Cant restore CWM backup - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday, I tried to change ROM (to check it out) so before this I did a backup in CWM.
What a surprise when CWM didnt restore this backup. I was looking through the internet for solution and I found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15431672&postcount=24
I have same problem as in first post of this thrade (when restoring data, the whole process is stopped) but this solution seems to be for HTC Desire. What could I do if I want data back?
Please help me.

r u using same version of CWM to backup and restore?
new version not backward compatible with an older version backup

Yes, it is the same version

Did you chaged you kernel ? because some kernel and roms have different CWM versions.eg: version 4 backup is not copatible with 5cwm

No no, i didnt change anything. The problem is described in that link, it seems that some versions of cwm have problem with restore and have to be fixed than the restore should work. But I dont know how to fix it.

Just simply update CWM to a newer version before restoring the backup.
I pushed the commit long time ago so any "recent" cwm (5.x) will solve the problem.
Hope this helps

Thanks a lot LinoX, but there is only CWM v4.0.1.5 for x8 on XDA.
Is it useful (should I try it?) or do I need newer version? (as you wrote 5.x.x)

if it is an unmodified build (from source) then yes (sometimes there're custom modified builds to add functions. Those recoveries can be problematic because they break more than they fix. Recoveries are really important and you should install only "trusted" ones.)
Try with this one and let us know if it suffices (I'm sure 5.x has the fix, I'm not sure if 4.x had it too...but you shouldn't do any damage..at most it will halt again when restoring)

It seems to work but after first restore there were many apps not be restored, so i did another one. It is better now but still there are about 5 apps not restored plus stock Internet browser (dont know if some other system apps too).
I think it is strange that after every restore there is not same result and not what was backuped at all.
Where could be a problem and is it worth to try restore until everything is restored?
It is true that backup was created by cwm3.2(seems ported from x10mini) included in gingerdx rom i use.

Oh, i realized something.
There was a problem with my SD recently. I couldnt copy one file from sd to pc. And antutu benchmark always crashes when testing card reading.
Damaged sd may causes problems with restore i mean.

maybe...

The last thing i'd like to ask.
Is there any tool with i could extract certain apps from the backup?

excuse me,
what is the latest cmw version for x8? v4?
thanks b4

I found as a zip file only v4.
But there is v5 in custom kernels included.

Hi, I have a nandroidbackup made using CWM 5.0.2.7. And I want to restore it. Now I have CyanogenMod7 and I have Clockworkmod 5.0.0.6.
So I copied the nandroidbackup from external_sd to internal_sd, and now when it shows up in my restore menu.
Is there any problem that the backup was made with Clockworkmod 5.0.2.7 and I restore it with Clockworkmod 5.0.2.6 ?

[Q] Backup/Recovery account issues

Running CM7RC
Decided to try one of the themes so I did a backup first using ROM Manager.
Didn't like the themes so I tried to restore.
It is coming up without my google account and there is no option to add it in the account settings.
I've wiped and reapplied the backup and also fixed permissions to no avail so far.
I'm finishing a 2nd fix permissions after wiping everything (even Davlik).
Has anyone ever had this happen to them? If so, what was the fix?
I'd rather get it restored than start over...
Restoring the account settings in Titanium doesn't help either.
I'm screwed, aren't I?
Do you have the Google apps installed (market, etc)?

Yes, happened to me many times when I flashed CM and forgot to flash gapps.
Download gapps-gb-20110120-signed.zip from here: http://goo-inside.me/google-apps/ and flash from recovery.
Did you use clockworkmod 3.0? It's been known to messed things up during nandroid restore.
Flash GAPPS like other have mentioned.
If not full wipe and start over, use AMon Ra or an older CWM version

Yeah, they were there when I restored the backup but they wouldn't open because there was no google account in the phone. Could flashing gapps fix this?

Yes, it is cwm 3.0
For now I've done a full wipe and started over and after a couple of days of tweaking I'll likely forget the incident. I might try restoring and flashing gapps but I have my doubts as to whether that would work.
I'm going to have to start being more vigilant about backing up apps/settings/data in other ways if a nandroid backup isn't dependable...
Thanks for the comments.
OK, I just flashed RC2 and the account issue popped back up so it isn't necessarily that backup I did before.

[Q] A newbie Q: is CMW a nandroid backup?

Very sorry for newbie Q. I've been using Android for one month now. Though I've rooted, and install CWM, it seems that my knowledge is fragmented. For instance, I installed ROM Manager and ClockWorkMod. Both have backup/restore option. Is Nandrloid backup similar to this? Or CWM is the nandroid backup?
Coz I'm thinking about flashing the baseband and it says i need to do nandroid backup.
thanks
The backup feature in CWM is called a nandroid backup

Two more questions:
1. I read from a few threads that restore function of CWM may not necessarily working. How do we know when we do the back up that it'll work when we need to restore?
2. The CWM that i downloaded is 3.0.8. I read somewhere that the newest is 3.2 something. How can i upgrade to that? It seems that 3.2 can solve this restore failure.
thanks
If you look in the CWM 3.2.0.0 thread, you'll notice there is a zip file, in that is the recovery image and a batch file that will install it for you.

I did trust CWM with backup of my system before i tried cyanmod ROM... I have three backups on my SD card and CWM restores fine, but system wont boot. So i had to build my phone all new again.
Dont trust CWM
After rebuilding you could have have restored the data backup (not system and boot) and you'd have been OK.
but the need to still rebuild still equates to CWM backups are useless.

That's only true for the original ROM, for custom ROM it's a perfect solution, you just have to flash the ROM again after the restore.

now, i'm confused. So, it's not enough that we restore but we need to flash it again? Like in nvflash or smartflash? Then what is it that we restore?
Also, I just flashed CMW 3.2. Do i need to create a new backup since currently my back up is from CMW 3.0.8?
By flash the ROM again, I meant run the zip file with the custom ROM on from Cwm. You will then have all your data and settings back.

So, if i want to go back to stock rom, i run the zip with stock rom from CWM? thanks.
Do you really have a zip file with stock rom? I don't think so.

One could be made though, I suppose.
Sorry I'm confused now
CWM backups don't work? is that why I can't see them when I open CW Rom Manager? I can see them on the SD card but not in the program...
If these backups do not work, is there another way of making backups that work? I don't want to be left with a bricked phone if I try out some ROMS...
I saw a youtube video that showed how to use NVflash, but it was for the G2X and incredibly complicated, battery was taken out, and the phone was plugged in/out of the pc several times, etc... Is theres something similar for the O2X?
Cheers

Yes, it's the link below. Unless I'm mistaken. But not sure if it's compatible with my country.

edit: the link is BIN file not zip. So, with stock ROM, nandroid backup is useless then?

[Q] Finallly rooted my N1 - so what is next for a new ROM?

Well after having my N1 for two years (I bought it on launch day) I finally got up the never to root it using this process.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653
Had a few heart stopping moments as the script hung until I realised that while I had download the SDK to get the USB driver I hadn't actually installed the driver for the phone.
Confirmed that it was rooted by downloading Titanium Backup and doing a backup.
For a new ROM (as yet undecided) is a Titanium Backup good enough or should I also do the cyanogenmod clockworkmod recovery?
Should I be able to restore my apps and settings after the new ROM using the Titanium Backup?
You wanna do a Nandroid or Full Image Backup with Clockwork. Titanium is just as you said apps and data. Although, I think CWM has a system bu option. Don't use CWM anymore use Amon_Ra. So not up on steps. The post 3.0 CW's have had issues and are documented.
You can restore apps and data at any time with Titanium, but I think to do system stuff you need to be restoring to same rom.
I highly recommend Nandroids and sdcard backups before doing any new flashing.
Start with CM7 roms the stable ones, then move on. Read OP pages fully and scan threads front to back for info/problems etc

use the pre 3.0 versions
Let's try Amon_RA Recovery
Best recovery by far. Never any issues. Been using this version for months and months. Perfect with flashing, backing up, restoring, and partitioning.
are you experienced with fastboot commands adb etc
The downside with Amon_RA is it doesn't give you the option to wipe the /system partition. I have stuck with a pre-3.0 version of ClockworkMod for this reason. There is a new recovery out there called 4EXT that is based on ClockworkMod, but doesn't have the issue with corrupting partitions. He has also added a TON of new features. This does seem to be the best on out there now. He even just released a touch-based version. The thread is in the development section.

[Q] Getting it all 'back' just in case ....

Hello all,
I have rooted my galaxy note, have recovery working and think i am ready to tweak my machine.
I have created a backup from recovery so am i correct to think that after flashing, lets say, custom kernal,i can get it all back to where i am now by restoring this backup made from recovery?
And same goes for flashing and trying ROCKETROM?
Love this forum by the way, keep it up!
you get back the exact status of which the backup was made from.
you can easily check out different roms and get back to your old system by restoring from the backup (dont forget to geht them specific names as they are named by date+time)

Now how's that for a quick reply, thanx two_handed,making different backups while trying different stuff is a good one!
The kernel will be over-written by your restore.
If you flash a new kernel and then restore your previous backup, you will lose the new kernel and return to your original setup.

There is just one thing to bear in mind.
Some kernels use different recoveries than 'stock' (e.g. Chainfire's modified recovery). If you use one of these, your restore might not work.
Don't worry. If you flash the Chainfire kernel again using the CWM app or Mobile ODIN, you can then restore your backup.

[Q] Latest recovery for I9305?

I'm just wondering if there's any better recovery version (6.0.x.x) for the I9305 available?
I am using Touch 6.0.1.5 posted by zyonee from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943317
It does have a few issues namely that the incremental backup does not work from recovery afaik. However I use Online Nandroid for all my backups now anyway.
