On their thread below:

They included an extras tab, which they referred to as format zips. I just want to know what each one them do, I have no clue about what they do at all.
•Calkulin's Format All
•Light's Format All
their utilities you put on the root of your sdcard to use whil in recovery, ya know when your flashing a new rom, wipe data cashe and dalvic, then flash the format all zip, which ever you prefer and it formats boot data cashe and dalvic so you dont have to do it individually in mounts and storage. alot of people dont ust it, is a matter of preference. I myself do, makes for a better flash. and BTW you can use them with any rom. Their a general use utility and pretty handy to have on hand...later man
Thanks for the help and one more thing, do I have to flash a google apps zip with the rom or does it already come with all of it? And if so, will any version of the google apks work?
No,all the google stuff is precooked into the rom, most sense based roms have it already there. this one you just wipe data, cashe and dalvic, flash whichever format.zip you want and flash your rom. be sure to get the latest update of the zero, the rc2 its off the chain man really. and dont forget to thank the devs and donate if you can , any more questions let us know...
Ok I wiped all the necessary stuff and flashed the rom and rebooted. Currently my phone is stuck in the "HTC Quietly Brilliant" white screen, wondering how long loading should take because it is just stuck on that screen currently.
is cool man, dont worry. the first bot takes a pretty long time. sometimes about 10 mins. be patient
It will also reboot at the setup screen. This is normal and to be expected. Just let it load up again and it'll be alright.
I use Calkulin's Format All quite often. It makes things make easier. By the way Zero hero RC2 was well worth the wait. Awesome job!
Thanks for all the help, I got it to finally work right last night.
Very cool man, you should stop at the developement thread and say thanks to Matt and Dastin dude. They put an incredible amount of effort into the Zero, they deserve all the credit due. Also if you have any issues or other questions let it be known there in the developement thread, Im sure Matt would love to hear your opinion and and would give you any advice you might need....Later man

**Edit: I was completely wrong.. I figured out everything, i know what i'm doing now lol.. thanks guys.
My first time rooting was a couple days ago when i had learned about the "1 Click Root" method...
I succeeded, got that latest ROM (to my knowledge) CM6 RC2 from the trusty (lol) ROM Manager.. which i enjoy a lot since im rooted and what not. I also themed my ROM a couple times to (what i think) are pretty cool themes..
But anyways, to make a boring story short (lol).. I absolutely hate (with a passion) wiping my data to my phone when i see or hear about this awesome new theme i want.. people say it is a must to wipe ur phones data to apply the "best" effect..
This gets REALLY old.. i had to do this like three times yesterday because i kept seeing new themes i wanted lol.. Re-entering passwords and re downloading all of your apps everytime you want a new ROM or want to apply a theme is too much work for how "great" rooting is.. Dont get me wrong, i love the new style of my phone, it looks amazing, but man! do i really have to keep wiping data to apply the things i want??
I now, noticed that all my contacts are not my phone. Only the contacts phones numbers on facebook that i had sync'd.. "My" contacts that i have in my phone are not there.. I imported them from my sim card and re-booted, but still not there.. Could this be because of my theme?
To what really made me mad was my camera, it keeps force closing.. Is this also because of the theme? I have the normal radio ending in 4.06.00.12_7.. I do not know if it didnt work before i applied the theme or when i rooted, i just realized last night it didnt work.. i do not want to re flash cm6 to see if the camera is working just because i do not want to "start" all over again.. with wiping and all that... if i have to, sadly, i will.
I had stock froyo frf91 before i rooted my phone.. in all honesty, should i just un root my phone and go back to the way it was? because if i have to keep wiping data, and starting over, im going to blow a fuse lol..
*** Sorry for my aggressive tone everybody, i just would like everything to be a smooth ride wth no wiping and i can apply themes as easy as 123 without losing data.. is there any ROM or theme that you could recommend?
please, someone help me... thanks xda community
I don't ever wipe when I upgrade to the next version of cyan, so I don't lose a single thing. People say to wipe if you have problems. But you shouldn't have problems which means you don't need to wipe. It runs perfectly fine for me this way with no issues at all, no force closes, etc.

Really? hmm.. ok thanks man.. but in rom manager when you downlaod something, it brings up an option saying backup and wipe.. do i have to click that or can i just cancel and just go ahead and reboot..?
The way I do it (maybe not the fastest) is to set up your rom exactly how you want it, nandroid, then install any mods that might eff up your installation. Once you've installed the mod and you're 100% sure mms/wifi/bt/gmail/etc are all working, you can nandroid again and use that as your base.
The only time you'd need to wipe is if you want to set up another rom so you could switch back and forth between different roms.
And by different roms I don't mean updates within roms, like CM6 nightlies or enom's updates, I mean completely different roms like CM6 as opposed to enom.

Ok thank you.. what about for themes and what not...? it says i have to wipe as well....
Your problem looks to be trying to navigate complicated stuff with lack of skills.
There is a good reason to root "old-fashioned" way, without 1-click stuff: if you read all you need to read and understand (various guides that teach you how to work with recovery etc) to root, then you won't get lost when rooted. Now you're trying to do stuff without even knowing, how things work, and let me guess - you didn't read any guide, you don't know how to work with recovery w/o ROM manager and don't know how to load a ROM, etc.
My suggestion is - go to Development section, open the stickies with guides and start reading. Do the same in General section, and don't skip the Wiki either.
Root brings you full control of the system, and it's excellent - knowing your way you can do tons of stuff, theming being the least interesting/important. But to control, you need to know and understand more than "1-click stuff".
Or you can just go back to stock, if you see no added value in a rooted phone.

What theme are you talking about, I don't recall seeing any themes requiring a wipe.
The only thing I can think of is a pre-themed rom. If you don't know the difference between a theme and a themed rom, you should follow Jack's advice and read up.
Your mistake is thinking that because there is an option to wipe in Rom Manager, then it must be necessary. No it isn't. The option is there for the people who want to wipe, but upgrading from one CM to another won't need it, themes won't need it, etc.
It is your job to know when it is needed or not. And you get that by reading and understanding how your phone works.
just wipe the Cache and the Dalvik Cache, the only time you must fully wipe is if you get boot loop when flashing a new rom/mod/etc.

You just uncheck the wipe one. Besides you can just use recovery and don't have to use ROM manager.

You certainly do not wipe to install a theme. That makes no sense! You would lose all your data all the time.

I'm still running stock unrooted. One off the main reason why i don't really want to root is because I know how customizable our phones are, and i love new things.. like you, if i was to see a new theme Or rom I'd jump on it straight away. I don't think I'd ever stop!!

Honestly that's exactly why I didn't root for 3 months. But once I found my exact setup now I just know how to setup each new ROM quickly. After that point now its just fun to tinker the phone and try the cyan nightly. It's really better to just root it. I was in the same spot as you I know what you mean.

The one click method is great man.. no harm is done, the bootloader is still locked.. you can unroot if you dont like it.. btw, if you root, ur gonna love it lol.. there is so many options into customizing ur phone!! It's driving me nuts, and I would like someone to help me understand. I came here with a bricked and completely unrepairable phone, and I have since managed to get a new Note. The completely stubborn side of me went right away flashing ICS ROMS...Okay, that's all good and well...No harm done anyway. But why don't developers include the "base" and root kernel files in their frickin' ROMS?! It's incredibly annoying. Why do I have to go into "ODIN" and download mode to flash some repack, wipe wipe wipe, reboot, flash another base, wipe wipe wipe, reboot, and finally flash a "custom" ROM. I should be able to flash a single .zip file through CWM and be down with it. I'm not bad talking at all, and I greatly appreciate what developers do around here.
For example, MIDNOTE includes ICS kernel and base...one integrated file. EVERYTHING works, and I have full root access. I'm wondering what it will be like when Samsung comes out with an official ICS version, will I have to flash ten different files to use a custom ROM or will developers be able to integrate it into their work? Just a question...not meant to cause trouble in the least...it just erks me the wrong way. And I'm sure others are wondering the same too.
They does it because you dont need to get those annoying yellow triangle and increase those custom binary counters....Would you like having triangles and increase counters? And the ICS roms are too early releases and are still in beta stages. So you need to go with the process.GB roms dont have these problems and are less hectic.Thats why I still stay in GB.Custom ICS roms will be ok when Official ICS is released.

I'm serious guys! This is the only device I've ever owned where I have to flash a million different files just to get my phone booting...so I'm just trying to understand what's up. And obviously I LOVE the Note or else I wouldn't have bought two.
Developers do this for free...okay, yeah...but they don't have to do it half-assed? If I was going to sell you a car, I'd probably give it to you one piece. I wouldn't make you take all the parts and put them together yourself only in the end to find out that you're missing the engine and have to start all over again. And honestly, that's how I feel around here sometimes.
And the comment about Windows is out of line. I don't use Windows...why does everyone assume Windows? Honestly don't know why more don't use Linux around here. Windows just plan ol' sucks.
Edit: Custom ROMS aren't build from "scratch" by the way...and not everyone around here who posts a ROM is a "developer."
This issue is not because of lazy developers. It is because Samsung is tired of replacing devices under warranty when the terms of said warranty have been broken, and as a result putting extra security measures in place.
Lazy developers would let you get the yellow triangle, and then let you foot the bill for your mistakes while flashing.

Huh? I'm talking about doing everything from CWM...not from ODIN. So no yellow triangle...and as far as I know, every custom ROM around here is a CWM flashable .zip file...minus the oh so coveted ICS repack...which needs ODIN for some unknown reason to me. So now, I'm not calling myself lazy, or the developers around here for that matter. There's a good reason, I know it...I want to find out. Samsung is a different beast for sure, and this is the first Samsung device I've owned, and I'm trying to avoid bricking again, so I'd like to learn all the procedures and such...and why they're necessary. It's for my piece of mind really.

You just answered your own question. The process is long and somewhat complicated because it HAS to be done via recovery. If it were done via download mode in ODIN, it would be much simpler; but it would trip the counter. Using recovery instead of download mode sidesteps this problem, but it introduces others. That is why flashing to/from ICS/GB via recovery is so complicated.

I appreciate you bleeding edge types, but this is why I wait a few weeks AFTER an official rom is released, before I even consider a custom rom.
ICS is still an infant...I'd rather have one that was at least able to drive a car before I install it.

Lol....Ok.understood it now.Now generally as said in above post, lazy developers would let you get triangles and increase custom binaries. So they need to make multiple files which makes your phone ready for flashing your favorite firmware. If you probably own a galaxy s series you would know how easy it was to flash firmwares.Thats because sammy did not implement any security measures which Gnote has.Hope you understand

It's because of the kernel and root. Unlike GB kernels, this one seems to be a bit wonky, and your root permissions get lost easily in CWMR flashing or Nand restoring. Hence the convoluted flashing procedures. Lack of code sources, I suppose.
All of us have to accept this if we want a taste of Roms based on the Chinese leak. No-one is happy with the current state of the affairs, but we manage.
Nobody is forcing you to deal with it. If you can't, stick with GB Roms until the final version of ICS drops.
I have flashed several ICS Roms and only flashed the chainfire repack the very first time when I moved to ICS from gingerbread. I have flashed Criskelo, rocket and midnote just from CWM. Never had a triangle, SOD etc...just full wipe before I flashed and then cleared caches after.
Hello All;
I have decided to try and male my HP touch pad an Android only touch pad.
I need help though as i am a novice at best.
I am looking for help on the files i will need. Want to install CM 10 recent and CWM.
Do i need a boot loader or will that be in the ROM?
And what other files will i need?
i am assuming i need a ROM, Recovery, and GAPPS. Other than that i am not sure.
Found someone on the WebOS Nation who is willing to help so i dont want to go into this like and idiot, i want to have my ducks in a row.
Any help will be appreciated
thanks

Good point, Hey let me ask you something.
I like flashing ROMs but I always end up with a mess. Moboot, i dont think updates as grub2 does. So, i have thought the best way to switch ROMs would be treating the ROM as a first install, does that make sense and do you agree?
Or do you know a method to change ROMs that works well for you?

Android doesn't update the way Linux does, it only updates apps; the bootloader isn't going to update neatly from a package manager. At the same time, updating the TP's bootloader (moboot) is usually unnecessary. On the other hand I usually like to keep my recovery (TWRP/CWM) up to date. When I switch ROMs I just wipe and flash from recovery. Never had a problem.

As far as I know, most ROM install scripts automatically wipe system for you. Can't hurt to try, though.
Thankfully I have this zip again thanks to sstar posting it the other day. This zip will wipe your ulmage clean. Just flash it as you would a rom, than flash rom and gapps after.

I'm just getting ready to flash the release candidate cm10.1. Don't mean to ask dumb questions but before I do it I just would like some verification that I've done all my prep work correctly. I've backed up my user apps on Titanium Backup, Did a stock system backup on TWRP. Tranfered the CM10.1.3-RC and GAPPS to my internal storage. So if I understand everything correctly all I need to do is wipe and then install the 2 files and it should reboot into CM10.1. I'm sure I'll get all kinds of negative comments from members, but we all have to have started somewhere at some time. So someone please let me know if I've done this right to this point and that I'm ready to install. I've been waiting for a more stable CM10.1 version since I got this phone and was pleasantle surprised to see it appear late last night. Thanks so much for any support I can get!!!! Dont worry you wont get any negative comments thats what this forum is here for. Sounds like you got the process down. do a factory wipe and also to remember to wipe the system too in the advance wipe section. just avoid wiping the internal storage, sdcard or USB-otg. after that yea queue up the zips in TWRP and reboot.
I would back your backups to your pc or cloud as a just incase.

Well it seems all went well. Thanks for giving me the confidence to move forward and do this. When I pull down the notification screen and tap the upper right hand icon I see a small triangle that says "searching for...." I do have wifi enabled and I have a feeling it is searching for a network. Is that normal or can I disable it? Also is there a way to add or remove what is shown on that panel? Thanks again
Not gonna ask the best ROM, as everyone gets a bit uptight about those, and feel the need to defend "their team" and all that...
My question is more generic, in that I am wondering if there is even a ROM out there that will meet MY needs... so if I list those things that I would need in a ROM, maybe someone can simply answer yes or no and point me in the right direction?
Here is what I would be looking for in a ROM:
1) Stability, has to be as stable as stock, no screens of dead or random reboots
2) Speed, zero lag, fast and fluid
3) Everything has to work. If it works on stock, be it apps like VZW Visual VM or whatever, it needs to work on the ROM
4) More polish and eye candy, nice animations, make the device beautiful to use without being buggy or laggy
5) Battery life at least as good as stock
If there is a ROM that gives you all that, has a bit more customization but not so much that it takes half a day to set it up, what would it be? Or would I be better served just using a different launcher?
I have not installed a ROM in a couple years... I was a flashaholic for awhile, but a few phones that I had in a row worked really well in stock form, and some had locked bootloaders that never got cracked, so I kinda gave up on them for while and so my knowledge is a bit rusty...
What I don't want to do is go to the trouble of installing a new ROM and having it not work, or be buggy, etc... This has to be daily driver quality and I want to USE it, no spend too much time fiddling with it.
Ideas?

Cool. And I am sorry if this is a dumb question, but like I said, it has been a couple years since I installed a ROM...
I can use Wug's Nexus toolkit to install a custom recovery, and then take the downloaded ROM and recommended GAPPS files, go into Recovery, install ROM, install Gapps, then factory reset and I am good to go?

I don't personally recommend toolkits unless you have ADB/fastboot knowledge and experience but otherwise yes. You don't need to factory reset after ROM installation, just do the required wipes, generally listed in the OP of the ROM you choose, in TWRP, prior to flashing.

TWRP recovery is THE recovery for shamu.

Got it, just installed it. Put the ROM and Gapps in a folder and I will first make a Nandroid of my current setup... Then I will try it out.
The OP for that ROM doesn't have any instructions, but you said that in TWRP that I need to wipe cache and stuff PRIOR to installing the ROM? I always thought you did that last? Am I remembering it wrong or did something change?

For your first installation, wipe, used advanced wipe, then select dalvik, cache, data, and system. Then flash your ROM. Updates to the same ROM can usually be "dirty flashed" by simply wiping cache and dalvik prior to installation.
Tried it out, but found that it was slower in Antutu by 3,000 points and it was a bit laggy at times... Weird.
I wouldn't hold a ton of value or base anything off Antutu.
Sorry if I didn't pay attention to time stamps between your posting. I did look at your stats and see you have plenty of experience here. May just need to give a bit of time for ROM to settle.
I have tried several ROMs here and consider there to be a BIG 3, or the most popular. I won't say the names due to the fact that I don't want to place any one above the other. However, I would recommend a ROM with Layers.
When you go to wipe prior, wipe all but internal storage. I wipe twice, just because I am OCD. Flash all necessaries and sometimes an alternate kernal will help, but give baked in kernal a chance. At least a cylcle or two. Wipe the Davlik and Cache after flash, as TWRP suggests.
There are a few to choose from which are close to stock without overdoing it. Most things folks want to do to customize can be done with apps in Play Store without over loading file size of ROM.
OK, I'll say it, but I don't want you to think I am partial. Try Chroma

Oh trust me, I have no concerns with people being partial. Some people get bent out of shape in "best ROM" debates, but I don't. I WANT to know which ones are top tier, and why, from people that have used them.
I know that Antutu is not the end all be all... But when I saw it was laggy, I run that to see if it is just placebo, and sure enough, it was slower and there was a little stuttering and lower frame rates in the final 3D game test... I just use it as a reference point, that's all...
I played with Layers a little and didn't really get much out of it... It just seemed to change the color a bit on menus and things, so I didn't see a lot of benefit.... or am I missing something?
I will take a look at Chroma and see how that looks, thanks.
