President Obama has taken a stance against SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), a bill that would allow the justice department to force Internet providers and search engines to block all sites accused of copyright infringement.
For now, it appears that President Obama has stalled the controversial legislation. Read the details according to Forbes.com:
“The growing anti-SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) support that has swept through the gaming and Internet community found a very big ally today. With websites like Reddit and Wikipedia and gaming organizations like Major League Gaming prepared for a blackout on January 18th – the same day that the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HR 3261was scheduled in Washington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has stepped in and said he would not support the bill.
SOPA has been delayed, for now. The House has agreed to revisit the issue next month, but they now know the White House will veto any bill that’s not more narrowly focused.
Much to the chagrin of Hollywood, the Entertainment Software Association (which has been a backer of the bill from early on), and Internet domain company GoDaddy.com (which lost many accounts as a result of its support for the bill); SOPA has been shelved. The Motion Picture Association of America, one of the bill’s largest sponsors, is expected to regroup.”
Go Obama!!!

the first good thing Obama has done..to bad it wasn't because he doesn't support bill but the fact that people are disgusted and are protesting. if Washington thinks that we cannot overcome this...wow are they in for the fight of their lives...
you saw one day of half ass protest..
id like to see a day of devoted protest and there would be a change..
don't rent or goto a movie, don't purchase one company's stuff, boycott till they're on our side once again..
people once gave these powers...and we as one can take these powers away.
but we have to come together united....
sounds like a political stunt to me..
he quietly sign a part of ndaa where he can detain anyone in USA without anything.. he sent more troops to war instead of bringing them back..why the hell would he care about internet freedom? coincidentally election is this year..

Actually the White House has been against this bill probably before you even heard of it. Alot of money has been invested in internet security by the government. I don't know how IT inclined you are, but the reality is this bill would put the government back to square one as far as internet security goes because it threatens DNS. So no, it wasn't "one day of a half ass protest" that caused the white house to take your side.

As much as it pains me i agree somewhat myself. Obama may be a puppet and social figure. Its amazing how many people don't even know about the NDAA. Now we have the Sopa and pipa getting all this publicity but no one is aware of the Enemy expatriation act that is presented as well, which invokes the right for Congress to strip us citizens from their rights making it easier for the president /military to indefinitely detain someone that "arbitrarily" has ties to terrorists.

Because rather than win back market share by improving their product, they've chosen to stiffle competition by using lawyers.
My question would be "how could you have any respect for apple in the first place?" considering what an awful company they are and how badly they treat their customers (as a company, not as customer facing staff).
In 1994 Steve Jobs closed down all philanthropic activities at apple to save money. Now they have "more money than the US gov" those activities still haven't been restarted.
People slate Bill Gates and microsoft, but they forget the Gates foundation gives more money to help aids victims in the developing world than the rest of the world combined.

Yup. He might be a pr1ck when it comes to business, but he pr1cks around well.
Steve Jobs used his money and resources to save his own life, and only AFTER experiencing the hell that was cancer did he even have the inkling to give a little to the community.
Gates, for all the evil that he started in Micro$oft, is planning to give away HALF of his worth. He's pushing for education and technology that will change the world, and I am almost ready to forgive him, and then somebody pointed out Windows Vista.

I am opposed to patent lawsuits due to it being a far too lax, broad, and generally bs system in the US as it concerns technology patents. But Apple deserves every lawsuit filed against. I have had something against Apple ever since they decided to make their company a cult of personality around Steve Jobs and Apple. They want to play holier than thou in court? Then they should put up with the other side rolling up their sleeves and fighting back.
Complaining about anticompetitiveness. PAH. They just forced Samsung to stop selling Galaxy Tabs entirely in Europe through bs patent fighting. Apple deserves every single case filed against it.

Mega-Indictment
It doesn't look like the service will back anytime soon, so folks may want to consider utilizing other services for uploads, etc.
Good Luck..
Addendum:
Deleted the reference to SOPA/PIPA in my subject heading because this action has nothing to do with those laws. SOPA/PIPA are designed to implement measures so that "suspected" "piracy" sites can have their DNS entries blocked from US internet users which will frustrate efforts to access those sites, and to take away revenue by stopping credit card companies from doing business with them. IOW these are laws targeting the so-called "end users".
This action against Megaupload was a straight up site takedown and arrest of the founders, which was obviously coordinated with multiple law enforcement agencies from multiple countries. (At least the US and New Zealand were involved). This was action targeting the so-called "suppliers".
Having said that, if you're a US voter you should make sure you let your US Congress representatives know how you feel about SOPA/PIPA. Even if phase one of the web protests are over for now.
Horrible day for humanity....

Edited OP.
Megaupload should be taken down
and this is a good example that the current laws in the book are good enough if they just enforce them. There is no need for SOPA/PIPA.
Megauploads business model asks for money to see others copyrighted content.
Torrent sites on the other hand dont make any money and are much more complicated legally yet those got taken down before Megaupload. Megaupload should of been the first.
And so began the WAR...
MU business model is unethical. As so many, many copy cats out there such as filesonic, 4shared. It's only matter of time before they get taken down. Megaupload is just an example.

Either you're ignorant or your just stupid. MU did not promote copyright material at all, it took down anything that was flagged as infringing. Many many people use MU, doctors sharing cancer cures. Scientists sharing data, teachers sharing work for data, the list goes on. They only charges for premium access which only gave you unlimited download speeds and no limits. With or without you could download copyright material.

The Motion Picture Association of America, one of the bill’s largest sponsors, is expected to regroup.”
I foresee prohibition-style shakedowns and takedowns. This issue is going to explode as the two sides engage in strikes and counterstrikes, but I do hope cooler heads prevail.
All respect to other opinions voiced here, but megaupload facilitated a great deal of sketchy shenanigans and did not appear to police its site effectively enough. Of course, a task like that is gargantuan.
I wonder, though, if the g-men will also shut down YouTube and arrest its principals as well? I suspect there is more pirated intellectual property there than on most of the rest of the internet combined. What would make YouTube exempt, and would such an exemption be fair?
"Soup" or no soup, the coming months will prove historic in the life of the internet, an internet that will be forced to grow up beyond the walled garden of its adolescence and thence to play by the rules of the rest of society. You heard it here, folks: The age of internet innocence is over, and sopa/pipa are just early, clumsy practice shots as the media industry and legislators gauge public opinion before launching a more calculated assault.
This is why the retaliatory actions of Anonymous and others cause me great concern. I think they will turn public sentiment against the internet community, paint all opponents of sopa and pipa and similar bad legislation as wildeyed bandits, and thus embolden the powers that be to insist on draconian measures that will force the internet to mature too quickly, severely undermining its usefulness in the process.
http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugge...-criminalize-internet-trolling-184547052.html
Arizona marches to the beat of its own drummer. But if that drummer gets upset and starts hollering on the Internet, he might get tossed in the clink.
After spending years targeting illegal aliens, the Grand Canyon State is turning its sights on obnoxious Internet users (commonly called 'trolls'). A new update to the state's telecommunications harassment bill could make the practice of harassing people online illegal.
Arizona House Bill 2549 has already passed both of the state's legislative bodies and is currently sitting on the desk of Governor Jan Brewer. While there's a lot in there that doesn't concern trolling, here's the line that has people worried:
It is unlawful for any person, with intent to terrify, intimidate, threaten, harass, annoy or offend, to use ANY ELECTRONIC OR DIGITAL DEVICE and use any obscene, lewd or profane language or suggest any lewd or lascivious act, or threaten to inflict physical harm to the person or property of any person.
Violators could be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor and face up to 6 months in jail. If electronic devices are used to stalk someone, the charges then become a Class 3 felony, with penalties ranging from a minimum sentence of two and a half years in jail for non-dangerous offenders with no prior record to 25 years.
At the heart of the bill is an anti-bullying agenda. Cyber-bullying has been on the rise in recent years and has been in the news lately. A 2010 report in The New York Times found that one of out five middle-school students said they had been victims of cyberbullying.
Despite its good intentions, the Arizona law is already being called "overly broad" by critics. By using vague terms like "annoy" and "offend," it could easily encompass Internet forums or even comments like the ones found at the end of this story.
Free speech groups say they don't believe the law would ever stand up to court scrutiny if Gov. Brewer does, in fact, sign it. And many have pointed out the flaws in the bill to the governor herself.
"Government may criminalize speech that rises to the level of harassment and many states have laws that do so, but this legislation takes a law meant to address irritating phone calls and applies it to communication on web sites, blogs, listserves and other Internet communication," Media Coalition wrote in a letter last week.
So tell me guys what do you think about this? I for one do not live in Arizona so it does not affect me but still its alittle stupid.. we can't have fun anywhere can we?

LMAO. I do not necessarily condone nor support copyright infringement. I do, however, do not support copyright trolls. Copyright trolls are basically law firms strong-arming "alledged" infringers by extorting payments from them in exchange for NOT filing a lawsuit. They get a name from an ISP and then start the extortion process. they have no idea who the actual infringer is.
This not only goes on today, but also goes way back to directv hacking days when directv was extorting settlements out of people that purchased legal products online. "Infringers" had the choice of paying a couple of grand to settle the suit or fight it costing them upwards of $10k for legal services.
Well this is going on today with copyrights and the RIAA and MPAA.
