[Q] Nexus S binaries with Vibrant? - Vibrant Android Development

I'm starting to learn how to compile Android ICS from source, and thanks to Shen's tutorial, I'm starting to "get it".
So I do have a few questions before I get started.
1) Does the Nexus S and the Samsung Vibrant use the exact same hardware?
2) Can I use the Nexus S binaries listed here (http://code.google.com/android/nexus/drivers.html) for the Vibrant if question #1 is a "yes"?
I was going to buy a Nexus S or GNexus just for the purpose of learning, but if my Vibrant is basically an Nexus S, I say why not use it? It's not my daily phone.
FYI, it already has ICS Passion v9.2 on it, and has an FFC (I added it). I would just like to get started in compiling my own ROM for the sake of learning, starting a new hobby, and hopefully able to contribute to the Android community in which I have already benefitted as a ROM-flashing enthusiast.

Theres a Q and A forum, just fyi.

Actually, if a MOD can move this thread, that'll be better.

how do i get the best software for my g1

hey i was wondering how do i get like a really legit software on my g1 its brand new it has not been rooted or anything
you could try opening your eyes and looking around....
1. i do not think you know what the word legitimate means
2. This is in the wrong section.
3. The sentence made no sense.
just buy a nexus it is what I am going to do since all the devs are getting them and then are forgetting about us....KING, CYANOGEN lmao
When you say legit software, do you mean apps? That's the only thing I can think of as of now, but if that is what you're saying, you could always use the Market... if you don't have a data plan you can use your WiFi or http://www.cyrket.com/m/android/ for most of your Android app needs. Now, if you would bother to post in the Q&A section, you wouldn't be getting a smart ass comment... but that's just my two cents.

[Q] should this subforum be closed???

hello everyone, I recently purchased a dell streak 7 and actually love it but have been disappointed in the lack of rom development for the device. it makes me feel like i purchased the device that nobody cares about. everyday i check the development section just to see the same post. there is never anything new so i was wondering why this sub-forum still open???? I dont think we really need a whole sub-forum just to see when dj steve releases an update for the same rom. One developer should not warrant a whole sub-forum. This makes me wish i would have hung on to my g-tab.

U can just as easily leave xda .... it takes time to pick up extra developers. Learn yourself and put out your own rom !!!
I've started on it myself..... I know a few others who have too.... learning takes time ! ALSO FYI, We already have 2 different froyo builds, 1 honeycomb build, and Ubuntu partially functioning. I've talked with 2 people who have already started trying their hand at gingerbread. Nothing official there yet though.
Most of us have jobs and families..... time isn't so abundant. If u have the time then do something about it and stop complaining
Donating to developers is also an incentive ........
PS
mods please move this where it belongs.
avoid Android - get an Apple device

[QUESTION]Ice Cream Sandwich on Galaxy Tab?

I know it has been announced only a few hours ago and the source is not available yet. But, when Google finally releases the source code, will there ever be a ROM for the original Galaxy Tab?
I am curious because the answer to this question will help me resist the new tablet temptation
Having a hard time with HC, I doubt it with ICS....even the GB ROMs are not very polished, like Overcome causes warming up problem....
It can be short...
Maybe it will arrive sooner as we think, not with cyanogenmod, even if i want it on my tab, but with MIUI, I just read on the MIUIteam fr that MIUI have the source since they have the status of developpers with the XIAOMI, and they are already work on the Mi-one and the two nexus, so maybe the us team who develop the MIUI Rom for our tab will be able to port ISC on the galaxy tab?
I just hope that we can have ISC on our tab before Christmans it will be great!
ICS
From the news:
"Gabe Cohen from Google claims that most Gingerbread devices may have an upgrade to Android 4.0, claiming that it is theoretically compatible with any Android 2.3.x device"
I would presume (going off the little snippits of info I've gleaned) that almost ANY device will be able to run ICS in some capacity or another since it is designed to be all encompassing. (Think Ubuntu for comparison) Admittedly some older devices will struggle due to the specs but this is the same for every old device.
I could be completely WAY-OFF the mark but I believe el-goog is heading down the Canonical Road and pretty soon we will have OS's that just play well together, be it on mobile, laptop, PC, TV yadda yadda yadda......and then we'll see a small moon appear on the horizon
No wait, "That's not a moon.....It's a SPACE STATION!" cue dramatic music and suddenly everyone and their dog will be screaming "IT'S A TRAAAAAP!" "TURN THIS SHIP AROUND!" but by then we'll all be caught in the tractor beam and headed for a Schwartz-off with Dark Helmet......
Jus sayin
Developers get new devices and forget about old ones. Time's working against us...

I believe there will be a rom, not before Christmas tho
At least not a stable one.
Will Samsung release ICS for Galaxy Tab ??
Do you think people will port it or wait for source code.

How does a question not belong in general? Is the general sub forum not for General discussion. Don't mean to be rude just wondering how that does not encompass a question (heck a development thread could in theory fall under the general category), i understand that there is a specific category for q&a and trying to order the chaos; it just seems to me you can't really claim anything doesn't belong in general in order to delete and or warn a user.

This, to me is open for discussion, and not a clear cut yes or no. There is a gray (British spelling ) area as you could say the General section is full of questions.
But to clarify, If I see any threads with [Q] or [Question] in the thread title or post, in the General section, it will be deleted & the user Warned, not Infracted, just warned.
If they haven't bothered checking what section they are posting in, its highly likely they haven't bothered searching for the answer either, but that is another kettle of fish
This is all so incredibly exciting... looks like an amazing release and I really hope that I can put it on my SGT very soon!

Andy: Thank you for being awesome - lots of admins I've worked with throughout the years would probably throw a hissy over perceived insurrection when questions of protocol are asked. Your professionalism is greatly appreciated.
I am so glad that google appears to have gone with an open model this time around - it looks like they actually worked to maximize compatibility with the wide range of GB running devices and made everything pretty portable. of course we'll know more about that in a week or so when google drops the sources on us.
from what i understand, this will be the first time we've had proper public sources since the GB release.
the new feature set looks like it'll be pretty amazing so long as they optimized it well... I don't really care if newer fancier phones and tabs have more resources... more resources should allow you to do more things better, NOT an excuse to settle for sub-par optimization of code because "oh, it doesn't matter anymore, all new devices have enough ram and cpu speed to handle it!"... </rant>

I agree!!! More so if ICS is the hybrid between honeycomb (tabs only) and gingerbread (smartphones only), it should work on Original Galaxy(OG) tab, at least for those upgraded to gingerbread. Now we have OG 7" on 2.3, sg-tab 7 plus on 3.2 and possibly sg-tab 7.7 on ??4.0(I guess), sammy better get ICS on all otherwise it'll be hard selling all three.

I thing the original sgt7 is no longer part of the lineup i belive it has been discontinued. So the 7 plus is 3.2, as is the 10.1, and the 7.7. Samsung has settled on honeycomb for the lot but have already stated that each of these tablets will get upgraded to ics "real soon". On the flipside they all but confirmed that ics wont be coming to the original sgt7 making me very sad.
Samsung imho has really bad support for os updates in that they taje forever to release them and they are notorious for droping hardware / os support way too fast. My original sgt7 came out only about a year ago (last nov iirc).

yes, that's true, there is lots of private third-party ICS development going on to get a good AOSP rom up and functional. I think that's going to be most dependent on the galaxy tab ics dev thread here and then the cyanogen guys will go ahead and hack it smooth with extra features and the like as they generally do. I was specifically tallking about samsung OEM rom support.
and FIY, there is already a worked over SDK port of honeycomb for the galaxy tab 7 that seems to run pretty smooth that you might want to check out here if you're interested. the ICS stuff looks like it's shaping up, but I expect it to be at least a few months before everything becomes smooth enough for use as a daily rom.

LinuxMint, Ubuntu and why/would you recommend?

So as the title says, which are you using? And why?
And would you recommend it? Answer in the thread AND the poll.
Let me start, I'm using LinuMint 12 and i use it because it is the OS that I create My custom ROM's on, and becuase its fast. I recommend it to ROM makers. 10/10 stars
Your turn
The Minty freshness without a doubt. Why?
I've been a member on the forums there for a few years now, learning and helping and they are a great bunch of guys - generally a better place than the Ubuntu forums.
Although I have stuck with Mint 10 - as I found no benefit to the later versions (either Mint or the Ubuntu it is based on) and more than a few problems, I would thoroughly recommend Mint to anyone trying to get to grips with Linux.

You had a question about linux. If you post in there, it gets bumped up and everyone who has posted in it will read the new post. Therefore getting more exposure to people in the know. Also, you keep the board cleaner by not cluttering it up with more threads on the same subject, and then threads get lost in the clutter. Just one of the rules in online forums. Search, look around, post in threads of the same subject. It's even in the XDA noob video.

## READ HERE FIRST ## -- Forum info / new moderators

Hey guys!
I've been assigned as one of the moderators for the Google Nexus 4 Forum, along with Papa Smurf151, 'cooleagle' and E.Cadro
Just a few things to keep in mind:
Please have a quick look at the Forum Rules whenever you get a chance (link in my signature).
Please treat other members how you would like to be treated.
For the Development teams to thrive, the development section needs to stay clean and tidy. Please make sure you post in the correct sections, and give us the heads-up if you see anything out-of-place, abusive, condoning warez etc.
Only original ROM development and innovative work-in-progress will be allowed in the Original Development Section.
All other ROM development, ports, hacks, and mods will be moved to the Development Section, and only if you created it. If not, it goes in General.
Reference, tutorials and how-to's belong in the General Section.
All questions belong in the Q & A Section, not in General or Development.
Do not create placeholder threads (including placeholder threads for ROMs, radios, guides, updates, tweaks, etc.).
Please no 'for sale' threads in ANY section. Use the Marketplace.
Also, if you see any thread that is in the wrong section or if you see any questionable posts/content, please don't hesitate to click the report (!) button.

Though not completely...Here goes
The announcement included this
The following are most likely “Original Development”:
Official releases of highly original and upstream customROMs(built fromthe ground up with significant original development within them Official releases/development of such original ROMs, perhaps posted by the maintainer or their nominated person. Asignificant “first” in development for a device.Significant is subjective, but it is likely something which took considerable time/effort, and is generally accepted by developers to be significant and non-trivial.
Kernels which are built with beneficial changes that are notsimply pulled fromother kernels already available. Some element of original work is expected.
Tools and utilities with a clear purpose, and which are well-made,anduseful to users. They should have an element of originality, either inpurpose or through significant improvement in the means of operation.
Significant portof a ROM from one device to another, givingenhanced features or functionality to users of the targetdevice. The port should be beneficial (a port fromtwo virtually identical devices isn’t original development, it’s winzipping, and nobody really benefits fromthis, as it’s notdevelopment)

Hey guys,
I'm very excited to be here and I cant wait to get my hands on this device. I have one question.... more so for clarification than anything else.
Currently, I compile AOKP from source for Maguro and Toroplus then I cherry pick and add in my own changed like bootanimation ect ect...
I planned to do similar work with the Nexus4. Would that type of work be allowed into the dev subforums?

hey efrant,
why do we need an "original android development" and an "android development"? This has never been an issue with nexus devices.
I understand, for instance, on a samsung device where there is one touchwiz modded rom after another.
on a nexus device, it is ALL original.

Even though we have the full source available, not everything built on that source would be considered "original", despite it being built from source. It has been decided that for something to be "original", it has to be significantly different than what is available. Syncing the AOSP repo, making a couple of changes and then building is not considered "original" for XDA purposes.
Please have a look at this for more clarification.

i agree, but it is not a problem... with the galaxy s2 (where original development originated) it was a huge problem and the development thread was cluttered. it is a great idea for devices of this nature (touchwiz)
But if someone forks cm, cherry picks what they want, and maybe adds a few things of there own...it is still not original, even though it is built from source
(no touchwiz roms are built from source)<<< I know you know this but for people reading that might not*
So with the nexus 4, in original development we are going to have 3 roms (aokp, cm and miui) then kernels and a few misc threads
anyways, seems like a waste. and a solution to a problem that doesn't exist
see <galaxy nexus forum, nexus s forum, nexus one forum>

I agree to a certain extent, and your right, there won't be many ROMs in the Original Development section. (Hopefully there will be more dev discussion threads, which I will certainly allow -- assuming that there is some sort of original development going on. See this and this as examples.)
I spend a lot of time in the GNex forum, and in there, you see tons of very similar ROMs, e.g., deodexed stock ROMs, stock ROMs with busybox, etc., etc. By having an Original Dev section, it will separate those from the real "original" ROMs. And yes, it may not be needed, but it doesn't hurt.
In any case, it was a policy that was implemented site-wide for all new devices.
