Hi.
I'd like to know how to do a full, total and complete restore to a certain firmware.
Firmwares that you can flash with ODIN come in various flavours, most distinguished are firmwares that do not do a factory reset, and others that do.
Furthermore, flashing some firmware by no means does a full restore.
It seemes not to change the CSC code currently set.
Finally I suspect it also may leave other data intact, including for intsance the camara firmware (i know from the galaxy s2 there was a tool that upgraded the camera firmware to fix something).
I want to do a COMLETE reset in which i can be absolutely sure that the state of the phone is identical to that when it shipped.
I ask this because my autofocus does not work anymore, and I see a possibility of this being a software issue. I'm also not alone in this issue, see the thread named "Bad Camera autofocus on Note..".
I already tried restoring to a firmware in which I know I managed to get proper photos, but after reverting to that one photos are still blurry.
I also got a CWM recovery backup from the same firmware on which the camera worked, but installing that one did not fix the problem either.
Can anyone help?
This forum should help you

You want to be sure and flash via odin you use on your desktop. This will wipe everything clean and put a factory firmware on the device.
I know this thread.
I actually did a restore from a rom linked there.
However it does not explain the intricacies of installing a rom, like how CSC code settings work, how complete an installation of a rom is and how it affects the firmware of the camera..
I'm asking about details here, not the general basics on how to flash a rom.

Hello
I want to try a few different roms/ firmwares/ versions of os etc (whatever we want to call them). But I want to be able to reset my phone back to how it was out of the box. Is this possible. Some of the things I have looked at that interest me are roms that change the partitions to ext4. If I do this can I get back to stock?
I have searched for ages if any can point me at a post that tells me that would be great. One thing to note though, I guarantee that this is detailed in one of the rom postings but after looking at two that had over 12000 post on it I thought that was needle in a haystack.
Thanks guys.
P.S. If I can be pointed or can easily do it I am happy to write a how to. Presuming it isn't there already.
You need a backup of your original ROM that can be flashed back via ODIN .
I used Kies registry Patcher to download and save latest firmware .

So, I'm guessing that, that means normal odin flash with the correct firmware? And I have seen them in the firmware sticky. All the files Phone, CSC, PDA are grouped into one tar file. Does that make any difference?

Do I take it that the lack of response is cause this is to hard/ not known. Or is it because its just a stupid question. Either as an answer would be great. It will let me know which way to point my searches and re-searches.

You would need to re-flash your firmware (as instructed above the Kies registry patcher is a good way to do this) + after your flash go into the recovery menu and do a reset (I believe the option in the menu is called "Wipe data/factory reset"). Maybe you can also do the reset from the settings menu in Android but I cannot confirm this.
I also format my internal and external sd-card before I star to make sure nothing is left behind but I consider myself more paranoia than others
The stock rom is minus the add on from your network so is not the official firmware you received with your phone .You would have to save a copy of that . I did with latest update using Kies as posted .
Saved rom is just flashed complete as PDA with ODIN .

So, thinking that I am worrying over nothing then.
Looked here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S
(Under modifications)
Gives everything and more. The bit I am worried about is if I change the format to ext4 and install a new kernel, will the stock flash remove all of these mods. Would be really great full if a simple yes would be posted by someone who has done it.
Thanks

Hi Guys! I have a Galaxy S1 (I-9000). I've used a custom ICS rom until yesterday, but it was slow, and drained my battery very quick. So I XXJW4 (as far as I know this is the latest official release with value pack), but there are wierd issues (very quick battery draining, wifi disconnecting, doesn't remember my mobile network settings, sluggish browser, etc).
I did the usual stuff like cleaning cache/dalvik/factory reset. Usually I like hacking around with theese things, but now I just want to use my phone, so I would like to restore it to a "very" official state. I'm not sure about the technical details, but afaik some of the update packages are not completely reinstall everything. So what is the correct way to clean my phone so it would look like a brand new one like it has never been modded?
I think I need to repartition. Even if I don't want to change the file systems I would prefer to have a fresh start so no previous data could remain. After that I would need a firmware that contains everything (kernel, bootloader (?), modem, dbdata, factory file system, etc etc) I've already found a lot of roms out there, but I'm not certain witch one will do the job. After I installed the value pack update I realized that dbdata was not part of that package, and I had to find one after googling for a while. So I'd really appreciate some pointers
So that's my story, to sum up the question is how to restore a galaxy s to an older version my making sure everything is completely wiped, overwriten, reinstalled, etc.
Thanks in advance.
go to sammobile dot com webpage and search what firmware you need and download. Flash this rom with odin.
Use Odin to flash the.rom that you like
why dun try ICS infinitum by bhu1...amazing,,...
It is not true. In the past i flashed with odin and it did not even remove all of the apps i had installed with 2.2 ...

Okay, let us be more specific:
- format /sdcard
- format /system
- wide data/factory reset
- flash with odin
Nothing and I mean nothing will be left on your phone. That process formats everything you need to in order to wipe your phone.
Good luck!

Value pack made my phone weird to.
just download some original Rom and flash via odin that will work
Hi, used this site for a long time as a guest for info and registered as I have an odd problem I have been unable to resolve. A quick sequence of events. exact problem in bold
Phone updated to JB no problems in 2013.
Rooted using a file from Phil3759 (or something like that) no problems. Used it for about 6 months or so
All Super user installed etc etc, no issues with phone at all.
9 January. Not sure if I deleted something I shouldn't have and the contacts app continuously said "contacts list is updating please wait" nothing came of this.
The phone was running really slow so i thought i would do a factory reset anyhow. All proceeded without issue. Same problem persisted.
I did a "full unroot is SuperSU" or waterer the app is called and the problem still persists with the addition that the software updates no longer work AND it now says my phone is modified where it did not previously.
Fair enough, it is modified after all.
So now, every time I open either the Contacts app or the Phone app the device crashes completely and needs to reset. Everything else on the phone works fine, including the ability to download and install apps from the play store. Has anyone got any ideas how to fix it?
so far I have an essentially virgin device and i have not set up any accounts on it whatsoever, I have also no installed apps other than what the factory reset leaves you with. I also untucked all the sync options previously and tried clearing cache from the google apps i could identify
Am at a bit of a loose end. I can use contacts+ but would rather not.
Since you have root, the rom is now laggy and crashes, it is time to install a new rom. Back up your efs, contact and messages and important data, then go with a new rom. Titanim backup, super back up and hcktool are useful tool from gplay.

you are blowing my mind there. What is an EFS? I have everything i need to back up, backed up. I already had Titanium but to be honest it wasn't worth a crap, it didn't even restore my contacts (which could be because there is a different problem) but as it failed me the only time i ever needed it, i was not impressed.
it did restore a lot of other things mind you, so it could be sour grapes!
i have a phil file, thats how I rooted it, or am i missing something?
this is my status at the moment
Android V. 4,1.2
baseband n7000xxlso
kernel 3.0.31-1103517
build jzo54.n7000xxlsz
I have a file called philz-cwm6-xxlt9-ora-5.08.5-signed.zip which is what i used to root. But the contacts issue and update issues still persist. On the phone app, as soon as any number is pressed it crashes to the point where the phone turns off now. everything else works perfectly well though.
Apologies if i have misunderstood what you are suggesting I do.
There are few issues here if you still want to fix rom rather than install new one.
The PhilZ kernel you use is different from the rom version. That could cause some issues. You should choose the correct PhilZ kernel from his thread in ori dev. About contact and phone app you can download a similar custom rom extract them and replace original.using root explorer. So this also sound complicated. Honestly you should try to learn how to install a custom rom for note. Not that difficult.

Efs partition contain info about emei so should back up just in case. Hcktool can do it ceey easily. It can also flash kernel from android system.

OK, will try a customer ROM, if it doesn't work i may go stock, i don't really need any advanced features tbh. My only query left then is my kernel which doesn't seem right. the kernel is listed as 3.0.31-1103517 [email protected] 162#3 SMP PREEMPT TUE JUN 4 20:55:52 KST 2013
that doesn't seem like the normal format. Im on 4.1.2 BB n7000XXLSO build JZO54K.N7000XXLSZ
any ideas? i have CWM installed and can get to it so as it stands I believe i only need to download the rom to an external SD and boot to recovery to flash? sound right? Not sure about that kernel though
The kernel you used is lt9 while rom is lsz. It still work but may also cause problem. So better use correct version for rom. Anyway, if you decide to install new rom you can try Sweet rom 10.5 black. It is fast and stable. Other 4.1 custom rom also good. Android thread. They are all there.

Does anybody know where I can find a CWM/TW-flashable stock ROM? The USB port on my I8190XXAMA2 phone is messed up, and I want to send it in for warranty repair. I currently have CM11 on it, and need to get back to stock, but can't Odin, due to damaged USB port.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Here &/or here.
Thanks, but both of those seem to be based on stock, but significantly modified. Meaning, I couldn't send my phone back to Samsung for warranty repair as if I'd never replaced the original ROM (which is my goal here). Unless I'm mistaken.

Even if a "pure stock" cwm/twrp flashable firmware doesn't exist it's still possible to create one extracting the partitions images from the PDA, I'm not an expert in making edify scripts, maybe someone can help you for this.
PS: Remember that to have warranty back you need to reset the flash counter with triangle away and flash stock recovery (not included in stock PDAs)
Thanks! I've never looked into converting a stock ROM to a flashable zip. I'll see how involved that is. Tho I suspect if it were easy, somebody would have already done it
Thanks for the tip about Triangle Away. I've already bought it (and used it on my original GS3).
Whats the difference between older version and ANA2 firmware?

That's exactly what I am wondering. Should I update to ANA2?
Currently on AMA2
Still waiting for the answer
uhm off topic?
however...who knows?I don't think there's a public changelog.
I dubt you will see any difference upgrading btw.

Back to topic...
To make the zip...if you have little practice with scripts/partitons/command line it's not hard, it just take some time to research what you need.
First of all you have to extract the files from the PDA, for each file you have to find the right partition, for example system.img -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p22, there should be a complete table for s3 mini somewhere in the forum...
Second you need a tool called simg2img, because some of the images need to be converted to be flashed in recovery cause they're somehow compressed. See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/ref-unpacking-repacking-stock-rom-img-t1081239
Third you need a working edify script to edit. You can extract it from the zips of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2526831. You may do a zip file for each image replacing the modem.bin and editing the updater-script. My doubt is that this script uses tmpfs to cache the image, and with system and cache images this is a problem because they will not fit in it. In theory you can remove the caching part and use directly the command like that: package_extract_file("system.img","/dev/block/mmcblk0p22"), but as I said i'm not an expert of edify scripts, I don't know if it will work.
Today I made a first step towards custom ROM by installing the latest TWRP with Odin and taking a backup of all partitions. Rebooted and unfortunately now I have IMEI null and baseband null (it was originally I9305XXUFOA1 I believe)
Nothing else has been touched, I am still using stock ROM, and reset to factory default did not solve it...
I still have the IMEI number and a backup of the EFS partition. But when I restored this partition with TWRP, I still have No Signal.
I searched the forums and only thing closest is a post about the S4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2370699
Is there any suggestion on what I can try to recover this problem?
If I type *#1234#, I get
AP I9305XXUFOB2
CSC I9305PHNFOB2
But no CP?
Now I did a total restore of the backup made with TWRP, but still "unknown baseband"
In case it helps others, here is what I learned
When flashing TWRP 2.8.7.0 on my 9305 with Odin, my modem becomes unusable every time.
It can be easily restored if you have the modem firmware, so that solved it. But it seems TWRP is very unreliable until I downgraded to an older version of it, 2.7.0.0. Now everything is working, although it can be tricky to get into the recovery mode (holding buttons for up to 30 seconds). I suppose this is normal behaviour...
Help please

Hi, I'm going nuts reading for the past 5 hours all the info about this issue and the multiple solutions i have tried with no success, i just stumbled in your post which describes exactly my problem, after flashing twrp bam!!
I have no backups, i bought this phone yesterday, unrooted this morning , spent some hours customizing stuff, got to the point to install a recovery to do a nand backup as the phone had all the apps and settings i wanted and this just happened, i am now going to do a complete stock flash, will it repair my modem? If not can you please provide me with a link to the modem firmware? Is it country associated, will i need a specific for my country/operator?
Thanks,
Bruno

Hi Bruno,
You should try to (re)flash only the modem with Odin. It's not so difficult, just take your time to familiarize with the steps.
To get a modem.bin, either you extract it yourself from a stock rom zip (see http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/) or get one from the topics at xda (for the 9305 I got XXALK2 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...05/modems-i9305-cwm-flashable-modems-t2010116).
I suppose you have no access to TWRP right now? If so, reflash it with Odin too. I recommend version 2.7.0; it works for me very well. Then immediately take backup of everything (EFS etc) and transfer it to your PC
Let us know how it goes,
SOLVED: Null IMEI and baseband
Hi all,
My problem is solved, after flashing the latest stock ROM for my model (I9300) I got my IMEI back and everything back to normal, as told I could have just the modem.bin flashed but I went for the full re-image.
Then i unrooted using cf-autoroot and flashed twrp version 2.8.6.0 instead of 2.8.7.0, rebooted and everything ok. I already performed a full nand backup and learned various lessons from this. I think guys at TWRP should know that their latest version for the galaxy s3 is causing this problem, i believe most people will send their phones for repair because there are so many possible causes for this problem and so many xdifferent possible solutions that most people will quit solving the problem and will try to return the phone for repair.
Thanks for your reply and for the help. I will send an email to twrp linking to this thread.
