[Q] Really annoying issue or Inferior to iPhone? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First post on the forum so
be nice
Hey guys not sure if everyone similar to, me has this issue but my phone signal is awful and I can never connect to my mobile imternet except for a few occassions.
I recently came over from an iPhone 3G and have found that my phone signal is terrible in comparison.
For example
Location: In my bedroom
iPhone 3G:
Mobile signal: Full bars
Mobile Internet: Full 3G, All other networks available
Samsung Galaxy S2:
Mobile Signal: Maximum of 2 out of 4 bars.
Mobile Internet: None. Cannot pick up any form of mobile internet.
Notes:
- By mobile internet I mean non-WiFi connections.
- On O2-UK network
- Pay monthly Contract, 300 minutes, Unlimited text and 500mb Mobile Internet
-Not using a case on my phone
-Had phone for 2 weeks
- iPhone 3G was PAYG: Unlimited texts and 500mb Mobile Internet
- Had no other issues with phone
I've tried to foresee any questions but I'm sure there will be stuff I missed out,
Thanks for reading,
Tom

Have you tried flashing a different rom?

This forum is for the original Galaxy S. You might want to consider reposting in the i9100 section. By the way, signal bars mean nothing between different phones. Each manufacturer has their own way of measuring and showing signal strength.

Ooops .thanks

LTE Faster Than WiFi

In my somewhat limited testing of suburban Atlanta LTE with 2 bars of signal strength vs my 802.11n Mode Wireless Router (the Vivid is about 6 ft away from the router), it sure looks like LTE beats WiFi hands down for both down and upload speeds.

Comcast. The WiFi numbers for the Vivid are about the same as the hard wire numbers on my desktop PC.
some of the numbers i've seen for LTE posted here beat my FiOS internet 3:1... which 6 months ago I would have said is not possible.
I've observed the same results. WiFi was 10 down and 1.5 up, LTE was 21 down and 8.5 up with only 1 bar of service with the phone sitting in the same spot in the house, and I live out in the sticks. We just got ATT Uverse this summer, it just became available.... Before that all we could get was a wireless broadband that was only slightly better than dialup. Can't seem to post a pic from the phone....
Yup! This is no secret
Truth is I'm getting more enjoyment out of pointing out to the Sys Admin at work that my phone on HSPA+ is pulling speeds far and away faster than the DS3 we have LOL

Hi guys do we really need 4G or Lte these days ?
Those mobiles supports JUST one Radio frequency .. which is NOT good ..
So you will travel somewhere else 4g /lte will stop working cos of diff. frequency ..
It is about of time when mobiles will support all 4g /lte frequencies same as 3G network ..
I think DC-HSDPA is LEADER now days with brilliant speed ..
4G in UK has EE company which is completely UNACCEPTABLE ! Ridiculous prices overcharging .. NO not ready yet ..
Please leave comments below
Thnx
My phone is about 4-6 times faster than my home internet connection.
4/0.35 Mbit at home, ~20/3 on my phone.

Exactly
And what I do is I connect phone to laptop and have internet at home with great speed
Still better than my home WiFi.

I feel like I'm not getting DC-HSDPA speeds with t-mobile in NYC. No LTE yet either
Still love this phone though!
3UK, DC-HSDPA speeds are fluctuating badly, in the same spot, speeds range from 0.5/0.3 to 14/4, throughout the day, it's terrible! Pings always seem to be around 60-90 though so that's alright.
How do to check the connection status of the N4? All I see is an H in the signal bar...
Anyone found any coverage on o2

The N4 radio is not capable of showing when it is using DC-HSDPA, if you go into about phone > status, it'll tell you when using HSPA+ (HSPA+:15) but that's as high as it goes.

The radio knows perfectly well what network type it is on/band/frequency. The problem is that Android has no standard way of displaying anything other than network type. Manufacturers implement their own field test apps, which can communicate directly to the radio and get this information.
Back to the point, no phone with proper Android does. Android does not have a definition for DC-HSPA+ as a network type. This was hacked into CM, which will bite them later on like it did Samsung for LTE (certain phones will say eHRPD instead of LTE since they have conflicting constant 14 in TelephonyManager). It's fragmentation at it's finest.
That's not the point, it can utilise DC-HSDPA, but it doesn't show it in TelephonyManager, even with CM's commit, they said it only works on certain phones because the radio would not show it to the software on most phones.

Mine shows HSPA:10

If you run speedtest or another app that uses data for a few seconds, after starting a test, quickly switch to the phone status (multitasking window) and it should show HSPA+:15 whilst data is flowing.

tried it but only HSPA:8 still. probably my carrier sucks 2mb up on full bars
How strange, not exactly sure how things work in America but I think you have to sign up to a high speed, or 4G plan for HSPA+, but like I said, I'm not entirely sure. There could also be an alternate APN for high speed.
i dont see the point of having lte when you can have hspa+. i get 25/3 speeds in hungary, which is more than enough.

It is all in your settings about phone .. there is network which say HSPA 10 .. that means it is enhanced HSDPA
and in older mobiles shows HSPA 8 which is lower ..
note : u can see this only in nexus 4 ROM or this style of android..
on mine lg it doesnt say number just HSPA ..

Net connection and speed

I have just got the HTC one on t mobile in UK with a fully Monty data package, daughter has a blackberry Q5 and regialr gets the H+ signal ,yet despite being in same area I'm yet to see H+ connection and my speeds with full H signal is just over 1 Mbs is this correct or should I be seeing H+
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
People upgrading beware, you only get H+ if you are allowed to access EE in network services ,this it seems however is blocked for me (I suspect because I upgrade via a third party ) they say it's either down to my SIM or my profile going back to old t mobile days.If the new SIM doesnt sort it then they will look into it further ,but I suspect it's some firm of underhand cap on download speed unless you upgrade via t mobile direct........unless anyone else has upgraded via a third party and is getting H+,luckily my daughter has a 4g phone and her 3 g SIM only deal with t mobile gives her H+ and gives me H+ when it's put in my phone so I could prove to them it was not handset

Ok im sure i can not be the only one who has had this problem so here is a full explanation and what i think is happening.
I have been with t mobile for 4 years, i had a desire HD that would always connect to t mobile and then tmobile orange as well when they merged.
I replaced the desire HD with a HTC one x just as t mobile and orange were rolling out as EE and i noticed i was no longer given the option to connect to t mobile or tmobile orange it would use EE network and speeds and coverage improved.
So 3 days ago i updated to the HTC one i was sent new phone and new sim card(kept the same number as i did with the one x and desire hd)
First thing i noticed during set up was that although i select EE as my network the phone was displaying Tmobile not EE
So i searched for networks and EE no longer was there it was back to the old days of T mobile or T mobile/orange.Now on my account i have a sim only as well for my daughter she has a blackberry Q5 and her phone was displaying EE network and more important the faster H+ signal and when i searched networks on her phone no sign of t mobile ot t mobile orange just EE.So to test it out i swapped sims over and with her sim in my phone i now had EE and H+,while she only had t mobile.I called t mobile tech who were helpfull and said it was down to the sim and i should swap it.So i swap the sim this morning but still the same issue no EE or H+ service .So called and again and after 30 mins of talk they said they would boost my 3G signal for free(BULL****) i would say, but the issue was down to the networks mergeing and which masts provide the signal .Again load of rubbish as daughter sim works fine and i manage and i had EE on my one x for the last 18 months
So i have come to the conclusion this a sly way of throttling network speed to push people to 4G
does any other Oe owner in UK on T mobile ever get the H+ service
i have said im goign to test over the next few days
any advice would be great
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Got my issue resolved eventually,it was that network settings at T-Mobile end blocking me from EE 3g network . I had to text start to 2121 and it rest my network settings .Now there is no sign if the old T-Mobile or T-Mobile orange network I just get the choice of EE more import I now have H+ signal which is as close as possible to 4G

POLL: UK 4G PLANS And Would You Trade 3G Ulimited Data? Nexus 5 on the Way

Just trying to figure out if anyone had a previous 4G LTE plan prior to ordering the N5 and if its proved to be worth it or Not. Being New to that whole side of LTE things. How much GB allowance do you receive a month and average use total.
I have a 3G unlimited plan on O2 which are rare lately since 3 network is the only network that doesn't unlimited DAT at me moment.
Now the nexus 5 is 4G ready in the UK is it really worth chasing a 4G plan yet or wait because 3g works quite fine at moment with hotspots everywhere. Cheapest 4g plan is around £26 for 1gb I think. I didn't even mention 500mb cors that's just silly to even consider on 4G.

In the same boat as yourself at the moment - (o2 simplicity with unlimited data)... Going to switch to giff-gaff (12 quid bundle) and wait it out and see whether 4G prices drop...
At the moment from what I can gather, EE have the monopoly coverage wise so hopefully when the competition kicks in prices will drop.
Certainly don't want to get tied into a long 4G contract at the moment to find high prices & crap coverage ruins the experience...
I'm currently on 3 with an iPhone 5. Going to stick with them if I get a Nexus 5. 2000 minutes, 5000 3-3 minutes, 5000 texts, Totally Unlimited data with unlimited tethering, and 4G at no extra cost in December, all for just £15 a month
As nellisere says, the best one for me is 3. 4g coming next month (very limited) and is cheap and reliable with excellent HSDPA coverage (left voda on my n4 after 8 months of crap service).
I'd look around

4G isn't in my city yet so I won't be switching until that happens, obviously.
Three is the best for data.
Up to 20mb (10-15mb average) on 3G.
Truly unlimited for £12.90 a month.
And 4G will be free - no charge difference or plan changes.

I think I'm going to leave Orange due to poor network coverage, and move to Three.
Nellisere - think I'll get that same plan that you're already on. is the unlimited tethering available for new customers do you know? I've looked on their website but can't find confirmation about that. Cheers.
Another vote for three from me, get great 3G (15 - 20 Mbps) and when 4G turns up it won't cost me any extra. Totally unlimited data as well, I recently used nearly a gigabyte while on holiday in Italy at no extra cost due to their "Feel At Home" deal.
Three is awesome

My dad is on Vodafone and barely gets any decent signal on his S4 and all so I can't expect any better. 02 simplicity has been awesome for me. Only capped once. I'm waiting to see what they do then 3 week brings completion. I was using the n4 before never really bothered much before.
Seems like 3 is the one to watch but is EE coverage that good. Cors its definitely too pricey for me.

Does anyone know if, when 3 changes to LTE in December, will the change in frequency improve penetration into buildings? I had heard somewhere that this would be the case but not really found any info (not looked properly yet to be honest!) Just got my n5 today (a beast!) And want to take advantage of LTE when it arrives, as well as Google music... can't really do so just now as it uses so much data.
Tried a 3 sim but not much use in my flat as the signal is non existent... on virgin "unlimited" but capped after 3.5GB, would love the option to have truly unlimited, LTE would be a bonus ..
Edit: sorry for changing the subject a wee bit - I use approx 2-3gb per month, but that's with me being careful... don't use the phone that much for Google music, but would deff use it more if I had unlimited!

I will probably stay on Tesco network for 4G (but only upgrade when they have 4G in my city) for only £2.50 extra. Three is tempting but who knows when they will have 4G in my area - I can't imagine Plymouth is anywhere near their top priority list. Plus, I must keep my phone number and it'd be quite a hassle to switch networks while keeping same number. Then again, unlimited data would be great. I don't use 3G that much at the moment as WiFi is faster but that would change with 4G so I would appreciate unlimited data then! I may switch but I don't expect there will be 4G on any network in Plymouth for at least another year anyways.

I'm also with Three but I have to disagree with their 3G and HSDPA being lightning fast. There have been numerous occasions where I have had no signal in Central London! Also, at home (I live in London also), I get a speed of 5-6Mbps on my iPhone 5.
That said, I'm hoping their signals and speed improve. I certainly can't complain for unlimited data and tethering for £15.

Tethering free only on The One plan. Ie £15pm 12month contract, or £18pm on 30 day rolling. I'm on the former and have no complaints with 3.

I was once a happy T-Mobile customer for 24 months until September when I moved to giffgaff on the £10 goodybag. Wherever I was, I always seemed to have signal with T-Mobile, usually 3G or HSDPA most of the time.
Along with the great signal, my T-Mobile deal was simply brilliant: 600 minutes, 500 texts, Unlimited Internet and a free phone (a Wildfire S) for just £11 a month! It seemed however that T-Mobile did not care much for my custom as in the 25th month (after the 24 month offer) the price doubled to £22! I then quickly grabbed a PAC Code (surprisingly very easy) and switched to giffgaff.
However, since my Nexus 5 purchase, I'm looking for a 4G deal and Three is calling to me with it's '4G at no extra cost' promise. Can anyone on Three vouch for it's signal strength, stability and speed?

No. As it's unlikely that we live, work and visit same areas as you. You have 7 days to cancel though. I've been all around London, Cambridge, Oxford and few other places and the only place that wasn't too good was Cambridge. Now and again you get a bad spot, but it's so small that it looks like a local issue with a mast rather than poor coverage.
Sent from N4 ?
Arturnip it depends on location so where do you live? Personally I live in Plymouth and everywhere I go apart from forde valley and manedon main road I have excellent signal, it is more reliable than Orange/t-mobile/virgin from my personal experience (cant comment on O2 but family on vodafone and it seems terrible) and much faster for instance at my place of work I get 20mb/s with <90ms ping on Three but on T-mobile I got 8mb(same as Virgin) and on Orange I got 2mb with high ping, glad I left Orange as it was one of the worst and the most expensive! Currently paying £8.50 a month for one plan at Three due to some deals added together (12 month contract) so very happy as its cheap as chips, extremely fast and can only get better with FREE (or close to it...) 4g! Shame its arriving sometime next year and not now .
I'm happy enough with Three's DC-HSDPA speeds
Switch to Three! There 3G speeds are nuts I get around 15Mbit DL and 5Mbit UL. They are rolling out 4G over the next year or so and will not be charging extra for it, meaning if you have a 3G unlimited data plan you will still have unlimited data with 4G.
Three are the only UK provider that will offer unlimited 4G with no extra cost, madness when you compare what EE are offering.
I'm happy with three.
Also on the one plan unlimited internet and tethering for £15 a month is a steal! (Includes 4G when available also).
All depends on there coverage in the places you visit most and people can't tell you on here. Grab a sim (even PAYG) and try it. Can always cancel.
Here is my speeds and I don't exactly live in a high populated area. (Nottinghamshire)

I wonder if the phone was using WiFi and LTE together because the WiFi here is slow.

I unfortunately agree with you .... To be honest it seems that the fancier and better our smartphones have gotten, the worse my AT&T reception has gotten. I complained regularly about my M8 and I'm not sure that the S6 might not be worse.
I helped my M8 by forcing 3 or even 2G where it seems the towers are better or the radio is better for non LTE ??? Not sure if we can force 3G with the s6

I have noticed it too. It happened to my note 4 after the latest update. All of a sudden I was getting weak 4g signal when I used to get lte. Then I noticed the update had changed my apn from "phone" to "next gen phone" or something like that. The "next gen phone apn" is the same as comes stock on our s6. When I manually input the old apn I find my signal gets better again on both devices. Maybe it's my imagination but I think it's worth trying.
When I was using my nexus 6 at home id get either 3 bars or none, very odd. But with this I get 2 or 3 consistently, never none so I'd say mine is much better
On LTE in the NYC area signal us better than my S5.
Yep I too am having an issue. I'm in Apex, NC. My previous phone was a HTC One X+. In my house, I had almost a full LTE signal with my X+. Now with my S6 I only get one to two bars in my house with no LTE. Even outside....
I'm reading online that all carriers are having issues with the S6.
Bars aren't always the perfect indicator of actual strength, especially across different devices. How about doing a speed test?

In terms of signal strength my signal is -113 dBm in and outside my house. Everytime I get a call now my calls drop or are static. My HTC One X+ never did that. People are asking me what kind of phone I have and telling me my new one sounds like crap.

Strangely, I'm having the dropped calls intermittently as well. Weirdly enough rebooting the phone helps
Obviously I don't want to have to reboot just to make calls
I've been experiencing signal issues as well.
recently, I noticed there is a spot that is showing up on all my pics. lens glass is clean, so it's definitely on the actual lens itself. Even more strange, around the time I noticed this, my signal quality has dropped off dramatically. I go into my basement, I lose all signal reception (this isn't a 1950's bunker. I've always had reception in my basement - cell towers are nearby).
my wife has an s6 as well, and sitting them side by side outside on my patio, her phone has significantly better signal strength. Guessing I got a lemon. New one is already on it's way.
What type of cases do you all have on these phones? I've read reviews on the aluminum cases or aluminum bumpers cutting the cell signal and GPS signal significantly.
she has a silicone spigen case. I have the spigen slim armor. Neither had aluminum. she had significantly better signal strength on her s6.
I got home last night, at this point tired of the signal issues while waiting for the replacement to arrive. when i looked at my signal, I had 2 bars of 4G. Took out the sim, popped it into my old M8, signal was 4 bars of LTE.

I've had poor signal too. By that I mean -101dbm or worse almost constantly, sometimes I will see -96, but generally its between -100 and -112dbm.
I have been on ATT in the same town for years. I have four other Android phones in my house (galaxy s3, Note 2, Lg G2, and Xperia z3), and they all get better signal strength than the S6.
I couldn't be heard on calls, so I complained to ATT and exchanged the phone. FWIW, I had (and am now on my second) 64gb gold colored s6.
I went through trouble shooting with the ATT tech services people and with the Samsung tech support people, they did all sorts of resets, and I even had me boot the phone into safe mode (from off, hold power button, then release it and hold volume down until it boots up).
I am a long time reader of XDA and am posting now because both ATT and Samsung said they had "no reports" of signal issues with the ATT S6. People with signal problems should post about it to get the word out. From what I have read, the s6 is the first or one of the first phones to feature Samsung's own cellular modem instead of Qualcomm's. Maybe its no good, hopefully its just buggy and things will get updated quick.
I was able to put my phone into Testing Mode by dialing #*#4636#*#* and change try different radio settings. The only one that improved signal was "GSM Only"
Switching to that radio setting made my signal go to -80dbm. But of course, GSM-only means 2g edge data. But for now, I am thinking about switching to it when I need to make a phone call.

Same.....
FWIW i have my s6 (g920I) sitting here with one bar of LTE but under settings/About/status it is showing that my LTE is fluctuating between -109 and -112 db....On my wife's M9 it is showing 3 bars of LTE but under the settings her signal is actually worse than mine at -116 to -119 db....so it seems like the reception is better on the S6 but the bar display may be off...
I just switched from a Nokia Lumia 830 Windows Phone. I had a S4 and S4 Active before that. We just bought a new house, I work from home in a basement office. I had issues with calls dropping and failing to ring. Texts not coming through until I went upstairs, etc. The Lumia seemed slightly better. I've only had the S6 for a few days but I haven't dropped a call yet, and calls connect on the first dial, not third. Both phones show 1 bar of LTE. I was worried the metal would have issues ala iPhone 4. But not only is it more reliable the call quality seems better. I thought HD voice only applied to mobile to mobile, but toll free calls for conference calls sounds noticebly better on the S6 vs the Lumia and S4.
I still think a microcell would be nice, but way too expensive. Any suggestions on finding one cheap? I thought if I complained enough to AT&T with dropped and failed calls to prove the issue they would offer one. Buy 6 months and as many calls later, no luck.

I have exactly same issue, but I'm using S6 Active.
Phone call drops everyday, I already requested a replacement, but I'm afraid it will be the same.
Oh, almost forgot to mention, my wife is using a unlocked T-mobile version S6 on my plan, and her signal is much better than mine.

I live close to a tower. 4 or 5 bars all the time, good sound quality, reliable data connection.
