Update on Revo replacement with Razr - LG Revolution

I posted recently that VZ was sending me a Razr to try and fix my 4Ghotspot 15 minute startup issue.
Well the phone arrived complete so I could have both phones running side by side, however the Revo did not have a user account.
Here is what I saw with a sample of one:
The Razr had trouble going into setting, instead of the Revo method of making a slow move because it was a bit busy the Razr started the move and stopped at a blank screen (it is suppose to be faster?).
The icons (the indicators at the very top) are very small, very hard to see letters and numbers that are associated.
The Razr is about to receive an update, one of the fixes is the 4Ghostspot, it sort-of works but not really. I could never get it to fully work. It had trouble with more than one PC and some actions it never was able to do. It acted like it was under security control. I call VZ but they had no idea why it was iffy.
It too lost its four bottom lights, ghosting.
It does not have a network received power meter in the Network settings area, so you can only see the power of one local cell tower, to find the power you need to go to the "about phone" area, not too handy when you want to know about connection speed and the like.
Battery life about the same. I left it on overnight and it was down to 15% in the morning.
It is 1/4" thinner than the Revo, so a Maxx would still be significantly thinner too.
I did not check but the Razr screen looks better and the camera has more pixels, sound is about the same perhaps lower distortion, I did not measure the sound performance with an analyzer.
I did not like the power switch, looks weak, also the connectors are on the top with no cover.
Well, I can contact VZ and see what they will do, my guess is that I can switch back to the Revo for now, the newly released phones need to build up a bit before replacement phones are readily available. They pretty much indicated that I can get any phone that solves my problem.
Added by edit:
I also found that the SD and Sim cards are put in upside down, which is more difficult to safely handle them.

So your saying you had this issue with your Revo and they replaced it with a Razor? How did you get them to do that for you? lol

You are asking why send me a phone with a known 4Ghotshot bug, to fix a systematic 4Ghotshot issue?
The only thing I can guess is that VZ guy wanted me to use a phone he had. And he had never used the feature or read the VZ warnings about the bug.
I know this has caused another week of no Internet at my house, which makes that data plan not too handy.
It is these type of repeated issues that VZ will do a lot to help their customer, such as, giving any type of replacement phone or a non penalty termination of contract.

Why don't you just log in to the same user account as you do with your Revolution? It doesn't cause any issues. Both my phone and tablet are signed in with the same user account and I frequently use both of them at.the same time and have no problems.

Yep, that is what I was attempting to do.
The Razr would hang up and I would need to recycle power to get things working again, or on occasion the OS would give me the option to force the 4Ghotspot application to close. It really hated going to a site found by Google too.
Folks on this site talk about the Razr being a little clunky, from my experience from just this one phone I would say it had a few problems gracefully navigating around applications, perhaps that is what they mean. I can see it has the potential to exceed the Revo in many areas, assuming the larger battery phone is the one to compare to.

Update:
My intention here is to provide user comparison data, not to convince folks to what is a better phone. Written from the point of view of a Revo user switching to a Motorola Bionic.
VZ sent me a Bionic to try to find a working 4Ghotspot:
It too had a firmware upgrade waiting for it, but I did use it a bit before the upgrade.
The Bionic is very close to the same size and shape and layout as the Revo. It did power up and function much more smoothly than the Razr, much more like the Revo, here are the differences:
The display write is a bit jerky, such as when scrolling in "contacts",
It could use some launch feedback, eventually a message comes up and says the launched application had frozen and gave options to force a quit or wait.
I haven't been able to import my contacts stored on the external memory card, yes it could upload the contracts stored at VZ.
Battery life looks a bit better, it does have some sort of user adjustable battery saver mode, and the battery is 20% larger than Revo.
As to the 4Ghotspot, it has worked without error, the Revo and the Razr both had cases where data download would hangup, this would not happen every time more like once a day. Changing cell towers, or the PC had no effect on this problem. The Razr has a firmware upgrade to fix this not sure the Revo has one. Motorola seems to be doing more there.

Their Razr being released with Gingerbread and STILL not having ICS would beg to differ lol.

Motorola's latest update to the razr was completely botched. All day art work the last few days people have been coming in, and the only fix is a
Factory reset. A devastating end of life situation for the average consumer

When my Revo is stock, the 4gHotSpot works fine, with one exception. I have to force it to b/g mode or it 'will' hang like you mention. I'm not sure why the N-Mode does that, but it does. I also experimented with adding a registry key to my Windows Computer in order to force my WiFi Adapter to not allow N-Mode (Forcing b/g, or just g mode). That also helped. So, I came to the conclusion that the N-Mode is the culprit and apparently not a well known fix. The nice thing about the 4gHotSpot App on the Revo (don't know about others, but would assume the same), is that you can select the modes you want in the settings.
If you get a chance, or anyone else, for the matter, give that a try (setting to b/g mode only) and see if that fixes the issue.
-Cybie

After a couple more days it has become clear that the Revo has a much more sensitive receiver. Living in an outlying area that is a very desirable quality.
I did try the B/G mode only setting; LG Revo has this but not the Bionic, I never checked the Razr.
The audio in the Bionic is excellent, but I would rather have the receiver sensitivity.

I'll never use Verizon's hotspot. I've been rooting longer than they offered it and been using wireless tether apps longer than they been ripping customers off with hotspot. They get enough money from my house every month, they don't need more.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy i9000 freezes on standby

I have had my phone for about 2 weeks now, and this has been an issue since about day 1. I will set my phone aside while doing other things. When I want to use it I pick it up and press the power button to activate the screen. It seems that about 20% of the time the phone is non-responsive. I can't even receive calls/texts/email while it is in this state. I end up pressing the power button for 10 seconds or pulling the battery to get it to reboot. Everything seems to work fine.
I have heard that this could be a result of a reception issue, and that an update would be released in September to solve this issue. Is this information correct? Has the update already been released? I believe I am running the most current version, 2.1 update 1
Is there a software fix? Do I have a defective unit that needs to be sent in for repair? Is there a setting I need to look at? Any assistance would be appreciated.
you are describing the typical scenario of too many background services and apps running taking up too much resources thus making the phone non reponsive
install Auto Run Killer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8123924&postcount=40
then tick all the apps to disable reboot your phone
then you can choose which apps you really want to let lose for it to run in the background
It's also entirely possible it's faulty though
I don't think it is a matter of apps running because there are no active apps running when I am not using my phone.
I guess I am looking for an answer that tells me that this is an known issue with this model and I wiould be better off with a different product, or if I will be safe to get it replaced/repaired.
Ideally I would love to hear it is only a matter of a software patch or something similar.

Well that was a pretty useless post. The only idea my mind is set on is to get my hands on a dependabel phone, preferably the one I have. You suggested too many apps running, fine, but unless they run automatically on reboot and/or the 'active applications' window that runs by default is inacurate, there aren't too many resources being used and nothing running.
you'll be surprised what runs under the hood

Don't be so quick to assume your suggestion was correct either, AllGamer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775017
Thus far nothing in that thread has suggested taxing the system too far. In fact, hardly installing anything at all from a fresh factory reset still has this problem and no one yet has really worked out why aside Samsung saying the hardware is damaged. I was on the phone to them today, same thing said.
i read that before and the signal theory doesn't hold truth
if that is the case, every time i go to the toilet, or to the stairs in my office building (way deep in the building) you have Zero reception at all, yet I've never experience the freeze on black screen issue.
same goes with walmart, it's true, most walmart warehouse like buildings have extremely poor cell phone reception inside.
assuming that signal is the cause issue is true, then installing this app will prevent that

I'll highly recommend this app for anyone experiencing the issue and are under the impression the signal issue is the cause of the frozen black screen

I see no truth in the signal claim I've said why in the other thread. But this is the point, it is an issue a few of us are having from all over the place but as of yet there is absolutely no distinguishable pattern. As I say, a completely fresh phone with official firmware and no installs also has the problems. It's a very frustrating situation because no one can conclusively point to software or hardware yet. Samsung keep saying the same thing, send it in, send it in..
it's true the only way to diagnose those will require to be hands on, and run tests to pin point exactly what is causing that.
Eclair doesn't have the option to auto upgrade, so that's definitely not it
Lag is likely, but what, or which stock apps can cause so much lag?
signal even when the phone is having a hard time switching and scanning for a new signal it shouln't keep the phone unresponsive for such a long period of time unless it's lagging
my Old Treo did that, anytime it lost signal and regained signal there was a minor pause, or a looooooong pause if the phone was lagging
if this is the same case with the SGS we just need to figure out which App is running in the background that is dragging the entire system down.
it could be the internal SD which might have become defective, thus locking up the phone, similar to those people that can't get past the boot screen
i can't think of any other plausible causes at the moment.
Well, I can tell you: having experienced the problem a number of times, it is almost certainly not the lag scenario you have described - this is a proper lock-up. My guess (since it does appear to have some correlation to cell switching, or other signal-related issue) is a bug in the baseband drivers, or something similar, resulting in a panic. I might see if there's any way to get a dump out of this thing to prove it, but at the moment it's just a guess, so I'm not going to tell you that's the definitely the reason, or that you're stupid if you don't agree, even though I'm more qualified to do so, since I've actually experienced the problem.

Android is designed to not need auto task killers. It is purely a myth that they are needed whatsoever. This is linux we're talking about here, not windows.... It's possible he has a single app installed causing the issue, but the ideal fix would be to figure it out one app at a time and get rid of the faulty app.

[Q] Random Reboots

Perhaps not random, but possibly keyboard related. I believe I have experienced at least three, perhaps more reboots at various times. I just had one a minute ago when I opened my keyboard from a sleep state (dark screen). My lockscreen had what looked like a Droid X background which caught my attention, then after a couple of seconds, it rebooted.
As I mentioned, this has happened at least twice before, but always when I was trying to do something and (I believe) involving the keyboard. I've never had it reboot in the middle of anything, so the impact is negligible. Add to that how FAST the D3 reboots, it's a very minor annoyance. My old Tbolt used to do that as well, but the reboot time was probably three or four times as long, and it sometimes did it in the middle of something.
Has anyone else experienced this? If you have, sound off and perhaps we can get Moto's attention. If it's just me, then that's great news and I doubt I'll do anything about it since the impact is so minor.
It's hard not to notice since it makes the "Droid" noise when it reboots. Assuming you don't have the same sound assigned to a notification of course.
I noticed it yesterday once (and I just got the phone then too ;-; ), and it was while I was opening the camera app, I decided to open the keyboard for some reason (I don't know why), the phone locked up for a minute and then just rebooted. I also had a temporary lockup while opening up the keyboard while opening Handcent, but it regained responsiveness after about 15 seconds. For me it happens to be something to do with the keyboard while opening apps. We need more people to reproduce this problem so we can get down to the root cause :|
Got two droid 3`s in my house and haven't experience any random boots.

Happened to me while talking on the phone a few times. Got a replacement and it happened again. Never with the keyboard though. Very troubling especially with the second handset.
I have experienced reboots with the camera and camcorder apps lagging, and just general issues with those apps anyway.

I haven't had it happen since I originally posted until today. Today it rebooted in my pocket.
Perhaps it could just be a heat issue. I noticed that another thing along with my other conditions I posted was that the phone felt really hot.

The Droid 3 has a dual core 1 ghz processor processor built inside which is why it starts up so fast. Its probably having these problems because of the new android OS gingerbread 2.3.2 because of how new this operating system is. The first phone designed with the new OS for verizon wireless was the sony xperia which produced surprisingly a very good battery life with the processer designed for gaming built inside that phone.this reminds me of the first droid on Verizon the Motorola Droid A855 where there where some flukes where it would freeze up every now and then. But there were updates that eventually solved the problem. Because this is a relatively new OS there is deffinittely going to be some flukes in the software and there will be updates to solve these most likely coming soon. And especially as more and more users are buying this phone.

1. Everyone knows that it's dual-core.
2. It runs Android 2.3.4. (Hence no root yet)
3. To the OP, no reboots. Had it since the 13th.

I haven't seen another reboot since the 28th but I did have the odd experience last night of not being able to get a new wallpaper to take. In fact, I noticed that it had one of the stock wallpapers on it, the diagonal black and grey bars, but couldn't change it. Then this morning I thought about it and rebooted the phone. The last wallpaper I'd tried to change it to came up on reboot. Interesting but not alarming... unless it starts doing that frequently.
FYI I haven't noticed it running hot at any point.
Thanks for all the input everyone.
Probably seen it do it half a dozen times. IIRC it's not a full reboot, just the Android stack (i.e., same Linux kernel instance).
Have a logcat of one and don't seen anything that suggests where the problem is..just a whole bunch of "com.xxxxxx.xxxx has died" followed by normal restart log messages.
Odd that you all are experiencing this. I have not had a single reboot.

This issue is starting to cause me a good bit of frustration. Most of the time it occurs when waking the phone (sliding out keyboard seems to make it particularly likely). Also seeing complete freezes now which require battery pull.
Phone is now more than 30 days old. It was purchased online. Anyone know the odds of getting a *NEW* (not refurbished) if attempting to return it now? I'm still pretty certain this is a software issue, but may try replacing it in the chance it isn't.
I went into wifi settings and chose to forget all the connections. No more random rebooted.

I wouldn't count on that being the issue.
I've had the problem out in the field (not connected to WiFi) and have had random reboots as well.
Heres a tip for troubleshooting this issue which i 90% guarantee - factory reset your phones put zero apps on them and tweaks, use it for a week and see if u get a reboot.
Then each week after add a single tweak or app(install/uninstall/freeze), may take a yr for some of us since we can't seem to stop downloading random badly coded apps lol...

For me at least SMC, I've had random reboots from stock during the first week. I'm putting it down to bad software for now.
I usually get 1 a week, sometimes less.

Try out custom launchers for a change a pace, try uploading all your music through Google Music and just stream all your songs over 4G. If you're a heavy user I'd suggest an extended battery (are they still 50% off?), or the inductive charging solution.
But, for the most part, the Bionic will be like your X2, except with 4G lte.
I think the deal with the battery ended a while ago, but maybe you could sway them with all the troubles you're having.
I would recommend the app "Moto Home Fix" if you're going to use a home replacement. It'll allow you to jump back into Blur, or any others if you have multiple home replacements. It'll also give you the stock Android recent apps list when you long press the home key. (I believe there is a bug with Blur's recent app list, something about it not showing the correct apps.)
I would also strongly recommend manually toggling Mobile Data. I use DataSwitch, but there are many others out there (Juice Defender, Green Power, etc...)
4G is amazing, but maan does it suck juice.
LTE Switch is another good app. It'll link you right to network settings to toggle between 3G and 4G...for when you don't necessarily need a rocket in your pocket

Phone locks when receiving a call

OG Droid with Liquid Smooth 3.2 (same problem with 3.1). I haven't tried many other roms, so I don't know if this is a problem with my hardware (the phone is refurb and only 1 month old) or if I installed something that is breaking things.
The issue: If I receive a call the phone will allow me to answer (move slider) but then lock so that the call is in speaker phone mode (or at least very loud) and I cannot control anything on the screen. The power button will turn off the screen, but that's it. The other person apparently cannot always hear me, so I don't know if the mic is working at that point. If I let the call end, the phone does not recover. The only way to recover seems to be to pull the battery.
Last time this happened, the caller could hear me so I let the call end. After a minute or two, com.android.phone popped a force close message. A minute later, another app popped a force close. It did not recover even after an hour or so. Battery reset worked.
This issue is not consistent. It occurs maybe 1 out of 20 incoming calls. I had the issue on LS3.1, so I upgraded to LS3.2. Same issue. I can try another rom (CGM7.x), but I really like LS so I'd like to see if there is a resolution.
Is there a log mode I can enable to see if something consistent happens when the phone locks? I have a task killer installed. Could that be an issue? I'm not doing anything that I would have thought could be considered challenging for the phone (answering a phone call), so I'm not sure what to check.
I had this problem often on my droid 1. I ran CM7 nightlies and Prime's kernel at 1.1GHz.
Mostly it happened while I was doing other things with the phone. I think it was due to low RAM.
If you check settings - manage applications - running, how much free RAM do you have?
I usually had 40-50MB free and that wasn't enough.
Ditch whatever you can from your apps and OS to free some up.
TiBU allows you to chuck a lot of system stuff that's not really needed.
I would still be on my OG if it weren't for this problem, so I hope you find a solution that works for you.
A lot of people are on Steeldroid with the droid 1. It's still getting updates. Maybe try that.
-CM7 on DInc2
In general, this happens when the phone is just sitting there (nothing but the regular system stuff running essentially). The last time this happened where the force close messages appeared I had the web browser open. I hadn't considered ram, but that's a good possibility. I do have Advanced Task Killer running as a service, so perhaps that is related.
With ATK non running, it says I have 115MB used/64MB free. 15MB of this used memory is for settings.
With ATK running, it claims 68-79 free (it's set up to kill tasks since I was worried about memory hogs originally).
I'll look into Steeldroid. Like I said, this is a new phone. What I didn't say is that my wife got it for me to see if I would use a smart phone (was on an old lg texting phone before and this thing is physically much larger). She got it for super cheap, so if I have to go with something different, that wouldn't be the end of the world. If that were the path forward, can you recommend a couple good options with full slide out keyboards?
Thanks!
I dunno, I loved the physical keyboard on my old OG, but I left it behind when I jumped moto for HTC.
D2, D3, and D4 are supposed to be great improvements over the D1.
I see the dev for Steeldroid has a D3 version that's up to date. Maybe look for one of those?
I've always been a Motorola fan. Maybe I should have stuck with them, but I figured I'd have to get used to screen keyboards at some point...
I'd say try Steeldroid on your OG first, get a good kernel to go with it, ditch the task killer and let android handle it. See if that helps.
Good luck! B-)

So, now we have it. But we need to look at the new "issues" we're all facing. Because we're going to need some help.
The Good
We lost a lot of Blurr (thank ya Jesus!) We have a faster, better camera. A more optimized kernal for what seems like an OS with lighter thumbprint. Its fast! We can disable dozens of needlessly running apps/services. New gallery is beautiful.
The Bad
We lost the "Exit" button in the browser. Google+ is in everything with options defaulting to send anonymous usage and target ads based on our data. Auto sign-in/up is everywhere. Nova Launcher keeps getting killed by Android Battery life seems way off. Factory reset is pretty much a requirement. Clock app is super weird. Verizon bloat seems like an extra appendage that won't be amputated. Smart Actions is still broken.
The Ugly
The font is terrible. No amazing wallpapers added.
We have ALMOST a Nexus experience. What are you guys seeing with update, and what problems have you fixed? I'm super concerned that I can't "Exit" the browser. I don't like things running in memory.
I love the new update. I got it from the soak test early this week. I did not wipe first. My nova launcher has never been killed and phone is running perfectly for me since Tuesday. Love it!!!

I'm loving it. It's so fast and less bloatware. Browser can't "Exit" just like all JB roms on all devices. We also lost sleep mode on power menu. Good to see we still have mass storage usb mode. It's been removed in all Moto new lineups. This is the best ota update I've ever applied on my Android devices.
The Good & Ugly!

Just last evening I checked the System Updates on my unrooted Droid 4 and there it was! Upgraded it.
Project Butter lives upto the mark. Works smooth like butter.
Font, could've done better.
The ONLY UGLY issue am facing:
My data from the network is somehow locked, or in short, not working. Visited Vodafone gallery & they checked the settings, which were fine, but still the data is not working by the network.
NEED HELP!
Please, suggest me how I can make the data work on my Droid 4!
Please!
Currently my phone is technically paralyzed because of this issue!
Nova works fine with me too.

Vodafone is prepaid. Did you unlock the phone or buy it unlocked?

I have several friends and relatives with Droid 4's and RAZR's. These Jelly Bean updates have been hit or miss with results.
-One Droid 4 was a brand new phone with date code 03/13 and HW B. This phone received the update quickly and smoothly. Operation has been perfect.
-Another Droid 4 had date code 16/12 and HW A, never rooted or modded, update failed 3 times, left the phone soft bricked, had to be SBF'd back to ICS. The new update will just not play nice with this phone, so it will need to be replaced.
-A RAZR MAXX got this update smoothly and battery life has been great, no lags or hiccups.
-A regular RAZR got this update and battery life is horrible, the phone gets hot, wiping cache and data did not fix it. No prior issues with ICS.
I'm guessing that Motorola may have used different components in different batches and some just will not run properly.
the shift button on the physical keyboard likes to stop toggling occasionaly. rebooting the phone fixes it for a while.
when it stops toggling, you have to push [shift] and [1] to make a "!", instead of [shift] and then [1].
No tether apps seem to be working

The stock one works fine for me. I had to use SQL Lite to enable Wifi, but it seems to work, no problem.
Cheers,
Steve.

yes i noticed this too. it's a little annoying but i think there should be an update to the update coming out soon. right now id like to figure out how i can reflash with jb possibly using rsdlite as i did with ics but someone said flashing to ics now would brick my d4. im getting random reboots like once a day, but i think it may have something to do with my attempt at installing lbe which sent the phone into bootloop. so i want to clear it all and start from the top.. but how?

I heard others say the same thing. I've not noticed that yet.....yet

I also have the SHIFT issue. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I also have an issue with SMS. When I am sending a message the green arrow continually shows even though the message has already sent.

Matter of fact, I had the phone root'ed, stock tether enabled on ICS. Unrooted the phone to get the update to install and once upgraded to JB, my tether was still working, so the upgrade did not reset the value in the SQL database.
Works brill anyhow.

That is the most annoying bug there is for the JBupdate. Hope someone or MOT can fix this soon.

Weird - I'm pretty certain it had reset for me during the upgrade.
My D4 had the stock rom + the Google Now hacked into it, plus the latest version of Hashcode's CM10, which I'd been using steadily since the Bluetooth bugs were fixed. (Around two weeks ago.) On the stock ROM, I'd always had issues of the phone occasionally (often) going crazy with background processes or something where it would heat up quite a bit and the battery would drain quickly. I also had intermittent Bluetooth issues with my car connection, where it often wouldn't connect, requiring a reboot or toggling BT, and it would sometimes lose the connection after a call.
Running CM, it stayed cool and had much longer battery life, and BT worked much more reliably.
Removing the Google Now hack to install the JB update wasn't going smoothly, so I ended up just using RSDLite and wiping the phone completely then installing the JB update manually (it wasn't showing yet as an OTA.) It's definitely faster, BUT...
The Shift key often doesn't work correctly, as has been mentioned here
Bluetooth is wonky again and I have to tell it over and over to pair with my car
Mobile data just stopped working yesterday, even after rebooting, until I manually turned off and on mobile data
Battery life is atrocious; it has been getting hot a lot and I'm probably getting not much more than half the battery life that I got in CM. Looking in the Battery info, Screen is usually the biggest battery user, but I always have it either set to Auto or to a very dim display. Looking at CPU usage shows nothing obvious. It's common for the battery to get to 95-100' F or higher. Right now it's behaving and only at 72' F - it must know that I'm complaining about it.
I'm hoping that we'll soon see (if we haven't already; I haven't checked yet) a CM based on the new kernel, so we get everything working but with the better battery life and such. Video was the only issue that I was still seeing with it.

Have you checked, that you APN still is entered in the phone ? Upgrade from ICS to JB removed my manual APN entry. I just re-entered it and all working.

I wonder why they axed sleep mode, I used that a lot. Does CM or AOKP still have it?

I've noticed that I'm seeing 3G/H notification in the notification bar while connected on WiFi. It didn't do this in ICS. I wonder whether that's just a cosmetic change or whether it has an impact on battery life. I've not noticed the shift problem, but the Caps Lock light doesn't seem to work any more.
Cheers,
Steve
