What is 'merge with Google' in contacts for? It didn't do anything upon clicking. I was assuming my social network contacts will get uploaded to google but nothing happened. I don't have any contact on phone and SIM if that is what it is supposed to upload.

iirc, it should merge all your contacts into your google account, so if you ever swap phones, you can just sync the contacts to the new phone instead of backing them up to a microSD and reimporting.
I guess with this button you upload your phone's contacts to your google-account.
btw. Does anybody know how to upload your facebook-contacts to google?
When i decide to merge a fb-contact with a googlecontact it will be merged on my phone only, but not on google. When I flash a new rom I need to merge all contacts manually again. this is so sad. solution? =)
Thanks in advance!

No way to do that at the moment. There are a couple of options to ease the trouble though.
1. Rename your google contacts to be the same as your facebook contact and upon adding facebook account sync, it will attempt to "auto" match contacts based on names. (Not applicable to everyone as sometimes they will use some names for their facebook profiles like "Playboy Randy", etc....)
2. Input your facebook friend's email into your google contact account and upon merging , it should come up right on top of the list of suggestions.
3. Not so recommended way is to use a backup software and backup all your contacts to it. Upon restoring it on phone, you retained all your google and facebook contacts merged but you cannot use google sync anymore as it will create duplicates on your phone. :-(
Further, what is this for?
Dun trust this button. It varies from ROM to ROM. Basically, in the perfect scenerio google will backup all your market links and wifi password, bookmarks, etc into the google server and upon installing a new ROM and after signing in to google, it will attempt to redownload all the applications from the Market and restore the wifi password, etc.
I had this checked all the time but after flashing about 100 Roms, it works 2 or 3 times the most

Yup, i updated firmware but nothing was restored. Sometimes Google fails to deliver at all.
At least we can backup all apps with titanium backup...

After clicking it, I am seeing duplicate contacts. All Google contacts are duplicated. Don't use this stupid button guys!
its true its an evil button/command and a very big mistake to click it but in case there are others out there who just like me clicked this command... here is what i did to restore my contacts as to the previous status
1. use your computer to access your gmail account (the one you merged the contacts with)
2. click the red gmail button somewhere at the upper part of the page (its hard to miss coz its red)
3. the drop down menu will be revealed and choose contacts
4. the merged contacts will usually be placed under the "My Contacts" group
5. select all of the contacts (all contacts should have their check-box checked, right beside them)
6. you should see the button "More" at the center of the page, click that
7. click export to google CSV type (first bullet, and make sure to export all contacts, the outlook CSV format will export it to excel type format which will mess up your phone numbers if you have saved the numbers using the +(country code) format; the plus will be removed in excel and even the zeros before your numbers will also be removed)
8. use kies to restore the contacts from the contact file generated from gmail using the import/export button...
9. do note though that google and samsung kies has somewhat different type of field naming and arrangement so your contacts will have different labels and all... that's what you get for pressing the merge button

is it possible to just remove the entry for "Outlook email" from showing up in the drop down list in the messaging screen?
I have
GMail
Outlook E-mail
Text/Multimedia
Tigermail
but I would like Outlook to not even show up on that list? Is there anywhere in the registry it can be removed? I don't want to uninstall it, just make it not appear in that menu.
Thank you!!

yes you can do that... all you need to do is go into your active sync and go to sync options and uncheck all the section that have email.
That didn't work. I still have Outlook in the menu

Looks the same as the screen shot on my Wing.
If you actually use Outlook, it probably won't clear until you remove evrything in it. Just a hunch, I have no factual data for my guess. I was able to remove from ActiveSync, but I never used it.

When I am in messaging there is a drop down option which has all the different accounts. I was a little thrown off by the picture at first too.
there is nothing in Outlook. I've never used it, never touched it... nothing in there at all.
I was able to get the Outlook account to disappear from my Messaging account list by renaming the registry key :
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\ActiveSync
to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\ActiveSyncx

by doing this, you will lose the capability to hear a sound when you receive a text message.
Yes, I also lost the notification sounds. A less than ideal situation.
Doing this didn't remove "outlook" from my messaging ... it only literally renamed it in the folder list ... so know it just shows up in the list as whatever new name it was renamed to
Anyone have any new info on this by any chance?
If there is a way to do it i would like to know as well, i never use outlook and it takes up unnecessery space...
yeah, I think it's annoying as hell in the messaging list.
it would be nice if we could figure out how to make it simply just not show up. There has to be some really simple way to suppress it.
Bringing this back up to see if there is a solution yet.
When First syncing my phone I had the email checked to sync and Outlook showed up. I had to clear storage on my phone and when I set up the new partnership, making sure email wasnt checked, Outlook is no longer in my options. I dont know if this is ideal for you for the risk of resetting to the defaults, but thats the only way I know to get rid of it.

Is it just after syncing or when you first set up the sync partnership? Because as you are setting up the partnership, if it is checked, it wont go away later (ie unchecking during a sync).

hi, how did you do the hotmail contact import? which sofrware you use?
i tried that but failed.
So you want to Import all you hotmail contacts to phones contact list? or you want to delete them from your contact list?
If you just want to hide them you can go to the contacts app then hit the menu key and choose display options and deselect "Google". This doesn't remove the contacts from your phone but will hide them in your contacts list.
Hope this helps.
OMG...Thanks you very much littlegreiger. I was annoyed by all those unwanted contacts in Contact list.
Thanks for the tip!

Import Contacts from Hotmail Into my Samsung Epic 4G Sprint phone
I just got rid of my HTC touch pro cause of hacking problems and low security and decided to try the EPIC SAMSUNG 4G provided with SPRINT..so far Im not impressed with the flexibility of many applications such as the blue tooth is far less flexible in features then with the WINDOWS mobile and its apps...I also am having a hard time getting rid of downloaded notifications at the top of the app that appear after you make a sync and send over contacts or other files.....Were am I going with this?...I tried to move my contacts over by importing them into the new devise like it would work with a windows mobile devise by simply adding the hotmail account. That doesnt work at all or didn't for me! I set up the hotmail account but there was not option to import the contacts after. None of my 1000 contacts imported into the new EPIC phone. So I attempted to do a blue tooth sync. This also didn't, work It said it sent across 998 files for contacts but instead it only sent over 400 now I dont know what is missing and need to completely restart the phone to try another method. I have tried going into the sprint store and moving contacts their but they are not any better. The last time I tried to transfer my contacts from one HTC to another they moved the contacts but omitted the notes section and also the category leaving me clueless to who the people were since many have the same name and I left notes, it did this to all 800 contacts at the time. It seems this is a pain in the butt. Does anybody know how to import hotmail contacts efficiently into the EPIC PHONE ..Help.
Hi All,
I'd like to come back to the original question:how to delete a bunch of contacts.
I know how to show only the ones from google, but the others are still there and I want to set the space free. deleting them one by one is an effort I'd like to avoid.
Thanks
Does anyone know if it's possible to have multiple contact lists?
I know that you can categorize your phone entries into different categories.
Work, Personal etc etc.
This is *NOT* what I am looking for.
I would like to have completely separate contact lists/files.
Is it possible and if so how would you do this?
TIA
yes you can
each email account will contain its own contact list

Thanks, but it's not quite what I'm looking for.
Yes you can create numerous e-mail accounts (Google etc.) and have contacts in each of them, but there is still ONLY ONE Phone contact list to display.
I'm looking for multiple 'Phone' contact lists.
when you go into Display Options you will see:
-Phone
-Google (e-mail1)
-Google (e-mail2)
- etc.
Only ONE Phone list.
So again, is it possible to have multiple Phone contact lists, and if so how would you set it up?
I wouldn't mind even being able to rename the default Phone list and then opening up a second, if it were possible.
TIA
it works even with Yahoo and Hotmail accounts
each of your email address will be able to hold its own contact list for both phone, emails, etc
i have 5 hotmails accounts each with its own set of contact numbers/email address
3 from yahoo, and 12+ from google
so it's very easy to keep work stuff in 1 account, personal stuff on 2nd account, private stuff on 3rd account, family stuff on 4th account, Girlfriend #1 contacts on 5th account, Girlfriend #2 contacts on 6th account, Wife contacts on 7th account, another wife on 8th account, your secrect admirers on 9th account, your buddies on 10th account, you rich uncle jorge that owns an island in the caribe with 10 wife private jet and yatch that secretly spare you a million dollar on the side and all his not so clean business partners on 11th account, your lawyers and attornesy contacts on 12th account....
you get the idea
inside the SGS phone they all seem perfectly fine and normal as one huge list, but when you look in details, each number/email is associated with your specified email contact list from any of Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail
it's that easy, i love this phone, it's just perfect for multi account managements

But there's the rub!
One huge list.
I don't want a huge list, EVEN if it can later be VIEWED in different ways.
I want a list in one separate file, that can't be accessed unless you load up that particular file.
Can it be done?
TIA

it might be possible with some Contact Management app, but not with the build in Contact app that came with the phone
there's the category option, which you don't want
and there is always the filter by option
the search option is very natural as well, just type what you think it's the name or number, and it comes up right away
even though my contact list is huge, i've never had trouble finding quickly (less than 5 sec) the contact info i needed

Thanks. Can you please explain a bit more about this option?
I can't seem to find it. Is it a flexible filter? Many options to filter by?
The only thing I see at the moment is filter by whether the contacts have a phone number or not.
Can you filter by whether or not the contacts have a note saying "Green shirt"?
Hi,
I am using corporate mail on Mail application, POP account SSL security,
Also, I have same setup for Microsoft Outlook on laptop,
Sometime, I am re-receiving old mails, which I deleted on phone and mail server, but not in Outlook.
Any ideas why this is heppening?
I noticed that this "pantom" mails I receive after I use Outlook.
It is not big problem, but sometime it is annoing.
Also, when I flash my Note with new ROM and set-up mail account, I am receiving dosens of mails, which are currently deleted from server, is it possible that those mails recovered from Titanium backup? (I am doing "restore data" for some applications after I flash new ROM, including Mail APK, but still I need to manually configure mail account, because Titanium is not restoring mail setting)
first is sync setting in outlook vs phone. check those.
I dont get the phantom part.
anyways in titanium you can restore email separate from accounts which is why you have to set it up manually
why not set it to push and have it synched via your email instead of restoring it? that way you prevent certain scenarios
Next time when you backup your app with titanium backup make sure that in preference there is a option backup external data is on/selected

I do not have synced Outlook with phone, because in Outlook I have almost all received and sent mail (outlook file size is around 1gb) and in phone I keep most important ones
Under "phantom" I mean mails, which should not be there, because they where deleted on my phone and on mailserver too, and sometime I am receiving mail notofications without sender, or theme details, like this one:

cool,
sync I mean outlook to mailserver (update one way/twoway, keep/delete on both etc), the same for phone to server. Those kind of settings. Its strange on server the messages look like they remain deleted there.
phantoms are weird, buggers, havent seen it myself thought.
I guess with menu button, or in settings from your mail app you can put sorting newest on top perhaps.

I checked, setup is according parameters, which is standard for most mail application,
mailbox type both phone and Outlook is POP3, just one difference (defined by me) from phone when I delete mail, it doesn't deletes on server, but from Outlook it does,
Also, recently I noticed, that my Gmail account is not syncing correctly: if receive mail on Phone and read, archive or delete them, still when I open gmail from browser those mails are shown as unread
Well I was foolish enough to not disable Verizon Cloud as soon as possible. And it backs up pretty close to everything. Including contacts and texts. This isn't Galaxy S6 specific but I'm posting it here for fellow S6 edge people. Mods, if you'd like this moved elsewhere please do. Here's how to purge your data from the service without having to go on the VZW website:
Photos / Videos / Music / Documents
In the Verizon Cloud app open up the left drawer and go to Settings
For What to back up unselect Photos, Videos, Music, and Documents.
In the left drawer go to All Files
Enter the Mobile directory
Long press on your device's directory to select it. Tap the menu button and click delete.
To verify all four were deleted look at the other sections of the app and they should be empty.
Messages
As far as I can tell this is the only way to delete your backed up messages from the application.
Put your device into Airplane Mode and re-enable WiFi. This is to prevent new messages from getting lost.
In the Verizon Cloud app open up the left drawer and go to Settings
For What to back up make certain Messages is selected.
Use your preferred SMS / MMS backup solution to backup all your messages. Titanium Backup works very well for me. To do this open Titanium Backup and tap Menu. Select Backup data to XML... and once its done just save it locally to your device. I've also had luck on other devices with the SMS Backup & Restore app.
In your SMS app delete every single conversation / thread.
Close the Verizon Cloud app fully for good measure. Open it.
On the home screen of the app you should see something about having "X" number of messages.
Tap the menu button and select Back up now.
Depending on the number of messages you have saved this will take a few minutes. The app appears to go through each message individually saved in the "cloud" and deletes them one by one.
After sync has been completed the app should say "0 messages" are present
Now you may disable message syncing in the Cloud app.
Restore your backup. In Titanium Backup the restore option is in the same menu as the backup option.
Disable Airplane Mode.
Contacts
No luck on this yet, unfortunately. Deleting contacts on your device will work (just as it did with messages) but that will delete your contacts off Google and elsewhere too. You'll have to use the web interface. Uncheck "Contacts" syncing in the app before you go deleting anything on the site.
Bonus: How do I access the contacts and Verizon cloud storage website if I am not the primary phone number on the account?
I'll admit this took me hours to figure out the first time. It's completely non-obvious that the primary account cannot access the Cloud data for subaccounts or other numbers. Scenario: Your phone number is part of a family plan or something and it is not the master/primary number associated with the account.
Login to Verizon Wireless as the primary account holder.
Add the number/person who needs access as an "Account Manager." I believe this can be found under the My Profile section.
Logout. You should get a text and email for the number/email specified in the account management step.
Login to this new account with the new number and temporary password.
Setup your profile as requested.
You are now able to access the Cloud data online from this account for this number.
Perhaps there is an easier way to do this without needing to add the other number as an account manager but I do not know of it.
After you've removed everything from Verizon Cloud you can safely remove/disable/freeze it. And hopefully never need to worry about it again until inevitably buy another Verizon phone.
Do backups to Verizon Cloud automatically start once you activate the phone? I tried opening the app but it was getting me to accept their terms and conditions, and I'd rather not accept them in the chance that doing so does activate their backup service.

My apologies. I didn't get a notification for your post. I believe it does backup some things before you accept the EULA even though it shouldn't. If it has backed up some of your data and you want to remove it without using the web interface you'll need to accept the EULA so you can enter the app and follow what I outlined.

I'm not sure since I cannot remember. I do know that there was something that could not be safely removed from the VZ Cloud without deleting it off your device at the same time. It might've been texts? If true then I probably backed up everything else just in case it deleted photos, etc.
Just go to sync settings
What i did to get rid of excess contacts is i swiped down thee notification bar, held down the 'sync' tool to get to the sync settings, then i removed verizon cloud from the accounts. (Note 5 Marshmallow)

From my understanding of VZ Cloud from almost a year ago: If you've completely disabled Verizon Cloud new media should not be uploaded. If you disable Verizon Cloud without deleting the media still on Verizon Cloud that media will stay up there but new media won't be added.
