Unbrick service out there??? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have rooted multiple G1s. I think this is my fifth or sixth one and I managed to brick it. The 2708 radio kit I installed via recovery failed and , not paying attention I ran the Hardspl. Boom brick! Stuck on G1 screen.
I was wondering if anyone is still using JTag out there that can unbrick it for me for a price? Its an almost mint G1, hate to give up on it. I also have a spare G1 motherboard, screen, shell, keyboard, and more. myabe we can work something out?

Have you checked in your local area for phone repair shops? It's rare, but sometimes some of them do offer JTag services. I bricked mine as well a couple months ago..looked everywhere and finally found 1 place that offered JTag..I didn't de-brick it because of the cost. Ended up buying the MyTouch 4G.. lol point is..look around, I'm sure there's at least 1 place that might offer what you're looking for.
IF not, you mentioned you have a spare motherboard?? Just swap it out with the one in your phone right now. It'll be..almost..back to where you want it to be..good to go

This Guy Claims he could Fix a radio bricked G1

Hey I was just looking on eBay and found this.

He says he can fix radio bricked G1's
I don't believe it but who knows
THIS IS A REPAIR SERVICE FOR ALL HTC G1 PHONES. IF YOUR PHONE IS BRICKED OR THE SCREEN GOES TO G1 LOGO AND FREEZES. ALSO IF THE PHONE POWERS ON AND IT GOES INTO THE BOOT MENU THEN A TRIANGLE WITH EXCLAMTION POINT THEN IT CAN BE FIXED. I BRICKED MY PHONE AFTER I INSTALLED THE RADIO TWICE AND I WAS WITH OUT A PHONE FOR 2 DAYS. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH AND READING ALOT OF FORUMS. I FOUND A WAY TO UNBRICK MY PHONE.

EDIT: What mode does the G1 go into when you press the scroll ball in and power. I did it just now and a blue LED popped up, could this be a way to unbrick? I'm sure someone else found that out though.

he offers no proof, no explanation, and he's just annoying by typing with all caps. even if he did have a way to unbrick a bricked g1, i wouldn't let him near mine because i'd be afraid his poor internet etiquette would attach itself to my phone and infect me.
My thoughts exactly, I wonder how the people in HTC flashes the boards. I was looking up and found out about jtag a long time ago but thats probably it. I'm no pro though lol.
There is still something inside saying "what if..." haha. Well I'm glad my G1 isn't bricked *knocks on wood*
Ebay is a place where a bunch of low life people go in hopes they can rip off people who dont know any better.
Unfortunatly it just shows us that a lot of humans are scum.
No need to post this here, if it happens you will probably hear about it here first.
yeah ebay can get pretty sketchy. and besides, for 75 dollars? he's probably just gonna buy another g1 and replace the motherboard which can easily be done for under 50.

Htc biggest ripoff ever !!

Good day,
This is just a warning to all Touch pro 2 owners. I bought my unit August last year. Shipped it back to HTC because the touch screen had stopped responding. The phone booted up fine but you couldnt use the touch screen.
Im from the Caribbean so I had to pay for the shipping back to the states.
This is the email I got for HTC :
Dear Valued Customer,
This is documentation to provide suggested action repairs and quotation for
each service rendered.
Diagnosis:
System hanging, device has been hacked.
Suggested Repair:
Replace Main Board
Total Repair Price:
With shipping $359.64
---------------------------------------------
I paid $700 bucks for the phone off amazon.
I installed the bootloader and an Original windows mobile European Rom 6.5 months ago.
Here are my questions :
If the motherboard is bad or "hacked" why did the system work perfectly for 6 months.
Obviously HTC thinks I am an *** to shell out $360. Im going to tell them go to hell. This WAS my first ever HTC phone. I had respect for the company. But not the way they treat their customers. Im just going to tell them keep the phone because I dont want a paperwieght. This is alot of BS. Its obviously a hardware problem and they are trying to blame it on me.
So Im out $700 and no phone. ---- HTC they have lost a customer for life.
Im sure someone here will have a problem with their phone. But just be warned. HTC thinks we are all chumps. Im going to get a droid or something when I save up enough money.
I hope no one has to live through this nightmare like I had.
Thanks for nothing HTC. ---
* EDITED FOR LANGUAGE (NRGZ28) *
ok first of all, dont curse, its just gonna make you look childish,
where im at HTC doesnt really have bad customer service, you just gotta make sure you talked to the right guy from HTC, but since your touch screen doesnt work, its just an LCD problem something to do with the digitizer, not soo sure, but did you even try a hard reset or flashed a different ROM?
and what you installed a bootloader
you didnt jtag it have you?
but im sure u mean to say HardSPL, but was it the original HardSPL? that couldve triggered them to say its been hacked if it wasnt the stock SPL
I bet for that price you could pay someone to do the work locally.
Well you really can't blame HTC for your mistake..The mistake of not restoring for factory ROM and SPL prior to sending it back. There are instructions for doing that just for this situation when you need to make a warranty exchange..Flashing a custom SPL & ROM will void any warranty on the phone..If its only the touch screen that is bad you can pick one up off ebay and do the repairs yourself...google and you will find detailed instructions...
Sounds like you need a new digitizer........Ebay has them for around $30 (U.S.)
Purchase a small Torx driver set, and replace it......
I meant to say Hard SPL
Yup I meant to say Hard SPL.
This is just wrong the way they say it was the mainboard. Im sure it has something to do with the touch screen.
It is sad they had to resort to this. I mean I dont think Im THAT stupid. Hard Spl or not I think they should just fix it. Its not software related. The phone works perfectly. Just no touch input.
With that kind of money I could get another TP 2 off ebay. So its just wrong. Its a sham to get people to shell out 360 bucks for nothing.
This has thought me a very important lesson. Dont let these companies push you around.
try to attempt at asking it back without the repairs? i havent seen no one do it before, but its worth a try, im pretty sure they'll give it back cuz they "claim" you cant fix it and will be stuck with it, but in reality u have digitizers sitting around ebay
worth a shot mate
but then yet again, how much is shipping? :x
Clearly stated in the Hard-SPL thread:
OliNex said:
Hard-SPL Release Time!!!!
NOTE 2: this is unsigned Hard-SPL. no limitations on flashing ROMs (except of course some Radio roms). also, this has overwrite protection against HTC RUU's overwriting HSPL with a stock one, so if someone needs to revert to stock SPL for warranty reasons, a stock SPL downgrade package is posted here below. use this relocker *only* if you need to return the phone for warranty, and only use it as last step - after reflashing stock OS and radio. see steps at the end of this post about how to reflash stock SPL.

Simply downgrading to the stock SPL could have avoided this.
Yes downgrading could have avoided this but they lied !!
What bothers me the most is that they lied about the diagnostic. Its just very misleading and to me its extortion. How could the mainboard be bad? Or is it they simply think that people with smartphones dont know how they work. I will update you on the situation as time progresses. One thing I know is im not paying that "fee" for having it repaired. Shipping might cost me $70. So im already out alot.
sounds like a digitizer as already mentioned. very cheap.
i bought my phone off ebay. and seller said it was RAN OVER lol. still works great despite the scratches, chips,e tc and battery looks like it went to hell and back.. cells almost exposed in some areas
They probably have a policy where if the phone has been hardSPL'd (hacked) they simply replace the mobo. I can understand they wouldnt wont to train their staffs in every known hack etc they would want the phones to be in original condition.
Just tell them to post it back (you will have to pay the postage) then either set it back to standard and then try to get it fixed again or best option as others have said, buy a digitizer off eGay and fix it yourself or get a local boffin to fix it for you.
You need to accept the fact that if you hack your phone you will not be treated as a 'normal' customer. You get a lot of benefits from hard SPL but 'factory' HTC service wont be one of them.
First off, you are truly stupid for even paying $700 for a cell phone off amazon. That is outrageous and you know it. Besides, most carriers sell these for $150 - $200 with a new 2 year contract. Second, I agree with the others. If you would have called and had them warranty exchange it, you wouldn't be in this situation. hTC is a great phone manufacturer and their phones are top quality (price reflects). You have had one issue with the company because of something you did and/or failed to do with ONE of their phones. Don't go blaming them for your mistakes. Sorry if anyone is upset at this, i just can't tolerate someone coming on here and bashing the manufacturer that makes our phones
I can only foresee this thread degenerating more than it already has so I just closed it. ROM development is the wrong forum to post this anyway. As to the original OP... it comes down to the fact that you didn't put the stock SPL back on before you sent it to them. It seems logical they would use that as an excuse to get out of repairing your device for free. HTC or not, they exist to make money.

Kaiser can't find sim card

Hello guys, I've got quite weird problem. Today morning, I tried to run android on my Tilt, but when I've done flashing, my phone couldn't find sim card (which was in it). I thought it was maybe ROM problem, so I've changed it to another and it was the same. Phone couldn't find sim card which was in it. Okey, I tried to change sim to one from another operator and was still the same... At last, I reflashed my kaiser to Win Mobile 6.5 (shifu 4.3 ROM, best for me) and it's all the same! It didn't crash or something like it, so I think it must be software problem.
What do you think guys, why it can't find sim?
Actually, I've got shifu 4.3 ROM, Radio 1.70.19.09 and HardSPL 3.29.
What shall I do to get it back to work?
Waiting for your advice.
//Edit: found a solution to this, searching the forum. I´ll try it and then say if it works.
ive got the same issue, let me now what u did to fix if u get it working
I tried to put a tape on my sim card to get it better connecting to the port, but it isn't still working... I read all topics about not working sim, but I haven't found real working answer. Can someone say what exactly should I do to make it working (without getting it to service)?
why without getting it to service?
some things are just hardware failures and no software can fix them. i have personally had this problem. read the FIRST page of the kaiser general forum and you will see at least 2-3 such threads. this is a common issue because of the moving parts in the kaiser. if the do-it-yourself tricks aren't working, then it is very very likely a fault in the main flex cable as detailed in the threads i am mentioning.
Yeah, I've seen that and it's really getting me down...
Why not? Just because I had a issue with not contacting usb port, I got my kaiser to service (not original, just something like "buy-sell phones service) and it costed me about 120zł (it's 30 euro, on that current). It wasn't done good. If I had a required stuff to solder it, I'd done that by myself. Next, my kaiser falled off my knee, when I was playing my guitar and writing an sms (I mean, I had guitar on my chest and I was writing sms in the same time) and slider works only in one place (not two - right and left, just only right). I tried to repair it, but it's just torned plastic and I can't do anything with it.
Now, sim card reader has f*cked up... I don't 've got enought money to pay for all things to do with my Tilt, so I think I'd lie down in my drawer...
Goodbye kaiser, hlip... ;(
Maybe, later, I'd buy G1 .
sorry to hear about the entire story. i used my tytn2 for a full 2 years. i had the main flex cable repaired last month and my repair guy also did a poor job. he put in a tilt's main flex cable, so my sim started working again. BUT! he didn't notice that the tilt does not have a front cam. so now my tytn2's front cam does not work.
i used the repaired tytn2 just fine for the past month. i just got an hd2 yesterday because i couldn't resist!
but it was worth having my kaiser repaired because now i can sell it. if i did not have it repaired, no one would want to buy a phone whose sim card doesn't work!
Yeah, I used my for about 1,5 year, but it's second hand phone - it was used by my friend for about year. How much did you pay for that repair? Just wanna know what prices are for that .
HD2... Man, you've got world's controlling center in your hands!
Congratulations .
I'm thinking of selling my kaiser like "sim not working, just for parts or to repair!", but I'll wait for the price in service.
i'm in a country where i can't use ebay/paypal, otherwise i would have ordered a brand new part for the kaiser. these parts are available as "do-it-yourself" kits for about $35.
where i am, i had to have it replaced by a local service shop. these shops rarely have replacement parts for "exotic" phones like the kaiser. so i had to settle for a cannibalized part from a used tilt for about $45 i still think it was worth it because without repairing it, i could probably sell it for about $50. after repairing it, i can probably sell it for about $150+ in the market here. so i will still make a profit of 150-45=$100+ compared to a profit of $50 without having it repaired.

Bricked G1, a little help needed

So I had my G1 for a day and I decided to root it and put a custom rom in it; I am used to the way you do it on windows mobile so I found this pretty tricky and I did something wrong from a tutorial : I first installed Danger-spl without radio. So I wanted to know if there is anyway to force it to enter recovery mode ( it can't with the key combinations ) or I heard about the ORT and some other tools that could fix it. Could anyone clear things up a bit? Thank you in advance.
Nope, you have the famous Danger SPL brick. The issue is an incompatibility with the radio, recovery and SPL. Basically, it has a recovery boot flag that can't be erased, but the recovery can't boot.
Yep thats the reason they call it danger spl.
i forgot exactly, but i remember reading some where on forums that if you have a second G1 you can revive yours transfering some hardware, so you might get a cheap fix if you buy a g1 with broken screen or something.
In the instructions it says the following;
"DO NOT SKIP THIS NEXT STEP OR YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE
You must have the latest radio "2_22_19_26I" or "2_22_23_02" to flash this SPL if you already have the latest radio you should not have to flash it again but it will not hurt if you do flash it again. When in doubt flash it anyway. "
I found that in the four or five times I have rooted phones I have always had Radio 2.22.12.26I, so I once decieded I didnt need to flash and subsiquently flashed and BRICKED my phone.
Always flash radio before spl regardless of whether you think you have the latest radio or not.
G1 Bricked
Okay so I can't fix it the easy way, before switching parts, what about the ORT?
Never heard of it, only fix I know without replacing parts is JTAG, which involves ~$50 of equipment and soldering to the motherboard.
I also did the exact same brick on first day I got my G1. I know the feeling it's the worst.
I took a month learning about the JTAG method and buying the parts in stages (G1 JTAG adapter shipped from Poland so took a while). Eventually I built it and I was able to successfully unbrick my G1.
It cost ~£135 to buy all the bits but I was determined to do it regardless of the cost.
There are a few on here with G1 JTAG for unbricking so maybe one who is relatively near you can help you out?

No soldering to the motherboard is required when using the G1 JTAG adapter.
Ah, my bad. Did little more than glance at the wiki.
I believe that they have identified the jtag points but as yet I dont think anyone has found a way to do it yet. Search for (de-bricking dreams) on here.
I think if you live in America there is a place you can try, they say there is a 80% chance of debricking, however, to do it yourself you would need the equiptment and that would cost you more than the phone is worth.
You best bet is to buy a donor g1 from ebay and replace the mainboard that cost me about £40 to do.
You could also try sending it back to t-mo and hope they just repair it, thats what happened to me and I ended up with a phone with a crack screen as a spare. Sorry for your loss I was gutted when it happened to me
P.S there is a method of changing the motherboard without soldering tutorial here: http://www.portatronics.com/guide/T-Mobile-Smartphone-Repair-Guide/
JTAG
Okay so what exactly is JTAG and how does it work? any change of finding these tools in a phone service?

It's been done by at least five on here. Check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591048
Update
I gave it to a phone service and the guy said he'll see what he can do and that he hopes it isn't physically damaged. I will tell you what happened and if it is fixed maybe someone can learn from this; As for myself,I learned my lesson xD
Confirmation
Could anyone confirm that if I replace the motherboard with a new one ( http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-Dream-Mothe...d=ViewItem&pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item3caee067e9 ) The phone will work ?

[Q] buying Sgt that is hanging at samsung bootlogo

I saw a SGT that is hanging at the bootlogo on ebay.
it's ending tomorrow, so any answers till then would be appreciated.
I hope I understood it correctly from what the seller wrote.
Is this easy to fix and how?
Im hoping to save some €uros, would it be a good idea if I can get it cheaper?
edit:
one more question. is there a clockworkmod bootable sdcard for the tab or what do I have to do to flash a new rom?
Mate, there are a lot of reasons the tab isn't booting. You may not be able to recover this.
I personally wouldn't buy a tab thats not booting, there could be a hardware problem and then those euros you spent have just been thrown away as you can't return the tab. You were fully aware there was a problem before you bought it....
Good idea is to visit other countries ebay, you may get a tab for cheap though do make sure it is compatible with your networks and the seller is happy to sell overseas...
seller writes it was like that when he got it?
is this possible at all?
or must he have done something to it, like flashing a rom and doing something wrong so that he cant recover it.

Well, if you buy it from him like that you would then be able to claim it was like that when you got it. It could be anything, as stated before, and I wouldn't touch it unless it was super cheap and I could use it for parts. Mine was brand new and after having it for almost a month it had to go in for repair (covered under warranty, but still a pain). Since you will likely not be covered under warranty, I just wouldn't bother.
he is sending the original slip with the device.
someone bought it for 301€, quite a lot.
