You have probably seen this thread about how to install CWM recovery and found out that it doesn't work for you. The good news is there is a fix
1. Download the 2 zip files in the post linked above to get the recovery and root files.
2. Unzip the PH11IMG.zip and copy the recovery.img to where you put the fastboot program as part of unlocking the bootloader in HTCDev. Make sure you do not put PH11IMG.zip onto the SD card as you will be stuck in a bootloop.
3. Turn off your phone, pop the battery out for a few secs, turn back on while holding vol down and wait while it checks for a update file.
4. Select fastboot, plug it into your computer and wait for Fastboot USB to appear on the screen.
5. Open a command prompt and go to the folder with fastboot in it (As you have to do this to unlock the bootloader with HTCDev I assume you don't need me to explain this bit) and type
Code:
Fastboot devices
if you get something back like
Code:
HT16MTW02057 fastboot
then your good to go
6. Now type
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
and hold your breath as it writes the image....
Code:
sending 'recovery' (3858 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.799s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 1.188s]
finished. total time: 1.986s
Unplug your phone, pop the battery out again for a few secs, turn back on with vol down held and select recovery.
7. wait about 10 secs for it to load.
8. Victory dance!
You can now flash any custom ROM you like, or just root with the root.zip file you downloaded before.
EDIT: It seems that the recovery image above has some problems with SD-EXT partitions (probably sensitive to the SD card, so yours may be fine), so if you were thinking of moving your data partition to your SD card then please use CWM 5.0.2.6 from this thread.
Thanks mate. Have been having problems with this the past week.
Wow!!! this is working for me. for you guys who can't get xtc-clip, unlock bootloader using htcdev, follow this step for recovery and then voila.... start rooting proses here

going to HTCDev won't give you s-off, that i can tell you, thats only given by the XTC Clip. by doing this yes you probably do void the warrenrty..but honestly..who cares lol
Mate you are great.
I bought the Salsa for my wife and was going nuts to constantly hear about low memory issues. Hope now I will be able to do something about it.

Actually going to HTCDev does give you S-off, as long as your patient and follow the (long winded) guide you will end up with a patched unlocked bootloader.
How XTC clip seem to be able to do it properly but HTC (assuming the devs have access to the source code) have to do an awful hacky attempt is a whole different subject......

Save yourself a lot of problems and get CWM 5.0.2.6 from the bottom of my first thread.
And back up everything. I can't remember at what point but I suddenly ended up with a wiped phone (Like a just did a factory reset) so this is not just a precaution, you will probably end up putting everything back on.
The minute u have s-off, u have problems. Htcdev allows you to install cwm 5, if your like me and a couple of others we cant upgrade...trust me....I was the second user on the salsa forum to get s-off, and test roms, so I do know this, and so far I've flashed thus unit 42 times with 5 test roms and 3 custom roms trying to progress further for all of us lol. So while u got s-on with unlocked bootloader....stay there and don't go any further. Get cwm 5, but please stop posting about it....so many threads over the same thing me and kanded started.
Its not a moan, but getting fed up of saying the same things over and over.
When we get a working rom....we will share it.
Share info, don't spam it to many times please
Oh and flashing a new rom, installing new cwm, basically anything done to your rom will wipe it all.
Use titanium backup root, to save your apps + data.

Ok, I went to flash a new recovery image on my phone. (recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2-blue.img). following the prompts here; http:hero-roms.blogspot.com/p/amon-ra-recovery-image.html#uds-search-results[/url]
My phone is now in a bootloop. I cannot access the new flashed recovery or the old one (obviously). The only menu I can get is the original recovery screen. HELP! I need to get my phone back up and running soon, or I will have to take it into sprint.
The only other Idea is to somehow create an issue on the phone so that when i take it in (Im within the 30day purchase policy) so that they cannot tell i rooted and flashed ROMs on the phone. Id like to avoid this!
HELP!
I have searched the forums for other solutions already, and I cant help but wonder if i have made it worse.
Edit: If at all possible, I need someone experienced to help walk me through. PLEASE!! I need to get my phone up and running ASAP. Its my bday (Hell of a day to be doing this)

Funny?
Im not sure what you mean. Format the phones memory or the sd card? The sd card has already been formatted (one of the mothods of attempted recovery that was tried and ultimately failed) so now I no longer have the partitioned drive that i did when the phone was working. I dont think thats any issue though, as the problem is in the phones memory, not the SD Card.
Here is what the phone says in the boot screen i get;
HERC XC
HBOOT-1.41.0000 (HERO20000)
MICROP-0110
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-1.04.01.09.21

Okay I don't know how to flash a recovery except when the rom is running so what you'll need to do is a manual install follow these steps below (credit to zelfie and my search button) :
unplug your phone from your computer and turn it off before you do this
First download the ruu installer.exe
run the ruu installer.exe
open up taskmanager and go to processess
in processess you'll see "ARUWizard.exe" click on it and open file location
scroll through the temp file till you see rom.zip and copy it to your desktop
end the ruu.exe
now rename the rom.zip to HERCIMG.zip
place that on the root of your sdcard (on your sdcard but not in any folders)
Now turn your phone off (if not already)
put the sdcard back in and press volume up and the power button
when it comes back on press the volume down button
it will prompt you to push the action button (the trackball)
give it some time and it will do what needs to be done then start the process of getting root all over again. Don't use the page you mentioned before use this one.
Since I'm teaching you stuff I noticed that you don't know how to use the insert link button. Copy the link your gonna use then when you post a reply you'll notice a little globe with a chainlink, click on that and paste the link in there. Your not the only one who's done it lately otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it

Got it to update. I think Im still stuck in a bootloop though. HELP!! Its been pulling up the Sprint Logo and the HTC screen, but its stuck there!!
Is my phone totally bricked now? I installed "battery icon mod", cost about 1USD, and now it just keeps on "reflashing" the text "quietlly brilliant", and making that typical sound... I have S-OFF and root on my phone.
My question is, can it be restored somehow? I've tried to run through bootloader and do a factory reset, but that didn't help at all.
Also, is there a way to put a new rom on sdcard and flash it from bootloader, if so, how? I'm a bit newbie, and could use a step for step guide.
If nothing workes, I'll toss it out the window and never ever again buy a new phone stuck with a monthly payment for the next 1½ - 2 years
have you install clockworkmod recovery?
If yes:
0. make sure you have >50% battery
1. download any custom rom
2. go to bootloader and choose recovery
3. install from zip and find the directory of your rom
4. let it flash
Since your phone is bootlooing ... enter the recovery and open the mounts and storage menu assuming you have clockwork mod or 4ext installed ... from here u can mount usb storage to your pc ... i think this is what you want ...
But if you have stock recovery and system ... just run an ruu ...

This guide may or may not be outdated since i am no longer maintaining it! Sorry for that!
I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD
Except the guide itself...
The windows version is under review, sorry guys! But the linux one still is up
*Thanks to everyone who made this possible, GREAT WORK!!!*
First things first, you need to S-OFF your phone and in human terms that means remove the big bad boulder thats stopping you from installing what you want on your phone.
Prepare the computer
1. Go here here and download it for windows ( in this guide i will use the windows version ). and extract it.
2. Install HTC-Sync from here
3. Remove HTC-sync WHAT!? yeah you only needed the drivers but you have to install HTC-sync for that.
4. reboot your computer
Prepare the phone
1.Go to settings/applications/development and make sure USB Debugging is ON
2.Turn on Airplane mode ( you don't need anyone calling you during the process anyway... )
3.Download this and put it on your SD-card ( not in any folder ). This is the recovery Clockworkmod for Incredible S taken from here
S-OFF'ing YAY!
1. Connect your phone to the computer with your USB-cable
2. Start alpharevx.exe that you downloaded before
3. Go to here again
4. Press download again, the file itself is not important just the form.
5. Fill in your information, you will see the serial you must fill in in the alpharevx.exe you launched before. And the hboot version is also visible in the program ( look for 1.09 or 1.13 the one it says is the one you got )
6. Submit the form and you should get a nice long serial-key, copy paste or write it into the alpharevx program and press enter!
7. Wait a while ( atleast 15 min ) if it dosen't seem to work see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130346 for more information
8. You should now have S-OFF!!
Recovery
1. If i remember correctly the phone starts automagically in h-boot and it should automagically install the recovery you downloaded earlier otherwise just start your phone in h-boot ( hold volume-down and press power ) and it will do it automagically.
2. Start up your phone, connect the phone to your computer and remove the recovery file from your SD-CARD
3. Reboot your phone in h-boot again, scroll with volume up and down and choose recovery with the power and now you are in recovery. Neat huh
If this way to get recovery dosen't work try this

2. Make sure the file is named "PG32IMG.zip" without quotes.
3. Put file in your SD card
4. Switch off phone
5. Pull out the battery and wait 5 seconds. Put the battery back in again. (This step is needed in case fast boot is enabled..)
6. Press vol down+power. HBoot (white screen with 3 android logos at the bottom) should load.
7. Wait a while.. it should pick up on your PG32IMG.zip automatically and install your custom recovery
8. Reboot into your OS and remove the zip
9. Go back into HBoot and then recovery. Use as you please (I suggest you take a backup first then proceed to flashing or doing anything else you might fancy )

I'm not an expert but I'd really have to say no (assuming by simlock you mean locking your phone to your carrier).
This method gives you s-off so you can get root.. there after, you can do what you please on the software side.
For unlocking your phone from your carrier, you need an unlock code (afaik).
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.
Small correction suggestion

My post speaks about the technique for the IncS. Anything else, I've not tried on. The reason for this method is that AlphaRevX doesn't work on all ROMs (like the Indian/Asian GB update for the IncS). So my post talks about moving to the Optus/Virgin RUU ROM to get your phone AlphaRevXed

You should go into HBOOT and check because if it is S-OFF, you will need to know which version of HBOOT you have in order to download and generate the appropriate AlphaRevX key.

Yes, if you device is already S-OFF then you just need to flash a custom recovery and then you can flash a rooted ROM or you can add root your current ROM.

I followed the steps on this site droidviews com /2013/ root-htc-one-m7-and-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-it to root my phone. but I get no on-screen instructions and your HTC One will be rooted in a few moments. it goes to the white screen saying this is for devs and then turns off after a few secs. the bootloader screen now says tampered and unlocked at the top but I am not rooted.

Don't think you have done anything wrong. It's perfectly normal the bootloader screen shows "Tampered Unlock", otherwise you may not be able to get into recovery mode.
need to be more specific though. Have you flashed the recovery using fastboot? erase cache after flashing recovery may be helpful.
pay attention to the top of the booting screen see if there's a line says entering recovery
having the bootloader unlocked is not the same thing as rooting the phone.

I know I can get into cwm touch I have that but thats all I have. I was reading the site he linked and it says I have to get cwm to flash either supersu or super user. I guess the thing I tried didnt put that in. I just want to be rooted so I can use usb thethering for free if I ever need to use it on my laptop. I thought I was smart enough to handle this but once I started I realize maybe I didnt do enough research and I don't want to break my phone.

I guess the thing I tried didnt put that in. I just want to be rooted so I can use usb thethering for free if I ever need to use it on my laptop. I thought I was smart enough to handle this but once I started I realize maybe I didnt do enough research and I don't want to break my phone.

Easiest way is to flash TWRP here is a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173870 or here is a ALL IN TOOLKIT http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183942 once you have team win recovery go to it and reboot it will ask you if you want to root.

We all have to learn somewhere. All you need to do is flash Team Win Recovery it should be the very last one in the list of recoveries. Do the touch version. Then reboot your phone into recovery once you are in Team win recovery select reset the recovery will then ask if you want to root. There are many other ways but I think this is about as easy as it gets.

First of all - Please format your posts into paragraphs. People don't like reading a wall of text and will probably make it less likely for you to receive help.
(Im going to assume you haven't made a Nandroid backup and made a safe copy)
I'm new to Android a couple of months so there will be people on here with more experience than me who might be able to help you with an easier/quicker method, but this is what I would do:-
Download the latest Android Revolution HD (a Sense-based ROM that is the same as stock but better - read about it), other Sense-based ROMs are available but I like ARHD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183023
Rename it to something like arhd.zip
Use the All-in-one-toolkit to side-load the ROM to your phone. It will begin to install automatically. Use the volume/power keys to install - it makes it less likely for the installer to crash.
There would be no need to root as ARHD comes already rooted.
You could also look/ask around for a Nandroid backup of your device/carrier and adb side-load to your phone but that would be more work for you. This would put your phone back to stock like new again. The best guide I've seen on here for people new to flashing, backups, etc. is here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618
**Tampered** happens I think when you flash a custom recovery. S-ON is normal - don't worry about it.
Good Luck. Hope I've helped...
If I've made any mistakes here, someone please correct me...

To be honest mate I can't totally remember, I've only used it once and it's been a few weeks since I messed my phone up and had to use the toolkit sideload to fix it. I'm on a Mac at the moment so can't even check. It wasn't too hard to figure out though!
The toolkit (by hasoon) you already have is the toolkit I'm talking about. Sideload is just installing the ROM from somewhere else when it's not stored on your phone. (i.e. on your PC).
The installer (if you get that far) is called 'Aroma' and quite buggy when using the touchscreen so just use the volume keys to move around the options and the power button to select them.
Ty lol, Im currently using volume and power button to moving in the bootloader, it a brand new phone and im panic lol. Ill try all of that tomorrow

I was too, but if you can reach the recovery screen then it will be ok and there will be a way of fixing it somehow.

Like I said, I can't remember 100%, but its in the toolkit under 'Extras' -> 'Sideload a ROM' or something similar. It might even guide you through the steps. There's probably guides and videos online somewhere. Just call your zip file something simple to help reduce the chance of error.
Not sure I understand what you're saying... If you press recovery, you're taken to the recovery screen?

the tool work from fastboot mode in bootloader. so you must be in bootloader to use it but the toolkit has options that will boot the phone into bootloader

Tried what before? When you press 'fastboot' on the device nothing major happens on the phone - it's waiting for commands from your PC.
Edit - Too late, what he said ^^
It keep saying in cmd that device not found

Try to push it to your device without the toolkit. Read this site
http://m.androidcentral.com/android-201-10-basic-terminal-commands-you-should-know
Use adb push command to send the ROM to your phone while in fastboot mode. Once it's on your phone, just go into recovery and install it from zip.
Place the 'android-tools' folder you download from that site directly onto your c:/ drive, not on your desktop etc. It just makes it easier.

Forgot to say - put the arhd.zip ROM into that folder also.
Try to go into recovery first to see what folders you have, if any. I had a folder called '0' when I messed up so my command would have been
adb push arhd.zip /sdcard/0
