EDIT 23 FEB 2012 :
=== THIS THREAD IS OBSOLETE.. THERE IS A LOT OF DEVELOPMENT FROM ATRIX-DEV-TEAM AND FAUX SINCE I LAST POST, AND WHOEVER FOUND THE SAME PROBLEM BETTER TRY THE NEWER KERNEL.. ===
Old Post :
This is CM7 stock kernel extracted from CM7weekly29jan. Credit goes to Atrix-dev-team.
I found out that this is the only kernel in Gingerbread for atrix doesn't have Partial Wakelock by AlarmManager. I know that stock froyo doesn't have wakelock too.
Half day using this kernel, AlarmManager only wake for less than 30sec, and take less than 1% of the whole partial lock, compared to before, it could take up to few hours and 90%+.
I create this thread so that CM based ROM (CM7,Miui,Neutrino) user can test this kernel, if this non-wakelock really improve battery or not, or its just show different kind of log and had no effect on battery.
I only got hold atrix for a few day, a friend ask me to unlock the bootloader, and I have returned it.
If this really improve battery, I hope this can brought attention to developer on how to fix partial wakelock by Alarmmanager on stock kernel. If this thread is no good, feel free to delete it.
This CWM replace boot.img and /system/lib/modules/dhd.ko from CM7weekly.
I used CWM script from faux's, and replace those 2 files.
It is recommended to backup your rom before installing this.
Edit 05feb2012:
I'm sorry, I shouldn't have started a thread of a device I don't hold anymore. Today faux have released his new kernel, it might already solve the problem as and I couldn't test it. But for clearer view on why I started this thread, what I mean is that I saw BetterBatteryStats shows this. This is screenshot from other device as example.
On my defy, the percentage never goes above 1%. But on atrix, it could go above 20%, I even seen it on 90%+. Using CM7weekly29jan kernel, it always stay below 1%. And about the time AlarmManager is on, maybe I was wrong, it was not below 30s, maybe 1minute+, but before, it could go hours. Problem is I only tested for around 6hour. I just install the kernel, no wipe or clear cache. On that short test, I left the phone idle with screen off. I check on Battery Monitor Widget, it seems that each 1% of the battery can last slightly longer than before.
I hope this can make things clear.
Note: For quick test, you should see the partial wakelock 'since unplugged', not 'since charged', because reboot will reset the timer in 'since unplugged', but the 'since charged' will not reset unless you plugged the usb port for charging.
More info : device is Atrix International, last fullsbf is 2.3.4.45.0.20SEA.

Could somebody point me a commit that fixed this issue? What was the reason of this issue? Could this fix be applied to the stock kernel too?
Very interesting! Will test this weekend, sounds promising if it really does improve battery life on cm7 based roms, maybe talk to clemsyn or faux about it.

On other kernel, switch off screen for 10minutes. alarmmanager should wake for more than 1minutes. with this kernel, always below 30sec.
But whats important is the effect on battery life. A proper test would be night time battery usage, wether its the same as before, or gives better battery life.
I search for the commit too, but couldn't find it, I got no knowledge on building android from source.
Interesting.. anyone trying?

I will be trying this on Neutrino 2.2EE.

So...is it just ripoff from weekly 29?
Or did you modified something?

I'm sorry, this indeed just a rip off from weekly29jan, if this is not appropriate, I will take the zip down.
I make the zip so its easier for people who want to test. From my short test, BetterBatteryStats show smaller wakelock by AlarmManager, but I haven't test it long enough to make sure how the effect on battery. If this indeed have impact on battery, I hope enough to get dev's attention to fix the wakelock on stock kernel.
bobo9900 gave proper credit to the dev-team and is just posting the file for easy access with his thoughts on possible improvements of battery life. There is no need to give him a hard time for that.

The word "ripoff" was probably what rankled a bit, as the word normally implies theft. Possibly a better phrase would have been "was this from the 29-Jan weekly?" or something like that. Less loaded phrasing that way.
After initial testing, I'm not seeing a reduction in alarm wake locks. Will give it a full cycle to test battery life

Any updates on this?
I'm running MeanROM 3.1 with Anthrax RLS 06 and am seeing substantial wake time from AlarmManager.
I've used Gscript to dump the AlarmManager log, but I'm not entirely sure which parts to scrutinize. I also don't know how to wipe this log and start fresh... I recently flashed this rom/kernel combo after running Chad's modified superwipe, yet this log seems to span 50+ days.
Related
I have recently gotten into flashing custom roms, and am currently running Axura 2.5 with SetiroN's 1.4.3
After initial battery conditioning and what not, I have been having good life out of my phone.
I do every now and then wake up to a warm phone which has dropped nearly 40% battery in 6 hours of sleep.
The culprit as per OS Monitor is system/bin/mediaserver
It seems to use a constant cpu of 10%-20%
Trying to kill the process just results in it restarting and burning up cpu again.
Only way to kill it is to reboot the phone.
Since the Axura development thread has been closed and appears Adam is either upset with people complaining or maybe just taking a breather (love the rom) I am not able to get more information there, though when I did bring it up there, others also noticed similar findings.
Anyone know what this file is, what is causing it to go spastic and kill my battery, and how to make it behave?

Could be gallery. Not really sure
Install SGS tools from market, and install Gallery 3D from there. The default Gallery on phone has a bug that keeps the sensor on draining battery.
is this true? Will that truly solve the battery issues? Let me know because if so I wanna flash back to it.
I was watching my battery drain like 1 percent every 2 minutes , I watched it. I absolutely loved the rom tho, let us know if it works
Yep its true. There were issues for awhile. But not sure if the fixed one was included or not. But worth a shot.

Yes. This is the first thing I do on every ROM I set up now. Gallery by Samsung that is distributed by default has a sensor bug that keeps the sensor all even after closing gallery.
Thanks for the tip.
I know I've done that in previous flashes, must have forgotten this time.
Will see how my baby does now.
Definately love Axura Froyo compared to AT&T Eclair.

Bugs
it is very buggy, u can use face detection lockscreen, all gba dosent work, some apps just close simultanly (they are still open in background), video recording only 720p, is is still better than stock rom, the good part: u can use google chrome, and connect a wii remote controller
Sorry i'm not the coder of this ROM but i think with the next updates it will became stable. There are a lot of bug but the most important functionality work
will it will be easy to come back to CM7 as clean everything and flash the CM from CWM?
Is there a recent apps button?
My favourite feature on my Transformer Prime
Arcee hasn't guaranteed continued support for this build. We just have to hope for it.
Most general functions work anyway and battery life is pretty good. Been using it all day and the phone is faster than I've ever seen it.
Really hope he carries on this project until we have a fully working, stable build.
Edit: Hold home button for recent apps list.....yeh, it's there.... ;-)

There's no video recording at all. That's because there's no media encoding/decoding available yet. It will crash the camera as soon you start recording.

Make a nandroid backup in CWM of your current CM7 ROM. You can go back and forth between them. This is my second time on CM9. I'm trying something. Maybe I'll go back later to CM7 again.

Only issue for now is the battery consumption, which is quite high. I can't last 8 hours on it. Maybe it will improve over some charging cycles, but it's too cool to give up for now. Otherwise, everything seems to work quite ok, even a2dp works. Maybe FM-radio doesn't work, but I don't really care anyway

I need a little help. My I897 is running on MPD 2.0 ROM, w/ EyeCandy v 3.15 and Corn Kernel 7.06, and it is stuck bootlooping at the swirling optical illusion at start-up. I don't know why, all I was doing was playing a couple of games and it was really lagging, and freezing up and it has been a lot lately. I even posted about it yesterday or the day before? Whatever?
So tonight, it just froze while playing a game and it was totally unresponsive so I let it sit. After about 10 minutes, I noticed it was on the optical illusion and stuck with the illusion spinning away. I pulled the battery, restart the phone same thing. Goes through the first start up screens and gets to the swirl thing and goes no further.
I pulled the battery again and replaced it, went into recovery and hit the reboot device and started it up. Same thing.
Should I reflash the Rom? If I do, I have to do a full wipe and that will suck.
Has anyone had this problem on MPD 2.0?
Maybe someone has an answer.
Thanks, whoever tries to help me with this.

I'm not so sure what MPD is but Corn kernel is on GB. Therefor, there's no developping nor support being made for it, which could explain why you got no answer on your previous post.
Luckily, you can get in recovery. Make a backup, wipe cache/dalvik and try to boot up. If that doesn't work, back in recovery, wipe cache/dalvik, factory reset and reflash your ROM. Altough, I would suggest looking at the newer ROMs out there as we're up to JB 4.2.1 (you're on GB 2.3.5).
If you go ahead with the upgrade, make sure you follow the full instructions in the OP.
Thanks, I already reflshed and its running. I know that there are newer Roms I only flashed it because I hadn't yet flashed anything from the Collective and the eyecandy theme I wanted to check out also.
But after running great for a couple weeks, it started getting buggy. Now I'm gonna do something else. My SII is running darkside Evolution #5 4.03 by thederekjay w/venom kernel, and I wanted an older Rom in my Cap, for contrast.
I'm not sure what I'll do next. I just needed it running. It is my business line for my electrical contracting company. And it will start ringing in about a ½ hour.
Thanks, for your response and have a great day.

Wait, the collective? The Collective and The Family used to be one team.. Yet I dunno what you mean by MPD?
And if you're looking into something stable, I would highly suggest either AOKP or AoCP (4.1.2).

What would you recommend for a stable build? I use my Cap as my business line. So it has to be reliable. Camera, GPS, texting, etc..., all have to function. But I also like to have the little extras. As you know I'm on the kk4 kernel, and I'm OK with flashing, not okay with having to run anything that needs me to use Linux or do any command lines that kinda thing. I still new to everything. Thanks

There are also tweaks in recovery that u can choose from and even the ability to change the partitions to Ext4. Check the kk4 corn kernel's op for info on these things.

What about the kernel tweaks (ROM toolbox pro) the voltage controlsyscti tweaks? What is that for, signalling the different MHz -0mV? I'm an electrician and have been for 20 years but electronics is a new hobby and the phones my new medium. I would love to know more, so if you could tell me what I should read or??? That would help me learn more I would be stoked.

OC = Overclock
UV = Undervolt
SoD = Sleep of Death
I don't suggest changing voltage on the cappy (UV). The processor isn't strong/fast enough, therefor it takes more time to process what you ask of it = more screen time = more battery drain. While screen off though, your battery will be better (can also cause black screen and SoD at unstable state). Screen on is the main battery drain for androids. So basically, reducing your voltage (UV) will lower your battery consumption, of course at a price = slower processing and despite you intention to reduce battery drain, it might increase it. The Captivate has proved to be quite unstable with OC/UV on GB and up.
Up'in your Mhz (OC) will make your phone faster but at the cost of faster battery drain and faster hardware usage. On top of that, both can make your phone unstable. Finding the right combination can take some time if you really wanna get into it. There are guides about it which you can find with a little search, altough, once again, I don't recommend it.
Thanks Bwolf, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain some of that. I have read some some of that stuff in other posts, over the past year or more that I've been on XDA, although it was Greek to me at the time. Now I knowwhat you guys are saying, I just don't know the hows or whys. In time.
I will follow your advice on the voltage and the OC and leave it alone.
There was a time a while back when I first started messing around and I changed something it might have been voltage, and my Cap went nuts. It was sucking down my battery right before my eyes, so fast and getting hot, I pulled the battery and I don't remember how I got it straightened out, but I did. Crazy! So, I know better, curiosity killed the cat (cap) lOL. Thanks Again

Hehe np. As for what happened before, pulling the battery most likely reseted your kernel settings (OC in this case) as it probably wasn't ''set on boot''. Probably saved you a lot of hastle too
I have used Slimbean rom for a while now and I have beeen very happy about it. I thoguht the battery time has been good so I haven't bothered to check it until now.
I charged the phone to 100% and after 9 hours (where I didn't touch it at all) it had drained down to 85% (everything of except wifi). I had Betterbatterystats instaled to se what was draining it and mostly it's this "baseband_xmm_power". Is this from the rom, kernel or maybe even an app?
The only app I can think of is AutomateIt. a automatic setting app but I'm not sure.
Could it be beacuse I have such a bad signal were I live? My phone costantly drops out of range and rconnects all the time.

Well I can't find the answer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2229050&page=19
Read all the post, and there is one kernel wich solves it but it's for another rom.
A brief search shows that about a gazillion people had this same exact problem and there are something like 1000 threads already in this phone's section alone....You found no solution bacause....well there is none! Some kernels are modded so that the baseband wakelock won't show up but it's still there. Ususally on our phone when wiping cache and dalvik you need to do one more normal reboot or it has trouble going into sleep
Moving to custom kernels solved the problem for me.
I'm actually using warewolf v8. It works great.
baseband_xmm_power can not be removed completelly, because it should be an important wakelock for the NVIDIA device. Anyway, the werewolf kernel fixes the excessive wakelocks from it.
Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has noticed an increase in the amount of battery that Android OS uses. My battery was great prior to 4.4 and it seemed to have maintained that level immediately after I flashed the stock image. However, over the past few weeks I've noticed that my battery life has been abysmal. I am running 4.4 with GravityBox modifications on a CDMA Dev Edition X.
I used BBStats and GSAM Monitor and believe that some Kernel process is keeping the CPU running when it does not need too. Is there any way to flash a new kernel or is there something else that I should do?
I've attached picture from the stock battery screen as I unfortunately forgot to SS GSAM.
I did a brief search to see if anyone had a similar issue but I was unable to find any relevant topics. If there is one that I missed, please point me in the right direction. Thanks!
Someone posted this with the rather unhelpful title of "Help me figure this out!"

Sorry, it does not look like I took one of the partial wakelocks. I did take one of the kernel wakelocks which I've now included. I also realized that I did take a screenshot of GSAM as well. Hopefully this will help.
I charged my phone about before my initial post so I don't have up to date BBS just yet.

I checked out that thread. It doesn't appear that the issue that I am having is similar to the one that they are experiencing. I believe that I've narrowed down the kernel as the problem whereas there's was something actively using the phone process.
Is the deleted wakelock the only kernel wake lock you're seeing?

At the time it was. However, I recently fully charged my phone so I'm going to see if clearing out several apps corrected the issue. I'll report back here tomorrow after I've had the opportunity to see how this charge goes.
I appreciate all of the feedback thus far.
