... OP states it will bootloop. You need to flash twice. You also should get GB bootloaders since it fixes your 3button issue. Get back in download mode. Doubt this will work but try:
Remove battery
Open Odin
connect phone to computer
Press Vol up+VolDown +insert battery
Use ODIN.
If it doesn't make/buy a jig and next time READ more before you flash.
For download mode, I always:
Start ODIN and plug USB into computer
1. pull and replace battery
2. with phone off, hold both volume buttons (if froyo based) or volume down (GB)
3. Plug USB into phone. see download mode
this ahs worked 100% fo the time.
if the battery icon pops up, then it do the other volume button....

Hey PR,
Thanks for the responses, I did read a lot, but did not see it mentioned anywhere that I could lose button functionality, and thus be prevented from getting back into download mode for 2nd flash.
Any ideas where I can buy a jig?
Thanks
The rom doesn't make you loose 3 button, Flashing to a very old JF6 did that. Google layman jig for a how to or google mobiletechvideos.com to buy one.
Just curious, did you try adb reboot download while the phone is booting? It should get to a point where it responds to adb commands. Hell, mine has been stuck on the ATT screen and still responds to adb. Worth a shot.

Since i live in Brazil and here the galay s i9000 version is much different then our captivates and there is any place where i could try to fix my captivate i´ve decided to donate US$ 50,00 for who helps me fix my phone.
Here is exactly what happened:
I was already on cognition 2.3b6 but decided to flash back to stock and flash it again to 2.3b6 since i´ve never flashed back to stock and sincer i installed the firts custom room.
I installed the stock version usin odin 3 ( the files from cognition download threat ) and i didnt disabled lag-fix netheir deleted any folder or anything at all.
The installation to stock was succesful, then i used one click root installed the rom manager and selected the 2.3b6.zip
After rebooting it went to recovery screen as usual.. i selected the reinstall packages options and it reboot again, now it stuck some time on the at&t logo ( never had the voodoo voice ) ...and the rebooted again..
and here is the part where i know i was stupid
this time it entered on clockwork recovery mode then i tryed to backup and mount and it came back again to clockwork recovery mode... then i decided to wipe data and cache... then to format my sd card ( stupiedest point ! )..after i tryed to install packages again and after reboot it stayed like it is now
without the usb cable... if i turn it on it goes to at&t logo screen then it flashes on at&t logo... and then boot on recovery mode.
if i put the battery...plug the usb cable and try to turn it on.. the phone doesnt go to at&t logo.. it just stays on the charging mode.
i already tryed all download modes and none of them worked...
here is the list of things i´ve already ordered from sparkfun if i need to build that JIG thing...
1 - $10.95 - COM-09258 - Resistor Kit - 1/4W
1 - $3.95 - BOB-10031 - USB MicroB Plug Breakout Board
other info:
when i get on the at&t logo or recovery mode odin recognizes the phone as a com 4... so i cant flash it with odin...
and when i try to reboot on download mode using adb i receive an error msg " [1] segmentation fault " when i try to get the SU
any help ?
Can you still get to clockwork recovery?
If you can still get to cwm, download this http://www.ponack.net/designgears/JH7_OTA.zip and copy it to your external sd card, and try to flash it.
For download mode did you try:
1. Start odin
2. Remove battery from phone
3. Plug usb cable into phone
4. Hold down both volume buttons
5. Put battery back in while holding both volume buttons

If it's still on the internal sd card and you can get to recovery, choose the option "reinstall packages" it should do something and then it may kick you back to recovery 2e and then try one more time.

Search for instructions on building a jig. It is a device that forces download mode, you need a spare cable our connector to cut up and some resistors. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841512

if yes i will stay a while without my phone =/
Wait so what happens if you have odin one click open, then unplug usb, pull battery, then put the battery back in and then plug usb in while holding both volume buttons. That's usually the surefire way to get download mode.

No.. the Battery trick should work. If your getting the battery charging while the device is turned off and the USB is plugged in that battery trick should work.
I've horked my phone harder then you have an still managed to get back into download mode.
The trick is remove the sim/sdcard and battery.
Plug in the USB
Then jam the battery back in.
Also.. if it's looping at the ATT logo you might have it up enough to do ADB commands.
See if your computer is recognizing the device. - ADB Devices - If it returns a value then you can just do:
Adb reboot download.
And Odin 1-click as normal to restore it.

I'd try pulling the battery again - it takes a few times to try and get it.
But.. I would try doing the ADB commands and see if you can get it into download that way.

Retore con2.3b6 with Rom Manager, flashed data back, reboot, now stopped at Samsung Recovery Utils mode, Installing Muti-CSC ..., been like this for an hour, be able to use volumn key move up and down, tried clear cache and re-install package, after reboot, goes back to the same screen. Tried to use odin but can't set to download mode anymore, eveytime reboot back to Samsung Recovery Utils.
Thanks for your help.
Possibly try this.
1. Pop the battery out
2. Start Odin on your PC.
3. After 30 seconds, insert battery. Do NOT power on.
4. Hold the volume up and volume down at same time.
5. Still holding the volume buttons, plug into USB. Release once it's in download mode.
Following these steps should force Odin to boot up the phone in download mode. At no point during this should you push the power button at all.

You saved me, flashing to stock now, thanks.
BTW, do you have idea what's cause the problem?
Sorry, wish I knew. I've never had much luck with restores in dg's roms. I'm running Axura RC1 now, and had one successful restore on it.
Hi guys,
Great to hear you sorted out download mode mate.
I have the same problem, and can get into download mode, but Odin stock JF6 just freezes at DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET. It doesn't proceed any further and I have left it as long as 10 minutes.
I have reflashed to stock many times previously and it only takes a second to start flashing.
I'm so worried that my phone is permanently soft bricked... :-(
Any ideas?
Its the lagfix Causing problems.

Sure, but for now the reason why it wouldn't boot in the first place is irrelevant because my problem applies to any soft bricked phone.
Please see here for fix: (post)
Here's how it happened:
I was trying to swap Kernels by following instructions on cognition thread. I flashed the stock kernel and tried to apply the update.zip, and it gave me errors. I tried to reboot and the ATT screen came up and wouldnt boot. I was able to get it into download mode using adb, so I flashed the JI6 kernel. Now it won't go into download or recovery mode (just ATT screen).
Here's what I have tried:
- volume up/down + power buttons. released power button and recovery mode wouldn't come up.
- with power off, pressed volume up/down. Did not enter download mode.
- power + volume up. got a screen saying power reset or unknown upload mode?
- tried just hitting power and letting it sit for a long time to see if it would boot, but it just stays at ATT screen.
- adb reboot download (with device plugged into usb) - said device not found.
Is there something else I can try to get it into recovery or download mode? I figure I can flash the stock PDA if I can get that far. Is there something that a phone repair shop can do (special software, etc.) to help?
Any help would be appreciated.
Jason.
Have you read the READ ME BEFORE FLASHING sticky on the dev forum?
But.. try this:
Turn off your phone.
Take out the SIM, any external SDCard, and Battery
Plug in your USB Cable
Turn on Odin 1 Click - OTA JH7 Back to Stock
Hold down the +/- VOLUME Buttons on the phone.
Pop the battery back in - should go directly into DOWNLOAD mode using this method. If it goes to the gray "Battery Charging" picture.. unplug, take out the battery, and try it again.
And you had USB De-bugging turned on before you were doing all this (I'm guessing yes) Hopefully the above works.
BTW whenever it goes south like this .. better to just go back to stock and try again rather then potentially making it worse
thank you! That got me into download mode. I was able to flash back to stock. I was scared for a while.
Jason.
NP.. next time though read the Q&A sticky - should point you in the right direction a lil' quicker
And if you plan on to keep flashing new ROMs? Def go there first it should point you to different posts to keep you from having this issue in the future.
Help guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I897. Last night I installed the Clockworkmod ROM Manager in there and was messing around with it.
I choose my phone model to be the the I9000 and then I went into recovery mode to restore the previous ROM, but guess what? It went into recovery mode, the volume up and down buttons select the menu items and it asks me to hit the "OK key" to enter.
The Captivate doesn't have an OK key, it uses the power button. So the Android Recovery Mode here thinks the phone is a I9000 and I can't get it to do anything other than reboot into that mode.
I've tried using the ADB to try to get back into download mode but it's no longer reading the phone. The volume + power buttons to go into that mode has never worked for this phone either.
I'm at a loss at what to do. Is there anyway I can get out of recovery mode and into download mode or back to regular phone usage here? Would I need to take it to an android developer?
Thanks for your help.

Shut off the phone, open up odin(DG's flash to stock one) hold the power and the menu button. Once you see the ATT screen release the power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. Once odin recognizes your device flash to stock using the utility. Once this works donate to DG for saving your ass. Also, quit using ROM manager. Just use the update.zip method everyone else uses.
+1 for just using CWM update.zip It is sooo much easier/faster.
Thanks, but it didn't work. My Galaxy S is one of those where the volume + power buttons don't work to get it into download mode.
I did try power + menu as you suggest, but that doesn't work either.
try this
1. open odin.
2. With phone unplugged remove battery
3. with battery removed plug phone into pc via USB
4. with battery still removed simultaneously hold down Vol. + / - (forget about power button just hold down the two vol buttons)
5. While holding down the vol + / - insert the battery (keep the vol buttons down and hopefully DL screen comes up)

I cannot stress this enough.
Also, OP, if the above doesn't work, it might be USB jig time.
pwr isn't used to go into dload mode - that would turn your phone on.
Do this:
Open odin
Remove bat, sim, ext mem card
replace bat
hold vol -/+ and plug in data cable to computer
(should be download mode)
If that fails, then get yourself a jig... gotta search for the thread though - should cost a couple dollars. Then once you're back up... look up the thread to fix the 3 button combo.
You might try turning the phone off then hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER (not vol up/dwn/pwr) to get into download mode. Make sure to remove the sim and sd cards.
I bricked my phone over the weekend and had similar problem you did.the easiest way too get out in to download mode is a jig. Its easy and cheap to do.look on you tube under un brick captivate fort a tutorial.

Once you learn that trick you are on stock for like 2 minutes before you flash
Yeah I'm kind of a lurk but I've been around for about a month just flashing everything, and I had no idea it could be done like this till today. Going to make my next one even faster.

Nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the jig method Wednesday morning. Wish me luck!
I tried the jig and it didn't work.
What happened was that it got me back into recovery mode, not download mode. Tried it several times. So unless I'm hitting the wrong points on the phone usb plugin (other than the last two), I'm hooped.
I tried the direct resistor wire to points in usb plugin method. I didn't try the one where I cut open a mini-usb cable and use the plug as a dongle, although I think it may get the same result.
What do you guys think?
Ok here is what happened.
- I rooted my galaxy note successfully.
- Installed CWM through the steps described in this forum
- Installed Titanium Backup
- Restored CWM 5.0.0.2 APP with data through Titanium backup (which was from a LG Optimus 2X)
- Pressed Restart into Recovery Mode (Note: I did not FLASH the Clockworkmod Recovery, i simply pressed RESTART INTO RECOVERY)
- Phone asked for super user permission, i gave it
- Phone restarts, is stuck in a black screen with the botton 2 buttons lighting up
- Was stuck there for 5 Min so i took out the battery
- Now phone will not power on... with or without wall charger plugged in.
Is my phone bricked? Is there any way to fix it?
Many thanks.
What about download mode? Can u get in?

are you saying you restored from a non note backup image?
take the battery out wait 30 minutes and see if you can get into download mode
Could be probable that your bootloader is replaced, so yeah the chances are that you have soft bricked your phone and yeah there are definitely ways to restore it, so don't worry.
But see if your download mode works. press volume down+home+power all at a time.
i took the battery out for 30 minutes. Put it back in.
tried to activate download mode, there is no response.
normal power on wouldn't work either... sigh

Do you have a usb jig?
no i don't. should i go find one of those phone fixing shops? they usually would have something like this right?
I did some research on the USB Jig, is it sure to put the phone in download mode for a soft brick?
if so, i can just buy one off ebay or something.

Yes... i think you flashed another bootloader which does not support the three button combo. but download mode should still exist. The USB Jig will bring the phone to boot to download mode. It should work... if not, then you have a real bricked note
Try this:
- download and install KIES
- download and install Android SDK
- download and install Odin3
- open CMD (in Windows --> Start and type cmd)
- open Odin3
- remove battery in phone
- connect phone to pc via USB
- reinsert the battery in phone
- type in cmd:
Code:
adb reboot download
- looking for "added" in Odin3 (and Com Port)
- flash a stock rom for the SGN (better 3 parts and with *.pit)
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't work. I guess i'll try the USB Jig tomorrow at a phone fixing place and if that doesn't work i'm not sure what i can do
Can you atleast access recovery mode by pressing volume up, home and power button?
..
I cannot access the recovery/download mode by using those button combo. The phone is totally non-responsive. Screen remains blank and buttons do not light up.
did you ever solve this issue?
so what happened... any update?
