I have been all over this place with my bionic. I have tried 901 and went back to 893 using saver and other methods. The tools seem to do the job. My problem is trying to install an update from verizon. It will download and get to the end of the install, but then I get stuck in a failed fastboot with cdt errors. I am able to fix that using the Fixcdt, but every time my phone reboots I have to force it out of fastboot and into normal startup.. I have searched high and low and have found little bits of info out there, but nothing that has nailed it. Does anybody have the answer that I am looking for?
Thanks for they help!
You won't be able to install it. Since you have the .901 cdt.bin on your phone, you will need that file with anything you load until you have the "soon to be official" .902.
To install the official Big Red OS (which is no different than the ones floating on here) you will need to be on 5.5.886. You will need to download it to your phone, then move that to your PC, unzip, replace the cdt.bin file with the .901 file, then Fastboot it with RSD Lite it. Then you will have the .893.
Or you can download the .902 file and flash it in recovery OR you can wait a few days until it is OFFICIALLY pushed to your phone.
I believe this to be correct, but there are more knowledgeable people on the forum that may give you an answer you prefer.

So, as this is my first post on XDA I'd like to first state that I am somewhat new to the rooting scene. I used to have a DX and rooted it with no major problems. I know this is probably best suited to be posted in the Developement section, but I currently dont have premissions to do so. I would like to make sure I have everything I need and a clear understanding of the process before I attempt to root my D3.
As a precaution I would like to comfirm that their is a current .SBF file that can be used to return the phone to stock should I do something stupid during the root process? I have found the following link on this site with a .SBF file but from reading the threads I cant determine if this will return the D3 to stock:
[Recovery] RSD v5.5.0 and 5.5.184 (aka 5.6.890) fastboot partitions/flashable zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255198
Can someone confirm/verify if this will return my D3 to stock should I need to?
Also within this thread their is mention of Moto-Fastboot and something abbreviated as abd (i think). I am not familiar with either of these. Could someone also provide a breif explanation of what these are and their importance to the .SBF process?
I am also planing on using the following otpion to root my D3:
[Guide] one-click root for Droid 3 (and others) [UPDATED 9/8/2011]: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1240130
I want to say that I read somewhere that I have to download the SU.apk from the market place? Is this correct or does this option one-click process display the SU icon in the app draw as the z4root one click option did on my DX?
Also I know that I need to purchase/download the D3 boot loader file from the market plac, I think? Is there anything else that you would recommend that I download/purchase to ensure I dont brick my phone in the process?
Sorry this is so long, but thank you in advance to those that provide responses/suggestions/comments to my questions.
Yes, there is a fully functioning sbf available for the D3
Yes, that is the sbf that is needed. To actually use the sbf you will need rsd lite, which i also believe to be in that post with the sbf.
This sbf will indeed return your phone to fully functioning stock in the case that it should be needed. (i've had to do it my fair share of times)
ADB is a command prompt interface that allows you to interact with the files on your phone without having to go into something like root explorer.
Fastboot (power + vol up + vol down) is a pre boot menu that allows you to boot into different things (like the AP fastboot mode needed to flash an SBF or to go into recovery). To flash an sbf you need to connect your D3 to the computer (in computer mode, i think), and choose the xml file that is in the SBF after you've extracted it.
The one-click root allows you to root your phone hassle free
When i say this, I mean that it installs the Superuser.apk and pushed the busybox and su to the system/xbin, which is needed for some different processes that require root.
here is the link to the most updated version of the bootstrapper, which allows recovery to be entered through the power-off (by using the bp tools option in fastboot)

smoshim, thank you very much for your assistance and explanations. I already have RSD Lite on my computer and actually meant to include that in my original post. I had it on hand for when I rooted my DX just incase. I did need to use it once but it wouldnt recognize that my DX was connected for some reason. So I had to use a disck based linux program to SBF my DX when I sold it. Hopefully, RSD Lite doesnt give me any issues should I need it for my D3. Well, It's almost 2 am here in Omaha and I need to get my sorry tail to bed. Gotta be up in 5 and a half hours to get my 3 boys out the door for school. I have been patiently waiting to root my DS as I wanted to be sure that all of the "kinks" have been worked out and also wanted to try out some custom roms. I loved the darkslide rom for the DX. In your opinion do you think I should also go ahead and download/install rom manager?
honestly, rom manager doesn't have much available for the d3 yet. it'll be more productive right now to just manually drop the ROMs into your sd and boot into recovery.
And, in my opinion, the roms that we have out now are awesome. And as people get impatient they're making more and more themselves. So even though there may not be too many to choose from compared to some other devices there are more and more coming into the works all the time. But it sounds like you know what's going on, and the sbf process is pretty painless if you're already familiar with rsd on your DX
So in my attempts to undo unbrick my bionic i was able to get back on the path and got into a rooted 901 version YEAH.
Problem is my webtop version is WT 1.3.0-105_DBN-1 which is not the current version. Does anyone have a way to get an updated grfs version onto the phone or a process that works coming from 901?
The problem as I see it, is that you aren't really on 5.9.901 because you couldnt have updated with the leaked update.zip without having all of the signed components from 5.5.893 including the webtop partition. You must be using a ROM that updated only your system and nothing else.
The solution is to use the full 5.5.893 xml.zip released recently and flash it with RSD Lite and it will put you back on the path with all the stock images.
If you wanted to only flash the grfs.img from that file then you need to use the moto-fastboot.exe instead of the fastboot.exe because it is modified to handle larger than 256MB images.
It is difficult to tell where you really are with all of your firmware components and whether just flashing the webtop will do you any good. That is why i recommend the full xml.zip and RSD Lite.
This is the method that a technician would use to fix a returned device to stock and is what the file is designed to do. Its like an SBF file but uses the fastboot interface instead of the old flash interface.
We have all the tools we need to recover virtually all problem flashes at this point, and its up to everyone who is modding these devices to understand the options before you flash any ROMs so you dont find yourself returning a device that you destroyed to VZW for warranty replacement, a practice all to common unfortunately.
Ok I have no idea why or what I did but I can't add a new contact, my contact storage force closes. I have not deleted any of my files that I know of and all bloat is unfrozen. Everything else works calls and changing exisitng contacts I just can't add any new contacts. So I am on .901 with 4everroot and want to reinstall the full system to see if I can fix my contacts. Since the pathsaver came out I am unsure what to use. I guess I want to go back to the full 893 then 4everroot again. Do I need to FXB to 893 then apply the forever root and update to 901. If so can you guys attach links to what I need much appreciated.
I think you could FXZ back to stock... But I am unsure.
Pathsaver should work though.
How to use pathsaver http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufnDSFi4glo
I don't think you can use pathsaver from 901 but my other question? does the pathsaver give you the whole file like FXZ does. I need to find out what I did to screw up creating new contacts so I figure a whole new system download will fix it. I am downloading the 856 FXZ now and going to rsd it back to stock forever root and then take the 893 update then push the 901. Does this make sense or am I complicating things.
I used the path saver to go back down and up again. Make sure you have the .886 radio file on your SD card, you'll need it. Also, you'll need the cdt.bin file (.901fix) at the bottom of the path saver link.
Have you just tried to reflash the .901? Oh, it probably won't work since it verifies the .893 system.
Thanks for the responses I figured it out and got back to 901 rooted but wasted 4 hours getting my phone set up again. But I can add contacts now so all is good. I FXZ to 893 and just put the cdt.bin from 901 in the 893 file and rezipped it Rsd lite had no problem loading it and then I manually forever rooted and downloaded the 901 file and manually installed it and kept root. Damn I wish they would unlock the friggin bootloader so we don't have to waste so much time and jump through all these hoops.
Hello all, I'm not new to rooting and flashing roms but am new to the Droid Bionic. I've been doing hours of research and haven't been able to find a solution to my problem yet although it is probably here somewhere. I have a Droid Bionic and have been on Gingerbread for some time. Im not sure of the official update im on but I decided Id like to try an ics leak. The one i tried had two files: one was called SpearmintGum_targa-Release-1.2, and the other was called speargapps-ics-20120304-signed. Now i had a friend help me out and we did it together but we both failed to read the instructions saying not to reboot before installation of the 2nd package. So now i have my Droid Bionic stuck in a bootloop and nothing ive tried works. Ive tried RSD Lite to go back to stock .902 and it didnt work. I tried rebooting into stock recovery and i just dont know what to do! If there is already an answer to my question Id really appreciate to be pointed in the right direction to the thread. If anyone knows what i can do to fix id really appreciate it. Thanks in advance
Need to find out what version you're on. Settings, scroll to bottom, about phone, and get it. Also, if you're not on a later build, no reason to fxz to 902 when 905 is out. Also need RSD 5.7 and latest moto drivers. Let me know when you get all that. I'll walk you through it.

he said he gets boot loops, i'm guessing he can't get into settings, about, etc
Did you use as or BS to install? You should be able to pull battery if on BS, wipe all and restore nandroids. Otherwise post above has a valid point.

Try this:
First download an ics leak for bionic. Then RSD to .905 gingerbread. Put the ics leak on your phone and boot into stock recovery. Install the leak from there and see if your phone boots up. Wait at least 10 minutes before seeing if it failed or not.
For the record you were trying to flash a ics rom not a ics leak
All ics leaks just require to flash 1 file in stock recovery
You can try to use this script to fxz back to 905 and then try a ics leak
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-bionic-hacks/214902-downgrade-902-no-app-data-loss.html
AND MAKE SURE YOU READ THE OP AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING
good luck
If your still having issues, I can help. PM me.
I got a bionic that had an update to ics done, however they totally screwed it up and now the phone won't get past the boot screen before shutting down and repeating. Sometimes It'll go the setup screen, but each time it crashes again.
I hit the down key and power button to get into that master menu and tried all the options there but still nothing. I was reading that I actually need gingerbread downloaded to an sd card then go into the master menu and open it from there.
The problem is I can't seem to locate the files I need to do this. Can you guys please help me? I'd hate to have to sell this on ebay, since it's only worth about 15 bucks there. It's otherwise in mint condition.
Thanks.
.If you try to load gingerbread, your phone will be bricked permanently. You can only load current i.e. ics(no leaked versions)or jb. You can not downgrade. Look for FXZ file for either one and load it with rsdlite.
