I have a Nexus One running cm7 theme Inexus and I love this phone. Its in great shape and never thought in my mind I would ever consider selling it. Everything about it since I first got it, does everything I want it to do. Now comes into the question. I'm with T-Mobile and been with them since the begining but I feel it's time to say goodbye to them for couple different reasons. Looks like I'm going to go with cincinnati bell and they told me I could use my Nexus One with them that was great news. When I was at the store I picked up the Galaxy S and felt pretty good.
Whats the pros and cons of Nexus One and the Galaxy S. Or even though the Galaxy S felt good not on same level of N1?
Thanks for all that might beable to help me with this question.
Don't know if it matters. I have had a nexus one. Later, on ATT I picked up a captivate. I personally loved the feel of it, but the gps issues and the lack of a camera flash were game breakers to me. However, the power in screen quality almost made up for it. But here I am, sold my captivate and have an att nexus one and still love it.
Well, honestly, I would never move away from the Nexus One for a Galaxy S at this moment in time... yeah, the phone has great features but lacks the build quality of the Nexus One... the "plastic" finish just doesn't cut it... too many surface scratches too easily!!
This is the input I'm looking for, thanks guys keep them coming. I don't want to regret getting rid of my N1 if the time comes. I wish the N1 speaker sounded just a lil bit better when listening to music. But not complaining cause my N1 has been out standing for me. My girl has a comet and the speaker when listening to music sounds like its coming from a high end stereo ha.
If the AT& -T-Mobile deal goes through, would you eventually be without a 3G signal once AT&T scaps the AWS band frequency? Does Cincinatti Bell roam onto TMO's towers?
Not sure good question. Where I live with T-Mobile I'm just outside the 3g coverage. I use wifi at home. 10mins up the road 3 g kicks in.

They haven't been clear yet on how the merge would affect current phones. But one would assume they would only use the EDGE network. Because of the time it would take to finalize the deal they would most likely be able to keep the network intact till the contract ends and either offer replacements or some sort of compensation for rendering the phones useless on their new network.
Has anybody had a galaxy and a nexus one? Do they run bout the same? I know galaxy Dosnt have a flash on camera. Looking for lil more pros and cons.
Trackball, and Trackball wake
I myself have had ample time to play with both devices as my lil bro has a nexus s and i have a nexus one yes the build quality by HTC is better than the Sammy but with 500 dollar phones you had better have a case on that sucker so the plastic feel would be out the widow there. Now the hardware in the Sammy is not that much better than that in the HTC and does not hold enough gains over my nexus to make me get it. And the ultimate deal breaker for me is and it may make me keep this nexus one until im forced to get rid of it and that is the trackball alerts. There is no way that I would be able to live without my trackball notifications and trackball wake. Just my 2 cents

My younger brother uses the SGS and when comparing the two.. I hate the feeling of the galaxy. Not too comfortable in my hand and the plastic feeling ughh (But its great with the otterbox commuter case) Comparing the two when playing some games (I don't play so I could really care less), sgs definitely runs it faster but no camera flash is terrible. I can't live without the flash, (I almost use the camera everyday! Even in the hospital!) the torch app is so useful too. Some hardware on sgs is better, but it's missing some stuff the nexus has. It's a tough decision between the two. I hope that putting the things in brackets sort of show that it really depends on how you're going to use your phone.
Since I have the nexus and the sgs isn't a major upgrade, I'm just gonna wait it out.
If I had to choose between the two, I would go for the nexus. (To be honest, I wouldn't go for either at the rate phones are coming out right now! Just hold on to your current for a bit more!)

+1 and +1! I always have my eye on the trackball for notifications. I guess I'm gonna have to get used to this soon though Reminds me if games like goldeneye back then.. damn that game. I dunno if it's just me but b/c of it, I play all fps games with the controller settings inverted! Can't get used to that, dunno how I'll get used to no ball!!
Everybody has been very helpful. Thank you very much. Now I need lil more help on different matter lol.
My girl got the Hauwei 8100 and I just rooted it but now I want to put a stable cyanmod on it. But I have no clue what to do or where to go or what to get. I know my N1 but I have no clue bout her new phone. Can I get some help or links or step by step . (A easy way to do it ha)
Having both, the galaxy s has an amazing screen, amazing! N1 feels. Better in hand. They both run just as fast once rommed.

I keeped the N1. I just love this phone. My girl brought back the huawei phone sucked and got the blaze. She loves it. Just need to root it and rom it ha.
I am leaving Verizon for various reasons. I have made a shortlist of phones Im looking into. Anyone want to put their 2 cents in?
Sprint:
Evo 4G - Grandfather that can still kick some ass
Evo Shift 4 - Heard the k/b is kind of mushy
T-Mobile:
G2 - Like keyboard, have used before
HD2 - Very awesome modding community
ATT:
Atrix - Looks nice, non-laggy
---
There you go!
PS, i'm in Chicago, and it is raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock.
The "awesome modding community" means a lot to me personally. I've been really impressed with the ROMs, Apps, etc. for my Incredible... I feel that it's been a big part of keeping my "perceived" value very high. I still have no nagging feeling that I need to upgrade and I've had it for over a year.
Ok here's my opinion for each carrier you mentioned
Sprint: get the evo shift because of the 2nd Gen snapdragon, I have a hd2 and both hd2 and evo have the same 1st Gen snapdragon processor and its laggy compared to the competition
T-Mobile: g2, same reason as stated above or you know go for the g2x but if your addicted to flashing like 99.9% of xda than consider the awesome hd2
Att: atrix lags alot trust me, I had a captivate and I tried out a atrix...yeeeeaaaah didn't go so well for the atrix
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I'd go by carrier first and foremost. If Sprint, and you're considering the Evo / Shift - then the size of the screen must not be that big of a deal, nor the keyboard angle. If not, why not the Nexus S? If GPU quality is of import, and you don't need a keyboard , I'd suggest the Nexus S. Immediate updates and better chipset.
Sprint would get my vote, obvious bias aside, because of the truly unlimited data. WiMax is meh so far, not taking into account future updates to the network. Not to mention if you even get coverage where you are.
Carrier and coverage is the most important thing to consider I would think. Edit: and I missed that Chicago bit at the end. I spend some time in the city and am located outside the city and I can say Sprint coverage is definitely nice. A big market, especially for WiMax. That said, frequency and building penetration is something to take into account with 4G. Should that even be a selling point. I have an Evo and it definitely has had some great developer support, but it is an old dog. No ifs ands or buts. Also Sprint is supposed to get the GS2, an Atrixq like device as well as - assuming as much - the Nexus '3.' If you can wait you might be better off. If not, I'd say the NS.

Another vote for the Nexus S. HOWEVER, do your research first. I'm hearing reports that there are issues with the Nexus S 4G radio. People are complaining about it not working right or not working at all. That said, this IS XDA and stuff like that doesn't stop the devs here
Sent from my NS running NSCollab cuz I lost my tin cans and string....
Yes, very true. I haven't been keeping up with all the news, but I get the impression this is something that could be fixed by an update ... as opposed to, for example, faulty radios. I have been under the impression that it isn't a widespread issue, either.
But, of course, research and look into your options.
I figure many of us are facing the same dilemma here...
Like many of you, the Captivate was my first Android phone. Being an AT&T customer, it was my (our) only choice back in the summer of 2010 and I (we) jumped on it and, besides some ocassional frustrations, haven't looked back since (other than "GPS-Gate", I've (we've) been extremely happy with the "Cappy").
In March I'll (we'll) be eligible for an upgrade with AT&T and I'm (we're) starting to wrestle with the question of what to do next...
Should I (we) stay loyal to AT&T and see what phones they have available/will soon be availble? The SGSII (Skyrocket) looks good, but there's bound to be something new available in a couple of months.
Or, should I (we) jump ship to another carrier (Verizon, T-Mo, Sprint) and have an even better selection of phones to choose from?
So, do any of you have any suggestions or advice? What are you going to do when your contract is up with AT&T? Is Verizon, T-Mobile, or "insert-carrier-name-here" a better carrier to be with (pricing, selection, service, coverage, etc.) than AT&T? Anyone have any experience with the other carriers you could share? Or, is it best to sit tight until after February and see what new phones are on the horizon (SGSIII, something else)???
Ultimately, the plan is to do something within the next 3 to 6 months...just not sure what the right move would be.
I (we) thank you for your comments/thoughts/advice/other!
I keep hoping for the Galaxy Nexus, but its not looking too promising. Of whats coming out as of now what I like the best, and what I find the most intriguing is the Sony Xperia Ion. 1.6 dual-core, 12MP camera, 4.7 inch "Bravia HD" LED backlit LCD. Build quality is supposedly worlds ahead of current Xperias. Its the new phone to usher in a new era of "Sony" phones, no more "sony ericsson". Oh and its playstation certified too, and this will blow your mind, a DEDICATED CAMERA BUTTON! I really don't get how manufacturers are so forgetful to include this one useful button.
Hope that helps. there is one downside to this phone however. Its running gingerbread. I was really hoping to see some newer ICS phones with no buttons at CES, but sadly they were all gingerbread. I don't get this really. Its like if HP released a whole line of laptops with Vista on them! Honestly we all know now after 2 years don't buy an android phone with an outdated version of the OS that promises an "upgrade" because you'll be waiting a while, in fact by the time you get your update, it'll be outdated itsself. Me personally I know next I'd like to get a phone I can leave stock and be happy with it, so I'd prefer to have something with ICS pre-installed on it. But as for the Xperia Ion, its still a bit before its released from my understanding, and the one they had at CES was pre-production and actually had ericsson branding on it, so maybe they'll update it before it launches.
I'm looking at that galaxy note personally. Its rumored to be released on Feb 18 here in the states, I'm probably going to wait for mobile congress convention that happens late in Feb because quite a few new phones should be released.
As for carriers I think they are all pretty much the same. Sprint won't have unlimited once they go lte so it will be just like att and Verizon and such

LOL no offense but I gotta ask it, why does anyone want such a gigantic phone that won't fit comfortably in your pocket?
SGS III FTW.... Wait for that!
MWC 2012 is near, wait for it. I won't go 2year contract this time.
As for me, if a phone has Mms, Phone and GPS, it's enough. But the GPS of Captivate in china is not promising. It can only be accurate to 10m in China. So i also wanna change a phone in several months. My first Android phone is Milestone. Its GPS is excellent. So i may choose Motorola. But as we all know, the screen is worse. It's not cool. I also feel puzzled.
Well being 6'4 makes the note not that big and it will fit just fine in any pants that I wear.

I have the exact same problem but even worse, I am eligible right now! I have to stay on AT&T because it is what my company uses. My cappy is actually running really nice right now on Saurom KK4 so I can hold on if I must. A couple people at work have the Skyrocket and it is nice but I am very hesitant to get a Touchwiz phone on AT&T again as the update delays are ridiculous. I also have a Xoom which is a GED and nice to have vanilla ICS already. I would love a Nexus but don't see that out will ever come to this carrier. At this point I am waiting to see what the Skyrocket HD looks like. I can't wait for the GS3 because even if it will be announced soon we all know how long it will take to come here. I work with someone with an imported Note and it is really nice but a little too big considering I also have a tablet. I just don't get exited about any other phones but I really want a new gadget. Quite the dilemma...

Waiting for Lumia 900. I've been converted and promised my kids the Captivate so I don't have to buy them an ipod.
After getting somewhat burned by the Captivate, is anyone hesitant to get another Samsung phone? Also, if you're waiting for the SGS3, are you concerned at all about getting it right after launch without letting it get "tested" in the marketplace first? I mean, we know what it felt like to be early-adopters with the Captivate and having the accompanying headaches that came as a result... Not sure I'm in a hurry to be in that position again (actually, I just got the Asus Transformer Prime and I'm now having a new set of GPS issues)...
Also, I suppose we'll have to just wait and see, but has anyone heard rumors of any Samsung-killers being announced next month?

My contract is up in March as well. SGS2 is nice, but when I get it, it'll already be several months old so I'm going to try looking forward and perhaps waiting. We'll see when March comes around. I've been happy with my Captivate but I'd really like a phone where GPS worked and something I'd be happy with just root and not have to resort to other ROMs to be satisfied with.

I don't know which ROM he's referring to specifically, but I'm on TeamHacksung's ICS (Build 15). The GPS locks on sooo quickly and is fairly accurate to boot. It's definitely breathed new life into my Cap and it'll make it easier to wait until March for a new phone.
As for the OP's question, I will say that I'm not sure, but these seem to be my options so far:
Galaxy Note: It's nice spec-wise, but I'm going to have to play with it in person to see if I can handle a 5.3" phone. No phallic jokes please
Galaxy Nexus: I know we don't have a release date, but there is always the (expensive) option of buying the international version. After getting burned by Samsung/AT&T's incredibly delayed updates, I'm finding I really want a stock Google experience, especially with ICS out now. There are always the amazing devs to turn to, but it can be a frustrating experience sometimes.
ASUS PadFone: A phone that also plugs into a tablet form factor? YES, please! Unfortunately, no release date or carrier announcement, but I would jump on this in a second.
SGS 2 or Skyrocket: While these are "old" tech, they're still really nice dual core phones. I think the jump from single to dual will be a lot more noticeable than dual to quad in terms of experience. Plus they should be even cheaper by the time I upgrade and the dev support (for the SGS2, at least) is awesome.
Jump to another carrier: unfortunately, AT&T gives the best company discount for me, so jumping carriers isn't really an option, but you never know.
Other phone: I'll probably end up researching other phones, but I've been partial to Samsung just because they do make great phones. But I won't rule out something amazing coming from Sony/HTC/Asus in the next few months.
So in short, I have no idea!
After a year and a half with the original cappy, I've moved on to the Captivate Glide because I like physical keyboards. I am considering the Note depending on what I hear when its released, but I also plan to wait for the SGS III before making a decision on my next phone.
I have one of the first build Cappy's and I've LOVED every min of owning it. I know the time is coming soon for me too. I'll be staying with AT&T, I've been really happy with the service here in Seattle. There are 3 devices that have my eye. The Sony Ion, The SGSIII, and the Nexus Prime. All of which have some amazing specs.
In my opinion, Samsung had some issues with the GPS, and, (IMHO) had some bad timing on the software releases. Honestly that didn't really affect me much, I ran custom ROM's from the moment they were released, and regardless of which device I choose, I'll do the same with it. I've run Froyo/GB and now ICS as soon as the dev's did their magic. And will ALWAYS do the same whichever device I choose. Actually, I just might choose a device the stands to get amazing dev response just for the longevity

I personally think the Galaxy Note would be heavenly . I don't use my cappy as a phone but more as a pmp (personal media player) and think a 5" pmp would be heaven.

I think it's safe to say the community for the T-mobile Note is just about as empty as a legacy device from the old days. I don't really see much other then the Jedi Leader ICS and CM10 nightlies so i'm guessing people that aren't jumping up to the Note2 are sticking with some they consider stable.
So What are you running?
I'm running ParanoidAndroid 2.51. One of these days i need to sit down and learn how to properly build from source so I can keep myself somewhat amused.
I've been running liquid smooth rc9 for the past week and its been running nicely. I used paranoid also and really liked it, just not a big fan of the dual panel menu.
I've been messing around trying to learn to develop from source. I've been working on a kernel, but have been getting some errors when I go to compile. I haven't been able to figured out what I'm doing wrong yet.

can someone check my assumption here: I need T-mo WIFI calling app to work with no issues - I'm dependent on it.
I am assuming that an AT&T version [unlocked] is a no-go, 'cause at&t really wants to defeat wifi so it will not have the app.
correct?
i'm 0 for 2 on unlocked at&t phone attempts with T-mo .... its enough of a challenge just finding ANY phone, including those T-mo pushes, that will handle wifi calling app smoothly.
luckily i have had several that do so
I just switched from Jedi 4 to Liquid Smooth rc 9. No complaints so far. Enjoying the liquid splasher options. I did take Gnote from the Paranoid rom and install it on this one though as I couldn't find an Snote substitute that I liked anywhere else.
Hi OP! I have an att note that I got by reupping my son's line- he hates smartphones and just recently started using a keyboard phone for easier texting- he's 26. I have had this phone for a year, didn't use it for the 1st 4 months since tmobile didn't work so well till the blaze modem was set up for this phone.
I tried the stock t-mo rom when it was available after tmobile released their note. Didn't work so well- had heat issues. So have been running ptmr3's padawan for i717 with blaze modem- on the monthly 4g plan for 6 months or so. Love that!
2 days ago I tried the tmo roms again. Stock still problematic, but tried ptmr3's Jedi4 with the new mixed modem of tmo and n7005. It's working really well with great data speeds- 10-14 mbps DL, and 1-3 mbps UL. Battery seems to be doing well and no heat issues with this modem.
I would love to get the note 2, but can't justify the $$ and no way do I want a contract with anybody. So, here I am with my note that I still love, and I flip back and forth between my GNex for a smaller phone when needed.
For the person who wants to flash the att roms, I read yesterday that all roms between the att and tmo notes are interchangeable with no flash problems.
I did it with Jedi 4 with no other prep. I wiped padawan rom and data, flashed Jedi, and then started testing modems after it settled in. So far, so good. There are still Note lovers here
I just upgraded to the note from my sgs4g. Currently I am running PA but I like to switch between that and CM 10. Don't be surprised if this phone gets a sudden push of users since Tmobile is offering it as a cheep upgrade phone, also Samsung's in general are safer to root and load custom roms on. Even though this is not a popular phone, it is gaining in ownership. ALSO I like how you can load all the 717(att note) roms if you want.

to me its a great device. I may start a Bloatware guide thread...it could help some. I would hope all of you pitch in.
hate to sound ignorant, but which is "PA" ?
for now I am sticking with leaning down the stocker, and looking out for a Jellybean push from samsung.
mine is pretty fast as it is with about half a dozen or more uninstallations of stock bloat. i have plenty of memory space.
I got to the Note 1 via Nexus 7. make sense? I was using a LG and, like you, SGS4G which we still have [need to REALLY skinny that one down], so I get the n7. after rooting and playing around with various mods and configs, I was thinking: I'd like to have this 720p but integrated with the handset since I can't figure out where the big tablet fits in with my habits... plus I wanted sd storage, wifi calling, etc. so the logical answer: Note! reading the specs, I don't see that the very hot-selling Note 2 [with apparently auto-cracking screens...] is worth nearly double what I paid for my note 1.
Pa is paranoid android.

Well Shane is correct it does stand for Paranoid Android. I agree that this phone is a bargain now. It us one of the few phones you can get for less then $400 with out an upgrade. Granted I used my upgrade. I used the upgrade, because the old galaxy s 4g was two years old she needs a new battery. It was time to pass her down to my son. So down graded her from JB (it wasn't quite stable yet) to ICS and gave her to the boy. I was able to catch this at Costco for $50 (with an upgrade) So I jumped on it.

I do the $30 monthly with t-mobile and rely on wifi calling a lot since my home office is in a dead zone. switching to the "unlimited" data plan [100min talk...i'm not a big talker] in a couple days - got the $30 window on that. [btw... the data allowance on the 30 talk-oriented monthly is very small, but I'm not sure they can calibrate it right via wifi because I have used data heavily but never come close to running over, and a lot of times when I spot-check it the meter shows Zero]
this is a good handset. keep it lean and its as fast as any non-gaming person can use.
and I see far fewer screen breakage reports on this one [knock on wood]. there are a lot of busted note 2's on ebay hunting a buyer.
I am fresh off my 2 year and am riding out the service till summer when new phones will be out. I am on an Optimus one at the moment and Really want to get something new. Off Contract of course. Would you suggest the S2 or would a G2X be good enough for the next 6ish months?
Any other devices considered as well.
I realize this may be in the wrong section, sorry if it is.
GS2 all the way. If you can get the O2X P990 over the G2X, then that's a good choice too, but the GS2 is still better.
The G2X is going to be stuck on Gingerbread until someone figures out how to get the cell radio working in CM10 (currently it's been ported from the P990 CM10 and everything works except the phone part, lol). The O2X has official CM10 support but it is still not quite as stable as most would like. The GS2 on the other hand got official ICS and JB updates and has great support from CM10 and AOKP.
sgs2 is better, do not get a g2x, get an optimus 2x.

wait, Isn't the osx and g2x pretty much the same phone, just different branding? I honestly don't know if ICS of Jelly Bean has anything I NEED. I just want it to be stable, have the market so I can download apps, games. Stuff like NFC is cool and all, but the chance of me using it is real slim. I think I am still an Iphone man. It's just simple, everything works ya know. things come out for it first and there isn't many issues. Idk Maybe if I got a higher end android I wouldn't mind it much. but My optimus t burned me on google os.
Also I'm on T-mobile in the states. if that makes the difference

No, there are differences besides the branding between the O2X and the G2X. The G2X was designed to run on T-Mobiles networks, so the 3G bands it works on are different than that of the O2X.
I think the SGS2 is better than both at this point though.
alrighty. I was pretty set on that anyway, but thought I would see what some fellow xdaers thought. Any idea where else I could look for a GS2? I tried Swappa, Glyde, Ebay and Craigslist. any others I could browse? trying to stay around and possibly under $230

ebay and kijiji are the only sources I'm familiar with.
The GS2 is massively popular so despite its age it's going to be expensive even used.
If you say you're more of an iPhone type of guy, I guess the G2X will fit your needs if you don't plan to flash custom ROMs.
As for ICS/JB - it's more than just NFC, it's a hardware-accelerated interface that makes scrolling silky smooth compared to GB, as well as general refinements in the UI such as the pull down notifications for SMS and the really nice lockscreen (the CM10 one at least). The hardware acceleration is the biggest deal here though.
Additionally, if you aren't the custom ROM type of guy and want simplicity, I'd suggest taking a look at Windows Phone - it's closer to iOS than to Android in that it's relatively locked down and there's hardware consistency across all handsets, but it's still considerably more flexible than iOS, i.e. you can (easily) get your media off the phone after you put it on!
Im not talk why and why, so my decision would be a SGSII... thank you xD

sgs2 with absolutely no doubt mate. the only thing id be thinking about is the s-amoled display (i kinda have a thing for lcds), but since ull be using it for less than a year i see little chance of getting any ghost effects on the display (which doesnt happen to everyone anyway). ive seen a sgs2 running ics (not even jb which is right around the corner) and i was blown away.

absolutely right. women being smarter n more practical would obviously go for a trouble free device. men, being ehhmm men, would go for the o2x so they can spend 100's of hours to fix all bugs, modify roms/kernels, overclock and then happily show off to their friends a phone that runs (almost) as it should in the 1st place

Oh I flash a lot on my Optimus1 but I'm tired of it. Regardless of what android devices I get, I'll flash something to get rid of any bloat and give myself root access to do link2sd. I can't get the O2X cause I am on T-mobile so it would be the G2X I guess. I just want to get the phone and play with it now.
I know all about Windows OS. I would but some of the games/apps I like to use arent on it yet. If apps came out within a small time period on iOS, Windows and Android, then i would consider it more but not just yet. Only thing really drawing me to windows is the awesome camera on the Nokia 920, I think.
Guess I'll try to hunt a SGS2 on craigslist or Ebay for now.Just real tired of this 600Mhz phone with 180mb for apps. LAME!
If you are willing to save a little more, I'd suggest looking at either the Galaxy Nexus (used) or the Nexus 4 (new, $300). Both are pentaband phones so they support T-Mobile and most major GSM carriers. And they are pure Android, no carrier apps or stupid skins, so if all you want to do is get rid of bloat, it's really unnecessary to flash custom ROMs onto those models. In fact, the reason I got interested in CyanogenMod at first (back in 2011 with a HTC Desire Z) was that I really wanted a Nexus experience, and all the extra customization features were just a bonus.

Yes sir, I looked for the Galaxy Nexus and it's about the same price. and the N4, well its sold out now and probably will be next time, by the time I did buy one and it shipped, I'd get my phone in June. Pff nah. I'll try to keep looking for the s2 or an older nexus. Do you think it's stupid to resign? I want to keep myself off contract so I can go where ever in the later part of the year, be it ATT or Something else. I'm so confused
I don't know a lot of phones that support AWS 1700, but one provider in my country has a fairly healthy listing:
http://shop.windmobile.ca/ProductCatalog/Handsets/
(ignore the prices there, they're bound to be inflated over what you can get stateside or on ebay - dock off at least $200 as an initial estimate).
That might introduce you to some more options, hope it helps.
Go with s2. You get more development there.

thanks guys. This can be deleted now. I'm in the forum general now
Leave the G2X where it is. No support.
I'd rather go a cheap and by a O2X, it's really supported by the community and it's a lot of fun
I must say GS2 its better dude,. Not a fanboys..

What do you think about the Sensation 4g? I can get it for under 200 unlike the GS2 which is upwards of 250 and higher.
