[Q]Not able to get computer to recognize me[Debugging] - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've been reading threw the forums on EVERY phone not just the Captivate on how to get my phone recognized on my computer when I'm in debugging mode/download mode nothing works. I haven't even ROOTED my phone which is why I was trying to get my phone to connect in the first place but I can't even get this far. Maybe rooting just wasn't meant for me.
ANY help will be greatly appreciated whether it be links to something you think I may have missed or actual information regarding this issue.
Either way, Thank you in advance, and happy holidays.
Also more info on what I've tried already, Re-installing drivers, restarting, trying different USB ports.
I'm willing to go back threw these steps if they are different from the ones I have tried before, hell I'll be willing to go back and try it again even if I have done it if it seems to have worked for you or someone else.

Did u see this thread ?... Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help

Yes and although that didn't work, I have gotten my phone to connect to my computer... its just not staying connected...

Does it disconnect when the phone screen turns off? Or is it mostly random?

Bad cable maybe?
Are you using the USB port on the motherboard and not an auxiliary port?

Same issue for me as well. I'm using only ports attached to the mobo. I've tried 4 different known good cables and 3 different machines using the connection troubleshooting tips posted and still nothing. My phone will charge and with go into download mode but only with a jig. I have tried on windows 7 32 bit, 64 bit and windows XP. Also tried out osx with heimdall but still no dice.

Time to boot up the Linux machine. Google wubi installer.

tried again today on a fresh ubuntu install and it cannot detect the device. In Windows I always get unkown device error and now in Linux it just plain doesn't see that a device is attached. I know that the majority of the usb pins on the micro connector must be good because my jog successfully gets it into download mode and I can charge it fine and also getting "unknown device" error constantly. I am at my wits end with it. I took it apart to check the condition of the usb connector and there doesn't appear to be any damage or bad solder joints at all. Just bizarre and extremely frustrating!

What?i never did that and Ubuntu sees both my phones, regardless of the firmware on them. I would think, at most, he might need to install libusb-1 (or something like that).
Op, have you tried a new cable?

sudo apt-get install libusb-1.0.0

I will try that as well just so I have using my linux box as an option but I finally did get all of my computers to detect the phone with any of my 4 cables. I got desperate and took apart the phone to see if there were any visible issues with the USB port. It looked as though there was lint or grease between couple of the pins to the board on the USB port so I took a toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol and cleaned it up. I let it dry and reassembled the phone and then much to my delight it was detected! I promptly got it into download mode and flashed back to a rooted stock 2.3.5 with GB bootloader and CWM boog kernel. Phone is so much smoother than it was with 2.1

So I've searched through threads and can't seem to find any solutions. I'm running Axura 2.1CE w/ JK3 kernel. I've used multiple cables, on different computers and none of the computers are able to even detect the device. Any thoughts?

I had this happen to me a couple of times. One time i just needed to restart my phone, and at least once it was a bad flash and I just had to reflash over and master clear. never had it become a permanent problem.

can you not get into download mode using hardware buttons?
The usb cable that came with the phone is not working for you even after installing the proper samsung usb drivers? What windows OS are you trying on?
Make sure it is a data cable and not a charge only cable. Look at the tag that is on the cable and it should tell you what it is.
Like UpNSmoke said.. make sure your using the correct cables.
It is suggested that if your having issues with a computer recognizing your phone to plug the cable in to the USB Port that is on your Motherboard on your Computer.
I would also suggest that if you haven't already - use the drivers that are in Design Gears ODIN 1 Click Back to Stock (links also provided in the sticky here as well). These are the one's I've been using since I've had my phone - and haven't had any issues.
Another thing you can do is - plug in your phone - and then re-install the drivers while the phone is plugged in.
And lastly.. I seem to have better luck with my Windows 7 box then my work's Windows XP machine. Good luck..

The cable I used was the one that came with the phone, what's odd is that I've never had this problem until earlier this week. I've tested it on Win7 x64 and Win7 x86

Tried ODIN 1-click and every machine I've run it on is windows 7.
I haven't had any luck getting a decent connection to my phone yet either. I've tried several different drivers, x86 and x64, different versions of each. Different versions of Kies and Kies Mini. I've tried suggestions from online. Nothing has gotten me anything reliable. I almost forgot, I've tried 2 different phones also. It would be one thing if it just NEVER worked, but for it to work sometimes and other times not, mostly not, is frustrating. I'm afraid to try a new ROM since everything I see about unbricking a Captivate requires a USB connection.
You definitely need to have to have a working USB connection before flashing... and plus you need it to return to stock using ODIN.
Have you tried re-installing the drivers with the phone plugged in and no dice?
I've tried plugged in, not plugged in. USB hub, USB motherboard connection. Just about everything I've seen online I've tried. Some don't work at all and others work briefly but usually within a day refuse to work more than it does work.

[Q] Computer wont recognize phone

Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, changed ports, changing computers, USB debugging. everything, whats wrong?
I had similar problems, and did a system restore on my Windows 7 64 computer. Some updates didn't allow the phone to mount.
I'm not saying this is your case, but it's worth a shot.

A little more info would help. What is your PC specs? There are some known issues on Win7-64.
ya i have Windows 7 64 bit
Its Win7 64 I had similar trouble
first try right click Mini Kies run as Administrator, then plug in phone when Kies says to, Windows will recognize it if it has the usb drivers if not it will look for them and will install, then try again ..good luck
it worked not what. my phone doesnt show to "Mount".

Are you on a custom rom or stock? If custom, which rom?
i am on firefly 2.5
Hmm... Well its not the rom. Firefly 2.5 works fine for that. Any chance you've tried a different usb cable? Didn't see that in the op. Could be a bad pin/wire in the usb cable itself or on the connectors.
Also, no dirt/debris in the usb connection on the phone itself right?
Just to be clear the phone will charge when the usb is connected as well correct?
ya ive tried different cables, computers, roms everything i went into recovery with the usb plugged in and clicked mount usb and it works then but i dont want to do that every time.
still doesn't work after a few days

I had a cable issue when I first got my Captivate, and it was incredibly aggravating diagnosing the problem. The trouble was that with my USB cable the phone would charge just fine, but the computer would not recognize it. I assumed it was the phone or drivers--since the cable seemed good. At that point I didn't realize how precise the voltage has to be and stuff for the computer to recognize the phone. I tried my wife's cable, and everything worked fine, so I brought my cable back and AT&T gave me a new one. Not that this story helps you at all since you already tried a different cable...

ya thats exactly whats happening but i have two different cables and they both dont work
Is it all possible to swap cords with an AT&T store? I'm sure it's unlikely that both cords are fruity...but it'd be worth a try if possible.

[Q] Running out of USB ports to get ODIN working!

Hey guys today my second USB port stopped working for ODIN.
The front two on my PC don't work for it and I got 4 left on the back, is there any way to solve this issue?
uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers then rebooting has always fixed it for me. if that isn't working i've got no clue. sorry i couldn't be more helpful i guess.
Yea I know but same problem.
I'm anxiously saving money for a GS2 and Netbook.

also have the same problem with my old pc, two front usb don't work with odin, but work with anything else.
I've had this same problem, and I haven't been able to fix it. But now I've switched to Ubuntu and Heimdall.
I don't know if this will work for you, but this USBDeview looks like it might do the trick: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
I assume you are using Windows, and if you are, there is one trick that I have used in the past to fix other devices. This *might* work for you. Try removing the non present devices from device manager. In order to do this, you need to Google how to view Nonpresent devices in device manager. This trick will show you every device that has every been plugged into each USB port. You can then go in and remove the drivers that were previously installed for your phone on that port. Whenever you remove the nonpresent device, next time it is plugged in, the computer will think that it has never been plugged into that USB port before.
Hope that helps!
Im serious about the new cable. I had a problem with the default usb cable before until a friend gave me his mt4g usb and never had a problem again. I think its a data miscommunication with the t959 stock usb. I lost any ODIN connection on all ports until I switched. Try it. Youll see.

[Q] Driver Issues? Or maybe cable?

So recently I soft-bricked my phone (phone---!---computer) and it won't go download/recovery. It randomly froze while odin was running. But anyways, I've been trying to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310 to unbrick it but it keeps telling me the drivers are not installed.
I've installed drivers using kies, the one click unbrick, and just from the samsung website and none of them seem to work. When I plug my phone in, it makes the usb plug in noise, then an icon shows up in the bottom right task bar for maybe 1/10th a second and then disappears. I'm running vista x32. Any ideas? Could it be the cable?
Heimdall uses special drivers.
As part of the heimdall one-click operation, it should ask you if you want to install the drivers (zadig.exe, I believe, is the application that does this).
If, for some reason, it doesn't, grab the full Heimdall package (search in the Development section for "Heimdall"), and that will definitely have the drivers.

Yea it told me to install the samsung usb composite driver and I did that. After rebooting my computer, when I plugged in the phone, windows confirmed that I had the driver installed but for some reason when I plug my phone into the usb it only recognizes the phone for a split second.
Edit: Actually the instructions tell me to put my phone into download mode in order for the driver to be installed successfully. Since my phone is bricked, I can't do that but it let me install the driver anyway. So I guess that's why it tells me drivers are not properly instaled.
That does sound like either a flaky cable or a USB port that's not behaving. If you have multiple USB ports, try plugging the phone into different ones. If you're on a desktop, the ones in the back are usually better. You may need to reboot the computer between tries.
If all that fails, see if you can get your hands on a different cable, or even a different computer.

usb connection problem

hey guys i have a usb connection problem with my galaxy note.. whenever i connect my phone to my pc the usb connection icon doesnt appear neither any message shows up on the pc, the only thing it does is charge the phone , i even used differnt usb , tried reflashing the rom , thoough im using a custom rom , but no success, but there is one thing when i phone is connected to the pc and during that interval i restart the phone a message appears on the pc at the boot screen ...unrecocnized device connected, as soon as phone proceeds it too disappears.....if you guys know anything about this kindly help me out.....i have to pull my sd card every time i need to put something in my phone
It's possibly due to condensation on micro USB port of your mobile. Try cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and keeping your phone under the sun or in dehumidifier.

Just clean it as is. You might be able to see the problem, but you will need a good magnifying glass or loop to see it.
I took some photos I found on the web of a dirty port and colored in the contamination I found on mine.

I have the exact same problem. My device doesn't get recognised by windows 7. It doesn't ask me if I want to use the phone as a pendrive. When plugged in, it only charges the phone. Sometimes the phone does not even realise that it has been plugged in at all. I dont think that its a problem with the pins because I have tried using an OTG and been able to connect to an external hard drive and copy files. Also I have been able to use PC Odin and flash a stock rom using a usb cable. This makes me think that all the pins are fine, and that its a software problem. Something has got glitched and not getting un-glitched lol!

one thing you can try.. is to completely uninstall KIES off and remove all samsung usb drivers off your computer. When I say completely uninstall Kies, I mean totally removing it, from your system registry files and including Samsung folders that you can find in Program files or in program files x86..
After that, restart your computer and reinstall Kies and/or all samsung adb /usb drivers again.
Don't forget as well to plug your usb cable at the back of your PC since mostly USB ports coming from the back of it has strong usb signals than the ones at the front.
Hope this helps.
Don't forget to hit me up a 'Thank' if I've helped you some way or the other.
Cheers!

isolate the issue first...get another usb cable, and if you have another computer (aside from the one your normally using at), try to plug your phone on that computer and see if that pc will detect your phone.
If not still, then that's the time you can already consider that your phone might be the one having the issue.

Well I guess, that would prove the point that it could be your phone that might be having the issue bud. After all, you tried different options already but still came up with the same issue.
I'd suggest you may need to take your phone to SSC and have them check it.
