I have had my XL for a few weeks, kept mostly in the pocket. Today I have noticed a nasty hairline scratch on the display. It was left on the counter face down a few times but so were my considerably older Sensation and EVO 3D and not a mark on them. Looks like HTC ran out of Gorillas for the XL...
Anyway I would suggest to proceed with caution and use a screen protector at least.
Input from other XL owners re display glass durability would be appreciated.
Yeah I had the same problem, I wear a earring and after answering a call I noticed a small scratch on the glass as well, I've used a lot of phones and this has never happened to me before, not happy about it, guess its my fault I should have put a protector on before this happened oh well

I left my sensation xl face down on my work desk in order to find what I could only describe as random scratches on this devices screen. I'm tending not too be too bothered about this phone now as I really preferred my GS2. This doesn't seem as good as the hype shop owners built up for it and I can't wait until some immense phones are released next year

Yup my phone was dropped on a rubber carpet from 0,5 m height and then on the floor and sadly the glass got broken even though the frame didnt get any scratches what so ever. I thought Sensation XL had Gorilla Glass and I found out the hard way that HTC forgot to put it on..?
XL is turning out to be a major disappointment with it's gorilla-less display glass, low resolution and lack of a memory card slot. Other than that it would be a dream phone.

Well to be honest, mine has no prob with the scratches at or, I even tried to add the pressure on the screen with a pocket knife. But thank anyway for the warning, buying a screen protector...
Yeah I too have been a victim of this non-gorilla glass idea they seem to of liked for the Sensation XL? ... even though the screen is one of the biggest on the market, but is left vulnerable with standard glass :\
I dropped mine from around 2feet, it landed face first as it is front heavy and as I picked it up I revealed the small cracks which later have grew into bigger cracks.
Annoying thing is, I have looked everywere too get hold of a new glass and can't seem too find one? Any help would be much appreciated. I would send it too Three (my contract provider), but they said it could cost up too £100 and if I decline the offered repair charge the would charge me a default fee of £20.
Not happy at all.

What? 2 broken glass in a row? Now that's weird...Btw, I searched on eBay and no luck. U have to wait until next year I guess... Cheers and Merry X-Mas
Thanks for replies everyone.
I did decide to leave it until the new year and have recently found one site claiming to offer the Digitzer for this phone, I'm just a little wary of whether the sites trustworthy though.
Here's the link -
parts4repair.com/htc-senstion-xl-touch-screen-with-digitizer/
I also watched a video on how to replace the digitizer on the older Sensation and it didn't look as straight forward as I have done in the past so may find someone to do it for me.

Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
Ive done some googling around, and it appears that breaking glass happens to alot more people. Seems HTC decided to NOT use gorilla glass on this otherwise magnificent phone..
Also i read tons of people get scratches on the screen rather fast, so using of screen protectors is advised.

Nope... HTC Sensation XL's screen is using Gorilla Glass, I can assure you that.
I've been using this device for almost 5-6 months WITHOUT any protectors and not a single scratch was given

scroll down to the part where it says: "what we didnt like"
It says here no gorilla glass, also i have found other topics on XDA saying people had scratches very easily.
Could it be possible some phones dont have gorilla glass then? So far my screen has been fine, and the XDA topic gives mixed responses too.. link

I don't know where you heard that, but i am certain it is not true. Not as a definite guide.
it may be that HTC are in the same situation as with the old Desire. Maybe some of them do, but some don't depending on what supply of gorilla glass is available at the time of manufacture.
I know mine does have a scratch or two, but they are tiny and not even noticable when turned on. so mine definitely doesn't have Gorilla glass in it.
... about the Gorilla Glass on the Sensation XL
If you check the Corning's website (sorry, can't post outside links yet), in the products section, for HTC, you'll see that the Sensation XL is not listed there...
Also, about 2 hours ago, I talked to a guy from HTC support center, and he confirmed that the Sensation XL's screen doesn't use Gorilla Glass.
This is really disappointing, given the fact that it was the most expensive smartphone made by HTC (up until the HTC One series).
Does anyone know, if a third party company might make a digitizer with a higher quality digitizer?

You´re screen without any scratches doesnt mean it has gorilla. I havent used any protectors with my SXL and never had scratches.
From there it is really good. One time my dog pulled the chargers cord and my phone fell from table to floor.
Distance was some half a metre and i have plastic mat on floor. Still downpart of the phones glass shattered and back cover dont
stay in itse place too fit. ****ty build on this model.
Hey everyone, i'm going to post this thread to warn people about the really bad screen quality.
The first problem that occured, was when i put a screen protector on. When i applied the screen protector, and tried to remove the protective film on the screen protector, i accidently took off the screen protector too. Before i went out to get a new one, i noticed a strange smear on the screen. I have no clue what it is, but cleaning the screen with any type of cloth won't work. The part of the smear also feels alot more resistant
I have no clue how this happened. I always take good care of my phone, i never dropped it, never leave it face down on any surface etc. I think that the screen couldnt take the cold of the winter. My nephew also has a scratch like this, only his one is much much worse. It goes through his entire screen, and some pixels dont work anymore.
Maybe someone on this forums knows wtf is up the smear on the screen.
HTC sent my old desire HD back with a smear like that on it. I used some lynx deodorant to get it off. But was very careful when doing so.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio X315e using xda premium
Wait, you used deodorant to get it off? Will any other brand do i.e axe or adidas?
HMMM
With what did you clean the screen, i looks like you clean it with alcohol or acetone, i really don't think the screen protector could do this ,just because the screen protectors don't have any glue on it. I never saw that screen protector would do that
I just used a really soft fiber cloth to clean it. I don't think that it's glue, since when i look at it from the side, it seems as if a protective layer that was on the screen has been eroded

I guess so, as long as its not that dry stuff. Spray it so there is a liquid layer. But do a tiny bit first if you're going to try.

Yeah, you can only really use it to reboot your phone into recovery. That's it. so will have to flash the rom from recovery using cwm.

About the screen smear, cleaning didn't work. Maybe there used to be a protective coating on the screen? Cause the smear is also alot more prone to fingerprints and has more resistance than the area which is still normal

Alright, i think i know what happened: In the process of removing the screen protector, the "oleophobic coating" came off. Anyone got any ideas?

Contact them and order a spray. Then you know what to do
So i got a reply from HTC stating this:
Code:
Dear Marco van Dijk,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Sensation XL.
My name is Paul and I am a Technical Support Agent for the HTC Written Team.
I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with the screen surface.
To resolve this, Marco, I would like to book your phone for a repair, however I must inform you that our phones are tested to meet international and local standards and the screen coating will not corrode through standard wear & tear.
I cannot say for certain however damage like this is generally considered out of warranty as it is due to an external source peeling the coating from the screen.
If you wish to proceed with the repair, then please read the following instructions carefully. By proceeding with the repair you agree to the terms and conditions of the repair service.
During repair, we will install the latest software as part of the diagnosis and testing. All the data from the phone will be lost, except for data stored on the SD card, SIM card, or online services, if applicable. If this is possible please check our online Help pages on how to backup your data.
Do not send the SD Memory Card, SIM Card, Battery, Back covers and other accessory items included or not in the product's box. All we need is the bare device. We can’t be held liable for any of these being sent in as they won’t be returned.
Package the device as you would like to receive it. In a good strong box with plenty of padding. You can use the original box, but it will not be returned to you. This information overrules the one in the repair tick-sheet instructions.
Should our engineers determine that the fault you are experiencing is caused by physical damage, wear and tear or illegal software, it will not be covered by warranty. Conditions of warranty also include warranty length terms from date of purchase. The repair will be chargeable and we will send you a quote. Should you not wish to pay that quote, there will be an approximate £25 diagnosis, shipping and handling fee to have the device returned to you and not repaired.
Liquid-damaged devices are returned immediately, unrepaired and without charge as they are beyond economic repair.
Your repair will take approximately 7 working days from when it arrives at the HTC Repair Centre and it's subject to parts availability.
UPS can collect your device from any address in the EU at the following times, except public holidays.
Monday-Friday: 09:00 - 13:00h / 13:00 – 17:00h / 17:00 – 21:00h
Saturday: 09:00 – 13:00h / 13:00 - 17:00h
Do you think they will screw me, and let me pay for the damage? (Since there's also a scratch on the screen and face it, what's the chance that a screen protector will remove the coating)
And if so, anyone has an idea of what the costs might be?
There is always a chance to get you pay for everything. I think in worst scenario they tell you they changed the digitizer. And as i recall the cheap one in ebay was 50-60 euro. So you can only guess what they can charge you if they say it's your fault.....
so do they fix this problem for free with warranty?
Today, My HTC, was in water for about 3-5mins.
I was walking home, I opened my bag and some one splashed water on me and my phone was in there, the bag is water proof so the water stayed in there and I didn't really care until I realized that my phone was in there.
So, I took out the battery and dried it out for an hour, test boot it and it shows the HTC boot. Screen still have some water on in it, I can see.
Now, I'm wondering if my phone will be spoiled or something. Can I do anything about it?
Leave it off for as long as possible mate, some people say about putting your phone into a freezer bag full of rice for a few days will do the trick

Hello fellow xda-users,
since i´m coming from a Sensation i didnt have the "luck" (or maybe not?) to get my hands on Gorilla Glas 2.
I saw multiple threads about GG2 on the HOX and the SGS3 claiming it scratched during normal daily usage.
My Sensation (GG1) still doesnt have a single scratch after 2 years without a screen protector.
Will we have the same problems on the ONE as on the HOX?
regards

True, maybe someone with a GG2 Device (you?) could comment on the overall scratch resistance on other devices since some people seem to think that the scratches aren´t really on the screen but on a coating that comes from the device manufacturer.
Thanks
I have GG2 on my Lg Optimus G. I work in manufacturing and I keep my phone in my pocket with out a screen protector and old a TPU case on it. I have no scratches on my glass even when it goes in the same pocket as my keys
My One S has gg2. It's been almost 8 months since i bought the phone, and i haven't put a screen protector since day 1. Still no scratch, not even a tiny bit..

I've also had no problems with my HOX that has GG2. Never had a screen protector for this phone. We will have to wait and see how it will be on the One.
Thanks guys, i´ll still wait for the first scratch tests but you eased my mind allready. :good:
I've had the EVO lte since launch with no screen protector. I've on a couple of occasions, dropped it. Once I was getting out of my lifted jeep and it fell out onto my driveway and slid face down for a few feet. And another time on my concrete patio landing on the top corner and bounced a few times. To my surprise, both times the screen suffered not a blemish. I purchased a new housing because of the paint damage and all was easily as new. So I wouldn't be too worried about gorilla glass.

had the desire, desire hd, evo 3d not a scratch or blemish on any of there screen. working construction head to toe in sh1t all day.
one x with in 2 weeks had a circular pattern of scratches and a 5mm score.
this was at home in my pocket .with no contents that i am aware of.
i prey that the One is not as soft as hox.
It literally appeared today. At first I thought it was a dead pixel but it's not completely black it's gray and also I looked at it with a magnifier and it's not square it's like a blob.
Is there any way to get it out or something without taking the phone apart? Since it got there randomly today and wasn't there out-of-box.

Dust shouldnt get under the screen so bring it back.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
It's miniscule and they will probably think I'm crazy what if they don't give me a new one, no solutions?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
They way the screen is manufactured should prevent any dust form ever getting inside the screen. There is a special "goo" that is filled in between the gap of the lcd and digitizer. Any dust in the screen was left there in the manufacturing process. I had the same issue, I just went to the place I bought the phone and exchanged it. Now I am happy.
I actually have a speck under my screen too. I've only had my One a little over a week and I noticed it a few days ago when I decided to check for dead pixels since a few people have had them. Thought it was at first, like you did, but I see it with my screen off. I'm on AT&T so are they known to try to brush off a little spot like that? I know they really shouldn't be able to professionally but I just don't want anybody to try to give me any lip for complaining.
If there is a potential opening for dust I sure as hell don't want any more and muddy up a beautiful device. Sounds like I should exchange mine too, huh?
I really hope this isn't going to be a problem, the sensation was plagued by this issue, but it had no where near the level of build quality of the One. I sent my sensation back to htc and they replaced the screen. If it gets worse then send it back.
I havent tried bringing my phone back yet for the dust but this is the second One I've had because the first kept shutting off by itself so if anything you could fib and say it keeps restarting itself randomly on you cause then they'd had to excange it HAHAHA I have AT&T too and they can be **** heads when you try to get replacements
Good luck!
