Having been using the texasice ics rom since the early alphas, I have now come across a problem with my microphone.
the sound is barely audible, and what is audible is a crackly hiss with some words hidden in it.
Is this the same problem others have had with this rom? I heard it may be something to do with apps2sd, but I'm not using it.
Upon installing the latest rom, (p6) my voice is apparently audible in phone calls, but muffled, yet a recording app still gives me the crackly sound.
I suppose my real question is, is it a problem with the rom, or has my phone finally decided to move on to a better place?
try to do a full wipe and then flash the latest texasice p6 to see if it solves the problem
Thanks,
wiping then flashing didn't help, so I'm going to assume it's a hardware failure. The phone has been abused a bit, so I'm not surprised.
I'll just use it for a dev device from now on
Mircophone hole
If you haven't already, you should make sure the microphone hole at the bottom of the phone is not plugged up... just a suggestion...
ICS 2.1e6 has been working fine for me so far....
i think it is rom--well known issue
do as suggested and wipe all including system
if p6 has issues try medroid v5

Hello All,
I searched first by the way :-/
Recently my Nexus has had its earpiece too loud for both Incoming and Outgoing Calls.
At first I thought it had something to do with the radio, so I downgraded. It actually worked on the first call but after that it was loud as heck even on the lowest volume.
I tried to retrace my steps with my applications next, but nothing that would point to the earpiece. The last apps installed updated where mostly games like Fruit Ninja and Aliens vs. Humans, so I think we can rule out that.
The specs in my sig should be up to date.
The only variable that has changed other than the ones listed above is the fact that I recently bought a Jawbone Icon Bluetooth Headset. But to my memory, this issue began before that.
Can't find a solution anywhere cause it seems most people have an issue with the phone being too soft lol.
I'm really looking for some help guys. I'm just short of wiping the phone clean and reinstalling CM6 and my apps. If that dosen't work I'll have to use the warranty I guess. Had the phone from about Sept 10 I believe.
Let me know if I missed anything guys. All ideas are welcomed to fix this issue.
It's probably because of CM. CM uses a audio boost kernel by default, so I'm guessing that's the problem. Try installing no audio boost kernel to see if it solves the issue.
yeah if you are using cyanogen ROM, they added an audio boost hack long ago. on cyan 5.0.8 the audio boost was so loud that over 50% volume started to distort the speaker and kill your ears. so in later releases they split the difference and lowered it somewhat.
but the boost has always been there. the only likely possibility is that you recently started enabling DSP settings like compression or the EQ, which would suddenly now make things way louder.
Wow thanks guys. Had no clue that CM had an audio boosted kernel. Guess I'll be flashing something else for the while. Something as close to vanilla I guess.
Oh, I also checked the DSP settings, everything was off but was worth a shot.
Thanks again for the replies!
Just to let anyone with the same issue know, I found away around it. I installed one of Wildmonks kernels without the audio fix.
Kernel 2.6.35.10 to be exact. I get to keep my cyan features and have a decent volume ear piece too. Yay!
Good work. It's funny cause most people complain this phone is too quiet. If only they see this post!
So I have been trying many of the latest Gingerbread roms as I had been with Froyo and Eclair. Recently, I went from Cog5v1 over to a CM7/MIUI rom and noticed that the headphone icon was always in the notification bar and I had no sound from the speakers. The internal speaker seemed to work properly, as I could hear ringtones, notifications, volume rocker, etc...but no system sounds, music and such. Also, when I receive a call, i cannot hear anything until i hit the spekerphone button and then the speaker works. Additionally, while on MIUI, I switched kernals and the problem inverted, meaning the speaker worked as it should but I had no headphone response at all. Since this problem occurred, I have flashed back to stock, master cleared, flashed froyo, flashed stock GB, and many others always flashing to stock in between. Now with every rom I flash I have the constant "headphone on" problem. Others have suggested hardware, but the speaker does work (speakerphone and when I change kernals and invert the problem), so im thinking it is more likely software, firmware, or bootloader related.
Has anyone experienced something like this before or could suggest something to try to fix the problem? I use headphones for music and audiobooks everyday, but if the phone cannot handle regular phonecalls, its pretty much useless to me.
First, Bootloaders and firmware ARE software listing them separately is just redundant.
just because the speaker works does not mean it's not hardware related. Sounds like an issue in the headphone jack. Try and spray it out with some air duster perhaps?

Hello guys, I have recently purchased HTC one, and flashed Cyanogenmod 10.1 and teamseven AOSP kernel on it. I noticed there is issue with microphone during calls. Distand end cannot hear me or it sounds extremely low/muffled, but when I put it on speaker phone, issue goes away. Also after few min it sometimes randomly decides to work. I have tried to flash Android Revolution 22.1 (4.3) to see if the issue will go away, but it is still persisting. I would appreciate any help I can get, thank you
Just a quick update, I did more research on this issue and it seems like a common issue with newer HTC One models. Noise Cancellation seems to be the problem, since talking to the phone at certain angle seems to might the issue go away. I even tried restoring my phone to the stock, and even tried the disable noise cancellation fix that is around in the forums, but it did not make the issue go away completely. This is my second HTC One in 3 days, first one had a nasty dead pixel, and now microphone issue. I will take it back to AT&T store and get it replaced again. I'm not sure what is going on with the quality of the phone on newer models, since I've had the Developer's Edition and AT&T model on launch day and both were perfectly fine. Is anyone here having the same issue and found a fix for it?
Another quick update, I seem to have fixed the issue by SCREAMING into the bottom microphone hole during call for a minute to see if I can fix the volume, and it might be hard to believe but issue has gone away. I read this in another thread about the microphone issue, someone posted by screaming into the hole, you are adjusting the volume gain and fixing the issue. I recommend trying it if you are having the same problem, since I've literally tried everything else and this fixed it for me.
I have similar issue. For more I noticed random disconnections during call.
it worked !!!
It worked....

your speaker works where you can hear the call but if you talk into it the person on the other end cannot hear you.
It has been broken in AOSP for quite some time now. CM 10.2 STABLE has the same issue.
The only working rom with speakerphone is GPE/sense based ones.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I have been using Atrix HD MB886 -unlocked- in India for nearly an year now
But Since CM11 M7 build - i have been facing wierd battery drain and problems with Audio(earpiece, speaker and headset)
I then flashed factory image
MB886_att-user-4.1.1-9.8.0Q-97_MB886
and also got updated to
98.4.20.MB886.ATT.en.US (latest OTA)
But the audio problem is still there
Ever since, the speaker sound and all the system sounds, including ringtones, call volume, etc go off by themselves randomly, so I can't hear anything when the phone rings, If by chance I pick up a call while in this state, I can't hear a word the person on the other side utters, but that person does hear me clearly.
Restarting the phone, the sound works perfectly, until for some unknown reason it goes off, and I have to repeat the whole process.
Reading through forums on the web, some people who have had the same problems report improvements and some very few even report having obtained solution to this persisting issue after installing the app "SoundAbout" from google play store. But no use for me.
I have tried nearly all ROMS for Atrix by now - but no relief.
Any fixes., ????!!!!!
im having the exact same problem with my atrix. Tried multiple roms incuding flashing back to stock. I assumed it was a hardware issue but restarting the phone fixes it. Iv also noticed sometimes the sound comes back by itself after a while, even without a reboot. I played songs with the audio muted for a continuous 8hrs and the sound was fine all the while. Anyone else have the same issue or possible reasons what might be causing this..???
HW problem
Hi, this is most likely a hardware issue.
I had same problem sometimes. When I hit the phone, at the top (not furiously), it started working again.
Most likely loose connection with speaker terminals.
you can open it and pull the speaker connectors.
Suddenly my Microphone not working in call. People at the other end can't hear me at all (both normal or in speaker phone). However if I use wired headset or Bluetooth headset in call the everything is fine.It was working fine (I was at CF Rom sutl44 with exposed) then it suddenly stop working since a week ago.
My phone is Verizon Droid Turbo XT1254 bootloader unlocked with sunshine.
At first I thought that maybe my mic is dead but it is not. The voice recorder app (Hi-Q MP3 recorder) can still record from the mics without problem.
I read a lot of this issue and mostly because of software problem, so I tried all that I can think of.
I have reset my phone, even do a full wipe and start clean install but the problem still same.
I flash full stock odexed firmware (sutl44 or 49) with same result.
I flashed resurrection remix rom (the latest) still same problem.
I changed build prop as per some people suggest but still same problem.
From the hardware side, I disassembled my phone and clean mic holes, check mics condition, all seems fine. When I tried using the voice recorder it can register any sound or even touch so the mics are working and sensitive.
FYI, this phone has 5 mics, I checked and tested (with voice recording) them when I disassembled the phone. All are working fine.
I'm really desperate right now.. I love this phone and this is my main phone. I will appreciate any help or suggestions.
Maybe some ROM recommendation that may fix the mics problem.
I just flashed RR Marshmallow to see if I get any luck but unfortunately no.. mic still not working in call.
I tried to remember when this problem start to happen.. I guess it was after I install GravityBox in Xposed and start played around with the GB settings.
I have TWRP backup before I install that GB, I tried to restore the backup but still mic not working in call.
Did Xposed can change something very basic (like a 'driver' in windows) that can't be changed back by re-flash or load a TWRP backup?
Because somehow I think that this 'driver' or 'library' for mic in call is bad or gone.
Please.. any suggestion?
This might be a long shot, but I just had the same issue. After making a call using Google Hangouts, it started working again for me.

I have tried that since I mic is not working.. still problem
tertiary
Remove your tertiary microphone. It is the lower right when looking at the back. After this you must ground your audio output pin or you will get buzzing sound during recordings and conversation. This pin will be lower left out of the four where microphone was removed, there will be a chevron shape beside it which is a convenient ground location. This problem as far as I can tell happened after a security update from Verizon. I realize this sounds like a bogus fix but it made my phone work GREAT. This microphone is picking up your voice as well as the main mic and causing noise reduction to the point of no audio.

Since it's a software based issue, flashing a ROM different from stock firmware wouldn't fix it? He said he tried flashing Resurrection Remix.
BHB27 kernel's problem
I don't read your post carefully, so I don't know if your ROM and kernel is same to me, but I have similar problem in last few days. Finally, I find the problem is the custom kernel, the lastest BHB27 kernel, when I flash the old version custom kernel, the problem is solved. I hope this information can help you.
My ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/development/rom-mpg24-107-70-2-brazilian-6-0-1-t3426234
Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-maxx/development/kernel-bhb27-kernel-t3207526
The new kernels have problem, so I flash back to BHB27-Kernel-V201-8-M.zip
i was able to solve the issue by plugging in a headset and then unplugging it. sometimes some dirt/junk get stuck in there, and the phone thinks that it is plugged in, thus muting audio out except through the jack.
I have the same problem, you fixed this problem in your phone?
I try RR (Android L, M and N), CRDROID (Android N) and NX (Android M). In all of this ROMs, I have the same problem.

can you give more details about the problem that you faced?
After nougat update in Moto M mic not working.
I was not ready to do a factory reset. But there is no other option to fix mic issue after nougat update.
So, last night kept back up of all important folder and run factory reset without automatic restore.
Now, everything looks fine to me. Incoming and outgoing calls are working fine.
So, I am suggesting everyone to do a factory reset, this is one and only option to fix mic issue.
Thanks,
Saurav Sinha
