Linux (Ubuntu) on Android phones - LG Thrill 4G

Has anybody attempted installing any actual Linux OS on an android handset? Was reading about it in the Ubuntu forums and saw it was possible.
So next week I am going to install Ubuntu onto my old Hauwie Ascend, which is currently running CM7. If anybody has done this before, I'd appreciate any tips or pointers. Peace!

Jolicloud... we all love jolicloud...

- does Android count?
well i will say ubuntu but i didn't try any other linux distro yet (my desktop doesn't let me start the computer with linux so i can only install linux on my laptop )
Would have been Ubuntu... But now after seeing this I'm tempted by DSL and Jolicloud

Android

OpenSuse
Ubuntu, Android, ChromeOS, not necessarily in that order.
Ubuntu and Android. Those are the only 2 I've used.
Have to go with Ubuntu - It is almost brainless to install and maintain.
I used to use Fedora for a few years, but switched to Ubuntu for its more stable releases. I also am alpha testing Haiku at the moment. My little sister uses Jolicloud.
I just wish I could get the rest of the family to use Linux over Windows.
EDIT: I almost forgot that I'm running Rhobuntu on occasion when I need my Linux fix and am not near a PC.
Archlinux is best I've ever seem for personal use.

I don't think Android realy is a Linux distro, it's Linux based, but heavily modified, even Google said it's not Linux (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm a big Slackware guy. Been using it since the mid 90s.
Another Android & Ubuntu vote.
Seriously I want to vote for opensolaris but there are no upfront development on the desktop side, so I'd give fedora as my next best option.

[Q] So I want to port a rom......

What is porting a rom? I think it is just taking a rom from different phone and making it work on another device....is that right?
If that is right I want to port a rom or roms from the Nexus One to the HTC Hero CDMA.
But can anyone list what tools and knowledge I will need? I'm running windows 7. So any programs or books I need to read can someone give links to information about the book, or links to download/buy the program that I'll need to get started on porting roms to our HTC Hero CDMA.
Also can someone tell me the pros and cons of porting roms as well?
Thanks, I can't wait to get started on this
Try using the ultimate theme injector is what I've been using

If you really want to get into it I suggest running a Linux distro. I run ubuntu 10.04. Haven't had windows on my computer since August of last year. Took a little while to get use to, but I now like it better. Also gives you the ability to get repos, compile Android and kernels, and much more.
Depending on what you are porting it might require new drivers, xml edits and resizing, the theme injector will only do so much. I think it will only replace and resize images.

thanks for helping btw
Have you built any roms yet? I'd suggest getting a kitchen and playing around with a known good rom - get used to what's there, what you can change, things like that. I've been playing around with dsixda's HTC Android Kitchen (on WinXP using Cygwin) lately with a few ROMs (my stock rom, liquid sense, aosp, and CM6). That's the best way to learn IMO.

OOOOOOOOOH!!!!!11
that sounds like that might actually work....once i get a kitchen set up on linux mint. play around with a few different roms and see what i'm able to change, find out what it is that i'm changing and what changing it does.....AAAAHHH YOU'RE A GENIUS!
That sounds like that will work for learning to begin to develope beginner roms, and improve roms.
But now that you've got me set for like the first few months of learning. I don't want to post another thread about porting roms, so anyone know any information on porting roms? I know the user above said use a theme injector but that is for resizing and editing the images of the rom im porting. There has to be more to porting a rom than just resizing images. I'm trying to get all my information ahead of time so that i can just jump into developing with little to no questions for our device
kifno, that kitchen also has "experimental" porting tools in the Advanced Menu. I meant to say that in my original post.

Hi,
I am still running 2.3.6 because of I am enjoying webtop 2.0, however, I though upgrade to ICS is a must very soon, and I am looking for a "real" webtop.
webtop2sd cannot run on Droid 4, ubuntu using VNC... is there any options for Droid 4? I want a native ubuntu or other linux like webtop on my Droid 4.
I have google already but found it seem impossible? If anyone have any hints, please let me know.
Million thanks!
Kent

What's wrong with the tablet mode in ICS - seems to work fine for me. Some apps even display differently when in that mode.
Cheers,
Steve.

[Q] Difference between Linux and Windows version?

Hey there,
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I was wondering why so many people use linux to build android apps. Shouldn't Android Studio be the same for both the operative systems? I've got a pretty decent computer, so I don't think I could see any speed difference. Currently I have both OS installed on my hard disk.
bad thinking
Its really bad thinking

What do you mean?
There is no big difference in developing android apps on Linux or win or mac . Linux is preferred because its free and android ROM and kernel development is easy on Linux compared to Mac and windows. Otherwise app development is same on all three OS .
