Im pretty sure its your networks APN. its different from postpaid. just like what we have here in manila. globe tel uses internet.globe.com.ph for postpaid and http.globe.com.ph for prepaid. commonly cm7 builds with auto APN detects my sim as a postpaid vut its not so I have to edit them after flash. happens also to my other phones.

Costa Rica data issues?

I am in Costa Rica for a week and am having in interesting problem with my phone. I purchased a local sim card and it works great, except the data seems to have odd issues. For instance, I can use Google maps just fine most anyplace I have a signal. But if I try to use the xda app, or the web browser, it doesn't work. I would think that data connections are all the same and it should work? I am using wifi at the moment and it works fine so I know it's not the programs. Any quick ideas? I am here for 4 more days.

My first guess would be to call the provider or ask a local user for the correct APN settings.
I looked up the APN settings online and they are correct. It just seems odd to me that data from Google maps would work just fine over the cell side but nothing else works. I would think it's all or nothing.

Yeah. Usually if your APN is bad, all data is hosed. The provider may be selectively blocking traffic... Eg: if you're on a prepaid dumbphone+data plan, they may grant a narrow range of whitelisted urls or data providers. Not sure.

What data signal does the local service provider use? The captivate's modem can only pick up signals on the 850 and 1900 bandwidths. That's why, for example 3g won't work on a captivate with a tmobile sim card.
I have a widget that says I have an HSDPA connection at 7.2. I am leaning towards some kind of filter or white list on the cellular providers end. Its not to big of a problem since the place I am staying has wifi. But I would like to know the reason for sure in case I run into it again someplace. The other oddity is if I go into marketplace the items I have purchased don't show up in my apps selection. And in Google maps, I can see where I am, but the ability to share the location is greyed out unless I have wifi. Even though the satalitte image updates to wherever I might be. So the data going through is very selective.

I can also send texts to other local phones here but not mms pictures. Very unusual to be able to send/get some data but not all. I did read on another site that prepaid sim cards in Costa Ricardo don't have data but that wouldn't explain my ability to use Google maps to see where I am.

Do you have modem locked in to to one freq only?
I don't believe so. I don't think I flashed anything new since I flashed the darky rom a while ago. At home it switches from E to H which I believe is a different frequency? And I also at home have a dual sim setup swapping between att and tmo as needed. So I would think it's not locked on a frequency. I am flying home tomorrow, but I do appreciate the ideas. And maybe this thread will help someone else.

A search on Google on the subject of blocked IP addresses shows that Costa Rica ( particularly ICE ) has a known problem with being blocked by many providers. That may also be part of the problem.

Phone Shows Roaming Sign When Abroad using a Local SIM

I've recently shifted to another country,
Used my o2 SIM for a day or two and obviously phone showed as Roaming, with the little "R"..
I've now bought a local SIM card and installed and running on a local Provider, yet the phone still shows as Roaming and Data does not work unless I allow Data connection while roaming...
Is this a bug or something?
I should state I've been in a different country recently and also used a local SIM from there and I never had this issue at all... I saw the local provider when using their SIM, Now, I use a local SIM and this still shows an "R" on my signal.. Same with my girlfriends phone...
Any ideas?
Edit: I'm on a N/W unlocked phone..

In my country there were 2 networks, and when a third network started it's business, it was using the infrastructure of one of the existing networks. The phones that were using Sim cards of the third network, all showed that they were in roaming, and if they wanted to use data, they needed to enable "data while roaming" options. Of course, they were never billed for roaming charges. Now this third network has it's own infrastructure, and the roaming sign is a thing of the past.
Maybe this is the case with you too.
I would try to contact the local network provider, to seek the answer you are looking for.

I get this in Thailand because my provider has different names/IDs for the 3G and 2G networks.
The 3G is called "True-H" and the 2G "True Move", or something like that.
The SIM will automatically register on both networks, but if it connects to the 2G network I get the roaming symbol.
The solution is either to enable roaming data (I don't get charged any extra, but need to remember to disable it if I travel), or set my movie network to WCDMA only. This way it won't connect to the 2G network.

Check if you got roaming allowed and switch it of.
Register if needed handset on your network manually.
You might not have the network where you are due to availability area coverage.
Check your apn settings, if they are on the mobile network you need and settings are correct. Perhaps from website provider, or helpdesk you can request them to send settings.
Go to settings, more, mobile networks and check there. Just explore a bit.

Cheers for the replies,
I'd already checked those areas out, APN is correct, Settings from Provider received and installed, Manually selected provider from the Network list...
Still showing 'R' - AS has been said 0 I'll just have to enable Data when Roaming and turn it off when I travel..
which service provider do you use and phone model do you use?
this phenomenon normally happen in new telco on some phone model

[Q] Verizon LG G2 GSM Support

Hello All,
I have been thinking about traveling to Japan this coming year; I have looked at Verizon's International plan, and it seems like they are very pricey.
I have heard that the VS980 has GSM support, with no LTE, which is fine. I have looked into the h20 network, as they have exceptional prices for their international plan.
I have googled it and have gotten mixed answers, so I came here. I have a h20 sim card, and it pulls the APNs, but does not get any service. Is it that I am using a custom rom?
Thanks for the help in advance!

Please someone answer this. I'm in a similar boat.
I'm on the stock verizon ROM. I have a Piranha mobile sim card. I am testing the setup in the US to verify it works. It connects to the T-mobile/Piranha voice and sms network, but data is not working.
Their setup instructions call for setting the apn to openroamer.com, but no mention on the mnc or the mcc values. If I just set the apn to openroamer.com I'm able to save and select it, but as soon as I change the mnc or mcc values to t-mobile the apn disappears after I save. Do I need to set the mnc and mcc values to something specific? I tried to track down exactly what they do, with no luck.
I see mention in another thread that Verizon locks the phones to be unable to connect to other US domestic networks. They also mention that once I'm overseas I'll be fine. I'm skeptical.
I was thinking of going to the t-mobile store to see if I could borrow a sim card to confirm it's a firmware issue. I would rather not root at this point. Any other courses of action?
Thanks for shedding any light.

It turns out to be a activation error for me, after I correctly activated the sim, it worked! (silly me!)
For your problem, I looked on your carriers website/ help websites and there are no values except the APN.
You might need a data plan active. I would try using other carriers, because for me the h20 sim worked with data.
Verizon has no control over what network you go on either, FCC has a couple laws that prevent from Verizon doing that except exclude the hardware needed to connect to other networks.
Sorry I could not help.
I popped my Aio Wireless (AT&T) SIM from my Nexus 4 into my G2 and after a little APN tweaking I had HSPA+ working with no issues. It is my understanding if you have AT&T Band 4 LTE (limited markets) and the correct service providor, it will even connect 4G/LTE on AT&T networks. I swapped my Verizon SIM back in and removed the APN's and all was well on Verizon again. I am stock (KitKat) and rooted with only a few few Xposed modules installed, no custom ROM.
It sounds like, from reading the posts above, the Verizon LG-G2 IS a World Phone and should function straight on from stock on a UK provider like Three just by purchasing a sim and plugging it in then configuring the APN settings !
The problem is that when my Susan went just this morning to a Three store in London, the guy there told her that her Verizon LG-G2 was LOCKED to Verizon network only, and that she would have to do something like obtain an unlock code because the phone would not work on any other provider until she did that.
Verizon's International folks told us earlier that the phone would work fine, given GSM frequency issue restrictions, overseas and there was no need for any UnLock proceedure or code.
Does she just need to find a competent tech at a different Three store ?
Or is she going to be unable to play Ingress the whole two weeks she is over there in England and Scotland ?
Update...both Three and Vodaphone folks in London have now told her that the Verizon LG-G2 is carrier locked and cannot be used without Verizon unlocking it on any other network. So, Verizon was wrong and she is limited to WiFi only for the next two weeks ?

No global mode Verizon phones are carrier locked.

It is very odd. We tried it on a T-Mobile sim over here before she left, I am pretty sure, and it just worked. Still, over in London Three & Vodaphone say it is locked and useless on their networks and their sims don't work.
Maybe it is subsidy-locked ?
Maybe they just didn't set the APN and data settings right at the stores ?

Dev edition on att 3g

While I'm waiting for my new 4g sim from att in using my 5yr old sim cut with my trusty kitchen knife..
It worked fine for voice but only registered the 4g apn which did not work (always thought the sim was simply a dumb number storage) ... So i manually typed the 3g cingular apn that registers on my old phone with the same Sim.
It worked. I do get data. But the data icon show "E" next to it...
Anyway to get gprs?

[Q] Connnecting to Cingular APN

Anyone successfully connect to the old cingular apn? It won't let me get a 3G data connection (I get signal bars with an exclamation point on the icon). If I force 2G, it will fully connect to edge. Then if I select 3G as my preferred network type the signal icon switches to 3g then H and then back to the exclamation point all very quickly. I have tried a couple apn settings without any luck. Since I'm getting service, but it won't give me data, is there something baked in the phone not allowing me to connect? I can put the sim in my old phone (optimus g) and it connects fine.
I can connect to the normal "nxtgenphone" apn but I don't want to right now.
any help or thoughts on this would be appreciated
isnt cingular the old tmobile? cingular doesnt exist anymore from what i understand, so you cant expect to connect to it.
Cingular is ATT now.

I can connect to the att apns, but my download speed is a whopping 0.5 Mbps. Connecting to cingular apn, which I can do with my old phone, at least gets me back into 3g speeds.
Are you on an lte provisioned account? If so the older apn's are locked out. Att did this because of the ability to bypass the throttle restrictions when on an unlimited plan. As far as the apn that works for 2g, that's probably the mms network.

Check the attached screenshot for the APN settings, even though its called ATT. Its worth double checking. Otherwise, two things should happen - find your old phone and get them to reprovision your account to work with the old APN, or troubleshoot with them and find out why you're getting such **** data speeds.
http://apn-settings.com/us/att-apn-settings/
Are you on an older unlimited Nation plan or Family talk plan with unlimited data? If so, your speeds are being throttled after surpassing 3gb. Those download rates are tell tale. AT&T has blocked APNS other than NXTGENPHONE for those using a capable LTE device for the reasons mentioned above . If you were to change the APN to regular 3g ATTPhone or Cingular WAP. Your account is auto provisioned to reduce speeds.
Yeah throttling is the issue. Just strange I can go through cingular with a different lte capable phone.

Using a Family Share Plan I had connected via the default AT&T APN. I believe it was AT&T "phone" APN. However, I recently switched to my company provides AT&T Corporate Mobile Share Plan, and I had to switch my APN to AT&T "PTA" APN in order to get LTE to work. This is what I'm currently using on my Nexus 6. AT&T's NXTGENPHONE APN did work for me when I was running the 5.0 Developer Preview on my Nexus 5 on the AT&T Corporate Plan. However I lost the settings for it. Does anyone have a listing of the APN settings for it? I would like to compare speed tests.
Nevermind, got it from source
