why do some apps run although I did not start them - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys
I am really confused as to why some apps show to be running in
settings---manage applications--running services
like for example contract killer, office suits, lets golf 3d, NFL pro 2012
knowing that i did not even turn them on, so when I press stop those apps, after few minutes they show up again in running services.
Why is that?????

Most apps have 'listeners' that listen for events. When this event occurs, they are woken by the OS to do whatever they want to so. This is why so many stock apps are impossible to kill, they just start up again.
I use Android Assistant to stop apps starting at boot, and Autorun manager to disable all listeners for apps I do not want active. I think Autorun Manager can do it all itself, however, but I bought AA first.
I kill all things I do not like such as WiFi sharing, Bluetooth sharing, Social and Music Hubs. Be careful not to kill services that are required!
You do need a Rooted phone for this to work, however. It was my main reason for rooting once again. It is well worth it, and not as riskly / tricky as flashing a custom ROM. Be aware you may need to 'unroot' to get OTA updates and warranty fixes.
I also use droidwall to prevent apps getting to the internet by GPS, WiFi or both. That makes me feel a lot safer!
Overall my battery life seems 50% greater, and my mobile data access is about 50% less.

Apps keeps launching back even after force close (froyo91)..

in 2.1, most of my apps didnt relaunch when i force close them but now they keep jumping right back even after using apps like automatic task killer and advanced task manager.. i dont want em to run when i am surfing the net thru gprs as i dont have unlimited data plans.. a little help here.. ?
pls
wow no one wana help out ...
You're not the only one as I have same issue. I have used Advanced Task Killer Free and SystemPanel Lite, both to no avail.
Pandora Radio, Slacker Radio, Facebook App, TiKL Touch to Talk, all come back on sporadically even after being killed.
This was an issue SOMETIMES with Eclair (2.1) but not as much as it is with Froyo (2.2 - FRF91 build).
Using stock non-rooted AT&T N1.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I get this with a few different applications. Y5 and FreeWiFi do this to me, causing my super-fast, full-bars 3G connection to deactivate and switch to a barely captured WiFi signal sometimes while walking near my house. I had to uninstall Y5 because of this, in fact: even configuring the application not to autostart and autorun didn't stop the behavior.
What apps are you talking about here? You can always put the widget on your desktop to turn auto sync off or change the individual apps' settings to manually connect to the internet. I fail to see how force closing apps is a more reliable option or what other apps will connect to the internet of their own volition. I haven't stumbled across any.
Apps being loaded into memory doesn't mean they are active.
If you have applications that don't have internet management controls built in, there is nothing you can do to stop them from using data, short of going into airplane mode. Simply don't use any applications that use the internet without your permission.
I think task killer does not work in froyo anymore because an app can't kill other apps anymore

Apps starting randomly?

Why do several apps randomly start up?
It feels like I constantly have to open task killer and kill over a dozen apps even when my phone hasn't been touched since the last time I killed almost the exact same list of apps.
Att Navigator, stocks, countdown, etc. seem to be the regular culprits. Any help with this situation would be awesome.
I've noticed the same thing on my Aria. AT&T Navigator always restarts by itself and I've never even used it. So I just set ATK to auto kill.
Look at the sync settings and you can disable things you dont need (News, stocks etc)
A "Running" app behaves differently on android. The app may be "Running" but it is also "Sleeping" which means that it may not be using any resources (battery, cpu, etc).
Using a task killer may actually be hurting your performance and battery life.

I just check the running apps on my Aria and I understand why every single one is running. AT&T Nav is NOT running. You should check all the widgets you are using, having the widget on the home screen start app automatically.
If you're rooted....
I can't tell you why it does it, but I can tell you how to stop it. If you're rooted, spend the $.89 (approx.) for Autostarts. One of the best programs I've installed.
I was having the same issue, I use AT&T Nav, but it always seemed to show up on the task list even when I hadn't started it. For whatever reason, it's set to start whenever you get a text message! With Autostarts I was able to stop it (along with many other things).
Best of luck to you!

One caveat to this, BE CAREFUL. This is a powerful program and it will let you stop just about any service/program on your phone. You could really do some damage if you don't watch it.

[Q] app manager for CM7?

I'm running CM7 and I'm happy with how it performs compared to stock rom. I see improvement in battery and memory usage. So that's good.
However, some apps like facebook, maps, tango etc still appear to become active in the background.
Is there an application which will easily let me manage rights for every app I have on the device? I dont want to freeze them, just change their permissions so they never do anything unless I intentionally start an app.
When I was on stock ROM i tried an app killer with auto kill. So i'd kill apps that were displayed. Check back a few minutes later and everything was back running again..
So to sum up..a good app manager that works nicely with CM7?
Edit: i found something called privacy blocker but I think that wont let me prevent apps from running by themselves....
Edit-2: Nevermind, its not going to work I think...reading this made me realise that some apps me be terminated at start-up, but preventing from booting at a later point is near impossible. Too bad. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=14889
Just ignore them, Android knows how to manage it's RAM effectively.
If you won´t use some apps, use TitaniumBackup (from Market) and freeze apps you are never using.

Preventing autolaunching of apps?

Hi, people...
I am running a rooted stock GB ROM with abyss kernel and would like to know how to prevent certain apps suddenly starting to run in the background. I have Android assistant installed and it is great for killing multiple apps and other stuff. But some apps like Latitude, Gmail, Samsung account, Yahoo finance seem to sneak from behind and when I check AA I see them running so I have to mark them and kill them. How can I completely keep them, or any other non-system app out of operation, unless I start them?
Many thanks....
Killing apps is NOT preventing apps from autorunning.
Task killers are bad because some apps will just rerun itself, wasting battery life.
I personally use Autostarts, it can prevent apps from running when starting up, or when triggered by an event like for example: Wifi connected, data connected, etc...
Be careful with it if you are trying to disable system apps as some things can break your phone.
Markuzy, thanks for the reply...
I know that killing apps isn't doing the job, but at the moment that is what I do when I check my phone and see the pest running around. I have Android assistant there I have been offered to stop stuff like Accuweather, Skype, Youtube and similar stuff from running at startup, but I will try Autostarts to see if that does better job and offer better and more comprehensive list of what can be NOT ALLOWED TO LIVE, as opposed to killing..
Don't worry, I'm not touching any of the system bits, just regular apps...
Use Titanium Backup(Donate version) and then freeze the offending apps.
You can always defrost them later

Device getting Slow(Moto G 2nd gen) non-rooted

I have had my Moto G2 for more than a year now. But with recent Android 6 update some things improved but phone started getting slower and lagging. I have tried factory reset but still has issues. Maybe it uses too much RAM.
Please give some suggestions.
Thank you

Did you find any solutions
Use Greenify App ........its help u..
Stock 6.0 is very buggy, flash los13
This is what I strongly recommend doing. I tried everything that could be tried without rooting, as I think unlocking the bootloader and using customized software doesn't give you the reliability of the Moto apps, and it doesn't provide an acceptable level of security. If you have an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery your passcode is useless as it can be bypassed in minutes. You don't want that.
* The #1 culprit is accessibility services. Even if one single thing is enabled in accessibility, Android is going to slow down hard. Android's accessibility settings allow apps to gain special permission, and stuff like that makes it possible for Braille back or any medical device to be able to get deeply tied into the OS. When an App starts an accessibility service, it gains special services and it becomes tangled to the OS so deeply that Android will start logging every little thing you do. That's great if you have special needs and you need something like that to use your phone, but if it's just some cool App, it's really not worth it.
Head over to settings, accessibility and make sure everything is toggled off. On top, you'll see a list of Apps. Get inside all of these sections and turn the toggles off.
* Cut down on Apps. The more you install, the worse it gets. Very simple. Strive to install Apps that are small in size and that don't use much RAM. You can see what's running in the background in developer settings (Google how to enable those) > running services. If you see any App running that shouldn't be and it's not essential, it must go. Anything you haven't used in the past 60 days must go. Whenever you find you have an App you never open, even if it's super small, just get it out of the system. Not only is it good for your phone, but it's also good for your own sanity and balance! Do some research. You'll find that the excellent suite of Google's preloaded Apps is already enough for pretty much everything. Many of the features are pretty much hidden or not advertised, but they're there. Your phone was designed to be usable from the ground - up, only install apps for things that you can't do natively i.e. chatting using WhatsApp, social media, Spotify, an RSS reader, Google Keep, nutrition tracking apps, Uber/Lyft and so on and so forth.
* See which of your Apps have web versions. Uninstall the App, and create a shortcut for the web version in Google Chrome.
* Free up storage. Strive to keep as much free storage as possible. Get a file explorer that's not ES and delete folders from apps you no longer use. Dig through WhatsApp > Databases and delete all the outdated ones. Get rid of all the unwanted, old photos, videos and voice notes left behind by messaging clients. Go through that mess your Downloads folder it and simply get rid of things you no longer need. Get rid of your screenshots too. Save the important ones in another album.
* Reboot on a regular basis. I'd say, turn your phone off and back on every 2 - 3 days.
* Use Google Photos's "Free up storage" to get rid of local copies of pics and videos that already safe and sound on your Google Photos account.
* Don't use Greenify in this day and age, especially if you're not rooted. It uses accessibility and, as you might expect by now, right, it's counter - productive. Your phone already does a good job at freezing Apps you don't use after a long period of time starting Android 6.0
* If an App keeps running in the background, consuming too much RAM and misbehaving, force close it. Get it from the App drawer, drag it to "App Info" and go "Force Close" on it. Android will get the hint and it won't let it start back again unless you so choose.
* Wipe the cache partition. It does not require root and there is a very nice guide on the instruction manual online. It doesn't delete any personal data and it works wonders.
* To wipe cache, head on over to settings > storage > internal storage > Cached data. Tap it and tap OK.
* Chrome caches a lot. Get into its app info, then storage, then clean data. Tap the first button: Chrome will delete cache from websites it deems unimportant, so you'll still have all the cache, cookies, history and login info from your favourite websites.
* If you have any App that promises to make your phone faster or free up storage or prolong the endurance of your battery such as Clean Master, DU Battery Booster, HTC Boost + etc etc get rid of that too. They're counter - productive and overall bad. I could sit there for hours giving you reasons why they are useless. The same goes to antivirus software.
* If you use Facebook, either uninstall it and use it on Google Chrome (it pushes notifications too!) or switch to Facebook Lite or Swipe. Also delete Messenger, as the web version and the external clients deal with that too. Again, if you prefer, use Messenger Lite instead. Or just don't use it on your phone at all and gain a lot of free time.
* Consider giving up on Snapchat as long as you have this phone. It's just too much. I got rid of it and I'll hop back on on my next device!
* If you use any cloud service other than Drive, buy Solid Explorer, add the cloud service and delete its proprietary App. Solid will be more than enough to run it.
* You don't have to keep Motorola and Google apps you don't need, such as Google Plus, the almost dead Hangouts or the discontinued Assist. Simply drag and drop them to "App Info", and then "Disable" them. Actually, do it. These apps are super demanding in terms of storage and stuff. As soon as you turn your phone on they don't make an impact on your storage, but as soon as they get updated the original App gets frozen and a duplicate gets installed in the user memory. That is, YOUR storage. Disabling Apps will get rid of the double copy and freeze the one that's in the system partition, storage you can't use anyway. Say: Google Play Books keeps running and it uses 200+MB, but you're a Kindle user like me and you couldn't care less about Google's own objectively inferior e-reading competing service. Simply disable Play Books and boom, your phone's a little faster and you've claimed yourself well over 200MB!
* The best security is common sense. Only install apps from the Play Store and disable unknown sources in security. Really, it has everything you need and more.
* Nova Launcher. The preinstalled launcher is great and lightweight enough, but now that it's on the way out I notice it slowing down and randomly being unreliable and not showing anything on it. Nova is graphically the exact same, except it's a lot faster and more optimized. Caveat: you'll need to open the Google App to access the Now feed.
* Delete all the data out of Play Music and set it to "Downloaded only" to prevent it from getting so huge again. It apparently doesn't always save to the SD card, and we can't do that on an 8GB phone.
* Disable the HP Printing service if you don't have an HP Printer.
