Hi there,
I'm using CM7 on my Galaxy S with kernel 2.6.35.12-gdf10700 [email protected]#1
Can anyone please tell me if this is the "recommended" kernel for CM7?
I've read that Hardcore Speedmod kernel is meant to be the "best" but is that still the case?
Can I use any of Hardcore's latest ones listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044519
http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2011/10/samsung-galaxy-s-download-speedmod.html
because apparently they are not to be used with CyanogenMod?
Many thanks
Stock kernel is the best if you want to avoid bugs.
Do NOT flash any other kernels than those which are made for CM/MIUI.
Here are few:
Glitch: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041532
Fugu: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112568
Zach's kernels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053304
You can try those, but for me stock is the best.
Many thanks.
I was just a little confused because Cyanogen's own wiki suggests using the Speedmod kernel:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
so I wasn't sure whether stock kernels are compatible with CM7.
So... the stock kernels (http://samsung-updates.com/rooted-stock-kernels-for-samsung-roms/) are fully compatible with CM7 then?
Thanks
It says flash speedmod because by flashing that you'll get CWM which you need to flash CM.
And no, do not use those kernels. Those are for STOCK ROMs.
When we said "stock", we meant the kernel that is included by the CM already.
Go to developement section and find topic with [Kernel][CM/MIUI] or something like that. Those are compatible with CM.
Just check links I gave you.

Got it, thanks - when you said "stock" I thought you meant the ones from Samsung directly.
In that case, I'll just stick with what CM includes and I won't mess around with them.
Thanks.
NP
Just hit "thanks" button if I helped.
I add that to my sig.

Hi Guys
I am upgrading to a SGS i9000. Previously had a Motorola Milestone, custom kernel is new to me.
I've been searching and couldn't find anything. I want to load gingerbread XXJVK and use SpeedMod Kernel. Will this cause any problems? If I do experience problems would it be straight forward to go back to stock kernel?

Speedmod is a kernel designed to run with Froyo, not Gingerbread. Many custom 2.3.3 ROMs have you install Speedmod as an intermediary step just to get CWM installed, but it will not work with JVK. You will need to install one of the kernels specifically designed to support JVK.
I STRONGLY suggest you read the many threads posted here about JVK and the process of flashing to it, AFTER you have read the stickies about flashing ROMs on the i9000. Foreknowledge is always better than Support Calls.

Thanks for the advice. I keep going back to the stickies about flashing ROMs to i9000. I guess I will keep reading.
I would wait for the release of Gingerbread . Once its released the devs are going to have a more complete set up to work with .

There's no source to work from... so there's no speedmod as of now. Your best shot could be supercurio's hacked JVK kernel which can convert partitions to ext4. But remember, the rom is still a beta.
My SGS came today. I'm going to look at flashing darky's rom tonight.
I have Cyanogenmod7 RC3 on my milestone at the moment but I don't think I'll miss the 2.3 features.
Again thanks everyone for the advice
hi guys,
i'm a noob.
need some help over here.
i'm using galaxy S i9000.
i rooted my device with speedmod kernel k13e-500hz #36 but firmware is v2.2.
is theer anyway to upgarde to v2.3 with rooted kernel??
many thanks
Hi all,
I'm new to android and some things I do not understand, for example I have the galaxy captivate with the following characteristic:
Rom Android 2.3.4 I897UCKH3
boog_kh3_kernel3
su-2.3.2-efgh-bin-signed.zip
I updated my cellphone using these files, and all works fine but I wanted install a new kernel the last talondev, but after install it I think that my sgs is on soft bricked, displays the logo of AT & T and then starts "loading talon...", but then restarts.
This kernel can be used with the rom? it is compatible? or What should I do to choose a kernel?
Best regards
Talon is I9000 port kernel you are using native I897 rom. Use Samurai, Corn kernel or Boog's kernel. Actually Im not sure there is a corn or samurai kernel for KH3. I know they have it for KJ roms.
I have to find kernels for KH3, right?
Thanks
Correct. Or update to a newer leak like KJ3 as a example.
And I can change to a custom rom? or that such the cm7 rom?
I talk to do this to exit the soft brick and have it back.
thanks
CM7 has its own special instructions. I haven't kept up with it so go to their thread and read. But ya you can change to custom roms like Fusion IX, Fasty and others that are based of a newer firmware version.

You need to flash back to boog kernel. If this does not work it is best you re-flash to stock KH3 with the one-click solution here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Choose the one WITHOUT bootloaders since you already have those on the phone. It is safer that way.
Regarding CM7 ROMs. You must know they are completely different system compared to the normal Captivate ROMs. Read this thread before flashing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978150
Don't get me wrong. THEY ARE VERY GOOD CUSTOM ROMs...absolutely. But you cannot mix and match.....Follow CM7 instructions strictly.
thanks for the replies, I will be reading information about their opinions.
thank you very much , I'll let you know the results.

Why would you send him to the nightly page and not the 7.1 stable current nightlys are a bit broken.
I am not amused by your phones performance
I've been using all kinds of kernels for Cappy. What I just want to know is what's exactly the difference between this kernel: [KERNEL][XWJW1][2/1/11] Corn Kernel I9000-C v1.05 w/Audience support!
And this one:
KERNEL][KK4][1/28/11] Corn Kernel v7.06 from Source (OC, BLN, Voodoo Sound, etc.)!
Thank you guys in advance.

This kernel [KERNEL][XWJW1][2/1/11] Corn Kernel I9000-C v1.05 w/Audience support! is for i9000 based roms.
This kernel [KERNEL][KK4][1/28/11] Corn Kernel v7.06 from Source (OC, BLN, Voodoo Sound, etc.)! is for i897 based roms.
that's what i first thought.that and the audience chip is maybe onky supported in one of them.but i thought there had to be a better reason.guess i was wrong.
thank you for answer.i appreciate it.
how can you tell if a rom is i897 based or i9000?
are kk4 cappy roms and xxjvu or jw1 i9000 roms? if i got that right.

You got it. Ones that start with a K are i897, ones that start with a J are i9000.
thank you sir.
I tried using both kernels for apex and neither of them worked.
but i also read somewhere that apparently corn kernels dont like ext4.
not necessarily... cappy had some that started with J way back when....
the roms that are ported will usually say so, but all roms come with a working kernel for it.
then if you want to change kernels, for one reason or another, you look for one that supports your rom build version, no matter what you will end up searching for the right kernel.

Audience chip works in both corn kernels. That's what separates corn from the other i9000 kernels (among other things). That way, if you prefer i9000 roms over i897 roms, you can still get audience support. The catch is you have to flash an i897 modem also, which for some people breaks Bluetooth calls.

Apex is an i9000 based rom so im not sure why the i9000 corn kernel didnt work. I would recommend you try some of the ics roms. Im on Doc's Master ICS and im getting the best battery life and speed from ics roms than i ever got on gingerbread roms.

Corn Kernel I9000-C v1.05 supports ext4 - I'm on Apex 12.4 with that kernel and ext4 without any issues in that regard. I ensured I was on RFS before flashing corn and then converted to ext4 via the kernel's recovery.
Sorry if this gets asked a lot, but I have just checked for the brickbug and I have it. I looked on the wiki but the links are dead except for a couple of guides and I don't know which ones are reliable.
Is there a guide that will help me root and flash CM or PA? I've done similar with a SGS2, so I know what I'm doing, I just don't know which kernels are safe to use or which method to use to not destroy my Note.
Get a root-kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
flash it from recovery and you will get root. which kernel to choose is in the thread too.
once this kernel is installed you it will be safer to flash different roms.

Thanks that worked perfectly and simply.
Just have a couple more quick questions: I used to use a LINARO/SABERMOD CM build on my SGS2, is there anything equivalent for the Note?
Also is there anything close to Dorimanx in terms of features? That was a great kernel on SGS2.
I went with CM 10.2 btw.
There is nothing optimised. No best rom or kernel. See what suits you better. Roms like PA and PAC have lots of customizations and kernels like NX has lot of tweaking avaliable.

Hello... Check development and original development forum for kernel threads. You can flash most of them I guess over any ROM unless specified by the OP.
Some also provide different kernels for different Android versions.
Ex: 6.x, 7.x, 7.1.x
Read the first posts of these threads or use the search function and simply download the proper version for your ROM/Android version.
Some offer some extra features, but overall you can tweak most of them as you want with a kernel manager app: kernel adiutor, Ex kernel manager, etc...
Good luck...
