiful.
And I don't know if it's just my brother's settings but the SGSII UI doesn't feel so smooth either, compared to my O1 with CM7.

That's really interesting; even though I said I don't want to mod my phone anymore, that sounds like something worth done.
I just read on gsmarena that HTC wants to make the following changes for Sensation 4G: overclock to 1.5ghz, change the battery. So if HTC will upgrade the non-4G models also I will get a Sensation without second thoughts.
Another plus for the Sensation: Sense UI; way better and more smartphone-like than Samsung's childish iphone-like touch-wiz. But in performance terms Samsung is simply better. I gotta decide if the performance plus matters that much to me...
Thanks for your opinions
By the way - I forgot one important thing: the phone must be updatable to ICS; SE confirmed that the Arc will receive ICE, Samsung didn't say anything but for sure they will update their flagship. HTC also didn't say anything but will there be a reason for Sensation not to receive ICS?
SGS2 is for the moment out of the question. As I said, I have other plans with my money and I don't think that a phone is worth it.
So, I want to make a decision: Arc or Sensation? Is the not-so-fast Sensation worth over the excellent-looking Arc? Price difference: 50eur, so not a big difference. The Arc has an excellent camera, excellent display, gorgeous design and great build quality. The Sensation has the dual-core advantage but it's actually not so fast in real life; sometimes it behaves like a bad 1ghz single core. And there's a thing that bothers me: I closed all the running apps and the remaining RAM was still 150mb (tried on 3 different devices and also saw it in a review).
The only thing keeping me from buying dirrectly the Arc is the 320mb internal memory.

No device is perfect!

Ok, so how come everytime we get a new device we complain about everything. Screen, battery, gps, and everything else! It's getting old. No device is going to be perfect! Come on we have a kick ass device! The Galaxy S2 is awesome. Tired of all the bashing and complaining going on in the forums. can't we just enjoy our awesome device and the awesome Roms and support the devs give us? Nope because we are spoiled!

I love this phone. Its the best I have ever had and I have had a g1, sgs4g, g2, g2x, sensation, amaze, and a couple sprint androids. The roms a very good and the devs are as well. There does seem to be a lot of childish bickering here that needs to stop, but I think the phone is an ass kicking device.

Only if you're lucky enough to have non-problem screen then the rest is perfect.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
True but the screen problem is unforgivable. If I can get it fixed then I can overlook all the other problems this phone has.
if the iphone 4s had a bigger screen lets say 4" atleast, it would be the perfect device lol
if the galaxy s 2 had a better screen with no lines or blobs and we got updates fast, like lets say ICS!! it would be the perfect device..
if googled made it a requirement to update your device to the new OS, things would be soo different..
if it only it was like the iphone lol
After all the bugs and issues on my G2x, the SII is a pleasure to own.
People are always going to complain. The best thing we can do is not respond to their threads/posts.
I never had an issue with my g2x i was lucky and the blobs on here arent that noticable to me so all in all im a happy camper

+1 dude I love this device the screen problem is no biggie I don't Read in the dark with the lowest setting possible and even still dont realky see it. But like op said every device isnt perfect and i had just about every device. This gs2 is by far the sweetest phone i owned to date i still think my next device will prolly be a nexus device or the s3 if its sick enough. But yea man i love my phone its super fast and reliable. It was also the first device where i thought the stock rom was half decent. I am definitely enjoying this device and will for a good while with or without ics. Even tho that would be a sweet addition to our roms

With out a doubt the Samsung Galaxy S II is the #1 phone in the world for 2011-current. Some other phones have other features or other small features that make them better in some aspects, such as the Galaxy Nexus screen. Other wise the SGSII is uncontested in every aspect and in sales.
CONS: Now, not by choice I own the T-Mobile SGSII which is another story all together. Yes, T-Mobile and Samsung changed a few features on this device to make it unique to T-Mobile. Whether good or bad it is very clear that the SGSII for TMO has a decrease in screen resolution, CPU and GPU Graphics performance. Other people have complained about lines and blobs on there screen, which I am fortunately enough not to experience on my device. But the worse part of the TMO version is the design......because Apple had to be a B*%^& and sue Samsung over this device we lost the three main button/keys from the original UK version. I like real buttons and would have loved to have a real home button and a back and menu button, ps who actually uses the search button?...worthless! The only other thing I would change would have been to have waited for the white one to come out before buying.
PROS: Personally I don't see much of a decrease in the screen resolution at all, I LOVE IT, and love the size to! The speed of the phone when at its best is amazing (have yet to root my phone and over clock it so I expect to to be even better soon when I do). Until we get ICS I am very content with the Go Launcher ICS theme which is easy to customize.
Over all even with my small simple complaints this is by far the best phone I have even own and still think no other phone on the market competes.

if the iphone 4s had a bigger screen lets say 4" atleast, it would be the perfect device lol
if the galaxy s 2 had a better screen with no lines or blobs and we got updates fast, like lets say ICS!! it would be the perfect device..
if googled made it a requirement to update your device to the new OS, things would be soo different..
if it only it was like the iphone lol

I totally disagree..
The iphone would still have a horribly bland and boring os and would still have a horrid build quality (shattering from a 1 foot drop)

Yes, I first noticed it on an HD video I was watching and I thought it was something wrong with the video itself. In fact, I would not even know about xda if it weren't for the screen issue (so it's the other way around).

Lol.
I still haven't seen the difference myself, better yet I would rather not see it because I would just be upset about it, right? But its not something that makes me happy when I hear that Samsung and TMO made it slower and less screen quality.

Skyrocket has the same issue as well
I thought that the skyrocket and our phone were the exact same device. Wasn't it just discovered that ours supports LTE as well? Whats the differences?
The difference is the processor (Qualcomm vs. Exynos), and the screen itself (4.5" vs. 4.3"). Sadly, our 4.5" screen is the one with the blobs/lines.
This really isn't the carrier's fault, but if they are refusing you a refund/exchange then it is.
huh, so are the blobs/lines caused by something or over time? Or do some devices just have them?

Some devices just have them. Others have speculated that all have them to an extent but some are better than others.

[Q] Opinions on Upgrading

Im going to be upgrading shortly, and NO Im not giving up my Hero. Ive noticed alot of us are going to the Evo3D, I was concidering doing the same or possibly the Evo 4g supersonic. What are your opinions and why ??? Just out of curiousity. Thanks in advance
Got my wife a 3vo for Xmas...the 3d feature is kind of gimmicky IMO.

Have you seen the epic 4g touch? I was dead set on getting another HTC untill i saw it in person. I made the sales rep take back the evo 3d he had just brought out for me. Stalk the forums to the phones your considering, sometimes the community is enought to turn you away.

The specs on the 3D are amazing. I do not regret it at all

I've been patiently waiting the arrival of the Galaxy Nexus... but my patience is wearing thin. My Hero is on its last leg, and quite frankly it is just too slow for my liking anymore. So Im really debating on whether to hold out for the GN or just getting the Epic 4g touch.

I'm in the same boat. Almost 3 years with my hero and I do love it, but I'm due for an upgrade and I'm not sure I can wait for the GN or GSIII. I might have to take the plunge soon. Epic 4g touch or Evo3D....something, but until then I'm flashing roms like there's no tomorrow

Thanks to all for the insigjts, Daatin, have you expierienced any programing gliches (ranbom reboots, freezes ) as ive rread in some of the Sprint reviews. Anb in response to the epic 4g, yes it is a pretty badass device man. Definately on the list of upgrade cantidates. Is rooting the epic fairly basic, just wondering. Lol suppose i could use the search window, :-b One other thing i was curious about, I read the specs on the 3d and the supersonic and other than price didnt really see a difference, is there really a difference ???

thanks laie for your response, gave up all my thank you's today so i needed to write it out lol. anyhow in your opinion does that actually mean its a beter device or one of those "more bells and whistles more problems" devices. and yes sir your opinion does matter. Thanks man
Dive bombing in for a MUMP!! although this thread didn't need it
I have an upgrade available the 31st and I was hoping the galaxy nexus would be out by then but possibly not.. my sister got the Nexus S and the only problem I've seen with it is after a year or so of having it the battery life has probably cut in half if not more. My mom got the epic 4g touch and I didn't really like it. But no problems really that ive noticed. But I never got to mess around with rooting it/the programming side of it. I'm honestly thinking of going to iPhone because its not as fragmented as android. With android there's so many different phones, OS's, roms, etc. Then again that's what I love about it.. gaaaah the choices!! Either way good luck with whatever you choose

I feel your guys' pain about the lack of options for HTC phones on Sprint. I ended up getting a HTC Amaze which is what the next EVO phone should have been but it never made it to Sprint. I was not impressed by gimmicky EVO 3D. The HTC Rezound is similar to the Amaze but again it's on Verizon.
Still kicking around the idea....I do like the 3vo, but the 3D is just too gimmicky for me...I think the Photon is out even though motorola is always a solid phone.
I would go for the Evo Design, but the processor lacks a dual core .....I really think I am leaning towards the SGSII...despite what people say about the plasticy feel, it is slim, it is light, the screen is huge and colorful--(and the blacks are black, not washed out), and from what I have seen for comparisons even though it has the "same" speed processor as the 3vo, it is just a touch faster. The price is just double what the others are....GRRR.
Now I have to pound it into my wifes head, because I think shes gonna get me a phone for my Bday....
I can overclock mine at 1.5ghz and it's just as fast if not faster than stock SGS2... just my 2 cents.

And we genuinely appreciate your pennies.
BUT, if the SGS2 is OC'd and it is faster to begin with, imagine what it can do at 1.5ghz... I think the only thing I am not really diggin about the SGS2 is resolution..even though it is crisp and clear, the icons are bigger...
Who knows we will see what happens hell they might be sold out when it is time...I heard they are doing phones for new lines for a penny right now....makes me wanna walk away from them just to come back and get a discount....lol
That's when the shooter has another plus. It's resolution is higher which is why the icons are smaller but it also means better picture quality obviously with any higher resolution. I watch Top Gear on the netflix app and its perfect. Any game I've played works perfect and looks great due to the resolution.
On the processing front, honestly there's no need to even OC unless you want to just show off. but none of us end users need that much power to run what apps we like. Id be more inclined to want a higher processor if you could build from source on it. But most of us want better battery life. Which in turn you have to sacrifice some performance.
I love the SGS2. However they I believe still nerd to use odin to flash stuff. Odins been known to brick quite a few devices if not done properly. This weighed in my decision also along with I'm familiar with HTC. From a developing standpoint I was drawn because I know it already.
The 3D may be gimmicky... But it sure is fun Im excited to take more pictures now because of it. I can't wait for summer and snap shots of parades and ball games etc... Sure the SGS2 has an 8mp compared to the shooters 2 - 5mp which our Heros have a 5mp camera, but because of the resolution they turn out great. Won't be able to take advantage of that 8mp camera unless you remove the pictures and view them properly on a computer...
Now with all that being said I still want to buy an SGS2 outright because I just do. I mean its a great phone. But all that I mentioned pushed me towards the shooter for an everyday developing phone which is what the Hero was for me.
That's my .25 cents this time
I hope this helped boggle your mind a little more. Not saying you have to lean towards anything. It's your choice and all the phones out there are great. It's a matter of preference. Just stay away from the I-crap. I give Apple one little credit for implementing Unix in a way to a phone platform. But that's all ill give them.

Will never buy an apple-- just picked up a new SGS2 for $0.01 on Amazon though....

Go with what your budget can handle. Now that there is a possible fix for the 1. 5 hboot for the 3D, I'm encouraging my family to move towards it. Plus that phone has massive potential.

And on the seventh day God created HTC Sense...

And just how happy were the Samsung people? Click here...
I can get the devs "sense" of achievement but the hundreds of followers comments of yipeeeeeee, and awesome... etc etc etc ... Why not just buy an HTC?
I am near the end of my 3 month trial of a Nexus S and it has lasted pricisely 2 weeks, its up for sale. I just do not like it. Its featureless and slow. My Desire HD -using rcmix runny- is so much smoother and quicker to the touch I just don't get how they done so well. On Saturdy, else before, I will pickup my Evo 3d dual core and go again -after 4 years- with htc. At $330 (£229 in Asda UK), I just can't say no.
I know there are lots of fans out there for Samsung, but what do you like about it?
Me on Nexus S. Buttons, wkd for reboots to recovery when had to rip battery out. Nice and easy. Like the longer thinner screen too. And Amoled is very good. That is it.
I think you're confusing 'Samsung' with Vanilla Android. What you experienced with the Nexus S isn't your normal Samsung experience. The Nexus phones are pure, unadulterated Android. They may seem plain to some but they're designed to be. They are developers phones. They're easy to mod, to theme and easy to use.
If i bought a Nexus S i would have MIUI on it in a heartbeat personally, but that's the whole point of what we do here. Buy a phone you like and have it your way. Vanilla, Sense, MIUI, iphone themed... whatever. I can understand wanting a Nexus S and putting Sense on it, if you're a fan of both!
Some people buy HTC but get rid of Sense as quickly as humanly possible. Different strokes for different folks.

Another example of Samsung letting someone else do all the work. MIUI -for me- is boring, too much concentration on being an iphone rather than itself. I used to use first MIUI roms when it took weeks to get a translation out of Shen. It might be time to try it again.
I am one of the ones that strips Sense immediately. The point was that my HD runs faster and smoother with sense that the NS runs without it at all. I tried many roms and the lag is terrible, as was the stock rom. Now performance with the Oxygen or absolution roms... That is special. I just think the build quality is better. I guess I am disappointed with no singing OR dancing.
Orb3000, if you are around please explain what it is about HTC that we love so much.

lolwut?! I don't think you understood, They're phones 'promoted' by google, with clean android, it's how they're meant to be, in no way is that Samsung letting someone else do all the work?! What's all the work?! All UI's from manafacture's are for android, which is what the Nexus S has, just not skined, the Nexus One, that didn't have any custom UI, does that mean HTC is letting someone else do all the work. And finally, by another.. What else have they done?

Dude, I used to love Sense. I owned an HTC Desire, and even Sense 2.1 lagged on it.
Then, I realized, Sense sucks. It's heavy, really bloated and makes Android look like sh!t! Yes, even on Gingerbread. It's really bad. I agree, it does have some cool features, like the People app on Sense is unmatched, but, still, I prefer stock Android waaaaaay better.
Now, I have a Nexus S. And I absolutely love it. Why aren't you using ICS? It's much faster than Gingerbread. And much much better. I love my Nexus S and will never change it with an HTC.
And the reason that people buy Samsung, is that it has better hardware than HTC. Just look at SGS II or SG Note. They eat Sensation and Rezound for breakfast.

Not sure dude. I think that Samsung were cute using the Tegra 2 for those models and you will see a big swing this year when htc have the t3 inside. In bothe phone and tablet. The actual feel of an htc in your hand is much better i reckon. The nexus s and sg2 seem plasticy.
I have the cm9 kali ics on now.It is the only one of all the ICS's I can install and not spend 1hr putting things right on. its ok, but nothing like as quick as my DHD with sense on and loaded with apps, but that's on GB.
Ah well. I'm not sure what I expected from it really. The fact that i do mess with my own roms and knew what I would makes me the stupid one. If ur happy ur happy. I just wanted something different.
and the lord saw that it was a bloated resource hogging abomination and cast it into the lake of fire...

Im one of those people that stripped sense out as much as possible. Last years HTC phones were a disappointmet, I can't stand those 16:9 dimensions. Hopefully this year they make a decent phone with a 4:5 and 4.5" screen. Until then it'll be Samsungs.

I have to totally disagree with you there old bean
Sense is lovely, it's so smooth and logical. I find it usable where as I find plain android horrible so would never have a nexus.
As for hardware, yes the SGS II screen is nice, but the phone feels really cheap and brittle to me, I'd be worried about sitting down and snapping it. I don't have such issues with the sensation and prefer the higher resolution screen.
It's one of the huge advantages Android has over other phone OSs, there's so much variety and customisation available pretty much everyone's desires can be met.
