Hi everybody. My first post . Ive been reading lots of threads for a couple of weeks. I decided to make an account to get some help with topics and also help others out where I can .
Im looking to buy myself a Google Nexus One. However theres a few things which im not sure on about the screen.
1. How badly do fingerprints show up? Is it really noticeable? I currently have an iphone 3gs which shows finger prints, but its not that bad and cant see them when the phone is on.
2. How "Good/Bad" is the Nexus One screen? By this I mean from videos I have watched on youtube the nexus one screen always looks darker and other screens look so much brighter and just more inviting. How noticeable is it?
Thanks for all the help. If my questions have been answered before (recently) please post the link of that thread
1. fingerprints showup given the screen doesn't have a oleophobic coating unlike the 3gs.
2. screens nice with great color contrast BUT you can't see it in the sunlight. light literally reflects off the screen.

It's not treated with an hydrophobic treatment, so not as good as iphone but I use a screen protector and I do not care about prints.

huh? It's an OLED screen! it's gorgeous but need to be full power outside to be visible

Newer Nexus one will have SLCD, I have no idea how they compare...
Welcome to XDA! I find the N1 screen as good as or better than most others with the same size.
I have a iPhone 3G and fingerprints and brightness have always seemed the same with it and the N1. The 3GS has a coating to help with smears so it might beat the N1, but a screen protector could easily fix that.
Below is the real difference. That's the iPhone 3G on the left, which has the same display as the 3GS, and the Nexus One on the right. Photo was taken with both on 100% brightness on both, which is why the sky looks washed out.
The nexus screen is just fantastic in my opinion, the amoled colors just pop out more than any other screen I've seen. It's just beautiful
Screen looks fantastic, but the multitouch is messed up.

I got something here.
Compare the screen to an LCD TV.
The screen on the N1 is fantastic.

it can only track 2 fingers, not 3 or more. and there is an axis crossing problem which does not effect anything unless you are a hardcore gamer where the inputs would cross axis. most games dont have input axis in the same plain anyway, so not too big an issue.
the actual display panel is great.. i prefer the color saturation and dark black over the high pixel density of the iphone4 LCD...
what sucks is the touchscreen hardware... i dont care too much about the lack of true multitouch but it is really "off" sometimes.. i get way more typos on the keyboard than when i had my iphone 1G and randomly the touch registers about a half inch off from where i touch
I see. Well maybe it was just me eyes then because you guys have all given it positive reviews pretty much. thanks for that
I've had my Nexus 4 a week now, I'm really enjoying it coming from a Desire HD, a very smooth experience. Although people keep saying the display is one of the best seen in a phone and I'm honestly not that blown away by it. I'm using Fauxclock to edit the display settings, I forgot what user-made settings I'm using.
Before the settings change I wasn't that impressed, afterwards I barely saw a difference, In-fact if I wasn't testing side by side I doubt I would be able to tell the difference.
I'm not saying it's a poor display, the only thing I compare it to is my own IPS monitor and my old Desire HD, it may be because I'm already conditioned to an IPS display in terms of colour and whatnot, that I'm not seeing this wow factor.
This is using auto-brightness and after having a look, I'm using sebacestmoi's settings. (248.240.240 23.22.22 7.7.7)
going from super crapoled on the G Nexus is an amazing screen upgrade imo ESPECIALLY outdoors
After it's calibrated it looks nice. I had a mytouch which had the same screen as the desire(i think) and I very much prefer this screen. The top screens are: HOX, SIII, Note II, and iPhone 5.
What is the best way to calibrate the nexus 4 screen?

It has the best LCD blacks on the market and features in-cell touch, so things on the screen look like they're floating. You can also do a better job of calibrating it. If you spend some time doing it, it's up there with the iPhone 5. That makes sense, since it's the same tech, but Apple does an extraordinary job of calibrating their displays.
I have a Desire HD too and it doesn't even compare. Blacks on the DHD are horrible and the colors are all dull. Stock Nexus 4 colors aren't any better, but if you mess with them they can be quite vibrant.
Sunlight performance is pretty ****ty on both displays.

It´s funny, two years ago everyone was talking about how great Super AMOLED was. The Nexus S has two versions, one with Super AMOLED, the other with Super Clear LCD. Everyone thought S-AMOLED was way better. In my opinion, LCD has always been better, at least in terms of colors. Certainly back then, when AMOLED still had PenTile.
I can imagine that it´s hard to switch from an AMOLED screen to a LCD screen though, even if it´s IPS.

I prefer amoled to be honest. I have no problem in the sun viewing my galaxy nexus and the contrast is amazing as are the view angles. Theres also a lot more calibration potential in custom roms as your not just dealing with a backlight. I still like a good lcd panel though. I just don't understand why the nexus 4 and nexus 10 (especially) have such poor calibrations out of the factory. I don't care if the colors are accurate but the nexus 10 could barely even display the color purple at all when I had it. Theres no reason it shouldn't have been able to. Out of the factory both of these devices have shipped with terrible gamma curves and poor saturation. The fact they aren't calibrated them individually isn't the problem. They are calibrated wrongly.

The fact that it doesn´t use backlight is good. I think that´s the future. I would love to see some hybrid technology with ''normal'' colors.

I read quite a bit about that in cell touch thing, I don't see anything floating myself buy it sounds fancy anyway. The colours do look accurate but not super vibrant as some say. It is calibrated.
I really love the display of the N4 after "calibratiing" it with the faux app. It looks simply stunning, sharp, great colors, awesome black levels and this floating effect (the screen looks like it is painted on the glass).
There are only 2 things which are not perfect (for me atleast), I always have the display on auto-brightness and on the lowest setting (when in dark enviroments) the colors don't look right (hard to explain) but as soon as you increase the brightness a tiny bit it really starts to come to life...
Second thing is this weird effect that it changes the color slightly from yellow/blue depending on the viewing angle, it is not bad it is just a little thing which stops it from being the best. I couldn't compare it side by side to a HOX yet (but I played around with it for a while) but the only difference I see from my N4 and HOX is this weird yellow/blue polarization effect. So I'd say the HOX is still the best display I've seen but the N4 is a really close second. My previous phone the DHD is no comparison aswell as the GNex or Galaxy Note...
But the stock settings on the N4 are horrible when I first saw it I was like "apart from the resolution I rather use my DHD...", everything was yellow/green just horrible...

I simply tried a couple from the list, like the most different settings to see what direction I had to take for my display... And then when I found a good one, I tried to improve it with minor adjustments...

Yes, quite terrible. Maybe Apple has a patent on properly calibrated displays! lol
Google has done incredibly bad in calibrating their own devices (starting from Galaxy Nexus -> Nexus 7 -> Nexus 4 and 10).
If you look at a gray scale gradient, instead of seeing: black -> dark gray -> light gray -> white, you see: black -> dark magenta -> green -> yellow. WTF???
What the heck did Google smoke???

It just has to be widely adapted. People said LCD had weird colors compared to CRT too. And now it is repeating hear with people used to seeing LCD all of their lives saying AMOLED looks weird. But in reality, AMOLED has a pretty wide palette and when viewing certain palettes get magnified when viewed next to a pool of dark black rather than a dark grey. Same thing applies to a really bright white, colors look more washed out than they really are when viewed next to a bright white. that is just the way the cells in our eyes work.
The LG Optimus G currently has my favorite mobile phone display though. For some reason it looks a lot better than the Nexus 4 display even though the screen is exactly the same. Might be software but it might be the wallpapers. Go check out an Optimus G with the wallpaper of the rocks or the colorful feathers, amazing.
The Nexus 10 display is also just wow too. It is gorgeous and probably the best mobile display ever. A 10 inch 300 ppi screen is as good as it sounds.
It does have a nice display if nothing is wrong with it. The quality is very happy inconsistent

This is really a disruptive device if you combine the price tag, hardware power and build quality as well as pure Android at its best. Very impressive demonstration of what Google is capable of, together with a partner like LG. And finally no Pentile Garbage screen!
Its the best Nexus Device ever. Never would have thought to say this about an LG Device.
Nicely written.
I find it interesting that cite these design factors as two of your main highlights on why the Nexus 4 is so special:
"It doesn’t have a curved display this time, but instead an interesting touch where the left and right display edges are wrapped around the corners. This makes touch gestures like scrolling horizontally feel much more natural, when you start at the edges."
and
"I really appreciate the multi color notification light which is positioned beneath the screen. There is an app called color flow which allows you to specify notification colors for each app seperately, this is a great feature to let you know what the context of the notification you just received is without even turning the screen on."
Good to know Samsung's Galaxy S3 design bodes well with LG and Nexus users..
Also funny that you deleted my comment on your blog and I had to post it here.

The S3 has rounded glass on the face? I think the large bezel(on the S3) ruins what the N4 has going for it.
The front camera is 1.3MP not 3.2MP as stated in the review.
Though the review was good, you may want to go back and check for I's that aren't capitalized and so forth. For me at least, it makes the review lose a small amount of credibility. Otherwise, I enjoyed it greatly.

Sorry, maybe I should have said "Samsung's" design, not the S3 then. Because they made the Galaxy Nexus
And the S3 has curved glass on the edges, giving the exact experience when gesturing from the side that he mentioned in the review. Not having it wrap around the entire side was smart IMO as it only makes the phone more fragile.
Point is, two main "wow" factors are actually Samsung designs that have been.. shall we say, "expanded" upon? (to be nice..)
But I don't dislike the Nexus, or his review, I just found it funny that those two points were written as if to insinuate that it was "new" design tech that improved the user experience over existing devices. Whereas I would have said something like, "similar to some of the key design features of the Galaxy line" to give credit where credit is due. I mean he even references the position of the power button which, again.. Samsung..
AW: My Nexus 4 Review after some Weeks of usage
Totally agree with the power button issue. But the multi color notification was already present on the Nexus One. And I don't know if probably some Windows Mobile Device from ages ago had this. So I'm always very careful when claiming that somebody did invent something.
I mentioned the two issues (display and notification light) not because I think its extremely innovative, but because the features are there and it makes sense to mention them.

If anyone wants to claim the idea of the multicolor LED, look toward RIM. The original Blackberry Perl had a multicolor LED behind the trackball. Samsung was still making toy phones back then.
OK I am not saying that Samsung "invented" these things lol
Just that they already have them present in a flagship Android phone that is still on the market right now, and is the most popular Android phone ever, that's all I am saying..
But yes, perhaps RIM had something original and cool back in the day.. they are fighting for their life right now though

Didn't know that. Now let's see how good BB10 is. I have a playbook and I'm waiting for the update...
Just informing everyone that bestbuy is now having the note 4 on display. We just started the preview today.

Went to best buy today during lunch. They had 3 of them on display. Looks great, solid build, and the screen seems sharper and clearer than my note 3. On "basic mode" the color rendering is spot on. I'm digging the Note 4.
nice! i just went to play with them....damn i can't wait! all they had was white, and for once, I don't want a white phone. i wanna see the black.
but yeah that screen is amazing and bright. so crisp. and honestly the phone seems really snappy! didn't notice any lag. camera seemed cool but i can't really test it there. i'm excited!
funny thing too..there were like 4 of the BB samsung reps just standing around, and not ONE came up to me to ask if i had any questions or try to sell me something. i guess they don't work on commission huh?

Yeah I asked the rep if other stores in the area had black Note 4's but he said Samsung only sent out the white ones. Kinda bummed since I'm still not sure which color I want.

was excited to get to play with one at my best buy as I wasn't expecting it to have it since it's pretty small. to be honest it didn't do much for me. i realized I don't gaf about the metal trim. the white back still has that crappy plastic feeling (I love the rubbery feel of my black note 3. why are they different Samsung?!) it didn't feel much snappier or anything and the screen while noticeably brighter didn't seem all that much sharper than my note 3. one are which there was a big difference was in the rear camera. the note 4 took a picture of the best buy store with great contrast and popping colors (her mode on) while My note 3's pic was dim. I was pretty excited about the note 4 but now I'm not so sure I need to upgrade right away at launch.

So is the trade in a flat $200 gift card for ANY working smartphone ?
I stopped by my local best buy last night and got to play around with them. Had a sales rep come by and he was flipping through the screens and doing demos with the videos and stylus etc... Really a great sales pitch. He didn't have to sell me though as I already pre-ordered but I told him that early on and we still went through it both happily impressed. I think he sold himself on it from his S5! The screen is very impressive. I cannot believe how great the big demo videos look on that screen. I'm even more excited now to get it and put this iphone 5 on ebay.
I played with the frost white model at my local Best Buy, yesterday. They had three working models. Very beautiful phone. The little metal trim really adds a lot to the niceness of the phone. I was most impressed with the crispness of the screen, how extremely loud the speaker was — despite the rear placement, and how beautiful 4K photos and videos looked on the device. You can definitely see the screen quality difference between the Note 3 & 4, when watching the 4K demo videos on the Note 4. Just completely breathtaking!! I was sick of seeing nothing but the same, boring, stock blue static wallpaper found in every single review, so I changed it to the vibrant wallpaper in the photo I included, and I also changed it to one of the blue phase beam live wallpapers on the phone. Gorgeous!
Also, the faux leather backing on the Note 4 feels more like the black faux leather backing of the Note 3... not that extra firm hard plastic feel, found on the current white Note 3. The camera was nice, and I love the out-of-focus shot abilities, where you can enhance a portion of a photo, and blur out other portions. The wide-angle selfie mode was very nice, as well. The UI improvements are very nice, and more modern looking than what's found on the Note 3's 4.4.3 UI.
Overall, I was ready to upgrade, but I'm going to hold off due to a serious concern someone posted on here, about how 1080p movies would actually look on the Note 4. There seems to be some controversy as to whether or not the qHD screen would actually render 1080p movies better or worse than the Note 3. Taking that out of the equation, it would be worth the Next 12 upgrade for me.
Played with the Note 4 today at Best Buy as well. Streamed a 1080p movie to it, quality seemed fine. The speaker is louder then the Note 3. Couldn't test the camera to much the anti theft cord was to short.
Any one else notice the left capacitive button isn't a menu button anymore. Instead it's a recent app button. It confused me for a bit in the beginning.

Yes, the menu button's icon was changed to reflect that it is now a recent app button. It's been shown in many of the online videos. Not really sure why the change, or if the button can be reassigned without root. At any rate, the new recent apps menu looks worlds better than the one found on the Note 3.

Yes, the menu button's icon was changed to reflect that it is now a recent app button. It's been shown in many of the online videos. Not really sure why the change, or if the button can be reassigned without root. At any rate, the new recent apps menu looks worlds better than the one found on the Note 3.

So there's no menu button? Going back to the three dot soft key?

No menu button, same as the Galaxy S5. But like someone said, long press the recent app button and it functions as the menu button.
Hi,
I'm looking for a new device, as my Note 1 looks like it's about to join the big charger in the sky.
I know the basics - large screen, good battery & processor, meh resolution etc. Judging form the specs and reviews I've read, it looks like a good fit for me.
What I'd like to know is if you'd recommend buying it for long term use (I'm not one to change phones every year), and if there are issues with the phone you think I should know about.
It's a great phablet. Fast, comfortable and bug free. Battery seems to last forerver. Feels solid yet slippery in the hand, and close to impossible to use one handed. You won't feel the difference made by the 720p resolution after a few hours. Color reproduction is great and the screen is sharp and bright.
Coming from the note 2, i see only 3 downsides In the flex.
1. The camera. Real slow to focus indoors, produces lots of noise in dark areas... Sometimes i cant determine where the focus point is. Perfect daylight and closeups though.
2. Lack of development. This phone is locked down tight, so if you love to flash like me, it's a disappointment.
3. No cases, no glass screen protectors. Almost. You can still find them around ebay and amazon, but not as much stuff a samsung would have.
On the bottom line this is a great mid-high range phone, and for the right price, and the right mind it will do.

Thanks!
I don't really care about the camera. The lack of development is a bummer. Might have been a deal breaker for me if it wasn't for Xposed.
Oh, one more thing - some users had an issue with ghosting or after images on the screen. Anyone had this problem? How widespread is it?

It really is a matter of luck... Some of the phones were bad from factory.. You have something like that, you'll get it replaced with your warrenty.
If you want to keep it long term and lack of updates (and also latest apps) will bug you then I suggest Nexus 6 over it. My dad has this phone and I have the nexus, dont get me wrong g flex is a nice phone but starting to fall back in technology and will likely not get updates for 2+ years
